Zebela:
You sense strong magic from beyond the opening in the wall. You notice that several large (normal looking vines have pushed open what most have been a hidden door. And no worries about any delays. We're moving along nicely.

Fenn:

You do not find any traps. If you plan to search the room, please give me a perception check.

Dervick:
Walking into the cellar you see that several shelves fill the room from floor to ceiling. There are hundreds of bottle on the shelves. Down one row, you come across the body of a dead goblin. Dozens of bottles lay empty around the creature.

"Hey guys, I think it's safe. Dervick, cover me; I'm going to take a look."

Bringor steps into the room and looks around.

Fenn pauses to acknowledge Brin, "Good job Brin...! Find tha' bottle o' dwarven boze...!"

Turning back to the rift Fenn mutters, "I'm gonna see what the hell this is..."

Fenn move cautiously toward the revealed secret door drawing his shortsword... wielding both long and short eyeing the vines warily.

He listens at the door first... then tries to push it open with the tip of his longsword.. trying to figure out what that bright light is comming from...

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

Stepping just inside to room to cover Bringor with his bow, Dervick spies the body of the goblin and chuckles.

"I guess some just can't hold their drink."

"Careful Fenn," Zabela says softly, a hand on his back, "there's powerful magic coming from there."

Fenn tenses slightly at the gentle feminine touch at his back... his elven ears coloring slightly, "Uhm.. ok, t-thanks for the warning.. Za-bela.."

This close and her touching him he can feel the warmth of her nearby and the scent of the elven woman bringing his senses to full awareness... somewhat distracting to the young half-elf...

He strains to focus his attention on the glowing coming from behind the concealed door and not the elven woman so close... getting ready to interpose between Zabela and any threat that might present itself as he opens the door...


Dervick:
As you get closer to the goblin, you notice that he is not passed out, but dead. Did the little bugger actually drink himself to death?

Bringor:
Checking around the room, picking up a bottle here or there, you do not come across a bottle marked with an anvil. During your search, you do come a "strange" piece of masonry on the back wall of the room.

Fenn and Zebela:
The door swings easily on hidden hinges. The room is quite large and appears to be a laboratory. There are several tables lining the walls, they are covered with stoppered vials, beakers, and burners. Several stacks of books sit here and there. By far, however, the most noticeable thing in the room is a large (10 ft. radius) mirror that is positioned in the middle of the room. Bright light floods out of the mirror, as does unfamiliar sounds and smells. In the middle of the mirror is a large chunk of stone that fell from the ceiling and smashed the mirror. Vines and plants are poking their way out of the larger pieces of the mirror and a brightly colored bird is sitting on top of the chunk of ceiling. The map has been updated.

Jeseare, what are you doing?

"Hey, Dervick, look at this!" Bringor points at the strange masonry. "D'you think we should try to figure this out, or check with Fenn first?"

Fenn looks around the laboratory...

"Wha, tha HELL is going on in heah?!?!"

Fenn sheaths his shortsword, keeping his longsword in hand and moves forward cautiously avoiding the vines on the floor.

"Za-Bel', don't step on any o' tha vines..."

Fenn makes his way leading Zabela to the work benches where the stacks of books are... but keeps a cautious eye on the brightly colored bird.

"Za-bela, can you figure out from these hereh books who was experementing here and what they was doing? I don' need ta be mo wizard ta know tha' broken mirrior ain't natural and is powerful magic! Is tha' bird someone's familiar ya think?"

"Let's take a look. I'll cover you, if you want to check the wall." Dervick stands back and to one side of Bringor, bow trained on the odd spot in the wall.

From here I'm not sure that I can tell how long this particular goblin has been down here, you young ones can go a bit ahead while I get a better look. Dont go out of earshot...!
Take 10 on heal if allowed for 17 to inspect the goblin's body for cause/time of death

Zabela attempts to identify the vines, the bird, and the manner of magic being used for the mirror portal before perusing the books for their information.

Kn (Nature) Vines: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

Kn (Arcana) Mirror/Portal: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

Not sure if I should roll something for getting info from the books...


Jeseare:
The goblin has been dead for several days. You are fairly confident that it did, indeed, drink itself to death.

Zebela:
The vines are the same species as the ones that cover most of this floor. You remember reading something about this type of bird one time or the other. You do not know the name of the species, but you do know that it is far...far from home. You know that if this portal was not damaged that you'd be able to use it to travel through it to the jungle beyond. Finally, the books vary. One is a journal that, with a quick perusal, you see talks about what is beyond the portal, a great jungle. There are some sketches in the book. Plants, animals, and strange creatures cover some of the pages. Another book is a further treatise on potion making and in fact some of the bottles, you are fairly certain, contain different potions. The final book is a spell book (that contains all the 1st and 2nd level spells from the core rulebook).

Bringor begins investigating the strange masonry.

I want to take 10 on checking out the masonry, for a total Perception of 16 (17 for traps).


Bringor:
It's discolored and about the size of a piece of notebook paper.

Bringor:
With a little pressure, the stone spins revealing a small shelf. On the shelf is a bottle. It's not a wine bottle...but a brandy bottle. When you pick it up, you notice an anvil stamp on the bottles bottom.

Bringor grabs the bottle, and shows it to Dervick. "I think this is what we were in here for originally, or at least it's related somehow. Let's take it to Fenn." With that, Bringor heads towards the room where Fenn and Zabela are.

Fenn lets Zabela ponder the manuscripts.

"Just tell me what needs to be collected..."

Fenn leans his longsword against one of the benches, pulls his rope and grapple and tries to grapple the the piece of masonry resting int he center of the shattered mirror portal trying to move it so.. the mirror might be perhaps moved back into one piece.

He does not move from his position next to Zabella... and his longsword is easily in reach.

"We need to collect these potions, they may come in handy. And I've got myself a new spellbook!" She holds it up proudly. She removes her book from her pack and holds them both looking at them both longingly for a moment. She places the new book in her pack, and gingerly places her first one in the place of the new one.

She pauses a moment before analyzing the potions available.

"Uhm... begging yur pardon Za-bela.. but I'm kinda interested in learning magic as well... you might not want to be leaving your spellbook here for just practical reasons... it leaves an identity o' who was here last!"

Fenn looks around and nods, "As far as I'm concerned..we're not leaving anything here.. we're taking it all.. laboratory included! It make take us a day or two to fashion a large enough wagon from all the wood-work left available to us here in the house and surrounding woods.. but if we want ta be successful adventures.. I'm not planning on abandoning any resource we find... its all treasure! This here lab looks real delicate like and expensive.. tha's money just waiting ta be packed up and sold as far as I'm concerned!"

"Right," Zabela answers Fenn. She then hands over her book to him, "You should have this, it'll at least give you a good starting point in your studies." You can see the available spells in Zabela's profile.

Fenns eyes widen at the honor she just bestowed upon him, "Uh.. wow.. Miss Bela'.. thanks! Ah.. can read elvish a bit... but Ah'm a little rusty~ I might need some pointers an all."

Fenn begins collecting the bottles or potions Zabela indicated should be collected...

"Er.. can you determine with you magical senses and spell-lore if tha' mirror can be repaired or tha' portal be moved? Ah'd hate ta' leave such a seeming hazard behind un-resolved like. Plus, them plants on tha' otherside don' belong here .. stuff not part o' this area could come through and cause trouble for the animals and plants already here.. we should stop that... if'n we can!"


Zebela:
With the books on potions that you have, it would take you around an hour to figure out what the (6) bottles that contain, what you figure out to be potions. 2 bottles of Cure Light Wounds: Cures 1d8 damage + 3. 1 bottle of Endure Elements: Exist comfortably in hot or cold regions. 1 bottle of Lighten Object: Halve the weight of one object for 3 min. Size of the object is limited to 1 cubic foot per level (lvl.3). 1 bottle of Read Weather: Precisely forecast natural weather phenomenon that will occur in your area over the next 48 hours. And 1 bottle of Remove Sickness: Suppress disease, nausea, and the sickened condition.

The rest of the bottles contain basic ingredients for making potions. All said and done, probably worth 50 gold.

Fenn:
You do not have the adequate equipment to properly transport the entirety of the lab equipment without damaging it.

Are you saying the chemical supplies would be lost or that the physical equipment would be broken? Cause physical breaks are NOT an issue ... we have a wizard with us. As for the chemical compounds, there are a lot of empty wine bottles in that wine cellar.. we could easily transfer the chemicals then pack them in wooden cases from the wine cellar for transport. YES. It will take us a bit of time to fashion a large enough wagon to carry it all.. from the bits of wood and doors here in the house. We might even need to fell a tree to get the lumber we'd need.. but Fenn is a country boy and taking time to fashion needed woodwork is part of being an outdoorsman. It make take three or four days... but the rewards are WELL worth it! Plus, CRAFT is an untrained skill.. anyone can try to make anything... it might not be pretty and it might not last long.. but all it needs to be is suitable to get our loot back to town.. then we sell the lumber to a carpenter.


That is fine, but to be clear...you're going to spend 3 to 4, possibly more, days to try to whittle together a "wagon" to transport everything you can get your hands on and then spend, was it 3 days?, transporting it back to town? I just want to be clear.

Well, if the party does not want to spend that much time.. I of course will not force the issue.. but we are getting meager enough pay out of returning a singular bottle of booze. In my opinion taking back as much loot would be ideal. We need loot to pay to upgrade any of our gear especially warriors! Plus that would give time for random encounters.. sometimes the journey IS the reward! We'll all just come back hopefully 2nd level or maybe even closer to third level! I don't believe the mission was given any time constraints, was it??


Nope. Just wanted to make sure what was happening. :)

I know I read about someone trying to grapple it with their rope or something, but I can't remember who, or what came of that.

I don't mean to call anyone's magicking capabilities into question but perhaps isn't this the kind of thing the local wizards guild or constable should be notified about? Perhaps someone back in town has a better idea what this guy was up to here. Even if they can't offer guidance they have a right to know what was happening in their own back yard, so to speak.

Fenn pauses in his efforts to move the rock int he center of the shattered mirror to answer Jeseare, "Well I had every intention of handing it over to the Circle of Nine in New Wesel... hopefully for a significant... 'finder's fee', as it were; but we gotta figure out how ta move it first."


With enough time and help from others in the party, you would be able to remove the stone.

Zabela claps excitedly when the rock falls hard off the pedestal and the shards of the mirror are all exposed. "This is the spell combo that won me the Adept Competition at the Academy!" Zabela proceeds to use both hands and a great deal of concentration to use Mage Hand and Mending to attempt to fuse the pieces of the mirror two shards at a time.

Mending HP: 1d4 ⇒ 21d4 ⇒ 21d4 ⇒ 3

the shards may get too big for her abilities, but she tries anyway.

The mirror shards are definitely magical... and mage hand won't lift magical objects.


As Zebela works, it does not take her long to realize that all the pieces do not appear to be here. The rock falling onto the mirror must have crushed some of the pieces to "dust".

Turning to Bringor and Dervik, "Brin', Vick... go upstairs to check on our prisoners... we've been away from them long enough. Ah don't perceive anymore obvious threats down heah. Now we need ta' secure them for tha' time we'll need to prepare a wagon ta' leave. Ah and tha' good father Jese... will stay and help Bela'. Walk tha' perimeter and see if'n there are any new goblin forces gathering as well. I'll be up in 'bout 10 minute ta' help as well! Remembah.. those prisoners mean bounty gold.. so we want them alive!"

"Ugh! That's frustrating," Bela says with a slight hint of what someone who's never been angry might call anger, she looks up from her work to address Fenn, "It's not all here, some of it must've been destroyed. What do you want to do?"

Fenn leaves the laboratory to Zabela, and goes to have a closer look at the wineceller.

Do I have to roll more mendings? Or can we just say that Zabela gets as many pieces as possible together, and mends what she can?


With enough time, you are able to mend portions of the portal. When it is removed from the floor, it stops even partially functioning and the mirror is, again, just a mirror.

Zabela brings a piece of the mirror into the wine cellar, " Here's something odd...When I pick up the mirror, it's no longer a portal; if we're worried about it being dangerous, perhaps we should simply move it elsewhere? Maybe it's the room that's magic, and the mirror's just the conduit."

"Why don't you detect for magic on it now? Ah'm betting... if you set it down again.. tha' portal will reappear.. it just goes dormant when its not anchored to the ground or in motion... "

Catalogue the wine cellar? Well, I suppose I could be convinced.

Rummages around for some scrap paper to write on, right before he leaves turns around and comes back to lean in and say to Zabela

Should I happen to fine something nice enough for us, but not nice enough to be worth taking back... you want to share? Sometimes it helps me think.

Then takes 20 to thoroughly investigate the storage room for a Perception 24 paying special attention to fancy looking bottles, older dated bottles, and unopened bottles.

Zabela's eyebrows rise at Fenn, "Well look at you! You really have been studying your wizardry! Let's see..." She casts Detect Magic before and after putting the mirror shard on the ground.

Zabela blushes at Jeseare's proposal, "Oh I'm afraid it has the opposite effect for me, but thank you all the same!"

Dervick follows Bringor up the stairs, an arrow still nocked to his bow.


Bringor and Bosk:
You make your way upstairs to find the prisoners gone. If you walk outside, you see a small pile of rope lying at the base of a tree.

Zebela:
Casting detect magic causes the shards to glow as well as some of the dust lying around on the floor and under the rock that had been pulled from the portal. The ground under the portal glows also.

Jeseare and Fenn:
Other than the bottle you were sent to get, you have no idea what, if anything else, could be of value.

When Bringor sees the pile of rope, he says to Bosk, "We've got to hurry back down to Fenn and the others. We may have company soon."
