Jaegar Alvar Tarnshiav |
== @Stemboy: I hope Flare was a reasonable standby option in your trip across Kentucky. ==
Jaegar hopes to bring down the alchemist before he completely pollutes the sewer. "Does anyone know why he keeps throwing those vials in the water? Is there some type of sewer summoning of which I have never heard?"
He fires another arrow at Firedrake...
Ranged Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Arrow Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Glad I'm rolling a d8 for all these damages. I could be rolling a d2 and get the same results...
Kristen Mensbane |
Kristen will move around her allies and then cast a cantrip at the red thug.
Ranged touch: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
ray of frost: 1d3 ⇒ 2 cold
GM Baerlie |
Jaegar shoots another arrow at the Alchemist hitting him in his chest. He falls over almost into the water. Kristen freezes the red-headed thug with a ray of frost. Gilfroy continues to animate the rat to distract one of the thugs. Vrald attacks the thug in front of him but is not able to deal any damage to him.

Jaegar Alvar Tarnshiav |
Jaegar repositions slightly for an unimpeded shot at the thugs. He utilizes his "Deadeye Bowman" trait to ignore the Red thug while shooting at the Blue thug.
Ranged Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19 Red does not provide +4 AC
Arrow Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
My streak of 1s & 2s comes to an end! The Stag God smiles on Jaegar.
Vrald Sehir |
Vrald allows some of his frustration to show.
"You cannot keep this up forever.."
attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
GM Baerlie |
Jaegar shoots another arrow at one of the thugs hitting him in the chest. The thug falls over into the sewer water. The additional attacks of Vrald and Kristen also bring the remaining thug down. With a big wound in his belly he falls on his knees, his head hits the alchemist's table pushing some vials to the floor. He lands next to the rat illusion.
Combat over
The Alchemist carried three more vials of alchemist's fire and a leather armor. The thugs both have a spiked chain and also a leather armor.
Kristen Mensbane |
Kristen also searches the area after casting detect magic.
Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (15) + 0 = 15
Vrald Sehir |
Vrald shrugs.
"May as well take some of these flasks..." he pretends to throw one to Kristen, but stops himself with a laugh.
"Who wants one?"
AFter handing them out he again leads the way deeper into the sewer.
GM Baerlie |
Ahead is a junction where a smaller sewer line once joined the main passage. The ceiling of the smaller passage partially collapsed, filling most of that tunnel with rubble. The surface of the rubble pile seems to shift strangely and closer examination reveals thousands of tiny vermin fleeing into cracks and shadows.
The area of rubble is difficult terrain to traverse. Although the stones block the tunnel, some sewage does manage to trickle through.
Kristen Mensbane |
"Oh, I knew I shouldn't have used up my fire wand on those stupid monkeys on that last mission! Unfortunately, I have no spells available that will help against a large group of rats like that, so we will have to rely on the alchemists' fire..."
Jaegar Alvar Tarnshiav |
Jaegar tries to recall tidbits about critters:
Knowledge Dungeoneering: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25 P.S. I thought this was about the rats. My check should only be 22 for basic dungeoneering, my Monster Lore adds 3
Jaegar shares all gleaned nuggets with the group...
Vrald Sehir |
"Hmm, maybe we should not use the fire then."
Muses Vrald.
He searches through his pack looking for some rations.
"If we can lure them away from the trapped gas, then may we be able to use the fire safely further back?"
Jaegar Alvar Tarnshiav |
"Vrald, you're looking at this all wrong. We should secure ourselves around the corner, and use the trapped gases to our advantage: I say we do the following:
1) Hide a safe but observable distance away
2) Launch an alchemists fire into the swamp gases above the vermin
3) Wait for the catastrophic explosion to kill the bugs and rats
4) Move along peacefully.
How does that sound as a counter-offer? Fighting fire with fire, or bugs with explosives."
Kristen Mensbane |
"Sounds reasonable to me, Jaegar."
Kristen gets out of the way of the likely subsequent explosion.
Maeron Calaerdaer |
Maeron nods, before ushering Tenderstump a good distance away.
"If you feel it is wise. I will stay at the back with Tenderstump to prevent him being at risk of the flame."
Jaegar Alvar Tarnshiav |
"Gilfroy and Vrald, do you have an opinion? I'm happy to attempt launching the alchemists fire. If you all want to stay back 30-ish feet, I'll hang out around 20 feet and try to hit the sewer gases with the alchemists fire. It should be relatively easy..."
Jaegar casts Guidance on himself while his companions move away and attempts to hurl the alchemists fire at ceiling containing the pocket of swamp gas.
Ranged Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Direct Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4 Hopefully the direct damage will also apply to the swarm, being so close to the ceiling.
GM Baerlie |
Jaegar ignites the sewer gas and it explodes burning everything in a 20ft radius.
Gas Explosion: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 1) = 2
The explosion burns the vermin, but there are still enough left to attack.

Kristen will toss a ray of frost at the vermin, as that's the only thing she has left that can deal any damage to the swarm.
Ranged touch: 1d20 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (7) + 1 - 4 = 4 <- (-4 for cover from allies)
Ray of frost: 1d3 ⇒ 1 cold
Unfortunately, her ray goes very wide.
GM Baerlie |
Alchemist's Fire Damage Round 2: 1d6 ⇒ 2
After Kristen shot her ray of frost at the vermin, Vrald throws another flask of alchemist's fire at the creatures. They start to burn immediately and after a few seconds most of the individuals are dead, the rest scatters in different directions.
Combat over
Maeron Calaerdaer |
Before Maeron even has chance to respond the swarm is destroyed.
"Very effective."
The treesinger and his companion follow behind Vrald as he advances.
Jaegar Alvar Tarnshiav |
"Hmmm. Vrald, thanks for your willingness to try a tactic based on environment. I would have expected a bigger boom. Should we press on through the corridor?"
@ Beatrice - Thanks for trying the 2d6! Too bad the machine gave you snake eyes.
Kristen Mensbane |
"Well-done, my friends. I wish I had been more help in such a situation... I must remember to go shopping for some more scrolls after this mission."
GM Baerlie |
Ahead a faint light glimmers in the dark. Slowly it resolves into a crude lantern held by a toothless old beggar who holds a chair leg in his other hand. Beside him stands a scrawny youth, similarly armed but obviously terrified. Behind the two derelicts is an open door bearing the symbol of the beggar’s bowl, coin, and key.
The old man eyes you warily as you approach. “If yer intentions be peaceful, Abadar makes you welcome.” he says.
Jaegar Alvar Tarnshiav |
"Our intentions involve research, and the discovery of a portal to another realm. A man was found emerging from the sewers, and we would like to evaluate the veracity of his yarn. Do you have any awareness of odd goings-on? We hope to prevent any threats to the people of Absalom, like yourself."
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Jaegar steps back and gives the others a chance to voice their opinions as well.
He tries to piece together the situation, and how the 'Prince' would have been found here.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Kristen Mensbane |
"Sir, our intentions are indeed peaceful. We seek counsel from the Almsman. Do you know of him?"
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13
Anyone want to aid that a bit? :-(
Maeron Calaerdaer |
Don't you love it when the social rolls go against you. Maeron will attempt to aid Kristen, just because she's asking specifically about the Almsman.
The druid steps forward slightly, trying to hide his aloof demeanour as much as possible.
"We are operatives of the Pathfinder Society, we foster no ill intent."
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (7) + 0 = 7
GM Baerlie |
"Pathfinder Society? What's that supposed to be. But you can enter, the Almsman is behind these doors." the old man says and steps aside after opening the doors.
Beyond the door, a short flight of steps leads up into what appears to be the basement crypt of a church of Abadar. Perhaps two dozen beggars huddle among sarcophagi, some sleeping, some haggling over bits of junk or scraps of food laid out on blankets.
A tall man in clean robes wearing a plain copper mask walks among them. As you enter he regards you coolly and says, “If you respect this sanctuary, I offer you what sanctuary I can. Otherwise, begone!”
