The Moar Core Tour (Inactive)

Game Master BretI

A Core PFS campaign that will go from level 1 through level 12, completing all of Season 5 in the process.

At least, that was the original plan. We made it to 5th level with a few characters leaving and others joining. At that point life had gotten in the way for several of the players and interest in Core was waning. The group had one last run and then we closed it down.

The group starts making their way back towards Silverhall. Lander still takes a position at the front of the group, ready for any trouble. It doesn’t take you long to find the trade road that will eventually lead to Silverhall.

The road narrows here, leading over a well-worn stone bridge that crosses a stream. Trees dot the landscape to both sides of the bridge, and the rushing of water and the croaking of frogs give the scene an air of tranquility.

"And sometimes..." he adds, "you run across a diatryma, which is a kind of axe beak. Or perhaps two of them. Now, that name sounds scary, but it's just a big bird, an animal, that doesn't necessarily have any sort of evil intent." Studying them with a bit of care, Garif continues, "But they are pretty big birds, so it pays to be careful."

Does my Knowledge check allow me to know what such creatures eat? Do they use their axe beaks to chop down trees and eat them, or to carve up bipeds for lunch?

The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

Additional Knowledge for those who made the DC 11 (so far only Garif):
Diatryma are smaller than normal axe-beaks, but no less ferocious.

Keen-witted and powerful avian predators, axe beaks compete with wolves and hunting cats for prey upon vast, open steppes and prairies. Although feared for their boldness and territorial natures, these giant birds prove eminently tamable, making useful guardians, hunters, and even steeds when kept well fed. Axe beaks are relatively social creatures, forming small groups in which both males and females hunt together. They nest in immense mounds made of sticks, branches, leaves, and whatever else they can scavenge (including the bones and equipment of previous meals), with each nest used by a large group of axe beaks.

This is about the time of season where they would be nesting and protecting the eggs.

These stout flightless birds stand upon two long, taloned legs, but it is its axe-shaped beak that looks the most ferocious. They have dark feathers and an orange beak. They stand about 6-7 feet tall.

Having tried to educate Lander a bit, Garif turns to Shieara and replies to her description of him, "Well, I'm not always prone to rose-smelling, particularly when there are large carnivorous birds on the horizon, whose nest may be located somewhere nearby. But it's important to show our would-be-adventurer friend that it's not all about fighting, right? In fact, I've left out one of the greatest joys of traveling the world - the chance to see more kinds of rocks and minerals in their natural settings!"

As if this has brought an important thought to mind, Garif gestures to Lander and says, while keeping a wary eye on the lesser axe beaks, "As I'm sure you've noticed, the stream ahead of us carves a gentle 'S' pattern in the terrain. This is due to resistance on one side, perhaps from a fine-grained granite, which is less prone to erosion by the flow of water than something like steatite, which some call soapstone. The opposite bank erodes, forming a bit of a bend, but the form in which it erodes is semi-circular, which forces the water back the opposite direction, and so on and so on, creating this wavy shape. Such streams will often have very fine-grained sediment in the bottom..." He continues on in this vein for some time, hoping that the lordling is interested enough - or bored enough - to not simply charge at the diatrymas.

Damiar raises an eyebrow as she reads the young lordling's body language, and thinks of a way to phrase this so that the others can understand. "You're not interested in taking them on for personal glory or for sport, are you? Yes, you want to show that you can do this... but you also want to protect your people from a possible hazard."

She bites her lip. "As an elf, I hate the idea of hunting parents just to steal the young. But you are right... these wild creatures are a hazard, especially when nesting and broody. So the way I see it, you have two possibilities here. One is to fight them, and the other is to relocate that nest and the parents somewhere else. The second path is far more dangerous, though, and I'm not sure that even with Garif, Rees and Phinny we could pull it off as a team."

She paces. "Alright. Here's the deal. We'll let you fight them, but you must first tell me that you will find good homes for the eggs with reputable breeders. Pick people who know animals and will treat them kindly! Also, I want you to go in with a plan. These creatures are fast, and their sudden charge can be deadly. So... Show me that you're ready for this, and come up with your plan. Remember that adventurers act as a team, so make use of our talents too. If you need it, don't be afraid to ask for advice -- that's needed for everyone competent, whether a ruler or a traveling warrior."

Garif considers Damiar's answer, nodding along as she speaks and admiring her insight's into the lordling's likely motivation, before he weighs in, "If you wish to try another approach, Rees and I have some limited ability to bond with such creatures. I don't know if we can convince them to yield their eggs to us, but we might be able to lead them away from the road where they don't present such a hazard to passersby."

Rees and Garif both have +1 to Wild Empathy, so we might be able to encourage the big birds to move along, though we'd probably have to help move their eggs somewhere. I'll see what Lander comes up with.

They charge at intruders? Good to know!

Looking to Garif, he asks “So you are both experienced animal tamers and trainers?

He thinks a moment, then pointing to Garif and Damiar he says “You two seem to know the most about these creatures. Since they are territorial, will they just wander back here if moved?

There are several ways to break a charge, one of the easier being to just move out of the way.” He grabs a stick and starts drawing in the dirt. Drawing in the bridge, he says “If we can draw them across the bridge that would work the best. It would allow us to have people set to flank as the birds came over it.” He draws marks for one person on each side and one directly in line with the bridge. “The flankers could intercept the charge while the one being charged moves to the side.

Thinking a little more, he says “It would be challenging, but perhaps if we hit with the side of the blade and aimed for non-vital areas we could disable them without killing.” He seems a little unsure on that point.

I have been told a good leader also listens to advice. What advice do you have to add?

Yes, you are right, the roads should be safe to travel on. These creatures, though, aren't bandits, they are just themselves. I think we should let Rees and Garif see what they can do before we attack them."

But Lander's idea might accomplish the same thing. "As for tactics," he continues, "I've had pretty good luck on this trip using the plants nearby to entangle our foes, so I could try that on the birds. Even if it only works on one of them, at least we won't have to fight them both at once, or face quite so much weight of charging axe beak."

The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

My reading is that entangle requires plants in the area. There none on the bridge.
I don’t think there are any in the middle of the road either. I’m going to say there must be plants somewhere in the square for it to work.

I agree with that ruling, Bret. I was looking at the map where the birds are now, rather than where we'd try to lure them to under Lander's plan. Let's proceed with the plan and Garif will contribute one way or another.

Good. Yes, it will work where they are now. I didn’t want you to be surprised.

"I might be able to knock them out, but I'll have to get close to them. I'd rather not do it alone!"

Clearly puzzled, Lander asks Phinellippa "How can you do that?"

Obviously not understanding what Phinellippa means, Lander just says “As long as it doesn’t kill them, should be fine.

Looking around, he says “Right, it sounds like we have our plan. Everyone, pick your locations and we will try this! If it starts going badly, we will have to quit pulling our punches.

Lander is willing to be bait or one of the flankers.

Garif moves to the side of the road, keeping Nico close at hand, and says, "I'm ready when you all are. If we don't have a better way to draw them across, I could send Nico part of the way over and call him back, as he's very quick. He'd probably listen, in spite of being faced with the two biggest, juiciest birds he's ever seen."
