Baldwyn Doucas
|
Now that the casters have gone, Baldwyn steps in by Shandor and swings at the construct.
1d12 + 14 ⇒ (7) + 14 = 21 Bludgeoning damage
| DM Ranginui |
As quickly as the combat started, the battle is won as Baldwyn's lucern hammer smashes the burning wax golem into a pile of gooey remains.
As the six have a moment to let the adrenaline flow from their body and look around, they see the candles in the shop are burning low, and have not been replaced in some time. The wax overflows from the countertop and onto the floor. A room lies to the east.
Guilford Baldwin
|
"Well struck Baldwyn, well struck indeed! Now, shall we investigate the next room? I'll be only too glad to get the door again, if you like."
Guilford inspects the door to see if there are any traps or dangers.

Baldwyn and Guilford hear what sounds, very faintly, like sobbing. It seems to be coming from below their feet, perhaps on the floor below.
| DM Ranginui |
There are no stairs in the front room, but you push through a door into the bedroom. A chandler’s working clothes lie scattered around this simple room, and a mattress lies along the wall. Stacks of ledgers block access to the wardrobe. A small strongbox is under the bed, and there is a trapdoor in the corner.
Leastrie Oakenleaf
|
With a chagrin look on his face, Leastrie enters the building with the others.
Straining to hear, the elf shrugs. "I don't know if I hear it. Below you say?"
Scanning the room for traps or alarms, Leastrie moves toward the ledgers and begins to thumb through them.
| DM Ranginui |
The ledgers are singularly unexciting reading, except for the queer fact that they seem to be lacking entries for the past two weeks.
Leastrie Oakenleaf
|
Leastrie frowns. "Odd...there are no entries from the last two weeks. This doesn't bode well I'd say."
Padding over to the trapdoor. Leastrie once again listens and checks for traps.
Guilford Baldwin
|
"Well, I suppose I'd better have a look then."
Guilford casts detect magic and examines the runes using his arcane training.
or take 10 for a 19 if I can.
Guilford Baldwin
|
"There is some sort of evocation placed upon that door. Possibly elemental in nature. Evocation means it's likely meant to harm someone who tampers with it. Can we trigger it from a distnace, I wonder?"
Guilford Baldwin
|
Uh...so I can acutally do just what I suggested. *facepalm*
"Baldwyn, you're a genius! I have got just the spell prepared, if this trapdoor isn't locked that is. Everyone stay out of this room!"
Once everyone has moved Guilford will position himself in the southwestern corner of the bedroom and cast open/close on the trap door to try opening it.
| DM Ranginui |
Fortune doubly smiles upon Guilford and Baldwyn: once, as the trapdoor has no lock upon it, and twice as a bolt of lightning leaps directly south from the trapdoor, burning a mark in the wall.
The door is open, and the sobbing can be heard more clearly. The voice sounds like that of a young child.
Shandor "The Beast"
|
Shandor expects a lost soul to be found down there, and has little interest in that. He prefers watching the party's backs, staying in the shadowy spots of the chandlery for now and using all his senses to try and detect the lurker without relying on sight.
Chuurock Bin Ausk
|
The half-orc moves towards the trapdoor and calls down into the opening. "Are you alright in there? Can you move or do we need to go down there and release you?" Realizing what Baldwyn's doing as he speaks, Chuurock shrugs and moves to follow him down.
| DM Ranginui |
Baldwyn sheathes the magical hammer and quickly climbs down the ladder. He turns around to see a storeroom piled high with crates of candles and packing materials. In the center lies the dead body of an adult woman, her throat burst in a bloody mess and still steaming in the cool night air. Two semi-translucent shadowy figures turn to Baldwyn with bright, hateful eyes. They hiss and start to move towards the unfortunate man-at-arms.

Baldwyn Doucas
|
Awwww, I have to sheath it? I had intended to have it in one hand. Can't wield it one-handed, but can carry.
Baldwyn calls up "Shadows!" before sidling over away from the ladder. He draws his magical hammer and swings at the closest shadow.
1d12 + 14 ⇒ (11) + 14 = 25 Magical bludgeoning
| DM Ranginui |
The magical energy of the hammer makes bright blue sparks as it carves into the incorporeal substance of the shadow. The creature hovers close and strikes out at Baldwyn.
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
1d6 ⇒ 5
However, with its essence disrupted by the magic of the hammer, the creature cannot seem bring its unearthly essence to bear upon Baldwyn.

Shandor "The Beast"
|
Shandor moves closer to the trap door and crouches there in order to catch glimpse of one of the shadows. He casts a spell and missiles of pure force surge from his fingers to strike the closest creature, probably the one Baldwyn already hit.
| DM Ranginui |
Streaking from the fingertips of Shandor are three bright points of white energy. They tear through one of shadows and it disperses into nothingness.
The other shadow hungrily moves up to steal Baldwyn's essence.

Kris hangs over the lip of the trapdoor, seeing the creature. She gives it a dead stare, "Creature of darkness, break free of your hunger and join me."

"It will listen to me, at least for a day. I could explain in detail, but I believe there is a child down there." She gets out of the trapdoor and gestures the undead up to her (unless its too bright up here), "Shadow, to me. We'll wait up here; no need to show a child their parents' killer."

Baldwyn discovers the incorporeal cannot be tripped
Upon closer inspection the dead woman wears a heavy garb, splattered in multiple places with multicolored wax. Various tools are stuffed into her waistband. Perhaps this woman was Catalina, the oft-mentioned chandler.
An everburning torch lies by her side, a ring is on her right ring finger, and two potions poke out of her pockets.
Baldwyn Doucas
|
Baldwyn calls to the child through the door, feeling a little worse for wear with the touch of that shadow. "It's okay, we ain't gonna hurt ya." He looks for something to cover the body with. For the child's sake...
Guilford Baldwin
|
"I'll join you Leastrie. Let's have a look at this poor woman's potions while we're here."
