Just checking if anyone wants to do a Pathfinder game based on Ancient China's Spring and Autumn Period (the Feudal Period before the rise of the First Emperor, Chin Haungdi). It will take place in my world, FAR east of Phaeselis, City of Psionics.

Watch this first, please -- the Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom start cinematic.

The Land is the Land of the Seven Rivers.

Seven rivers, fourteen Feudal States.

fourteen Lands, fourteen warlords.

Your Player Characters live in a land based on Ancient China. Just like a good fantasy, Wuxia film, elements from all parts of the history of china, even though it takes place before the great wall is built.

Races available:
Humans --> The humans of the land have predominately Chinese faces. Player characters are expected to be subjects of the Emperor, of the Middle Kingdom; but players have the option to play foreign Barbarians from the Eastern Isles (Japan), from Southern Lands (Southern China) (the sichuan Basin to the lands of the Viet), from the Viet lands (Viet), and the lands of the Northern Barbarians (Huns, Zhou, proto-Koreans). (Humans are Dominate)

Major Races
Spirit Folk (Elves) --> The elves are mainly elves with Chinese or Korean faces. There are no elves with Japanese faces. The Spirit Folk are scattered amongst the rivers, bamboo forests, and sea coasts of the Middle Kingdom. The Spirit Folk have their own kingdom, called the Kingdom of Cherry Blossoms.

Dwarves --> The Dwarves have asian faces and are located in southern lands. They aren't very popular, they congregate in the jungles, and are considered something of an oddity at best; entertaining fools at worst.

Dragonborn --> Unlike the Occidental Dragonborn (from 4e), the Oriental Dragonborn are humanoid dragons with the heads, and faces of the Imperial Dragons. Which look something like this. They have to be made with different rules, I think.

Minor Races
Kitsune --> The Kitsune are considered fey, for one reason. They are typically worshipped in Oriental Lands. PCs should be careful about hanging about kitsune shrines and not do something stupid (like tying strings around a fox idol, for instance). Certain things may result in bad luck or a serious marriage with a kitsune bride or groom. Red Kitsune (Kitsune) and black kitsune (nogitsune) are the most common clans. What they might look like.

Nagaji --> Some Nagaji have settled in the southern lands and jungles, having traveled there from Aryavarta. They still worship the naga, and they have brought naga with them.

Vanara --> Also from Aryavarta. The Vanaras are anthro-simians based on the Rhesus Macaque. They worship Sun Wongkong (Hanuman) the Monkey King as their spiritual Father, but say they came out of eggs.

Wayangs --> Things of Shadow. People say they originated from an auspicious winter solstice.

Teiflings (Oni-Blooded) --> As if any human would mate with an ogre to create a Tiefling line. The ogre Kingdom is the threat to all of the 14 lands of the Middle Kingdom and may be the factor that will cause them to unite. Or not. :(

Classes Allowed:

Barbarian, Bard, Fighter, Monk, Cavalier, Paladin, Cleric (Buddhist or Confucian only); Oracle (Ancestors or the Tao); Summoner, Sorcerer (called wu), Wizard (wu jen), Shaman (Ancestors or Buddhist), Magus, Alchemist.

Looks interesting. What is allowed in terms of books and point buy?

Scarab Sages

I'm interested.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm interested in the idea as well, but I'm curious to know if I were to create a character, if I didn't want them to originate from Chinese culture, do that automatically have to be barbarian or are you just saying that those cultures are best known as barbaric and uncivilized?

20 points. :) Oh, books. You can refer to the Dragon Empires Gazetteer for the time being. My Wiki isn't ready yet for revelation. Uhm, 1st level, I guess.

Books: Core, APG, ARG, UM, UC, Magic of the Inner Sea (if you are planning to create a Tattooed Sorcerer).

No Samurai or Ninja unless your from the Eastern Islands. Some L5R fan might yell at us for not using L5R. (hee hee!)

Draconic bloodline works differently, and I haven't really worked that out yet. But you don't get wings, though. You might get flight.

I'll just keep tabs though until you have more information. I have a base idea of what I'm looking at, but will have a better idea once you have more information for us. when are you closing recruitment?

The Eastern Islands is considered semi-civilized. They are based on Sengoku Japan with a smattering of L5R.

The rest are barbarian, magical, or savage lands.

Silver Crusade

At the beginning of July.

I see its in the land of psionics, but psions arent on the list of allowed classes. Is that an oversight?

Silver Crusade

No, it's not an oversight. It's to show how separate the two lands are. Even though they are in the same world, there is something like 10,000 miles or so between them.

Phaeselis is a city, like Antioch, where all of the Psions in an Empire like the Alexandrian Empire were gathered. The Middle Kingdom is the Middle Kingdom. Psionic classes are entirely optional here, but not listed in order to emphasize that the place has a magic and romance of all it's own.

oic. man you got my hopes up for a minute. psionic friendly oriental themed games are my favorite

It is psionic friendly. :)

You can add: psions, soulknives, psychic warriors, cryptics, marksmen, wilders, aegis, and vitalists to the list.

Oooh ok, I think I see what your saying. The listed classes are everywhere. You can still play a psionic but should originate from the part of the country where it is taught. Is that correct?

Uhm, as long as your character has an oriental background, yes. I don't know where to put them yet, but you can think of them has having strange powers beyond the understanding of the Taoists.

awesome. i would be pretty happy to be a part of this game:) id be submitting a telepath

Hello DM :)

I might submit a character too :)

Silver Crusade

A list of classes available. :)

Rogues, Bards, and Psion classes will be added in the morning.

I'm curious if there is any group more akin to the Mongols in this setting?

The idea is for a sell sword with no clan attachment.

Yes. Yes there is.

I'd definitely be interested. I'm not sure what I'd play, but it would be something.

Yes. Yes there is.

Cool.

Which leads me to my next question: Would you allow the Slayer? Thematically it should fit I think, bounty hunters and sell swords fit most every where after all.

are you set on 1st level, you seemed unsure. Building concept now. I wouldn't mind starting a bit higher as games are slow anywasy and lots die before getting to level. Just a thought.

I am going to go with Nagaji Urban Barbarian /Crossblooded (Dragon + Abysal) Sorc (going DD)

should be fun i think :)

Can you tell me what publication the slayer is in?

I might toss up a character as well

Backstory:

Kai was born in a border village close to the ogre kingdom. He was a strong and healthy boy. His parents were farmers. At the age of 5 his village was attacked. All were slaughtered by the oni. Kai managed to hide in some hay and remained unfound. He awoke the next morning to the bloody aftermath. He was not strong enough to bury his parents but said words over them and set them ablaze. He had to make it to the city if he wanted a change at survival. He packed up what he could fine and headed out. It was a three day journey. On the second day he succumbed to his fatigue and passed out on the road. Fate intervened. An old hermit was out collecting some herbs when he stumbled up on the boy.

The old man took the boy in . When Kai awoke the old man introduced himself and asked why he was alone. Kai explained what had happened. The Old man asked the boy if he would like to be strong enough to not let things like this happen to him again. Kai answered yes. From there his training began. The old hermit was a gifted swordsman and could harness his chi to alter his body. The training was long and difficult, but Kai emerged a man. Kai would use his new ability to protect those too week to protect themselves from the ogre’s. His first prey was a mighty ogre. Kai followed it for hours as it hunted when it rested for the night he made his assault. The battle was long, but with fortune and favor Kai came out victorious. He claimed the Oni’s blade as his own, and took on the title of Slayer of Oni.

Slayer is one of the new class in the playtest version of the Advance class Guide

I have an other idea for my character.... (how are the domains of war / destruction / heroism (ie the more martial domain represented? are they playable?)

Yeah, by all four, actually.

  • Guan Yu is a Taoist deity.
  • Huang-di the Yellow Emperor, is an Ancestral deity.
  • Bodhidharma and Sun Wongkong are also war deities, associated with Buddhism.

  • The Slayer is indeed from the ACG playtest (found here if you don't have it). The book will release this august, at which time I would update the character to the release version.

    Silver Crusade

Ah, I see. Ashe submitted a character that fills that role, but you are welcome to do one up.

    Fluff:

Setsuna spent his early childhood years blissfully ignorant of his heritage, his surroundings, and his family's rocky situation. His mother and father found each other in the midst of upheaval, revolution, and familial disputes, falling in love. However, as with any two people who are steeped in tradition do, they both tried to assert themselves with regard to which direction Setsuna upbringing should go. His mother insisted that he be taught calligraphy, diplomacy, and be educated on the finer points of culture to represent her mother's proud clan. His father believed that he should be schooled in the ways of the warrior, learned in the art of the sword, in order to fight. What Setsuna was not told, however, was that they were not even from the same region nor even completely human, and had in fact been on opposing sides of their family's conflicts, with very contradicting traditions and goals. It meant that, no matter his upbringing and accomplishments, it was likely that he would always be known as an outsider in the provinces, due to his "impure" blood.
In the end, they could not agree, and despite their bond, the subject always left them inflamed and enraged at each other beyond all reason.

As a small child, Setsuna never understood, but as his formative years continued, he began to grasp the basics of the dispute, of strife of sorrow. Eventually, he came up with a surprising solution: he ran away.

How a child in his teens survived , no one is quite sure.

But before long a few years at best he has been blessed with the powers of the Fortune of War.

Armed with a commanding presence and the tools to defend himself Setsuna would never let anything or anyone determine his fate

I can change my backstory, I didn't notice someone wanting to play a slayer till I posted and the thread updated, was working on the build in word offline so it didn't get eaten. I don't want to cut anyone out. Just thought it was a nice simple but fitting story :)

I was going for the Tank/Kill stuff role.

@Sloinas, Katana is exotic to use in one hand, two handed martial like the bastard sword.

i know but it is the Fortune of War favorite weapon (and therefore free weapon prof for clerics) to use with 1 hand :)

oh yeah nice :), Glad you have good AC with on 9HP. ;0

If we both get picked I will always be watching you waiting for you true oni to take over and come out. Could make for some good RP. We will but heads alot ;)

how do you get 22 str and 18 hp ? (on a 20 point buy)

and yes butting heads would be interesting

(i guess the powerful built feature is like the gotiath ability to wield weapons that are 1 size larger) where is it coming from?

You might do best with a Tian Jian sword. It's much more flexible, but of course you can do what you want.

sure would you mind providing me with its relevant stats? ( or a nice 2 hander?)

Interested. Is it ok if I put up fluff for approval? Crunch always takes me a bit of time :) The basic idea is a wandering monk who was found at the doorsteps of a monastery as an infant and adopted and raised there. So she doesn't know her background but I pretty much imagine her to be dark skinned so she's a bit of an outcast to boot. Don't know if the skin colour would mess with your setting but it's inspired by the Diablo 3 female monk which is a pretty awesome character design.

I know Monks have a bit of a bad rep as being MAD but I still really like them.

@Solinas, 10pts for 16, +2 human, Aegis Tranformative Body gets Brawn a +2 bonus for free and you can take brawn for 2 points ever 5 levels and the free one doesn't count toward level restrictions. Yeah that is exactly what powerful build does. You count as a size larger when its better for you and you can wield oversized weapons like in 3.5.

HP is d10+2con,+4feats, +2 favored class. Finding your Kin adds +1hp and 1sp to your favored class each level so +2hp and 1sp per level.

That would be a Wo Dao (Bastard Sword) (OA 3rd Edition, page 203).

    Chinese Swords

Is this still just an interest check or has it grown into a recruitment thread?

    Silver Crusade

Pretty much. I didn't know a lot of people wanted to come out of the woodwork and adventure in a land like Ancient China. Most of the time, they enjoyed the adventures in Feudal Japan or play L5R.

Sold on the Wo Dao (bastard sword) :)

The character idea I have is quite different from Ashe's, both mechanically and story wise.

Mechanically he's a smarter fellow and I'll most likely go dual wield with him (if only there was a real world equivalent of the saw tooth sabre).

Story wise he's quite different as well. His entire family and clan still lives, as far as he knows, he simply chose to part with them and go his own way. He also is a bounty hunter and tracker for hire more than a hunter of a specific group of beings. If an ogre offered him a job to kill another ogre or a (evil) human underling he'd take it. It's just that he won't help oppress people or hunt the innocent. As such most of his work actually consists of tracking down wanted criminals.

Stricia will be a Female Qinngong Monk. Her crunch is going to be basically higher Str and Wis and will probably slightly dump Charisma (9) to make room for the other stats.

    Fluff:
I was found, they tell me, wailing at the door of the temple before I was old enough to walk, or even roll over. For the monks of the order this was not an unusual event as many of its honoured members were similarly abandoned, and then adopted, orphans. What was unusual was me. The colour of my skin and the colour of my eyes, marked me out as different right from the start and it was a mark that I bore with difficulty as I grew. I was the frequent target of the other children and, though it violated the order's creed of justice and equality, even of some of the teacher monks that guided us.

But I learned to defend myself and grew tall and lithe and skilled and strong. I won the respect of my peers, at first grudging, but finally unreserved.

The monastery I was raised in is the home of the Temple of True History. Built on the idea that history is not what is written by the victorious but what actually and truly happened and dedicated to finding and preserving it in our records. For that is truth, and the truth is precious, for without it there is no justice and without justice there is no law.

Of my friends I can say very little as I have very few, treated as I was first with derision and then with caution. A few of my seniors who took their vows seriously and treated me with respect maybe as well as a handful of those my age who greeted me with friendly words and spirited training. But I did have the support and wisdom of Cofu, my master, to rely upon and he became like a father to me. And there is of course Mi-Yang an orphan like myself three years younger who became my fast friend even though we are in so many ways opposite. These two I consider family.

After I completed my training I discovered that I had no real reason to stay. So, saying my goodbyes to my esteemed mentor Cofu, and my best friend Mi-Yang, both of whom I consider family, I took my leave to wander and perhaps find the truth of my origins. I follow the traditions of the traditions and have taken a vow of truth which I take very seriously.

    My name is Stricia.

Please let me know what you think. I'm a pretty frequent poster as you can see from my other aliases if that helps my application :)

    Scarab Sages

I'd like to create a noble that advances as Rogue/Fighter (Lore Warden) until 5th then going Noble Scion. They'd use dual fighting fans and light Armor.

If okay, I could have alias up tonight.
