Alden looks in and in some amusement
"Would you like me to close the door?"
I'd suggest everyone exits? or delays until after the swarm?

Fort Save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Assuming I suffer no further ailments, I will move to Alden, assuming I can go around the swarm, and not through it.
Stumbling back from sudden eruption of tomes, Brother Tophor edges back toward the door, alert for the maniacal books.
Total Defense +4 AC

Alden prepares to slam the door shut once everyone is out of that room, keeping that Swarm of books or Book Swarm or Flapping Pages away from the party.

![]() |

The entire party is able to pile out of the room, and Alden slams the door shut...
...but the sound of rustling pages can clearly be heard from inside the room.
Combat over, unless you decide to go back in the room.
What now?

![]() |

"I think we can come back later." Alden chuckles as he closes the door and secures it though he has no way to lock it.

Five broad desks line the walls of this study room. Each work surface is covered with stacked volumes brimming with page markers as well as numerous open books.
Standard search rules. Let me know the specifics of what you want to do.

Wary of more enchanted tomes, Brother Tophor gingerly searches the books for any relevant information or ciphers.

1d5 ⇒ 2
A careful search of the room reveals the following clues:
Hidden Gem:
Right next to one great discovery, you make another incredible find!
Clue: Use this clue when you or another PC discovers a clue or text to find one additional clue or text, if any remain in the room. (If attempting ot use this in a room that doesn’t have any more clues, it doesn’t count; this clue can be used again.)
Encarthan Maps:
These maps depict Lake Encarthan, the Isle of Terror, and the nations that surround it. Of particular interest are the hundreds of hand-drawn notes and lines showing troop movements, preserving the changing plans of the brilliant generals who orchestrated the Shining Crusade.
What now?

![]() |

Have you been able to fix the problem with the map yet?
After copying all the clues, Hyrgan says "Should we go back and try to defeat the books, go back into the room with The Guardian and find what is left or should we take on the blind caretaker? No matter what we will need to stop the books from fluttering around before we leave because as long as they are about everyone will know someone was here."

![]() |

Can any of us deal with that swarm? Or Do you want to head back and see if the swarm is still active? Also which room are we in now? We maybe missing something in the other rooms. Maybe a secret door or something.

![]() |

You are currently in the room with the five desks on the map (FYI, the map *is* updated).
Going back and listening at the door, the party is able to hear all-to-clearly the sound of rustling pages.
The book swarm is still active.

![]() |

Can't deal with swarms at the moment...lol

![]() |

"I'm not sure what we can do about a bunch of flying books," Tophor whispers to the others. "What's the plan for the guardian?" As they approach the door, he strains his ears to hear beyond.
Perception: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17 Whiff...

"I have an area of effect spell that I can use when I use a performance, as well as a couple vials of things." Hyrgan whispers back.

![]() |

"But would it damage those books? We are supposed to be discreet aren't we?" Alden whispers.

![]() |

Anything is better then leaving them flying around. Lets just not blast them with fire and such.

![]() |

"Then let me go first. I'll use my flail and attempt to subdue it then."
Alden readies action to strike out at the swarm once the door opens.

The group goes back to the door to the swarm of books. Hyrgan grabs a vial of liquid ice from his bag. "I figure that if I use this vial of liquid ice and then the alchemist's fire, the books won't look much worse for the wear."

![]() |

"Won't the alchemist fire burn those books? Burnt books and pages are bound to have someone else notice." Alden points out.

![]() |

"I think that will do...What do the rest of you think? I admit knowing very little about ermm aggressive pages."

![]() |

Dang. I knew I was going to regret not putting a point into that knowledge skill...or having bardic knowledge. Next level, if I make it, I will put at least one point into it.

![]() |

Brother Tophor shrugs. "I know little of such things. Maybe the lion head knows? I'm more concerned with what to do about this guardian, if anything. We're running out of time."

![]() |

"Open the door then, We'll risk it. Time being wasted as we talke here. I'll do my best to bring it down."
Using my readied action previously posted.
"Then let me go first. I'll use my flail and attempt to subdue it then."
Alden readies action to strike out at the swarm once the door opens.

Hyrgan throws open the door to the book swarm and throws the vial of liquid ice into the midst of it.

Hyrgan throws a vial of liquid ice, splashing several of the books, and causing ice to form on a few covers.
Round 1: Wadreskus, Hyrgan, Tophor, Anaduno, BS (-1), Alden
@Alden: I know that you have a readied action, but the swarm is not currently adjacent to the door. I will be happy to take that as your attack roll when it rolls around to your turn, though.

![]() |

No problem, Alden will step forward and bash. I also have being slapped upside the head for not updating my chars properly. It seems I have a GM Credit on this Char pushing him to level 3. lol. This doesn't push it up to anything else does it?

Obviously unsure about this course of action, Brother Tophor prepares to support his comrades, nonetheless. Nocking blunt arrows to his bowstring, he eyes his targets in the swarm of enchanted books.
Bow Flurry #1: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 6
Bow Flurry #2: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Note: This is bludgeoning damage. I'm hoping to stop these things without making too big a mess.
