In my hurry to see if Valik tripped the advancing thug with an AoO, I failed to realize that Zeno provoked an attack of opportunity when he fired at Shadow Orchid. I'll take that now.

Right before Zeno shoots his bow, the thug south of him takes an opportunity attack with a kukri that completely misses.

Quiella also hits the bald thug as he advances across the room, so that when he hits the bottom of the pit, he falls unconscious. The gnome paladin then advances on Shadow Orchid and strikes her again with her greatsword.

Valik moves into the northeast corner of the room and prepares to strike anyone that gets close to him.

Vailis summons an earth elemental that proceeds to slam the old elf lady.

Melufiuos stabs Shadow Orchid with a double electrified rapier and with a thud she collapses dead to the ground.

Ophelia places herself in a defensive posture to avoid any potential rogue style attacks.

Apparently not just in it for the money, the remaining thug on the surface attacks the unarmored Zeno again, but the nimble archer wizard dodges the attack.

The two thugs in the pit attempt to climb out, but they both fall to the bottom, one of them losing his minor progress up the walls.

My apologies in the delay in posting.

Vailis, although it's not represented on the map, the floor is made of wooden timbers so the earth elemental cannot earth glide through them. My apologies for not making that clear earlier, but I didn't realize at the time that that detail would matter.

Also, there is a door between the bearded enemy and the outside, so if the elemental were to burrow there to attack, it would have to take a move action to open the door first.

While Vailis' earth elemental decides what to do, the summoner attempts to intimidate the two enemies in the pit. What effect his voice has on them is unknown as no one can see them from their positions 30 feet below the floor.

Valik determines that Shadow Orchid does look very dead and so he repositions himself back with the group.

Zeno successfully casts a spell defensively, and touches the enemy next to him. Although the thug seems slightly more wobbly than before, it would appear he resists the worst of the spell.

Quiella switches to a reach weapon while carefully putting her sword away.

Melufiuos draws his wand of True Strike and uses it to guarantee his rapier hits the bearded enemy next to him.

GM Screen:

Fort Save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

Vailis can let me know what he wants to do with his earth elemental. Ophelia is also still up.

Gamemaster | CC Map | S4 Map

Okay, to keep this train moving, I'm going to have Vailis' elemental and Ophelia take full defensive actions. The battle has swung in your favor, so it shouldn't be a major detriment to skip them this time.

Unsure of what to do with no space to attack the bearded thug and not seeing the ones in the pit, the earth elemental looks around confused for a few seconds.

Ophelia continues her defensive posture to protect herself from the thug's attacks.

The bearded thug attacks Zeno again with his kukri and the strike is another miss.

Whatever the thugs are doing in the pit is unknown as no one can see them.

Quiella swings her hammer at the beared thug and hits him in the shoulders. I took into account the -4 from cover and it still hit.

Zeno switches to his own personal kukri, but the slash of his weapon is dodged by the bearded thug.

Vailis, with the elemental's speed of 20', it'll take a double move for it to engage the enemies.

Vailis' earth elemental moves to the pit and slides down to place itself in range to attack. The summoner then attempts to demoralize the pit thugs again, to an unknown level of success.

Melufiuos attacks the guy next to him with the help of his wand of True Strike. The successful hit downs the bearded thug.

Valik readies himself to punch any enemies that might appear.

Ophelia is up, I'll give her until tomorrow before botting again. The only enemies remaining are the ones in the pit. Although a nice channel would wake up the bearded one.

Zeno, the enemies are 30 feet down, you can only see them if you move to the edge of the pit, which would put you in danger of falling inside of it. Let me know what you want to do with this information in mind. You can keep the same rolls regardless. Also, I believe arrows are only retrievable if they do not hit, but I'll need to double check that.

Valik and Quiella wait on the ground level for another danger to appear and/or the magical pit to end.

In that case, I'll stay just outside the 'event horizon' and ready to shoot when they pop up again.

Okay, to expedite things, I'll assume everyone delays until the pit goes away.

The next round in the pit, the headbanded thug slices into the elemental, only to get hit slammed hard in return. The elemental does not make a successful cleave attack.

After that, both thugs cut into the elemental, but it cleaves to hit them both. This knocks out the thug with the headband.

The remaining thug makes another successful hit after that, and so does the elemental which lays the thug down low as the pit dismisses itself.

Searching the bodies, you find no items on the body of Shadow Orchid, while the four thugs have 2 tanglefoot bags, 4 suits of lamellar cuirass armor, 4 masterwork kukris, 4 light crossbow with 80 bolts, 4 magical amulets, 4 magical cloaks, and 84 gp.

Identifying Amulets, Detect Magic + Spellcraft DC 20:

They are all Amulets of Natural Armor +1.

Identifying Cloaks, Detect Magic + Spellcraft DC 20:

Moving onto the second floor, you discover more shelves and tables of books, but also four rolled-up sleeping mats lying in the northeast corner of the room, all in a neatly stacked pile. A small table next to the mats has a lantern and a few books on it. Nothing that corresponds with the description of the Abysium Codex is found in the room.

Finally making your way to the third floor, you find bookshelves cover the east and west walls and a table piled with more books sits in the middle of the room between two more bookshelves. A large glass display case set in the center of the western bookshelf holds a great tome made of strange blue-green metal plates. Under the northern bookshelf you also locate a cot, under which sits a small locked brass chest.

The map has been updated, please click 'S4 Map' under my alias to access it. I took the liberty of moving you all to the third floor, if you'd prefer to stay on a earlier floor, feel free to move yourself back.

Quiella already has gear better than those two items, so she doesn't need either of them

Quiella points at the book in the case. "Could that be it? Mel, do you think there are traps on there? Or on the other chest there?"

Zeno will take both an amulet and a cloak.

I'm assuming by 'books' that Mel meant 'cloaks.'

Also, the book in the display case matches the description you were given of the Abysium Codex.

Taking two minutes to thoroughly check the glass display check, Melufiuos does indeed find a cleverly hidden guillotine trap set into the ceiling. He also notes a particular book from an adjacent bookshelf whose spine appears much more worn than its neighboring books. He thinks he can probably bypass the trap by removing the book from the shelf.

Valium! Stupid autocorrect! :)

Mel takes and dons one each of the amulets and cloaks, if there are any left, as he waits for everyone else to choose first.

He also hands Quiella his wand, "Fix him up before we head up the stairs."

Upstairs, before pulling out the worn book to disable the trap, he does a quick scan with detect magic.

If we have time, he'll also take 20 to look for traps on the bed and brass chest (or were they included in the first check?). "Maybe there are gloves or something in there to make carrying that book safer?"

Gamemaster | CC Map | S4 Map

After donning a cloak and amulet as well as offering his wand to heal Vailis, Melufiuos scans the room with Detect Magic to learn that the book composed of blue-green metal plates is magical. In case you ask, I'm not entirely sure what the school the aura is, since there isn't a full write up on it.

Taking another two minutes to check the area around the brass chest, Melufiuos doesn't find any other traps but he does locate a key in a hollowed out book on the western bookshelf.

There is no lock on the glass display case, but there is one on the brass chest.

The metal plate book is completely unaffected by Vailis' Mage Hand.

Melufiuos opens the brass chest to reveal a magical potion, a magical set of bracers, and a magical gem. It also holds a parchment letter and a small black calfskin ledger.

The letter, written in the Elven tongue, is dated 2 months ago and appears to be from a man named Ascalar Vruul, a silver agent of the Aspis Consortium. The letter describes the consortium’s need of the Abysium Codex so they can access the Hao Jin Tapestry, which they have not been able to do on their own since losing the Ruby Phoenix Tournament. The letter cites the two organizations’ alliance during the tournament as the reason to cooperate, and threatens that not complying will result in the Consortium taking “other actions” and cutting the Golden League out of the resulting profits.

The ledger, also written in Elven, appears to be a meticulous and extensive catalog of criminal exploits dating back nearly three centuries.

Knowledge (local) DC 15 in regards to the ledger:

You identify this book as Shadow Orchid’s infamous Black Ledger. Undoubtedly, many of the assassinations, thefts, and acts of extortion and bribery detailed in this ledger would link Shadow Orchid and the Golden League with numerous governments and powerful organizations throughout Tian Xia and the Inner Sea. If this information were made public, it could be severely damaging to any of the groups linked to it.

Identifying Potion, Spellcraft or Perception DC 18:

It's a potion of Cure Moderate Wounds.

Identifying Bracers, Spellcraft DC 22:

They are Bracers of Armor +2.

Identifying Gem, Spellcraft DC 26:

It's an Air Elemental Gem.

So, who's picking up the book?
