I still need actions: Who are you moving to attack or what square are you moving to?
Selena: I have you, you're fine.
I've been horrible about responding to your Character advancement spoilers, you have my apologies.
Regarding the "Mage Playing Bard" post a bit earlier, I don't mind if that's where you want to go with it, but I'm not necessarily sure it's necessary, and I certainly don't have the rules for it. I do have a player who would be interested in picking up Fyird if I want to bring Fyird back into the party...I'm still on the fence with that. For the moment, I think I want to see how the party does with 6 (without the bard) and we'll move forward from there.
Regarding Selena's development, if that's the route you want to take her, I don't have an objection to it, but don't feel like you need to shift that way just because a bard isn't in the party.
Dirk Deathtalon
Dirk surveys the dire situation as he nods at Selena's suggestion. "I'll take out the Lieutenant on his right, then try to subdue him if possible. Lash and Mird can you two keep the other Lieutenants busy?"
Gesturing at the right-hand door, "Thantos, do you have any tricks left that might keep that door closed for a few more minutes?"
Drawing his sword, Dirk moves off and into the fray.
Dirk will move to C4 and attack HGU3
Over-hand Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Damage: 2d6 + 8 ⇒ (1, 3) + 8 = 12
Thantos Mortimur
Thantos shouts at the group and their orc allies over the cacophony of the imminent battle ahead and the occupants of the rooms smashing into doors, "I'm blocking the doors!"
Then looking directly at the orcs he shouts "Hold them 'til the last second then get behind me when I start the spell. Attack the hobgoblins!"
Thantos dashes forward, turns and readies himself to use his magical ring to fill the area in front of the doors with sticky webbing, waiting for the party and most or hopefully all of the orcs to be out of the way.
Let me know if there are any problems here: I'm hoping no one minds if I change my action since Thantos is the last party member to act and not everyone ahead of him had acted yet and all he did was move.
Also, I'm assuming not everyone would have had a chance to move out of the way since Thantos is pretty much last; Thantos would hold his spell until everyone was moving or looked ready to move out of the way, so possibly round 2.
Thantos intends to anchor the web from the north edge of the east doors to the north edge of the west door to basically fill the squares A1-A4 and B1-B3 with webbing (but maybe only half of A4 and B3). The web would become difficult terrain and I'm hoping also make it harder to get the doors open if the stuff blocking the doors and the doors themselves are covered in sticky web tendrils.
Illydth-DM
A very creative use of the web spell Thantos, that's certainly allowed and should have the effect you're looking for. Consider your action changed.
Post will be in late tonight, say around midnight or so. Sorry for the extended timeframes on the posts of late, I'll try to get back to my normal schedule in short order.

Mird is caught up with work, so I'll go ahead and take a first action for him.
Seeing the battle before him and the limited space to work within, Mird shoulders his bow and draws out his hammer, striding up into B8 to engage HG1.
Mird Attack HG1: Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19 Damage: 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (6, 4) + 1 = 11
Meanwhile O5, seeing Mird engage HG1 shifts left and steps into A8, dropping the halbard and drawing a shortsword, it steps into the attack.
O5 Attack on HG2: Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15, Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
O6, seeing an opening and the glory awaiting him, drops his Halbard and also pulls a shortsword, rushing the Hobgoblin Leader, shouting orcish curses all the way.
O6 Attack on HG-L: Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8, Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
O1, O2, O3, and O4, seeing Thantos start to chant dash for cover behind the mage: O1 ends up at B5, O2 ends up at A5, O3 at C3 and O4 at C4. None of these orcs seem prepared to step into battle...looking closer at them, they seem to be wearing cooks aprons.
Illydth-DM
Hobgoblin Leader awaits the approach of O6 and counterstrikes with his greatsword.
Attack O6: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15, Damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 1) + 3 = 8
HG2 Takes a swipe at O5 as he steps into range.
Attack O5: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4, Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
HGU-2 Staggered from Armand's Fire Bolt takes a swing at Armand with his Longsword.
Attack Armand: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21, Damage:1d8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Confirm Threat: 1d20 ⇒ 15, Additional Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
HGU-3 sidesteps Dirk's overhand chop and counters with a thrust.
Attack Dirk: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3, Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
HGU-1 takes Lash's Rapier strike and shrieks out his pain as he slashes at Lash's head.
Attack Lash: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7, Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
HG1 Takes Mird's blow to the shoulder, a loud crack signifying a bone snapping in two, as it attempts a poke ahead with it's shortsword.
Attack Mird: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5, Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Illydth-DM
Rushing ahead to attack HGU3 to get at the Hobgoblin Leader, Dirk takes an overhead swipe at one of the hobgoblins, trying for a quick and clean kill to continue his momentum toward the leader.
The hobgoblin, ready for the attack, brings his blade up to block the blow, assuming his parry will be easy. It didn't account for the size of Dirk, or the size of his blade however. The parry is turned wrong and brings the flat of it's inferior blade into contact with the edge of Dirks, a ringing crash and shriek and all of a sudden the Hobgoblin's longsword has turned into a dagger, roughly sundered about 2 feet up from the hilt.
Seeing one of the two orcs heading straight for him, HG2 awaits his opportunity and strikes before the orc with the halbard has had time to draw his shorter weapon. Unfortunately, between the falling halbard and the Orc's angle of approach, there is no good strike that HG2 can make on O5.
Mird strides forward, determined not to be left in the background of this fight. Seeing the combatants closing with each other and realizing there won't be much room to shoot, he draws his earthbreaker and shoulders his bow, stepping up and into the swing on HG1...his aim true, the hammer slams down onto the left shoulder of the hobgoblin, shattering his shoulder and left arm socket, and practically sending the hobgoblin staggering to it's knees.
Armand strides forward watching the battle. Seeing a hobgoblin leutenant (HGU2) start to move to flank Dirk, Armand smiles grimly as that hobgoblin unkowningly volunteers for his punnishment. A fast prayer to Saenrae while he's striding into battle and a bolt of flame flashes forth from his hand to strike the hobgoblin as Armand draws his mace and steps up to engage the Leutenant at point blank range.
HG-L one of the two Halbard wielding orcs heading his way the Hobgoblin leader smiles and raises his greatsword in a salute at the oncoming orc, grinning evilly and awaiting the creature's attack.
Meanwhile, Armand's Target, HGU2, recovers from the burn of Armand's flaming bolt and takes a swipe with his longsword at Armand, catching Armand's shield a solid blow that all but knocks the shield wide, his backhand stroke gouges into a plate and screeches off the underlying chain mail of his breastplate (Armand takes 4 Damage from the Strike).
With a war cry, O6 draws a shortsword and steps into a thrust at the Hobgoblin Leader, hoping to catch him unprepared. Unfortunately the leader sweeps his greatsword down in a short arc, the power and weight of the large blade sweeping the smaller blade out of the Orc's hands and to the floor. The return strike takes the head from the Orc's shoulders as O6 falls headless to the ground.
Staying within O6's bulk most of the way to her target and between )6 and HGU1, as O6 peals off toward the Hobgoblin leader and his own death, Lash makes a last sprint at the thoroughly unaware HGU1, leaping and thrusting with her rapier, she takes the hobgoblin through the left hip with her strike.
The attempt at a return strike fails uterly as HGU1 tries to slash out at Lash's head while disengaging himself from the impaling rapier.
Thantos steps a few feet north, turns, and starts chanting a short chant. The orcs at the doors, seeing a mage in their midst and understanding what raised hands and chanting means, scramble to get behind the mage as he triggers his web spell. Strand after sticky strand encompass the short hallway and area between buildings, completely covering the doors and hall. No more than a couple seconds after the orcs leave their hold on the doors, one of the bracing planks snaps and the northwestern door starts to budge open...only to get completely stuck closed by the webs.
A feeble poke ahead with it's shortsword with it's good right arm as it tries to recover itself from the pain of it's shattered left is the best poor HG1 can do as it steps back and tries to disengage from Mird.
Finally getting into place, O5 takes a stab at his opponent (HG2) but only manages to create more noise as HG2's blade easily parries O5's own.
Round 2 actions and Rolls in please.
Selena Devanholme
I just looked it up and you are completely right Selena, thanks. So I have to make an attack roll with my +1 range bonus but minus something for Dirk being in the way? I'm not sure how ranged touch attacks work.
Yes, it is a -4 penalty for shooting into melee, which you can avoid if you have the Precise Shot feat. (Usually a good choice for combat-oriented wizards) There is also a chance, if you miss, of hitting Dirk.
Where are the rest of our players? Real life must be hitting them hard this week.
Illydth
LOL Thantos, I think I saw Dirk escaping the country...:)
Yea, I know Mird has been pounded at work HARD this week according to Dirk and he's having a bit of a rough week also, so I'm not going to worry too much about it. We seem to "cycle" with this campaign, we go through slow times and it speeds up a bit. I think my absence for a couple days there with work and other stuff on my end is what probably slowed us down. Either way, we'll get back on track next week. I'll put out the call to have everyone get a post in for Monday night so we can really get down to business on this next week and try to get through the combat.
Till then, relax I guess. I may have a post up this weekend, but I have at least 1 system to re-build at my house (my home-brew PVR is down ATM), so I may not have the time. Either way, I'll talk to everyone on Monday. Have a relaxing weekend.
Illydth-DM
Thantos: To clarify. It does require a ranged touch attack. The -4 penalty is due to "cover". Typically I do not penalize people for "firing into melee" with the penalties already applied...I will assume that anyone with any knowledge of what they're doing isn't trying to snipe across a fighter's left shoulder...they're hedging their bets and shooting during major openings.
That said, I believe the way I manage this is: Any attack at a 1 or less (due to penalties) fired into melee has a chance of catching your teammate as one possible outcome, so it's up to you whether you want to pick a different target or continue firing, either way will work.
So assuming you have no bonus, a roll of 5 or less will indicate an attack so ill aimed that you have the potential of hitting a comrade. I'll make a hidden roll to determine whether or not your attack hits and then another "attack" roll to see if it's going to do damage. In this situation I may decide that your poorly aimed shot has a 30% chance of hitting Dirk. If you're within that 30% I'd roll again against his Armor Class to see if your shot penetrates (ranged touch AC). If that second roll hits, I'll roll damage and Dirk will be annoyed that you hit him. :)
If you wish to continue, give me a D20 roll with the bonus's / penalties applied. Note that "ranged touch" typically ignores armor, so you're not trying to hit a 17 - 20 as is standard with melee weapons, you're hitting, typically around a 14...the -4 penalty brings it up to somewhere around normal "to hit" levels...any bonus you have on ranged touch is just that...pure bonus.
Thantos Mortimur
Hmm, well I don't want to annoy Dirk since he has a big sword and Thantos has no armor. Can I change targets to HG-L since I have a clear shot at him? (I'm assuming the noncombatant orc right in front of me is not a problem since he could just duck or something.) Thanks for being patient with me on the rules I'm fuzzy on.

HGU-3 Stabs ahead at Dirk, trying to get in under his guard.
HGU-3 Attacks Dirk: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13, Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

HGU-1 Attacks Lash: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21 Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
HG1, left arm still hanging limp and beginning to turn a deep shade of purple grimices in pain as he lunges forward, again with his good right arm, attempting to pierce through Mird's defenses.
HG1 Attacks Mird: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12 Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Dirks overhead chop comes down hard at HGU3, battering his defense aside as the strike blasts through the hobgoblin's parry to drag a cut from shoulder to hip down the front of the Hob's leather armor, immediately blood starts pooling up on it's chest from various places where the blade sliced open skin. (HGU-3 Takes 17 damage).
In the corner, where HG2 faces off against O5, the two seem to be locked in a deadly dance of death, HG2 finds an opening and swipes at O5, but cannot seem to find a way to connect, O5 parries the blow soundly as the two of them go back to their parry and thrust maneuver, O5's opening a few seconds later meets the same fate as HG2 swings it's short sword up in a small arc, knocking O5's thrust off balance.
Mird steps forward the try to finish off HG1, already showing signs of having a fatal wound. He attempts to swipe his big earthbreaker in an under-and-up motion to catch the wounded hobgoblin off guard, but the big mace manages to swing past the hobgoblin, not connecting with anything but air.
Armand, closing with his hobgoblin lieutenant, steps forward and with a quick strike takes aim at the Hobgoblin's right arm, hoping to crush the bones and put a fast end to the battle. Surprised by the quick attack, the hobgoblin doesn't even try to get a block up in time, but turns the back of his armored shoulder toward Armand's strike, the armor bleeding off some of the damage he'd otherwise have taken. The hit is solid but damage is limited. (HGU2 takes 7 damage).
The Hobgoblin leader steps over the now cooling corpse of his defeated orc attacker toward Dirk, bringing his big blade up to try to take Dirk's head from his shoulders all in one stroke. Unfortunately, Dirk is more nimble than the big Hobgoblin thinks and manages to duck the swing will still maintaining his balance. Dirk then squares off to face both of the Hobgoblins.
Spinning out of his shoulder block stance, HGU2 lashes out at Armand with a backhand swipe but the longsword rings off against Armand's already in place shield.
Thinking Dirk distracted with his Leader's attack, HGU3 steps forward with an awkward stab with his longsword, obviously it's a maneuver the hobgoblin is not used to performing since the tip of the sword simply screeches off of Dirk's chest plate, not penetrating nor doing anything but adding another scratch to the already beaten up chest-plate.
In a fury Lash parries a thrust from HGU1 and lunges forward, putting her rapier right into the big Hobgoblin's stomach armor, a shriek of protest a sure sign that the lunge penetrated armor. (HGU1 takes 4 Damage from Lash's strike)
Lash's Lieutenant however, gets in a quick Return strike that Lash cannot parry. Twisting her body to accept some of the force of the blow, Lash takes a small cut across her upper shoulder, the tip of the longsword missing the left side of her neck by scant inches. (Lash takes 5 Damage).
A flash of light and a golden radiance cover the party as the now familiar feeling of power and surety come over the party (Bless Spell Active, +1 to Hit and Saves)
Seeing the new combatant on Dirk, Thantos switches his aim from HGU1 to the more clear Hobgoblin Leader. His pointed finger seems to grow a dart, hissing and dripping a green substance as it literally springs out of Thantos's hand and shoots off toward the leader of the hobgoblins. The dart embeds itself in the Hobgoblin's chest and a faint hiss can be heard as the acid eats through it's leather chest plate but doesn't quite start to eat through the goblin's skin (HG-L takes 5 Damage from the Acid Dart).
The hobgoblin with the severely broken arm tries to take advantage of Mird's off balance strike by poking ahead with it's short-sword, but Mird's armor does it's job and turns the blade aside.
Round 2 folks, rolls and actions in please! Major damage on HGU1 and H2 at this point, minor damage on a few others.

The crit rules are that you have to roll a natural (before bonus) crit number. A dagger that crits on 19-20 must have a natural 19 or 20 on the d20 roll to threaten. There's also an additional house rule I maintain that a natural 20 does not require a threat roll, it's an automatic critical. So your 19 above is, unfortunately, adjusted, meaning that you do not crit with it, which is VERY unfortunate since you nat 20'd the threat roll...maybe we'll do something spectacular with it afterall...:)

Dirk grins knowingly as HGU3 is obviously slowing down, making a fast feint at the thoroughly bleeding Hobgoblin it tries to bring it's blade down to block and cannot recover fast enough as Dirk flashes his blade up and back down, finishing the job he started last round as his great two handed sword cuts clean through the hobgoblin dropping it to the ground.
A short distance away from the now crumpled hobgoblin lieutenant, HG2 takes another swing at his Orc attacker (O5), trying to slip his longsword within his opponent's guard. The orc is too slow for the hobgoblin and pays the ultimate price for it's slowness...the hobgoblin's sword cuts a gash along the orc's abdomen, and sends the orc to the ground, mortally wounded. (7 Damage, The orc is not dead, but will continue to bleed out if not assisted.)
Seeing the orc next to him fall and an opening behind his friends for a flanking attack, Mird decides he's done with his opponent, twirling his hammer overhead, he brings it down in a nasty chop at his target's head. The blow connects and almost flattens the Hobgoblin's head on it's shoulders, knocking it off it's feet and down to the ground, a sickening "Crack" of shattering bone the death knell for his opponent. Spinning, Mird faces off with HG2 to keep it in place.
Armand Glances back over his shoulder at Dirk to ensure he's still surviving, seeing Dirk down to one opponent, Armand relaxes a bit and takes a fast step to his right, as Selena slides into place beside him. Surprisingly, the move seems to take the Hobgoblin Lieutenant off guard as it shifts to try to defend against both attackers. Taking advantage of the already wounded Goblin's distraction, Armand swings his mace in an uppercut, catching the hobgoblin below the chin and snapping it's neck back, another "crack" fills the air and it's head goes limp as the hobgoblin lieutenant falls to the ground, neck obviously broken.
Seeing it's bodyguard fall limp to the ground, the Hobgoblin Leader takes another swipe at Dirk's head, hoping to get in a lucky strike while Dirk is recovering from his swing at his expendable comrade. Unfortunately for the Hobgoblin, it miscalculates Dirk's immense strength and it's swipe at Dirk's head is easily picked off as Dirk stops his overhand chop and quickly reverses the chop of his two handed sword to blast the Hobgoblin's own strike out of line with a loud ring of metal on metal.
Both Lash and her opponent continue to square off against each other, neither finding an opening to exploit. Lash tries a fast flurry of strikes against her opponent, who just as quickly blocks one strike and backs off to dodge the others. His return strike is easy blocked by Lash as she settles back into her guard position.
Selena and Thantos, both of whom had their targets fall this round look around to see where their best actions might apply.
Round 3. Thantos/Selena: If there's something you'd like to do between the end of Round 2 and the Beginning of Round 3, please let me know, you didn't get to attack since Armand took out your target so you do have an action you can take if you wish.
