GM RelicBlackOUT |

Welcome! I was recently digging through boxes a year after we moved and I unearthed 4 modules that I would love to run for 5 players. The first is a good lead into the final three, which are tied together in a larger storyline. We will be beginning with the module “Scourge of the Howling Horde.”
The cut off for applications will end Monday April 23rd by noon central time. This will give interested parties two weeks to full flesh out their characters.
What I expect from myself is a minimum of one post a day. I would also expect this from you. If you are not able to keep this commitment, maybe this one is not for you. I do realize that real life does happen and will make exceptions, but please personally PM me or let the group know via the discussion page.
Not that this needs to be stated, but I expect that everyone will be kind and courteous to one another. This should be a place where we can all just relax and have fun, its what games are for correct?
What I like to see on your character sheet is your background. You are, after all, NOT a level 1 commoner. How did you become a fighter, where did that training come from? From what sect did your druid come from, and who was her elder? Where and when did your cleric receive his call to follow Sarenrae?
What makes your character tick, what drives him/her?
Do they have any vices/phobias/quirks? What do they like and dislike?
Three words that describes their personality.
I would also like a physical description of the character. This way each of us can have an idea of what the others look like in our theaters of the mind.
Because these are some old school modules I want to kick it old school and go Core Only: If it is not in the core players guide then it does not exist. Spells, feats, equipment, etc. This also means no traits. Core classes and races only.
15 Point Buy: I do allow people to sack stats, but please play your character according to their stats.
Starting Gold: Max class gold at 1st level. I play by the rule of if it is not on your character sheet, then you do not have it. Before starting I give everyone a double check to make sure they are fully ready to start.
HP: Max HP at first, roll for HP every level beyond that. I do allow people to re-roll the 1st natural once per level, but if you get two in a row then it was destined to be.
I do keep in mind aging effect, if you would like to play an middle aged or old character, more power to you! But please add in those bonuses/penalties
I do allow any alignment except evil for obvious reasons.
Favorite Class Features: I allow the extra hit point, skill, or racial features for the favorite class.
Initiative: When we come to combat I will roll everyones initiative publicly and keep an active tracker. If two PCs go, then a bugbear, then the three remaining PCs, I will have the first two act in tandem so they don’t need to wait for the other, then the bugbear, then the final three can go all at once. If there is someone who is lagging behind, I will take authority to do the most likely action for that player. This will only be in cases lasting longer than a day.
Mapping the Battlefield: I will do my best to describe the scene and actions, but unless players absolutely need something drawn out I will not be mapping it out. During combat I would love people to be descriptive of what actions they are taking. Don’t just give me an attack roll and damage roll and say your character swings his/her sword.
Skill Checks: There will be some skill checks that I will be rolling separate on the side. Things like passive perception checks for hidden things, sense motive checks, some diplomacy/intimidate/bluff checks. When it comes to social skills there are two deciding factors for me as a DM, how it is roleplayed and how the roll plays out. I am not going to penalize a player for rolling a 1 diplomacy check when they knocked it out of the park, but I am also not going to penalize the player who isn’t the most eloquent with words (me) when they rolled a natural 20 on diplomacy.
Spoiler Boxes: Not that this needs to be said, but when I put a spoiler box please resist reading it unless you make the DC that is stated, have the language that is being spoken, or are the person it is written for.
You are part of a group of mercenaries answering a call for help from the hamlet of Barrow’s Edge. They has recently become the target of a goblinoid tribe called the Howling Horde. They have been attacking outlining farms, harassing travels, and have even made raid attempts into the hamlet itself.
You and your cohorts have answered the call to help investigate this tribe and help free them from their relentless assaults.
Thanks for taking a look and lets have some fun.

@Placeholder of Doom I do believe the original modules take place in Greyhawk but they don’t specifically say. We will eventaully be going to some specific Forgotten Realm locations, but to start I will say a mixed bag of other for the setting.
I have converted them over to the Pathfinder rules, so for deity sake we will be using Pathfinder’s core deities.
@JoshB Who doesn’t like come old school wizardry?

Colt R. Warwick |

A core only classic game? Hmmmm... tempting. I'm thinking a good ol'
fighter, but torn between a net and trident gladiator, or a maneuver specializing duelist. (I technically could prestige into duelist with both of those concepts, actually...)
Out of curiosity, what are the other modules you have in mind? Interested to know what lies ahead in the longer run.

GM RelicBlackOUT |

@Colt R. Warwick Love it! I don’t want to take any wind out of your sails if you were thinking it, but the Gladiator archetype won’t be available. If you were just talking conceptually then lets do it!
Oh I don’t want to give away everything, but we might be somewhere that it is dark down under....
@Comp0sMentis I took a look at Yondalla and looked up the Pathfinder core deities. Here is what I found Domain wise that lined up. Unfortunately the racial deities aren’t core...
Iomedae & Erastil: Good, Law
Shelyn: Good, Protection
Torag: Good. Law, Protection

Oh no, it would absolutely be for flavor. Just just happens to carry a trident and net... and whatever other gladiatorial weapons I can find.

Got it. We're going to Australia during an eclipse.

Grungar Brogrinslag |

Placeholder of Doom here :) Here is the crunch for a Dwarf Druid - I am borrowing the flavor, but not the crunch, from the Slagchild alternate Dwarf trait, so he is an exile who had to append "slag" to his family name. I believe everything is core.
I am still ironing out the kinks in his background, but basically he is a crusty foul smelling vagrant who wanders around with his pet bear, Brunt, living off the land and making a few coin as a healer and mercenary when the mood takes him. More or less a hermit through fate rather than choice after he was expelled from dwarven lands for "killing" his sister Sekka; they were trying to help an injured bear, Brunt's great grandmother, but she attacked and slew Sekka.

Robert Henry |

hhhmmm, core...
I've got a dwarf paladin that has the "Stonelord" archetype, let me lose the archetype and change a few things on the crunch and fluff and get back with you :-)
Is there a dwarven community near 'the hamlet of Barrow’s Edge' that could be used in a backstory?

GM RelicBlackOUT |

@Grungar Brogrinslag Looks good. Only question I have is under Brunt’s equipment it says 150GP. Just wanted to check in on where that came from.
@Robert Henry Brunner looks good. It does looks like you are missing a feat. As far as a Dwarven community nearby, I really like your backstory coming from the Mindspin Mountains. Barrow’s Edge does have a small population of dwarfs, but no other major specific Dwarven communities.

Grungar Broginslag - Dwarven Druid
Brunner Hammefell - Dwarven Paladin of Torag

Yeah, I hadn't decided if I wanted to go offense with power attack, or defense with toughness, yet.
I will alter the backstory to include trade with the dwarfs in Barrow's Edge and post him here in the recruitment thread when I am done.

GM RelicBlackOUT |

Robert Henry Both are equally great choices. If you do trade with the dwarfs within Barrow’s Edge I will add for you a contact point to help with any backstory.
Arvel is a prominent figure within the hamlet. His influence with traders has helped keep the hamlet supplied with anything they cannot make or grow. His influence comes from his wealth as a money lender.

GM RelicBlackOUT |

@Colt R. Warwick Looks good! Also, to get you prepped say this out loud. “Rise Up Lights.” The more you say it the more it seems like you are saying razor blades with an Australian accent. You’re welcome!

Andostre |

Hi there! I'm submitting an elf cleric of Desna! He's a complete slacker, but hits with is bow more often than not.
Additionally, I want to add that having GMed PbP campaigns (although not on Paizo boards) and having played in various campaigns on the Paizo boards, I am familiar with the routine and I understand the importance of keeping posting momentum going, and I understand it's the responsibility of both the GM and the players.
I've been playing since 1st edition D&D (barely), GMing since 2nd edition, and have been involved in a number of related, continuous PbPs since... dang, since 2006. Those aren't on this board, but I am involved in a fair amount of other PbPs on this board. I'm pretty laid back about the rules as a player, and I enjoy playing flawed characters that aren't supposed to be taken too seriously.
Let me know if there are any questions, and good luck to everyone!

GM RelicBlackOUT |

@Grungar sounds good, just change it to the balance of what would remain after your starting gear. But it looks good! Many moons ago my gaming group was playing in a 3.5 Ebberon game and one of them was a Dwarven druid with a bear animal companion. Many fond and fun memories in that campaign.
@Andostre Lanliss Endarro Looks great! He will be the first PC I’ve ever DMed or played with that used a Starknife.
Applicants
Grungar Broginslag - Dwarven Druid
Brunner Hammefell - Dwarven Paladin of Torag
Colt R. Warwick - Human Dueling Fighter
Lanliss Endarro - Elven Cleric of Desna

GM RelicBlackOUT |

@Scarlet Blood I was curious when we were going to be getting our skill character. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be a rogue or a bard. Everything looks great, I enjoyed the backstory. It must be no surprise that Scarlet could be finding himself in the company with older male cohorts.
Applicants
Grungar Broginslag - Dwarven Druid
Brunner Hammefell - Dwarven Paladin of Torag
Colt R. Warwick - Human Dueling Fighter
Lanliss Endarro - Elven Cleric of Desna
Scarlet Blood - Human Rogue

Grungar Brogrinslag |

Okay, Grungar should be complete, now with added background, and a far less affluent animal companion :)
I really wish Everton had lasted longer, it was a really characterful setting. My first character was a bard-barian, who only raged when you marred his looks, in an Eberron adventure, fond memories :)

Scarlet Blood |

I've always enjoyed playing rogues, so that was my first idea for this character. Bards can be fun, but I'm not the most charming fellow so they are usually further down on my choices of characters.
Yeah. I had noticed that the other characters were older males after I typed up my background and thought that would be possibly 'mentor' like for him.

GM RelicBlackOUT |

@Andostre Oh my, a thousand apologies. I have misspoken. Make that TWO Star Knifes! Lol.
@Scarlet Blood I enjoy playing rogues also. They get a bad wrap with all of the very “Shiny Classes” that are out there. And the possibility of a mentor could pull together come cool RP scenarios. I am enjoying what everyone has been bringing to the table.
@Grungar I knew what you were meaning. I stopped using my phone to reply on here because of how butchered it would make the text. I mean think of all the crazy names, deities, weapons, etc that aren’t exactly “real words.”
@Buckshot Bob Heck yeah, submit a character. The more the merrier. It only makes my job harder to decided on the final 5.... *sad panda* BUT I will say with a name like Buckshot Bob, I slightly regret making this core only, with a name like that I’d expect a shotgun wielding gunslinger. Just post it on here and I’ll check it out.

Grungar Broginslag - Dwarven Druid

Colt R. Warwick - Human Dueling Fighter

Scarlet Blood - Human Rogue

GM RelicBlackOUT |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

@Dalron Northfield Hey don’t sweat it, the little format things are really easy to pick up on. So for me the “How to format your text” button doesn’t work, so I’ll type out all the ones I know.
Bold {b}Text Here {/b}
Italicized {i}Text Here {/i}
Faint blue text for out of character talk {ooc} Text Here {/ooc}
Dice rolls {dice=Attack Roll} 1d20+4 {/dice}
Attack Roll: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
A spoiler box like this {spoiler=Text Here} secret message {/spoiler}
Making text smaller {smaller} Text Here {/smaller}
That is all I know off the top of my head. Hope it helps.

GM RelicBlackOUT |

@Andostre I would have started it sooner, like this up coming week, but next week I have four days that are going to be crazy at work and I did not want to cause a lag in our gaming so I pushed it off for my sake.
@Dalron Not a problem! If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask.
@Elias & @Silbr Looks good!

@Barnabus
10 13 14 15 12 9 (after racial) is only using 13 of your 15 points. Also, you said you were middle age which would have a -1 physicals and a +1 mental bonus. Take a look over your stats again and adjust as you need.
Like I said other than that, everything looks great!
@Grungar Looks good and adding more depth is always a bonus.
