"I'll happily send it to rot in jail, or likely dance to the hangmans tune. But not at the cost of any of our lives. That halberd could have taken any of our heads. Were we on the streets of Cauldron itself, I'd not argue the toss with your Kikinnin. But here, in this goblin den, two people, one descended from the demons that our ancestors fled, and the other summoning such creature to this world. I'll not slay them out of hand, but I'd not go easy on them in the hope they turn out friends. What was that blue duke you were talking of earlier?"
Kikinnin snorts, then speaks. "Drengens dramatiske, bror. Det skal nok give os problemer en af disse dage, ham løbe ind retfærdige kampe, der kun eksisterer i hans hoved. Han tror jeg forsøger at blive venner med dem. Jeg tror, han kan være en af de langsomme dem."
"The boy's dramatic, brother. That's gonna give us trouble one of these days, him running into righteous battles that only exist in his head. He thinks I'm trying to make friends with them. I think he might be one of those slow ones."
"What was that blue duke you were talking of earlier?"
"When we were hunting the slavers in Malachite, Maxim found paperwork that mentioned a bunch of folk, including Xoden Nightshield in Cauldron, working with Grehlia Carnis, under orders from the Blue Duke. I also heard talk of half-orc mercs working for the Duke, as well. And now, we hear the name again. That's why we need their throats to stay braced, so they can pass air across their cords, and inform us better."
Kikinnin kneels down over the tiefling woman, to get a closer look. He brings a gloved hand to Kallev's lips, pulling them back to examine the teeth. Then he pulls an eyelid back, checking on the color and shape of the eyes. Turning the head to the side, he moves any hair out of the way, and looks over the ear, as well. He pokes the horns last. "Well, I see what you mean about the nature of the creature. Less human than human. I'm sure the Guard will want her back, for their peace of mind." The black-beard produces a pair of manacles, as well as Ghelve's masterwork lock, and secures the tiefling, before either he or Marigold stops the woman from dying.

Maxim nods in agreement at Marigold's point;
"Aye Lil' Miss... reckon we should broker some deals should we keep coming back for wands and such... One for when we head back up top..."
At Kikinnin's words he flashes a wry smile, clapping the armoured dwur on the shoulder;
"Han er ung bror, ren og enkel. Han er en Surabar - alle fulde af pis og eddike ... for du huske, hvad det var som at være en bakkenbart ungdom! Sandt han taler uden at tænke tingene igennem ... men du kan være lige så hensynsløs! Hell tænder vi kalder kan ... redde den lille dame selvfølgeli."
He's young brother, pure and simple. He's a Surabar - all full of piss and vinegar... sure you remember what it was like being a whisker youth! True he talks without thinking things through... but you can be just as reckless! Hell's teeth we call can... save the little lady of course.
The gun-mage pauses a second looking at their prisoners with hard eyes;
"Vi spiller rart med disse infernalske bønder, indtil vi tømme dem af værdi. Så vores unge korsfarer kan sætte dem til sværdet for alle jeg ligeglad!"
We'll play nice with these infernal pawns until we empty them of value. Then our young crusader can put them to the sword for all I care!

Kikinnin rubs the back of his neck, looking more comfortably in Maxim's direction. "I agree, on several of your points, except a couple. I'll let you guess which ones."
He waits for the two prisoners to wake so they can ply them for information about 'their' lair.

Ryan sputters as the last of the potion courses down his throat, bringing him back to the land of the living, looking around at the others he settles on Kikinnin. "Tactical misstep I take it."
Coppery hints tinged his saliva still, as he reaches into the scroll case retrieving 1 of the scrolls contained within. The spidery lines written across if flare and fade from view as he reads them aloud.

"Ah! much better."
Listening to the exchange back and forth and not really understanding all of it, Ryan waits for Kikkinin to secure the mage and Tiefling, "Do you need them revived somewhat? I can channel which would help all of us as well as revive them as well. Make sure you gag him."

Chorlyndyr starts coughing when he receives the first channel. Kallev remains unconscious instead.
The man slowly recovers consciousness and looks around and down at his manacles "So you are the police here or what? Free me rats or I will pursuit you in your nightmares"
His attitude is clearly not collaborative at all and will require magic or strong and convincing words able to shift his attitude to helpful in order to make him talk.

"I'm not sure why you waste your powers on him. At this stage, I think we should just haul him up to the guard in Cauldron and take his murderous companion with him. Might even be a reward still out for them.."
Muses JJ out loud.
He ensures both are very firmly bound.
"The goblins can wait, we need to at least get these two back to the authorities. It'll only take a few minutes."
Unless anyone objects he starts pushing the wizard in the direction of the way back.
"And if you give me any trouble I'll drop you down the cliff, rather than taking the stairs."

Maxim raises an eyebrow at the prospect of the two being worth a bounty;
"Potential coin value o' these two miscreants should be a consideration..."
The dwur halts JJ's enthusiastic impression of a justicar;
"Hang fire there Surabar. Just because this devil-humper ain't waggling his tongue; don't mean we give up..."
The gun-mage smirks at the bound wizard, loading his pistol once again.
... Leastways until we exhaust our own methods..."
Maxim presses the barrel of his pistol to their captives temple;
"This here is a Hackbus original... Will likely blow a hole the size o' my fist through that oh-so-smart head o' yours.. Probably won't kill ye, but it'll leave a smart man like you mighty dumb... Chorlyndyr looks at Hackbus visibly scared. He talks, but he does so with a judgemental and hard expression "We are here to oversee the Blue Duke's interests in Drakthar's Way."
You do notice Chorlyndyr is being evasive and not collaborative in his answers. His answers driven by needed friendliness rather than a natural desire to be helpful.

"Tactical misstep, I take it."
Kikinnin nods. "You could call it that, aye. We need you some better armor."
"So you are the police here or what? Free me rats or I will pursuit you in your nightmares."
Kikinnin frowns, not expecting the first words back to be belligerent ones, considering the man's predicament. When Maxim's Hackbus comes 'round, his frown loosens as the words begin to flow.
"That's better. You can't go threatening us when your life hangs in the balance. Now, I know you're not so willing to discuss things with us raiders of your lair, but you must know that this isn't a chance encounter here. The Guard's already aware of the entry point above, and has stationed with support, so will continue to press into this dwarven old hold until they're sure it's safe. So our death is not the end of this, even if you were able to pull that off." Kikinnin looks at Ryan, and purses his lips.
"Alright now. If you'll oblige us a couple more questions, we'll see you safely back, your life and all. Is Drakthar the Rat King? How many rats and gobs are about? Who is this Blue Duke, and how much do you know about his plans on Cauldron? We know he's worked with Xoden Nightshield, and has insisted Xoden continues to support Grehlia Carnis with his business. We already broke up part of a slaver's ring in Malachite, and we're fixing on ending the group of half-orcs supporting the Blue Duke. Possibly the Blue Duke himself, seeing as his fingers are dipping into every butter cup. What say you, Chorlyndyr the Redeemable?"

Chorlyndyr looks a last time at Hackbus then turns his attention to Kikinnin as he speaks, his expression visibly more relaxed "Kikinnin, isn't it? It is a pleasure being able to talk with a civilised one" he makes an attempt of a smile.
"The Rat King?" he produces a soft laugh as the first question arrives "You can call him like that if you wish. The Rat King, the Wolf King, the Goblin King... I am sure he is pleased to be known like that. I would call him just a Chief. The image he has of himself will be his doom" he looks at Kallev and his own manacles "Of our own doom if you allow me to say" he stares at Kikinnin and draws a smile in his face.
He shows surprise when you pronounce the name of Xoden, averting his eyes "Now... that's interesting... it seems you have been looking to contact us for a time..." he licks his libs then continues "Xoden, Kallev and myself, we are part of a group of adventuring mercenaries who work for the Blue Duke"
"The Blue Duke, he is a powerful ogre mage" he smiles like savouring your surprise "He keeps a private army of half-orc soldiers, and is currently in negotiations with one of the nobles in Cauldron. This noble wants to augment his..." he pauses "...or her..." he draws a smile "...personal bodyguards with stronger mercenaries, but doesn't want to do so publicly."
"That brings us back to why are we here. The Blue Duke has been smuggling these mercenaries into town using the goblin tunnels, and stationed me and my companions here to set things up and keep the flow going." he looks at Kallev fallen "But I guess the increasing demands and reckless character of Drakthar has ended up calling too much unwanted attention"
"You seem able adventurers, but the Blue Duke is a powerful one, not to be played with, and I believe he has even more powerful allies" he looks at your weapons "You better have him as an ally than as an enemy" you can feel the alluring charisma of Chorlyndyr as he talks, his soft voice and pleasant face.
Kikinnin Rouradont |
"You're growing more questions with your answers, Chorlyndyr. What's the name of your adventuring group? The one you, Xoden, and Kallev are, uh, were, a part of? You looking for something in return for telling us which noble happens to be fortifying? As for ally, I'm pretty sure we'd be against that, seeing as the Blue Duke's been nothing but a menace to the well-being of people of Cauldron. How he managed to corrupt two dwarves already is beyond my ken. Sounds like Xoden knew what he was doing, but how'd you overcome Orek?"
Kikinnin realizes he's talking more than the others, so he lets his last question float about, looking for an answer, before he raises further questions about the rest of the denizens in Drakthar's Way.

"The Blue Duke mercenaries? No, we have not a name as a group" he smiles at the dwarf "You are a witty one maese Kikinnin. We can help each other here rather than savaging us" he tenses his manacles "I cannot tell you the name of the noble as that information has not been disclosed to any of us. But..." he makes a pause releasing the tension in the manacles "We overheard our boss speaking with a soft-spoken woman some weeks ago, and learned that the woman is a member of a secret society of cabalists and demon cultists based somewhere in the region."
When Kikinnin talks about dwarven corruption he adds "Look, things are changing in Cauldron." he stares at Kikinnin, then at each member of the group "Which brings us to why I am sharing this information with you." he draws an ample smile as he talks now, standing up as tall as he can "As you can see things are already in movement, very powerful forces you cannot fight with. But now... today you have a great opportunity to help yourselves and Cauldron. You are an able group, join us now and you will have an outstanding position in the new Cauldron that is to come"

The dwur adds in his 2 coppers worth;
"Huh. Reckon there's a hellish lot o' political mummery an' power playing going on behind the veils o' this city and deep in its bowels.."
At the offer of turning coat, Maxim flashes his customary hard grin;

GM Rutseg |
If he is affected by Maxim's dismissal of the offer, he does not show.
Instead, Chorlyndyr nods to Kikinnin as he talks "Are you not tired of rule by blood Kikinnin? The nobles and the rich perpetuate their power by giving us the hope of reaching the spot, but how do we reach there if we do not play in equality. They have all the opportunities open for themselves and perpetuate their system by use of favor and power" he stares deep into Kikinnin's eyes "Should this city not be ruled by those with the best capacity and merits instead?"
He turns to JJ as he speaks "Drakthar... I would not say he is a goblin... he is more of a bugbear" he chuckles at this point "I have had to negotiate with him constantly so I know him good. He has become reckless and uncontrollable as of lately. The foolish one thinks that by sending his goblin eyes to the town into vandalism he will force the cabalists to invite him into their inner circle." the man negates with his head "It is not enough for him to have a relevant position into the New Order, he has become impatient and insists on meeting directly with a member of this group and be recognized as an equal. Fool"
At JJ's witty question the man smiles amused and full of mystery "Of course I know where they go. Just there are better ways to conceal a half-orc army than delivering it personally to the interested one." he fixes his white hair before finishing "And well, as I said, we were in a planning stage"
"Drakthar has not understood the opportunity to be part of something big. He thinks high of himself and does not see the broad picture" he stares at you "But you are different, you can see the need for a change, the opportunity to be part of something bigger and better. The opportunity to make history"
_JJ Surabar |
"I" says JJ sternly.
"See a man who traffics with demons, consorts with murderer's, works with goblins and is busy sneaking an army of Orcs into MY HOME TOWN"
He takes out an old hankie and stuffs it into the mans mouth.
"And someone who is very skilled in using words to get what he wants."
JJ turns to the others. "We need to get these two to the surface. They know a lot more than they will tell us, and if we are going to face Drakthar, then we can't do it with them at our backs."
He draws a sword and gently prods the wizard along the route back to the bathhouse.
"I also note you avoided answering the question about Orak. I'll be putting it to you again as we got through the temple of Torag. How has he been taken into your schemes?"

"He's evasive, that's all. He's full of himself too.
"At least I have an idea why my office was ransacked recently.
"And anyway, should we keep the tiefling here alive for a reward?"
Juraan will make himself comfy in the room while waiting for Ryan to do his thing.
"Nice furniture."
Marigold Montajay |
"Uh, JJ? I d-d-don't think he c-c-can answer you very w-w-well w-w-with that hankie in his m-m-mouth," Marigold timidly points out. She'd been attentive to the dialogue, both the prisoner's and her friend's conversation in Dwarven, but had opted to keep quiet for the moment.
"He's n-n-not even that s-s-scared of us," she continues, switching to Dwarven herself. "He thinks these p-p-people are going to w-w-win at w-w-whatever they're p-p-plotting...and he likes t-t-to t-t-talk, like J-J-Juraan said."
_JJ Surabar |
JJ nods.
"That is so he can think about what he is going to tell us at the temple to Torag. Come on." he prods the captive. "Can one of you sling the demon over your shoulder?"
Maxim Snaphånce |
At JJ's hankie stuffing, Maxim stifles a smile;
"I'd say that brings negotiations to an end!"
The dwur claps his hands on their prisoners shoulders;
"Truth be told his honeyed words were wearing a might thin... By my reckoning this one do'n want to be redeemed... merely to recruit!"
The gun-mage then muses on Chorlyndyr's details on Drakthar;
"Feh. Drakthar a bugbear? So guess we have to deal with another buchveer... this time a aspiring chief. Will be a tough scrap... but we downed tougher in the Malachite eh folks?"
Marigold Montajay |
"I s-s-still w-w-want to know how the k-k-kidnappings were p-p-playing into this," Marigold mutters, her expression darkening. "B-b-because if it were a b-b-big p-p-part of their p-p-plans then they'll likely t-t-try it again s-s-somewhere else in th-th-the area."
Kikinnin Rouradont |
Kikinnin listens as best he can to the bits of information that should help, and the ones that only seek to turn their eyes away from the real problem. One that JJ rightly points out. Then JJ stuffs the man's mouth with a snot-rag, deterring further answers. Young and whiskerless.
"He thinks he's justified, doing what he's doing. He's touched in the head, for thinking what he does. We know that Orak was influenced strongly, to the point that he was willing to fight for something not his cause. Marigold, what kinds of magics can charm folk into being puppets for another? You seem to know a bit about the Artes."
Kikinnin thinks about turning to Chorlyndyr to ask him the same question, but decides against it. More words, most of them sick of sweet nothings.
"How many orcs you got, Chorlyndyr? And where are they? There's food here to feed an army."

Kikinnin Rouradont |
Round 2
AC = 22
HP = 34/34
Weapon Equipped = MW Dwarven Greataxe
Condition(s) = Blessed
Before Kikinnin has time to coat his blade, and prepare himself for the vampire-bugbear, he watches in frustration as JJ is injured by the still-dangerous Chorlyndyr. Without a second thought, the black-beard flicks the dagger into the mage.
Silver Dagger, Bless, Smite: 1d20 + 5 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 5 + 1 + 2 = 18 for 1d4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 2 + 1 = 4 damage
"Couldn't keep still, could you. That's the last thing you're like to do."
_JJ Surabar |
Not moving on the map yet, as JJ can either move up to the vampire or the mage. If the mage is still up, he'll do that to free up Kikinnin for the vampire, otherwise he'll step up to the vampire.
If the attacks are against the mage, add +2 to hit and +2 to damage
JJ staggers at the force of the magical missiles. Then, with a determined glint in his eye he steps up to the enemy and uses what he has started to think of as his "dark style" to attack the dangerous opponent with his silvered weapons.
short sword, TWF, bless: 1d20 + 7 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 7 - 2 + 1 = 11

Juraan |
Round 1
Juraan tries firing an acid ray at the new (deranged) foe:
acid ray: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21 damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
(bless, ranged touch, point-blank shot)
Round 2
And lacking any other options, does the same thing again:
acid ray: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
(yuck!)

Round 1
Kn. Religion: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Marigold felt oddly confused, though she knew she should be terrified. Weren't vampires supposed to have super strength, capable of tearing a man limb from limb with ease? Not to mention all the tales and stories she'd heard featured human vampires rather than bugbears.
She draws her silvered mace and steps forward, but not to enter the combat - not yet anyway. Instead, she places a protective hand on Ryan as he fights.
You won't hurt my friend!
Marigold moves behind Ryan and casts Protection from Evil on him.
Round 2
The halfling cries out with anger and dismay as Chorlyndyr breaks free of their group and joins the fight against them. As his magic leaves JJ freshly bleeding, she feels a familiar anger once more.
No fire! Channel it to your magic...
She glares at the man and emits a strange, high-pitched shriek in an attempt to strike fear into his heart.
"Rrrrreeeeeee!"
Casting Cause Fear on Chorlyndyr; DC 14 Will save.
Maxim Snaphånce |
Round 2? 3? - Buffs: Mage Armour (+4AC) & Bless (+1 attacks, +1 saves vs fears)
Drakathar continues to thwart Maxim's attempts to damage him - resulting in the dwur spitting in anger then once again drawing a bead;
Silver this time ye basterd...
The gun-mage charges the weapon within with arcane energy (Arcane Strike - Swift Action) for good measure and pulls the trigger (Standard Action)
Ranged Touch: Pistol+Bless: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 4 + 1 = 21

Marigold touches Ryan casting a defensive spell against the evil creatures.
The manacled Chorlyndyr is not able to move as evasively as usual and Kikinnin's axe cuts him. Still he is tough and holds, barely standing.
That is until JJ approaches, he makes his sword into the sorcerer's belly, cutting very close to this heart. The man nearly dies instantly and drops to the floor bleeding profusely.
The melee entanglement and cover forces Juraan's aim, his magical rays landing close to the new creature but hitting the wall nevertheless.
Marigold thoughts about casting a cause fear spell, but ultimately notices the creature is fallen and rethinks.
Maxim shots a dangerous magical silver bullet. Pressed by the melee and the wall, the little angle left makes him fail the shot that lands on the cavern rocky wall when the vampire steps a bit back getting out of the small viable angle.
The bugbear vampire chuckles as the human sorcerer falls to the ground. He then redoubles his attack over Ryan.
mwk Morningstar (1-handed): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12

Slam: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
B damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
But his shield and Marigold's protection helps him deflect once an again the vampire attacks that seems amused and not frustrated nevertheless.

Round 3
AC = 22
HP = 34/34
Weapon Equipped = Silver Dagger(Magic Weapon)
Condition(s) = Blessed
"So you wait until your minions do their part in tiring us out, before stepping in to fight us. That's not very sporting of ya, considering you're looking for good 'prey'. You should let us rest, and we'll put up a proper fight." Kikinnin looks down on his silver cheese-cutter, frowning at how little metal there is in his hand.
He treats the blade with his Oil Standard Action, then moves around the bugbear vamp, giving flank to Ryan and likely provoking an AoO "Well, now, if I understand your weakness, I've got a letter opener here that will hurt as long as I can stick you with it, so why don't you stop messing with our priest, and start swinging my direction?"
To be clear, Kikinnin has a Silver Dagger, now treated with Oil of Magic Weapon.
_JJ Surabar |
JJ, now used to human blood on his blades doesn't look quite as upset by it as he did recently. Or maybe it is the fact the man had seared two holes into him.
Stepping up to the bugbear he avoids his usual chatter. This was an opponent tougher than any the group had faced. A vampire if the others were right. Such a foe was worth of due respect and caution.
attack-short sword,TWF,bless: 1d20 + 7 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 7 - 2 + 1 = 23
attack-mace,TWF,bless: 1d20 + 6 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 6 - 2 + 1 = 13
The sword was true, even if the mace was off target.

Round 2
Cast Defensively(DC 17): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Ryan's attempt at casting his last 1st level spell fizzles as he backs into the enemy mage while dodging the vampire's swipe, completely mispronouncing a key phrase.
Grumbling he steps away from the bugbear.
[I]Round 3 [/]
Ryan withdraws one of the 2 potions of magic weapon. He has and applies it to the silver light mace
Stepping back up to flank with Kikinnin if 5-for step still allowed.

Marigold Montajay |
Round 2
As Marigold lets out her strange shriek, she suddenly notices that JJ has already taken care of the problem and Chorlyndyr lies bleeding on the floor.
Oh. Well, that works too.
Having already witnessed firsthand how risky JJ's fighting technique can be, she instead steps over to him and calls upon the same protection that she did for Ryan.
There you go...please don't get yourself disemboweled!
Marigold steps behind JJ and casts Protection from Evil on him, now that Chorlyndyr has been taken care of!
Round 3
Though she has her silvered weapon in hand, Marigold is doubtful as to how effective she can be with it. Opting to hold back and allow the others to position themselves as they need, she offers Ryan a bit of guidance - even if he can't understand it.
"ત્યાં, ત્યાં તેને હિટ! તેની ઘૂંટણની તોડી!"
"There, h-h-hit h-h-him there! B-b-break his kn-kn-knee!"
Casting Guidance on Ryan!
GM Rutseg |
Instead of her shriek, Marigold casts protection from evil on JJ.
When Kikinnin starts applying his oil in the silvery blade of the dagger, Drakthar profits his distraction to smash him with his morningstar.
mwk Morningstar (2-handed): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13
B damage: 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
But the weapon lands in the ground breaking some rocks.
Kikinnin finishes anointing the oil, then moves around the bugbear flanking it with Ryan.
JJ steps next to the bugbear vampire, slashing with both silvered weapons, but Drakthar skin seems tougher than a full armor as the blades are both deflected.
Ryan fizzles with a spell, then steps back to apply his own oil to the blade, and steps back to set a flanking position with Kikinnin.
When Juraan raises his hand and pronounces the magic words, the most vibrant two magic missiles you have ever seen fly from his hands towards Drakthar as two reference points in the darkness of the cavern. One bursts on the bugbear's chest while the other one does so on his right hand. The vamp shrieks with pain, this is a howl that calls for vengeance, but you also see some half-smile on the corner of his mouth.
Marigold touches Ryan giving him some guidance.
Part of the damage caused by the force spell quickly heals in Drakthar's body. "Cleric" he musters looking at Ryan's Abadar symbol and he once again attacks ferociously at the god's servant.
mwk Morningstar (1-handed): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17
B damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Slam: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
B damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Ryan parries the morningstar with his shield, but he is defenseless against the slam of Drakthar's other hand. When he thinks he is going to be drained a divine protection, that one cast by Marigold, explodes on the vampire hand, deflecting the evil hand from the striking trajectory.
Drakthar grumbles with ire and steps to the side out of the flanking.
mwk Morningstar (2-handed): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18
