Hugging the railing, Flo bolts around to the other side of Guiness. "Get him good!" she encourages the Dwarf, showering him with butterflies.

Luck on Guiness!

Waiting on my initiative, but I will move Guiness at least through the door since he made the strength check.
Kellek Zaderan |
Guiness busts through the closed side of the double doors with relative ease, and it becomes immediately clear to the "mill worker" what's going on here. He goes to shout when Kellek's spell lands... and stutters once before yelling out "Half-dozen intruders! All hands!" (Resisted the spell :( ) He stuffs one hand into the pocket of his overalls and withdraws a long razor.
"Well, now you've done it." Kellek glowers at the man while pulling his mithril knife.

"The do-gooders! They've here!" Aldern Kargas cries, drawing his falchion and stepping closer to the first mill-worker on the stairs. Outside on the lower level, there doesn't seem to be any response yet from anyone still inside the building. The door remains closed.
The yellow mill worker dons a loose mask he had been hiding in his sleeve. The leathery face covering looks as though its been stitched from a patchwork of mismatched skin. As soon as its on, his stance changes entirely, and he breathes out steadily. He lunges a slash at Guiness, but the dwarf's armor is too rugged and he's not able to score a hit.

As Colvyn and Flo deliver magical enhancement, the mill worker turns to retaliate against Guiness with an irritated hiss. He raises a hand to his mask and a duplicate of himself flickers into existence. The two mill workers mirror each others movements exactly and sidestep through each other before delivering slashes at Guiness. Kargas waits with a predator's calm on the middle landing--either the enemy upstairs will come to him, or his allies will finish off the foe below and rejoin him. Either way works for him.
Delay, if anyone comes down the stairs or otherwise attacks I'd like to pop back into initiative.
GM Cellion |
Although Flo's dagger fails to even shatter an image, Guiness' divinely blessed attacks do that and more. Two weighty strikes of Dragonfist are enough to crush bone and mortally injure the "mill worker". He drops with a low groan.
Out of Combat (for now)
There's the sound of people moving about upstairs, but no one approaches the stairs Kargas is on over the next 15 or so seconds. It's not clear what they might be doing, but there's enough creaking floorboards for at least half a dozen individuals.
Floredana Mandulescu |
Flo waves at Kellek and Guiness to head up the stairs. She stabilizes the two workers while she lets her allies pass. "Even the worker down there did some creepy cult stuff. I think we need to just go in ready for fighting at this point. Let's form up and go!" she suggests in a whisper.
________
If she can, stabilize on the two cultists (Flo figures that the more people we can have arrested, the better chance we'll have at being legally unscathed by all of this). Flo would like to start whatever trouble we're about to cause with a wand in one hand and her dagger in the other! If we get a surprise round, she'll start it with bless.
Brother_Guiness |
Guiness comments to Floredana while she is stabilizing the masked worker, ”We should get that mask off him as well, Floredana, it seems to have given him some magical abilities and may be another clue.”
Shedding the pretense of Pharasman monk, Guiness returns to his normal appearance and moves up to Kargas with shield and hammer at the ready.
Kellek Zaderan |
Kellek heads up stairs.
So the door we came in is the only door into this level of the mill and any millers below will have to come through it correct?
GM Cellion |
Working quickly, Flo is able to stabilize both "mill workers" while Guiness removes the mask from the one that managed to don his. The mask is just as much of a macabre affair as it looked like from a distance - a sown-together patchwork of skin with rough holes for eyes.
As you work, the movement upstairs quiets. Whatever they were doing, they're not it doing anymore. It seems they're waiting for you to make the first move.
You got it Kellek. One door into the ground level of the mill is the one you used.

"Sounds like they may have been trying to set up cover up there to try and pick us off as we go into the room...That or barricade the door. I can't really tell for sure," guesses Guiness. Looking to Kargas, he asks, "So, how you want to do this? Should I go in shield first or should we use your special sword to make an alternate entryway?"
Floredana Mandulescu |
"I think the sword might take a little longer than the door and they'd be able to respond. I say we rush the door, shield first, with Kargas close behind. Kellek and I will support from the rear?" Flo suggests, looking at Kellek.

"I think the sword might take a little longer than the door and they'd be able to respond. I say we rush the door, shield first, with Kargas close behind. Kellek and I will support from the rear?" Flo suggests, looking at Kellek.
"Alas, I'll probably have to spend some time concentrating upon the our overall rear." says the wizard nodding downstairs toward the door. "Remember, we had been planning for a prison break and and escape. Nearly all of my prepared magic is aimed at those goals today."
Basically, he is covering the entrance door, waiting for Colvyn and whatever things might be chasing him.
Brother_Guiness |
"Sounds good to me," responds Guiness to Floredana. He moves to the upstairs door and holds his shield at the ready. With his hammer hung at his belt, he prepares to quickly open the door with his free hand and rush into the room with his shield leading the way. Once the others are ready, he looks to Kargas and counts down silently, mouthing "Three...two...one...go", then opens the door quickly and forcefully, moving into the room quickly if he can.
Kargas Stormscar |
"A fine shot, Colvyn," Kargas gives the warpriest a nod, before following Guiness back up the stairs. "Let's clear them out!"
GM Cellion |
Outside, Colvyn's arrow expertly pierces the raven as it flies. The arrow not only kills it instantly, but imparts a spin to its fall that sends it tumbling down to the ground on the island (rather than the bird dropping into the water). The dead bird lies a couple hundred feet away to the north.
Inside, Guiness slams open the door on the second floor to reveal a large storeroom. This place is filled with stacks of timber, firewood, and other finished lumber products waiting for shipment. A network of pulleys on tracks covers the ceiling, ropes dangling here and there to aid in the shifting of inventory as needed. Two chutes on the western wall fitted with winches allow lumber to be hauled up and down to the river below. Four openings in the ceiling lead to the upper floor (green squares on map); chutes extend through each of these from log splitters in the room above. Under each opening is a collection bin.
There doesn't appear to be anyone in this room at first glance, but there are ample places to hide among the lumber. The whirring of saws from the log splitters above make it difficult to hear much.

"Be careful, Floredana," Guiness says, just loud enough to be heard over the machinery, "I've got your back."

GM Cellion |
Of course there's another floor above! There's even a staircase on your floor marked "UP"!
A slash of Flo's dagger and a couple of solid blows of Dragonfist prove too much for the last cultist. The man's back audibly cracks as he falls to the ground. He groans as his consciousness leaves him.
Combat over!
Back outside, Colvyn is able to reach the downed raven in relatively short time. The dead messenger bird has a tiny scroll strapped around its leg. When you open the scroll, you see a brief message written is a neat and tiny script 'The interlopers have found me my love. I will handle them for you.'
Inside, the building continues to rumble, but there is no more noise coming from upstairs. Perhaps this was all of the cultists...?
