IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ

This table already has a full complement of players. Please do not submit to this discussion thread unless you are one of my pre-recruited PCs. There will be no recruitment thread.

Adventure description from the scenario page:

Rumors of a lost shrine in the Segang Jungle draw the Pathfinder Society’s attention, but the prohibitive cost of sending a team into the wilds of Jalmeray threatens to shut down the expedition before it even begins. Fortunately, a wealthy patron has offered to fund the PCs travel expenses in return for their help in his decades-old quest. Can the Pathfinders balance this new obligation with their exploration of the archaeological site?

Huh, thought i had posted here.
Still gonna do Gunari, because no one else is really ready. Going to save Black Jak Sparrow for Wisps (so he's still level 1), and can't quite play Lucius yet (waiting to finish GMing something that has a boon he needs). Really, the only other option would be Trask, and he's level 3 as well now. Probably should have put him on slow advancement. Oh, well.

That beings said, depending on when we start, Z'hor'll B'bblebr'x, my Undine Watersinger (Bard) might be ready. He's playing Prince of Augustana right now, and we've got one more encounter left.

He'll be level 2, but I wouldn't want to step on Miro's toes.

All good. I don't think toe stepping is going to be an issue with this group. We'll be starting in earnest on Monday, but I may post some intro stuff over the weekend depending on how things go with reading the scenario.

A character who wants to attempt to move three cards during his turn can do so by taking a full-round action. That character must overcome both obstacles on the card he is leaving. In this case, if a character fails either obstacle check by 5 or less, he only moves one card forward and his turn ends. If a character fails either obstacle check by more than 5, he cannot move at all that turn. A character unfortunate enough to fail two obstacle checks in a turn becomes mired in his current square (he might have fallen from a ledge, gotten a foot stuck amid roots, or got caught in a crowd, for example). A character who is mired must spend another full-round action becoming unmired and effectively loses his next turn in the chase. In some cases, becoming mired might impart additional penalties (such as falling damage).

@ GM Damo Let me know if I didn't do this correctly, or if I still need to make more checks for my turn.

I ended up performing checks for both obstacles on card 1, and so far, 1 obstacle for card 2.

Either way, you deserve a lot of credit, this is totally awesome!

Based on the way the rules read, it looks like you did it right Ibid...

Though that doesn't seem to make much logical sense... Moving 3 cards for going over the hedge row twice is just odd...

I personally don't care how we do it (because it is awesome) but it makes more sense to do it the way Sheeba did as an example, 1 move action per card. Just my thoughts :)

I rolled Cyrus' acrobatics check as a +11 because thats what it is at level 3, I haven't updated his profile yet, just in case you were wondering.

CLW: 0 charges left (0 wands), CMW: 43 charges left (2 wands) | Tactical | Portraits | Loot | Wiki

I agree with Cyrus about it making more sense, but rules be rules and you have to get ahead somehow - even if you do risk being mired in the hedgegrow. I think it's just putting in a super awesome effort that spurns you on to greater feats of greatness later on. I may house-rule it out later on (and go with, say, take a cumulative -5 penalty on everything you attempt, and get mired wherever you fail), but for now I'm good with using RAW. After all, without at least trying RAW, what would we have to base our criticisms and then improvements on? ;-)

Oh, and yes, Ibid, you did it right!

I may not have done it right, though - seems I low-balled the DCs. Heh.

Aaaand Voila! Cyrus is updated to level 3 (excited giggle).

GM - I purchased a wand of shield with 2 PP (40% chance of success currently, likely won't use that IN combat, hopefully just before...) and also purchased a masterwork light crossbow. (and bolts) Keeping the daggers for now, and apparently turning into the guy who drops 50 weapons on the pile when he isn't allowed to bring them in to the king's audience chamber.

Also, it looks like we'll be APL 3 for the next scenario. That means we could play it at Tier 4-5 with the 4 player adjustment if we wanted to (unless I'm mistaken) if Finarin doesn't mind risking his level 2 skin.

Of course, if we play the Wounded Wisp for all but Finarin, there won't be any need to worry about the above situation. ;-) Up to all of you, I guess.

Are we all level 3 except for Finarin?

That puts us at APL3, which means we have to play up. The fringe case only matters for seasons 0-3, which don't have four player adjustments. Or at least that is how most people read that section of the guide. As for rewards, we still get just the out of subtier gold, but access to items and boons for the higher tier.

This could definitely be rough. We will need to make sure to pay attention to if/when we can rest, and we may need extra consumables.

Human (Minnesotan) Rules Lawyer 4, GM 5!

I could possibly bring i. My level five inquisitor, or my level four druid (though she is kind of weak) if you all would prefer. Would give us a character in subtier, at least.

I think, even if I can bring in my bard, we won't be low enough for lower tier.

Dark Archive

Human (Minnesotan) Rules Lawyer 4, GM 5!

Well, I just checked, and Faustus made 6th level last time I played him, so he is out.

However, I do have a guy that has 1 chronicle on him. Playing a level 1 (shudder) allows us to play lower subtier (we'd be at APL 2.5)

I think it should be up to finarin, since he would be at the most risk. Either way I qualify for the out of tier gold, but the higher tier boons and items available would be nice.

I agree with silbeg, we would need to be more careful about our tactics, ie no more of me rushing ahead :)

I think my comment was misleading: Miro and Finarin are currently level 2, so our APL is below 3 for Segang. We're fine. For the next scenario, it will be APL 3 if Gunari tags along. No big deal, and we'll worry about it when we come to it, but if Finarin likes we could play the next scenario one tier up.

Oh, and to answer Ibid's question, Gunari would get more cash, because he's not playing for "out of subtier" rewards anymore. Everyone else will get the same one way or the other, but the items on the chronicle sheet will be the subtier 4-5 items, which are generally cooler and more expensive.

Finarin may, I believe, get more cold hard cash also, but I'd have to do more research on that one.

CLW: 0 charges left (0 wands), CMW: 43 charges left (2 wands) | Tactical | Portraits | Loot | Wiki

Okay folks, done some more reading. Sorry to break up the turkey chase action with book keeping, but it seems we need to round our APL to the nearest whole number...

Finarin & Miro: 2
Cyrus, Ibid, Amaranti: 3
Gunari: 4

APL = 17 / 6 = 2.83 (rounded up) = 3

This means we need to play tier 4-5 with the 4 player adjustment. I've read some of the adventure thus far, and there are no red flags for Miro or Finarin. They may get a KO, but very unlikely to be a death. The main issue will be that skill tests are about 5 DC higher - which shouldn't be too much of a problem for someone who can get a 47 on acrobatics.

Just make sure you stock up on alchemists fire, holy water, and all the other "standard" gear for a well-prepared adventurer. There are two fights that do a good amount of damage, but just send your warpriest in first, make sure you always heal after a battle and don't be stupid, you'll be fine.

Alternatively, if Gunari plays a level 2, you'll round back down to 2.5 and can choose which subtier to play (which you would only do so you can play the easier subtier).

I can also confirm that, if we play subtier 4-5, Finarin and Miro will get the juicier gold amount.

So... voting time?

Determining Subtiers:

From the Season 6 Guide to Organized Play
In order to determine which subtier a mixed-level group of PCs must play in, calculate the group’s average party level (APL). Divide the total number of character levels by the number of characters in the party. You should always round to the nearest whole number. If you are exactly at 0.5, let the group decide which subtier they wish to play.

Starting with Season 4, scenarios are designed for six characters and contain instructions on how to adjust the scenario for four-character parties. When the APL of a table is between two subtiers (like APL 3 for a Tier 1–5 scenario), a party of four characters must play the lower tier without any adjustments for party size. A party of five to seven characters whose APL is between two subtiers must play the higher tier with the four-character adjustment.

For scenarios written in Seasons 0 to 3, when the APL is in between subtiers, a party of six or seven characters must play the higher subtier. Parties with four or five characters must play the lower subtier. In the fringe case where there are no players that are high enough to have reached the subtier level (such as a party of six 3rd level characters), the group may decide to play down to the lower subtier.

Gunari is still level 3, which puts us at 2.67 (which rounds to 3).

I don't know that I have a level 2 available... all I would have is a level 1. Which I can put together this weekend, if we don't want to play up.

Gunari has done a decent job of pumping his AC (normally AC 22, 24 with Shield of Faith). I am looking at some magical enhancements that I might be able to get, which could drive it up. That'd enable me to tank a little. Plus, if Ibid, Cyrus, and Amaranti are all 3rd, and we have Karshaiga, we'll have decent firepower, I think.

Gunari would say he's up for the challenge!

I'm fine either way. On some scenario's playing up is practically a suicide, but I hope Damien would have pointed it out if this was one of them :)

The full quote begins with For scenarios written in Seasons 0 to 3 . It's because those scenarios don't have a 4 player adjustment available.

And you are right that I would point out an obvious TPK or even K moment. KO is all you really need to worry about. You've all got plenty of healing available.

Holy shit am I pissed I am missing all this turkey fun. Now I know what it feels like to be Amaranti. Sorry I have been AFK my daughter was in the Chicago Thanksgiving parade and that took all my time the last few days. Back to normal posting routines so get ready, I haven't checked Ophiuch's thread yet.

Playing up and down:

Let me say that I am sooo very thankful for this group. It has been tremendous to game with you all these last few months. I have felt a resurgence in the enjoyment of old. Everytime we go into combat I get a bit nervous, not for the normal reasons. I don't have the stable of characters that say .... Silbeg has. If Finarin or Ophiuchus dies, I can no longer game with you all. And that would be devastating to me.

I am working on getting in a scenario or 2 in this weekend to ding to 3. I really gain a lot of power at 3 - Dervish Dance so all my hits get the +4 damage, and a magus arcana. I could do essentially 4d6+4 damage in one round followed by 2d6+8. Right now the best I can do is 3d6 a round followed by 2d6.

On the flip side, this group is great at tactics and DPR if needed. I do not want to be the anchor to hold us back. I am less than 100gp away from an upgrade and I am ticked I can't get it, so I know those higher tiers reward are so worth it.

Sorry for the stream of conscious [damm this coffee it good), so I am in for playing up. Trying to even out and then some so we don't have to worry about this again.

So I have a ton of PPs to spend, should I go CLW or something to boost my meager 18 ac like Shield?

As a last resort I could always GM and Lort and Gunari can ride again. I would have to use my 'Daddy' voice to keep you two in line. GMs make the worst PCs.

I 100% agree with this, Finarin. I am so grateful to be able to participate with this group. And likewise, playing with everyone in this group has rekindled my love for tabletop RPGs, even so much so that my in person gaming sessions are starting to stale in comparison to the adventures and interactions with this group! I don't even want to think about what will happen if Ibid or Vox doesn't make it out alive... I have realized that Ibid has quickly become my favorite character of my gaming career.

Thanks everyone for the great times!

So, looks like we'll be playing up. Absolutely fine by me. I will make sure, also, to take the most PC generous interpretation of the written tactics possible (it's still PFS, so can't do too much to reduce trouble, but I won't be gunning for you like I was in say... Crypt of the Everflame).

As for PC death, Finarin... you would totally still be able to game with us. Aside from the fact that I'm sure everyone would pool resources to get you a raise dead (one of the few times pooling resources is allowed to happen), I'm also sure these guys would be willing to play with a new character of yours until it is of appropriate level to game with the "big boys" again.

My stable of characters, also, is slim. GM credits are a lot less risky than playing, though! It's always a bit hairy when Lort is out there on a real mission (I love the character)... especially with his "kick the door in" tactics. ;-)

Regarding a shield, pretty sure dervish dance means your off-hand needs to be free, so don't waste the PP. CLW is a good use of PP, and it would be nice if everyone had a wand to contribute to the pool - not that I think anyone here would resent it if you didn't.

As for the item you want but are short on GP for, you can't pool resources for permanent items on your character sheet. However, you are allowed to pool resources during a scenario. I would consider loaning the gold to buy the item in-game a use of this rule: You may, however, allow another player to borrow an item for the duration of a scenario.

So, unless someone knows of a rule that forbids it, I would allow you to ask for financial aid from another PC, buy the item in-game for this session, and then buy it "for real" at the end of the scenario. If it's an item you really want, I'm sure it'll help to cope with the higher-tier you're playing in.

Finarin, is the spell shield on your spell list? I bought a wand with pp for this scenario, we can share it, and having you cast it on me will be easier than me trying to roll use magic device over and over... Then you don't have to carry the shield...

By the way, read this adventure and I am loving the flavor of it. I hope all of you have as much desire to play a safari-style romp through the jungle as I do.

@ Cyrus Shield is on my list so that is an autocast for me. Thanks for the offer to share. I will gladly wand you anytime.

@ GM I was going for the +1 to my armor and am 71 gp short. As generous as your are that is not an item to share. Looking over things to sell and I don't have 142 worth of items. Have to wait until the scenario is over. :(

Most likely going to pick up that happy stick, and load up on some standard adventure items.

Finarin: I wasn't talking about the sharing aspect, I was talking about the borrowing aspect. In this case, you would be borrowing 71 items total, all pieces of gold.

Ok, so getting prepped for the next scenario.

First things first. Never took care of the Necrotic Boils.

So the day after the boils set in.

Con Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2

Fort Save, DC11 to cure: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (14) + 0 = 14

Whew... So with those rolls, I take the damage the first day, but it is cured by passing the save that same day, and that 2 damage eventually heals. No harm, no foul. No one tell Sheeba... Or Sirena...

Doesn't work, unfortunately. Shield is a personal spell.

I had forgotten. I would have cleared those at the end of the last scenario if I'd remembered. Good point about shield, Gunari! I'd missed that.

Next post in preperation.

Adding to the things I have already purchased (mw light crossbow)

Selling my mundane light mace, purchasing a masterwork, alchemically silvered light mace, 3 alchemist fire, 2 oil of magic weapon, and sweet talking Sheeba into giving me a flask of uncut Essence of Razmir.

PFS Field guide says that strong alchohol is as good at breaking a mimic's glue grasp as anything...

If anyone else has any suggestions on consumables, or things we should purchase, please speak up! I am drawing a blank.

Also, I am lending the necessary gold for Finarin to buy his magic armor. You can pay me back after the scenario is over and we are all rolling in the fat paycheck :)

And let me just say that there are some groups I have played with in PbP that I would have probably not volunteered to pool resources to bring a dead player back. In this one, I would sell all I own (of my fake, imaginary toys) to bring any of you back. :) I agree with Ibid, Cyrus has become my favorite character for several reasons, and this group/these games have really lit my fire for gaming in general.

And to think, I only checked the discussion thread on a random whim of a thought. Otherwise I would have never seen GM Damo's invitation! It's providence! :)

I have good feelings about making GenCon happen next year.... Like better than a 50/50 shot.

Ahh... forgot completely about the "personal" range. So I guess I have to roll and roll and roll until I get at least a 12... So will only be pre-buffing myself with that...

Finarin can still use charges off of it though :)

Edit: And Gen Con is July 30-Aug 2. Just thought I would throw that out there.

Much and many thanks. I updated my inventory, just need to scan and upload. New Additions: Heavy Mace became a light alchemical silvered mace, scimitar became a cold-iron scimitar, and bought a CLW wand w/ 2 PP. That leaves me 98 short for the +1.

I don't think I'll be able to easily swing GenCon two years running. HOWEVER if at least 3 (maybe even 2) of you fine lads are going, I will try so, so hard to make it. I will burn wife brownie points galore in order to make it happen. Since it is the weekend directly following my wife's birthday (29th July), it's going to be a metric f*ck ton of brownie points, too! It's so many brownie points that even raising the topic now would cost me (overflow effect and all that).

Still, I would spend them if it got me there with 2-3+ of you fine chaps. I would even wear chaps if it helped. Hmm, I live in Texas, shouldn't be hard to rustle up a pair...

Oh, and if you can at all avoid it, do not stay at La Quinta Inn & Suites in downtown Indianapolis. The place was an overpriced dump and the service was absolutely dreadful. I stayed there with friends on a budget this year. Never again.

You can get quite a few hotels at the moment who will charge no deposit and allow you to change or cancel your booking for free. If you want to get a good deal and beat the rush... I don't see why you wouldn't book Indianapolis accommodation right now. Hmm. I may just do that.
