Gunari Maximoff |
We then walk back. "Ok, I guess that must be the door. Huh... wonder how the faces go with the music. Never was any good in music, except singing drinking songs!"
The whole way back, Gunari "sings" at the top of his lungs,
"But choose out a fairer and kinder than she, And banish despair in a mug, a mug !
From thee such pleasant joys, liquor, does flow, Which cures the distemper of heart and mind ;
Our wits, O, then more riper do grow, By perfect experience the same we find.
Then he is an ass that seems to despair At any coy frown of the wanton pug ;
Be merry and jolly, and drown all thy care For ever and aye in a mug, a mug!
As for the liquor, the juice of the grape Which often does into men's noddles creep,
And sometimes it makes them as wise as an ape, And sometimes it lays, like stocks, to sleep.
But whilst we are more sober and civil than they, Like brothers together in friendship hug,
And ever account it our duty to pay A worthy respect to the mug, the mug !
As for the spirit and juice of malt, It ripens the fancy of men enough,
And he is an ass that pretends to find fault With Varisians because of their potent talk.
There's nothing more choice in all our land, To make a young gallant both brisk and smug,
And therefore no longer disputing we'll stand, But ever admire the mug, the mug !"
Gunari Maximoff |
Once back, Gunari looks at the recorder, closely, and the faces. He is specifically looking for any correlation between things on the recorder and the faces.
Then, after taking a quick swig of whiskey, Gunari starts lightly blowing into the instrument, covering up the first, second, and fourth holes. He assumes that there will likely be 5 holes....
Gunari Maximoff |
If that does nothing, Gunari will push on the faces, to see if they depress at all. He is tempted to use Cayden's churchkey to make holes in the wall, but, for the moment, will use patience....
GM.Boldr |
There are no holes on the recorder-like mouthpiece (see image). The music appears to be on auto-play with Gunari creating the same exact song as Denbora. You seem to have no control over what is played.
Denbora Init: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Kain and Afficus know enough about music to piece a little of it together: See Handouts.
Do you still wish to push faces, and if so, what face(s) do you wish to push?
Gunari Maximoff |
Gunari, really just guessing, pushes at the face of the cyclops, hopping it moves, and blows into the recorder.
GM.Boldr |
Gunari starts pressing in the cyclops face. You all see it begin to move into the facade. He starts blowing the recorder tip causing the deep tones to again emanate from within the cliff.
He smiles as the cyclops face moves into the wall, going flush with the stone.
Gunari and Denbora moved to be next to face.

Gunari's smile disappears as the entirety of the waterfall begins to solidify and take form. An enormous tentacle of water water flows out of the Frothripper, grabbing Gunari by the neck. You see the form begin to move up the waterfall as Gunari is pulled with it. First five feet, then additional ten feet. The creature disappears out of view, blocked by the cave's ceiling. For a moment you see Gunari held aloft in the roaring tide, floating in mid-air, water pouring over him. As suddenly as he was pulled into this position, he disappears into the flow as whatever had him lets go.
You see the face on the wall move back into its original position.
I'll see if you can react to Gunari's soon to be tragic fall (i.e. feather fall) and roll the damage at the beginning of the next turn.
Gunari, regardless please make a swim check or reflex save, and then another swim check.
That was a surprise round action and a first round action.

Correction - Raven does get a 1st round action at the top of the initiative order (I missed him due to including Chocobo in the initial initiative line-up and still thinking about that). That was my bad.
Raven may retcon in a pre-elemental action on the first round, and then he will get to go again as part of this action phase as the first action of round two.
To both Denbora and Afficus, "The creature disappears out of view, blocked by the cave's ceiling." You may do a different action if you wish.

Getting everything back up to speed with the actions already submitted.
Raven hits the creature not once, but twice. His spear seems to simply go "sploosh" into the waterfall and not cause much damage. His attempt to push the creature out of the waterfall appears to have been a dismal failure.
Denbora starts pressing faces. He gets through the caged face, and the face with no mouth. Each slowly going flush with the rocky wall.
Afficus' action cannot succeed due to the creature being 15' up the cliff face at this time. You have neither LOS or LOE. You may retake your action.
Kain can still take an action.

Gunari is currently located in the flowing water at the base of the waterfall 100 feet below and may act.

Really sorry all, this week kicked my ass - I just got around to this.
Moved Raven and Kain to allow Raven the action of interacting with the wall (he was too far away otherwise).
Raven moves forward and is able to press one face as he watches it fall flush with the face of the stone wall. Almost immediately, the huge water elemental again moves in closer from above, rushing down along the water before stepping slightly out of the waterfall.

The creature sees Raven and Denbora at work and strikes out with a 15' whip of water at Denbora. It strikes him hard, causing the Gnome to buckle slightly as he takes the damage. Denbora reaches out at the wall for some purchase, but quickly realizes that he has been grappled by the huge creature. The water elemental uses the same tentacle holding Denboara to cleave into Raven who also feels the blow shudder through his body. It also attempts to grapple Raven, but also fails at this attempt. Denbora is moved out into the freezing, pouring water.
Concentration: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (6) + 16 = 22
Afficus, realizing he is within melee range of the creature, attempts to cast his spell defensively. It fizzles and he loses the casting. He backs up 5' to have a better chance next time (at least I assume you would back up).

Unless you can provide an FAQ stating otherwise, I will respectfully disagree that the tattoo increases your caster level for concentration. While I agree that it does for spell effect, I do not agree otherwise. Any arguments between Danny and I on this issue can be taken into PM.
Since nothing would be conjured for a full round anyway, he and I have plenty of time to discuss should he wish to.
GM.Boldr |
After discussion with Danny I will admit my error in spacing. I was thinking the 10' template for reach, which of course acts differently on the diagonal. Afficus would have moved first, and then cast. Since that's the case, he wouldn't have needed to concentrate and his spell is now in the process of being cast.
I apologize for the confusion Danny.

The huge water elemental lets go of Denbora. Gunari desperately tries to move the Swan under Denbora's falling path. It looks like Denbora is about to slam into the jagged and dangerous rocks at the base of the waterfall, but Gunari's assistance means the boat instead is directly under the falling Gnome's path. He slams into the deck hard, buckling some of the boards, but appears to avoided a good amount of the damage.

Gunari and Denbora spend the round healing themselves in the spray at the bottom of the pool.
Afficus's bats appear with a demonic "poof". They swarm the elemental but none successfully hit the creature. Two of the bats cannot hover and begin to fly. The elemental slams into the top left bat nearly taking it out in a single hit. Afficus' first scorching ray flies wide and connects with nothing but air, while the second blasts into the water elemental who appears to take full damage from the attack. The elemental appears to be unable to strike at Afficus' ranged attacks within his reach; however, the elemental also now appears to know to never let that happen again.

Lightfoot Raven |
Raven curses the elemental and tries again to stab it.
Attack: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (8) + 16 = 24
Damage: 1d8 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16
Attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26
Damage: 1d8 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15
GM.Boldr |
Raven kills the elemental with the second stab (which is a good thing).
Combat over.
The bats bring up the survivors from down below. The door remains open. On the far side of the 15' room lies a huge set of closed double doors.
Kain Highwind |
"Do we have any of those cure serious wound potions left?"
I think we have 4 left. I am gonna pop two of them
He drinks a pair
CSW: 3d8 + 5 ⇒ (7, 6, 4) + 5 = 22
CSW: 3d8 + 5 ⇒ (3, 7, 3) + 5 = 18
and two charges off his wand
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 still down 26

Map is updated to Slide 1 as well.
Kain remembers correctly that there were four potions remaining. There are now two. The bats disappear.
