Mr. Whiskers nods an affirmative when Einar asks him about what the pelt is called.

"I think it only works once though...but chosen well that one time may be all we need."

The rwst of the day passes uneventfully and the party camps for the night. "Einar, I heard you made very good Borscht. I wasn't feeling like eating the last time. Would you mind doing the cooking tonight?" Nadya asks."I miss Orm and Morjoli. But they'll be safer in Ellsprin. I just hope they won't grow up prejudiced to humans." She gives a wistful sigh.

Feel free to retcon your response.

The night passes uneventfully. The party continues on their journey.A small river cuts across the path, heading south toward the cliffs that overlook Glacier Lake. A stone bridge crosses the river, seemingly constructed with horse, wagon, and caravan traffic in mind. The bridge is well maintained, and the snow has been cleared from its span. Four-foot-high stone railings run along both sides of the bridge, topped at either end by iron spikes upon which clean and meticulously polished skulls have been carefully impaled and turned as if to observe the traffic. A white-painted signpost greets travelers approaching from the east.

The signpost reads, "All foreign merchants headed to Whitethrone are required to have licenses to do business in the city and that they may be subject, even with a license to inspection without cause.A license may be applied for at the city gates. - By the order of the Queen"

The river is 15 feet wide and 15 feet deep here, making it difficult to ford. DC 15 swim check to cross.

A pale green giant with scaled skin and large, webbed hands and feet and slotted gills on either side of its neck blocks the party from crossing the bridge.

"Papers please!" It demands in broken common.

Mr Whiskers knowledge local: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25

Mr Whiskers recognise it as a Freshwater merrow

The party also notes 2 more green shapes lurking in the water.

Something also isn't quite right. Weren't inspections and licenses only required in White Throne itself? Or are some merrows trying to be opportunists...

Nadya conversation

"Well they seemed like decent boys." Mr. Whiskers consoles her. "They saw us work together, surely that will help counteract any prejudice they encounter." Smiling, he assures her "I think their experiences and what you have taught them should stand them in good steed."

Yes, he believes that.

Bridge

Seeing the bridge in the distance with someone standing at it, Mr. Whiskers casts Mage Armor on himself using his runestone to power the spell.

Once up at the bridge, Mr. Whiskers stammers out "Aren't you...um...supposed to give us the papers? Err...We should probably be inspecting..." He looks at the sign. "Be inspecting anything you have."

Bluff: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8 Could have been a much smoother delivery...updated what I said based on the poor roll.

"No papers?! You pay bridge tax! Medium animal," It looks at Geist,"Or you! You look good to eat!" They look at Mr Whiskers.

'I knew one good dead wouldn't go unpunished.' Einar shrugs his shoulders, "If you want me to cook I can, but it wouldn't hurt if we all take turns after this. That's what raiding parties would do, each night a different person was responsible for the pot." So Einar begis pulling out different ingredients to make a venison stew.

'It tastes like the venison may have spoiled, I had forgotten about that thaw we passed through earlier. A shame we didn't harvest that elk so we could have fresh meat.' Tasting the stew, as he is cooking, Einar quickly adds more salt.

at the bridge

Standing on the bridge beside Mister Whiskers, Einar pushes the hood of his cloak back enough so his face could be seen, looking the green guard in the eyes. "Do I look or sound like a foreign merchant to you? This is not a city gate and you are not here representing the queen so we do not need to produce papers or money. Either get out of the way or have your two friends come out of hiding so we can get this over with."

"Calm down, big guy." The merrow hunches over, trying to appear smaller and less threatening, backing away from the fearsome Einar. "Look, we don't want trouble. And you look like big trouble. You may pass." It hastily leaps off the bridge, and swims off, followed by his other two buddies.

Einar, Ziva and Crummock spot a clawed up body hidden under the bridge. There are three +2 arrows, three +1 arrows, a frost-forged chain shirt, a masterwork cold iron battleaxe, and a leather pouch containing two blue sapphires (worth 50 gp each) and 20 gp in coins, on the body.

Retired to Triaxius

What? That didn't just irritate them and get them to attack? What the heck?

'bunch of sissies' Einar watches the merrow leave, turning back to Nadya, "Watch our backs, I don't trust them." As Einar looks behind them he notices the body under the bridge, pulling the body up he quickly strips it of it's gear tucking the arrows in his quiver.. "Shall we move on?"

Strange Aeons Grp 2 |

Venison stew.

Nadya furrows her eyebrows at Einar's stew. "I think I'd better do the cooking next time."

Now

As the party draws closer to the fish camps, Nadya informs the party, "The fishcamps mostly are fishermen. They get nervous around armed people, because its usually the Winter Guard asking for more taxes out of season."

At fishcamps

Arctic gulls fill the overcast sky with their cries over this small shantytown. Ramshackle huts are erected on the cold ground, hard packed and barren from generations of foot traffic. Dories and other small fishing boats are moored to dilapidated piers nearby or pulled ashore on the gray pebbled beach of Glacier Lake. The pervasive smell of fish is everywhere, sometimes fresh, but often with the underlying stench of centuries of decay. Nadya goes to her Uncle Ringerr's dwelling, but finds it crudely broken into and there's an evidence of a fight, some blood on the floor. Some furniture is broken and muddy boot prints leading out of the house. Her uncle Ringerr is no where to be seen.

Following the boot trail leads to a point in the street where it is messed up by someone running a rake through the prints.

Small groups of fisherfolk congregate on the piers or around shacks, engaged in whispered conversations, but with watchful eyes on what transpires around them. An occasional child can also be seen, toiling to repair nets or performing some other chore.

Going in armed to teeth imposes a -2 penalty on diplo check

DC 15 Sense motive:

The villagers are afraid of reprisals if they discuss Ringerr's disappearance.

DC 15 diplo:

Ringeirr was recently “arrested” for “theft” by the Fishcamp Guards, a group of thugs who extort money from the village for their so-called “protection.”

Or you can go after the guy who messed the trail up to intimidate the crap out of him.

Strange Aeons Grp 2 |

At Nadya's warning about the people being nervous around heavily armed people, Mr. Whiskers packs away his crossbow on one of the pack dogs. He puts his mace, sling and sling bullets into his haversack. He does leave his dagger at his belt, figuring that not having a dagger would look strange amongst fishermen.

He tells Einar "If you decide to remove your armor, keep it in a separate bag. If it is in a separate bag and it becomes necessary, I can use one of my scrolls to magically gird you within seconds." If we can avoid combat, that would also be good.

When the trail ends, he looks around. Looking to Crummock he asks "Shall we split up and ask around? Since I am closer to their size, the youngsters may find me less threatening than you."

Sense Motive, +Nivean: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18

All the young humans I've met have been fascinated by Nivean. I might be able to get them interested in speaking with me if they see her.

Diplomacy, ?armed?: 10 + 8 - 2 = 16 I've included the heavily armed penalty in case the group keeps all their weapons at hand. I could also do an Aid Another roll from Nivean if it makes a difference.

Mr Whiskers manages to find few kids who are willing to tell him that those "meanies" (Fishcamp guards) have taken their uncle Ringerr who always gives them candy to the Fishcamp guardhouse. Their parents try to shush them up as they are afraid of offending the Fishcamp guards.

On the way to Fishcamp Guardhouse

A group of Fishcamp guards have encircled a local fisherman and knocked him to the ground.

”Oi Barett, where’s the protection money! You REALLY don’t want our boss, Marcian to get mad, do you?” One of the guards threaten the prone fisherman by holding his ogre hook to his chin.

”No, please, give me another day!I’ll pay back everything! I’ll even give interest!” Barett blubbers as he begs his tormentors from the floor.

”Uh-oh,” The party hears the voice of a small child (one of the children Mr Whiskers spoke to earlier) from behind them. ”Its those baddies who took Uncle Ringerr!” Then the kid runs away.

The Fishcamp Guards look at the party menacingly. "Look, this is really an affair between us, and him. You'll stay out if you know what's good for you."

What does the party want to do? Slide 11

Waiting for others to pipe in. I'm fine with fighting bandits and running them out of the village.

Has it been more than 4 hours since the bridge where I can Mage Armor?

Mr. Whiskers cowers behind Einar's giant frame -- mostly so they can't see him get ready to cast a spell! He grabs a packet of ground mica powder from his pouch.

Hearing Crummock tell him to keep the hat, Einar looks at the man, not sure how to respond. "Well it was a gift for you, you have to accept something..." thinking for a moment, Einar removes the six magical arrows that they had found and the two 'beast' bane arrows that he had carrying. "I know that this isn't equal to the hat, but give these arrows to Nadya, and think about what the hat may be worth. I'd happily give you some gold to make up the difference. I don't expect you to give up something this nice for free, OK?"

Now
'Barrett, huh. not all that much different that the thralls that worked for my dad' Einar walked up, first looking at Barrett, sprawled on the ground and then at the 'guards' smiling, showing a mouth full of fangs he replies. "Your exactly right, a man shouldn't stick his nose into something that's none of his business."

Turning to the fisherman on the ground, as he starts to open his purse, he asks. "Barrett is it? I've been looking to invest in some of the local fishing market, seems like you could use a business partner, how much money do you owe these fine gentleman and what percentage of your business will it get me?" Einar continues opening his purse as he looks from the man on the ground to the men surrounding him.

Strange Aeons Grp 2 |

”I…I owe them 50gp! I’m currently not in business as my nets have been ruined by pikes!Barett stammers.

”You lied to us.” One of the fishcamp guards snarls savagely at the prone fisherman. ”If you’re not in business how would you be paying us tomorrow?”

”Now here’s how things go. You pay off Barett’s debts, we leave him alone. Else we break his legs just to show how things are done here.”

Retired to Triaxius

'first we get the fisherman out of here safe and motivated.' Einar smiles, reaching into his pouch and removes fifty gold pieces. then twenty more. He pulls Barett to his feet handing the man the twenty gold pieces. "Get your nets fixed so your working tomorrow. You and me are now partners, fifty fifty, you give me half of everything you catch until you can pay me back one hundred gold. Tell the other fishermen, I would consider other investments as well. If your not working though it's not these men you will need to worry about, savvy?" Einar gives him another toothy grin.

'Now we get these morons out of here.' Turning to the 'guards' his smile turns into a silent snarl, as he hands the 'speaker' the gold he grasps the mans hand and draws him near so he can smell the spoiled venison stew on Einars breath. "Now, here's your fifty gold pieces, Barett is now my problem, if you think you need anymore money from our business venture you come speak to me. If you go near him again."He looks at the rest of the guards, still holding onto the mans hand he begins to squeeze. "We will have a problem. If you think you have what it takes to get more money ask around, I'm not hard to find. Just ask for 'the Kinslayer.'" He lifts his chin and turns his head so they can see the runes branded on his neck. When he releases the mans hand he intentionally scatters the fifty gold pieces into the mud and the muck.

Strange Aeons Grp 2 |

"Fine. You have your bargain," The speaker draws back from the foul stench of the spoiled venison stew, wrinkling his nose. He winces in pain as Einar squeezes his hand. He then shakes his hand to be sure it is still there, after Einar has shaken it. The rest of guards pick up the gold pieces form the muck, getting themselves all muddy, as they meticulously count every single piece, while the speaker looks at Einar nervously, with no small amount of fear. "Let's get out of here." He informs the rest, as they all scram.

The fisherman gets to his feet and goes over to Einar."I...don't think I'll be able to earn a hundred gold pieces in my lifetime...I can only give you my lucky stone I found at the bottom of the river. Or maybe not so lucky," He gives a weak smile, "Those buggers still accosted me." He hands Einar a cracked red stone, which looks pretty familiar. Like the one that Shui was saying Einar should grab...

Mr Whiskers recognizes the stone as a Cracked Deep Red Sphere.

'yeah, the thralls my father had could never pay their debt either, I always felt sorry for them. Is that the stone that Shui was talking about?' As the fisherman came to thank Einar, he softened his tone a little as he takes the stone. "Well hopefully your luck will change. When you sell your catch, set my part aside, I will count my share in with the hundred, pay me what you can when you can. As long as you are working hard, we will figure it out. Just remember if they return send for me, I will deal with them, and I meant it, if there are others that need an investor, I'm willing to loan money." He smiles again, "If the price is right."

The windows of this large, ugly unpainted building are boarded shut. Its construction is rough, haphazard, as if it were once a small shack that had many additions tacked on later. Barett

"Oh good master, how can I thank you enough!"He gushes as his eyes fill with tears of gratitude, as he accepts the 100 gold pieces. "Please tell me your name so I can name my son after you!"

Honestly if you've just been rescued from a nasty mess, you aren't going to bargain with your rescuer...

Earlier, with Barett:

Crummock smiles warmly.

"Me name is Crummock. Crummock-i-Phail. Good luck, and may Desna smile upon ye always."

True, but that doesn't mean someone can't stand up for them ;-)

After all, based on Medieval economics, we are effectively already millionaires, compared to your average peasant.

That said, I totally get why Einar acted the way he did ;-)

Seeing Einar walk up and talk to the bandits, Mr. Whiskers shrugs and puts his spell materials away. So much for that plan. I wonder what Einar plans to do?

He is momentarily pleased that Einar resolves it without violence, only for it to turn bitter as Einar shakes down Barett for money. I really should talk to him about his mercenary streak. It is likely his greed will get us all in trouble at some point.

While he is pondering that, Crummock goes and pays off the debt. At least he has the right of it!

As the group move on towards the guardhouse, Mr. Whiskers asks Einar and Crummock "Are you sure you want to be spreading your names about like that? This town is frightened and will tell all to any Winter Guard that come through."

Now

Mr. Whiskers moves into the room. He takes a moment to look around before casting his Grease spell under the feet of the remaining Ogre.

Perception, +Nivean: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 2 = 6 Yeah, nothing hidden to see here!

Surprise round: move. Regular round: Active search and cast spell

Grease, +1 DC, DC 16 Reflex

Honestly they're both considered prone since they're sitting in the chairs

The ogre does not slip out of his chair.

Ogre ref: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (19) + 0 = 19

The human takes a defensive position and stands up, but ducks out of the way of Vernai's claw.

Vernai AOO: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

OH good grief not another one, haven't either of you two goody-two-shoes been to a bank? ;)

The cause of the problem was the amount he owed the 'guard.' I assumed that if he owed 50 gp for a day or a week or a month, to pay 30 more (he gave him 50 for the debt, and 20 to get on his feet) to never owe them again was a good deal. The fisherman basically had to come up with two instalments of what he owed the 'guard' on a regular basis. Or so it sounded. Then he's like 'I'll never see 100' If that's true how could he make regular payments of 50? But it's cool Einar doesn't mind being thought of an extortionist, he would have sold the bard for pity sake.

earlier
'My name?' Walking with Mister Whiskers Einar shrugs "I figure if I bear the rune I may as well as use it for profit. It's not like people don't see it and whisper under their breath anyway."

Now
'Blast there goes my easy kill' Seeing Ziva gut the ogre he had bitten, Einar smiles a toothy smile. "The kill is yours but I still got first blood." He quickly looks at the other Ogre still sitting in his chair. Einars smile widens and he quickly begins to move across the room, drawing a javelin as he goes, he stops about halfway to the Ogre, almost knocking over a table and throws the weapon at the seated enemy. "Blast, missed by a hairs breadth." having rushed his throw, in hurry to draw first blood on the next Ogre, Einar buries the javelin in the wall behind it. Throwing his hand up he holds his thumb and forefinger and inch apart showing the Ogre how close it came to his head.

Move action: 25 ft. draws javelin, attack: throws javelin
attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12 for damage: 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10

If I don't get it wrong its Einar gave him 20 gp, paid of his debt of 50 gp, and asked to be returned 100 gp, correct? Interest rate calculations...around 42% interest? (I hate maths)But its generally flexible in repayment time etc.

Oh it's extortion plain and simple, but only once and for less than the guards ;)

On the money, Mr. Whiskers was so hopeful when it was looking like you were being charitable. Then you turned it from charity to a way to earn a small amount of money.

Arrgh! i should have greased the unattended weapon! As for sitting down, I had only seen mention of the man sitting down. Oh well, next time guess I'll ask for clarification.

With only one opponent left, Mr. Whiskers figures this battle is nearly over, Mr. Whiskers moves closer to the remaining ogre and casts his acid blob spell. Probably only make him mad, but my crossbow is still with the dogs.

Ranged Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Acid Splash damage: 1d3 ⇒ 3

I wonder where their boss will come in from? They were obviously calling for someone.

Am I misreading the map and are their two opponents or just one like Mr. Whiskers said.

Ziva heads in the direction of the Ogre, taking the total defence action as she moves, while Vernai attempts to rip through the remaining human with her claws.

Crummock and Geist pound forward to attack the human...

MW Cold Iron Starknife: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22, for 1d4 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7 damage.

Bite: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 6 + 2 = 24, for 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8 damage.

...whilst Nadya takes a couple of pot-shots at the ogre.

Actually the human is the boss lol. Not a big one, but oh well...

Vernai rakes him with her claws and Geist bites his foot. He draws his rapier and tries to stab Geist."Why are you barging into my guardhouse?" He demands.

rapier: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
dmg: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Mr Whiskers acid blop hits the ogre on his shin. And Nadya manages to stick the ogre on his shoulder.

Crummock missed due to his total defence action last round

Einar pls
