They are dated today

This unusual room has a lush layer of furs on the floor. White and black bearskins, dire wolf hides, and the skins of all of the great cats have been piled throughout the room. Along one wall, posed so as to almost appear real, is the skin and mounted head of a red dragon. Along the opposite wall are mounted the heads of wild boars, a giant, several dwarves, a displacer beast, owl bear, troll, unicorn, and woolly rhinocerous.

Along the other wall is cabinets displaying various trophies.

There is a door to north.

Smiling at Liam's 'turning of the tables', Magnus follows him over to the door.

Just waiting to see what Red Team do or say

If that is the case, then I think it is up to the guards now. I pulled Aukan back, undid his binds and healed him. What is their reaction. If they have none, then I will continue to lead him away and out of the complex.

They had no issues with him unbinding and healing him but no way are they letting you stand him up or walk him out

Oi - You aren't going anywhere Priest. Stand where you are until we get this sorted.

Goliath Barbarian 3 HP 35/35, AC 16, Initiative +1, Perception +3 PP13 PI 9

So, then I guess our ruse is working? Since we have their attention...now the trouble will be getting free.

You are a weakling and a coward to strike a man thus bound! Free me and face my Battle Spirit!

Aukan is unbound but seated atm

Karl pulls Aukan to his feet.

Come now, you have no authority to arrest this man, based simply upon what we have told you. He is no dwarf, and I refuse to turn him over to you. He will be leaving with us, and you may call on us when your leader sees fit to deal with us directly and not simply through underlings. Tell Draco Stormsailor that he knows where to find us. You are foregoing an excellent opportunity to improve your station, good sir.

The sergeant puts his hand to his sword and the other three guards copy him.

Stop or you're all going to jail - and in case you haven't figured it out with my boot to the big fellas balls, I'll make up whatever I want for wasting our time. Now, whats it gonna be?

Female Human

Astrid sighs and hands Aukan his shield and hammer. "Aggravated assault, maybe?" she says with resignation as she reaches for her blade.

Ooookay. Its initiative time. Gimme a bit

Red Team: Inits 2,0 and 2. Rounded to +1
Guards: Rounded to +0.

For this battle we'll just do as single groups.

Red Team: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Guards: 1d20 ⇒ 6

The guards draw and attack.

The sergeant and one guard attack Aukan, seeing him as the bigger threat. One guard attacks Karl and another Astrid.

Attacks on Aukan
Sgt. 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 for 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Guard 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 for 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Attacks on Karl
Guard 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23 for 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Attacks on Astrid
Guard 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 for 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Human Male Cleric (Acolyte) 4 ; AC: 18; HP: 28/28; passive perception 16; passive insight 16; Init +0; Saves: Wis +6, Cha +3; HD 4/4; Spells Lvl1: 3/4 Lvl2: 0/3

Round 1

Karl attacks the guard that hit him.

Mace Att: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Mace Dam: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

The attack hits and the guard grunts at the impact.

Female Human

Astrid sighs and dodges the clumsy sword strike, then smoothly draws her sword and whacks at the guard with the blunt end, attempting to constrain her rage...

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (2, 4) + 3 = 9

...although, unaccustomed to attacking to subdue, the blade misses by a mile.

Wow, the dice gods... they be hatin' on me :P

Goliath Barbarian 3 HP 35/35, AC 16, Initiative +1, Perception +3 PP13 PI 9

I was kinda hoping that Aukan would be unarmed for this fight...would make it more epic.

You will cower before my Battle Spirit! Aukan bellows as he begins raging and whips himself into a Frenzy!

Rage:
Rage In battle, you fight with primal ferocity. On your turn, you can enter a rage as a bonus action. While raging, you gain the following benefits if you aren’t wearing heavy armor:
• You have advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws.
• When you make a melee weapon attack using Strength, you gain a bonus to the damage roll that increases as you gain levels as a barbarian, as shown in the Rage Damage column(+2) of the Barbarian table.
• You have resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage.
If you are able to cast spells, you can’t cast them or concentrate on them while raging.
Your rage lasts for 1 minute. It ends early if you are knocked unconscious or if your turn ends and you haven’t attacked a hostile creature since your last turn or taken damage since then. You can also end your rage on your turn as a bonus action.
Once you have raged the number of times shown for your barbarian level in the Rages column (3) of the Barbarian table, you must finish a long rest before you can rage again.

Frenzy:
Starting when you choose this path at 3rd level, you can go into a frenzy when you rage. If you do so, for the duration of your rage you can make a single melee weapon attack as a bonus action on each of your turns after this one. When your rage ends, you suffer one level of exhaustion (as described in appendix A).

Aukan stands and attacks the nearest guard, pummeling him with his fists

Punch: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17 Damage: 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Bonus Punch: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23 Damage: 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

Aukan's fists, as hard as granite, crunch into the man's face. I will crush you! Crush you to goo!

Female Human

Sorry Aukan, but... unarmed strikes deal 1+Strength damage. Only by having levels in Monk or the tavern brawler feat does it upgrade to 1d4.

Goliath Barbarian 3 HP 35/35, AC 16, Initiative +1, Perception +3 PP13 PI 9

It would still do 6 damage since I rolled minimum....since I'm raging I'm assuming I still get the bonus +2 damage. Tavern Brawler eh....looks promising.

I love tavern brawler :) - its 12 damage total 1 + 3 str + 2 rage bonus on each attack

The guard goes down by Aukans fist attack!

Red Team Fight Round 2.

Attacks on

Aukan
Sgt 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21 for 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Astrid
Guard 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22 for 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Karl
Guard 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14 for 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

The Sgt calls for help!

Blue team

This large room contains a huge and richly quilted bed, a table with four chairs, a number of tapestries, and a wardrobe closet. On the table is a full bottle of wine and two crystal goblets. The tapestries illustrate battle and sailing scenes in great detail, and feature prominently the exploits of a tall, black-bearded warrior with a “D’ emblazoned on the front of his tunic.

Goliath Barbarian 3 HP 35/35, AC 16, Initiative +1, Perception +3 PP13 PI 9

Aukan grunts after being scratched HP 29/32
You will be silent! Aukan grabs at the Sgt. attempting to subdue him

STR: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 2 = 6

Trying to grab him and grapple/subdue him if possible. But with that roll...not really.

Yeah 1 is an auto miss but I like your out of the box thinking - 5th ed is pretty open ended. Incidently its Athletics and not strength though your total bonus is the same. Str + proficiency bonus

Human Male Cleric (Acolyte) 4 ; AC: 18; HP: 28/28; passive perception 16; passive insight 16; Init +0; Saves: Wis +6, Cha +3; HD 4/4; Spells Lvl1: 3/4 Lvl2: 0/3

Round 2

Karl attacks the guard that hit him, but this time he directs his attacks so that they are not lethal, but instead aimed at knocking him out.

Mace Non-Lethal Att: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Mace Non-Lethal Dam: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

We should think about getting out of here before the barracks falls on us in full.

Karls attack is a one that glances off the guards mailed shoulder without harm.

Female Human

Astrid grunts as the guard lands a scratch across her face, and struggles to keep hold of her rage while lining up for a second swing...

Reckless Grand Slam: 1d20 ⇒ 18
Reckless Grand Slam: 1d20 ⇒ 12
Damage: 2d6 + 13 ⇒ (6, 1) + 13 = 20

If that guard goes down, Astrid subdues him, whirls around, and takes another swing at the nearest guard.

Reckless Grand Slam: 1d20 ⇒ 6
Reckless Grand Slam: 1d20 ⇒ 17
Damage: 2d6 + 13 ⇒ (4, 1) + 13 = 18

Subdual on that one, too. And remember all attacks against Astrid get advantage until her next turn.

You need to put the calculations into your rolls Astrid. The to hit rolls are accurate as the great weapon master cancels out your attack bonus but I like to see it all listed out

Astrids blow takes down the guard attacking her easily.

Her second blow is aimed at the Sergeant and winds him badly as he exhales after the mighty blow lands.

Goliath Barbarian 3 HP 35/35, AC 16, Initiative +1, Perception +3 PP13 PI 9

Awesome, while raging Barbarians get +2 to STR related checks so it would be a +7 to Athletics. I'm so gonna take Tavern Brawler now and have Aukan go apeguano crazy on people...

Magnus will search the room for anything hidden, like under the bed, or behind the tapestries

Liam keeps an eye out for any approaching guards. This looks like the kind of place that might have something useful.

perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

Blue Team: Liam opens the warddrobe and finds many articles of clothing and a suit of plate mail on an armour stand, each emblazoned with a large obvious 'D' on the chest.

Magnus does a quick but very thorough search of the room and finds a knot of wood that is out of place. Pushing it reveals a secret door that opens with a 'click'.

A large chest topped by a coffer are stacked at one end of this narrow room, and a small writing table and chair are at the far end. Apiece of parchment is on the table. It is written is some strange code that seems to make no sense whatsoever.

Red Team: You dispatch the remaining two guards in the next round, leaving you alone in the courtyard... for now but guards sound like they are rapidly stirring in the barracks you are standing in front of.

Female Human

Astrid wipes the blood from her face. "As much as I hate to say it, we need to buy Liam and Magnus some more time. Aukan, pick up your hammer and shield-the Battle Spirits will sing of your glory." The young woman then shifts into a resolute stance, ready to fight the horde of guards.

Is the chest or coffer locked?

Softly calling to Liam, Magnus shows him the room and the items within. He points out the odd parchment and shrugs his shoulders as he adds it to the items he has already collected. He next examines the chest and coffer.

The are both locked.

I am going to add the traditional GM comment that accompanies a decision that could end badly. "Are you really sure you want to do that?"

No, Astrid, we must be gone now. They will get more time as the barracks empties. Let's head back to town.

Karl begins to move towards the town.

We need to get while the gettin's good, guys. We cannot possibly hope to take out an entire barracks, regardless of the bravado of our PCs.

Human Male Wizard 4; AC12(15); HP22/[22]; passive perception 13; passive insight 11; Init +2; Saves: S-1 D+2 Cn+1 I+6 W+3 Ch+1; HD 4/[4]; Spells Lvl1: 4/4 Lvl2: 3/3

Looking over to Liam, Magnus asks, "Do you know anything about opening locks?"

How big are these items? Could we carry them out on our own?

Magnus: The chest is heavy. It would take the two of you to carry it out and it would be slow and awkward going. The coffer, while made of stout wood, is small enough to be tucked under your arm. It rattles when shaken - something light is inside, something at odds with the weight of the box.

Think of something about the weight of a human head, and about the dimensions of an A5 piece of paper.

Goliath Barbarian 3 HP 35/35, AC 16, Initiative +1, Perception +3 PP13 PI 9

Aukan begins breathing rapid heavy breaths, almost hyperventilating

The. Battle. Spirit. is. appeased. he says between breaths

Aukan picks up his weapons and moves to exit the area, following Karl who seems to be the wisest member of the group.

Aukan has 1 level of exhaustion...which I'm not sure entirely what that means because I don't have the DMG in front of me.

Level 1? Disadvantage to ability checks. Level 2? Speed halved

Female Human

Astrid nods. "I suppose you are the wiser among us, Karl. Yet I worry that Liam and Magnus would be caught. It seems only a week ago I rescued that boy from a fire..." Sighing, she holsters her weapon and leaves.

As they quickly retreat,

Aye, I see your concern, but we gave them a distraction that is sure to buy them the time they need and then some. I assume that most of the remaining barracks will be after us after the beating we gave those three.

Liam looks to Magnus, no idea about locks, except to bash them.

anyway, lets get get going, Take that smaller chest and we need to scat. I am a great warrior but even I can't handle an entire army.

"Darn! Whatever we are looking for is probably in that chest, but you are right! We had better leave now"

Magnus heads out the way they came in, tucking the coffer into his shirt as they leave.

Blue Team: The coffer wont really fit in a shirt. Its something that needs to be carried under an arm but Magnus re-arranges his cloak to conceal it.

You make your way hastily out the way you came.

Stealth (taking the average) 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16.

You make your way out of the second floor without being spotted though you can hear commotion in the rooms on the right side of the main hall that the stairs led up to.

Down the stairs you go.

There seems to be an awful commotion at the front of the building.

Stealth (taking the average) 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9.

As you make your way down the stairs three guards in leather armour run towards you at a dead sprint from the rear of the courtyard.

Halt!, the cry.

You can also hear guards approaching from the left of the building. You can see the other group exiting the gate. It may be that exit from the gate you entered in is about to be cut off.

***

Red Team: You make your way rapidly towards the gates you entered in.

You can see Magnus and Liam moving from the second floor down to the courtyard and three guards running towards them.

You on the other hand have issues of your own. A squad of ten shouting guards are rounding the corner of the building and are in pursuit.
