O.O
Well that is entirely unfair, sneaking limitations into the flavor text, not to mention limiting it to non-exotic weapons. And non-masterwork too! (I mean seriously, who turns a non-masterwork item into an heirloom anyway?)
I really hate wasting a whole feat on something so stupidly minute as a proficiency for a single weapon. Those are probably the weakest feats in the whole game, the lowest in value compared to what is gained from others.
I'll go wandering around the lists, I'll probably just change the weapon to a martial of some sort. After I find out who chose non-exotic non-masterwork limitations and put them only in the flavor text, then I'll put their pictures on my dartboard. }:(
Hmm, puffing smoke aside, I understood not giving a free item to the player, but choosing to limit the choice of weapon by exotic vs martial/simple seems pointless and attributes far too much value to exotic weapons that most of them don't deserve. Being exotic isn't even about balance, it isn't like exotic weapons are supposed to be superior to other weapons (though some are of course), the point of simple, martial, exotic is about how common training is for a weapon. Simple weapons are everywhere and even common folk can get such training, martial are the standard weapons of military types, and exotic are fringe weapons that few practice. Thus a feat giving access to all exotics should be equal to a feat giving access to a group of martials as the martials will be found more often. But they aren't treating it like that and it is irritating.
Limiting to non-masterwork only makes sense if it gives you the item for free, but since it can't do that, it is a pointless and a frivolous limitation.
I'll look around and figure something out.

There was an errata for Adventurer's Armory released that had limited heirloom weapon to simple and martial weapons, removed the masterwork quality and removed the +1 to attack. You can find the errata here at this link.

This happens from time to time with pathfinder. I believe by PFS rules you would be allowed to change the trait if you wish.

Except the point is to have a decent weapon usable with weapon finesse. I admit an elven curve blade is more than decent, but I haven't found any other weapons that are finessable and deal slashing. And even the options available for piercing are at best a d4, not to mention lacking the cool factor.
It completely removes my usefulness in melee until I gain a level, at least without breaking into my spells which are supposed to be primarily support not damage. I might as well swap out for a d3 cantrip, it would be better than a d4 melee only weapon.
I could go for a bow I guess, but that is still a radical change in character.
GM Aerondor

Rapier is 1d6, and uses finesse. Nice crit range too.
I can see why they made it non exotic though, as that would be the same as a feat, and traits are supposed to be worth only around half a feat. Though both feat and trait inflation happens over time.
Naomi Hiddenleaf
|
It is still the same as a feat as gaining proficiency with a single martial weapon is a feat. So feat-wise, proficiency with any martial or exotic weapon is the same. However, that seems weak for a feat to me. Compared to other feats, a proficiency feat should allow entire groups, such as heavy blades, instead of individual weapons. At a minimum.
Honestly, it is like mixed messages. There are many aspects that say the difference between simple, martial, and exotic are mostly just reflections of rp fluff rather than balance issues, but you get occasional tidbits like this where some individual came later and seemed to treat the groups as having different value. I.E. the feat for simple weapons grants all simple weapons, as though they are near worthless next to martial and exotic.
Crossbows are less intuitive than bows and more difficult in some ways, being more mechanically involved than bows. Yet the easy to learn bows are martial and the more involved crossbows are simple. Clearly, ease of learning and utility are not factors in placing a weapon in a category.
Then you have katanas that are now exotic rather than reskins of masterwork bastard swords. Why?
It is like certain people thought exotics were supposed to be better options and started changing things to make that true.
Meanwhile, other things are ignored, like weapon finesse options. Elven curve blade is two dice sizes more damaging than the next best finessable weapon. That is a big gap.
Also, rapier is d4 for a small tiefling. And piercing. And common.

So zombies came from both outside the building and inside the building? At the same time? And saying we only need to worry about these four zombies is a cheat. Those guards are a natural strategic element, either to join up with, or to 'push' the zombies into, or one of several other options depending on how they perceive our group. They also potentially block one of the exits. Which can block us as much as zombies. That doesn't even include roleplaying concerns should someone decide to try to organize say a handful of the audience into protecting the kids, or trying to focus on opening a single exit.
In any case, what can I see through the doors to those rooms you covered on the map, or did the zombies close the doors behind them? What about up, the ceiling? Are there rafters, walkways for lights, vents, open areas above the other rooms?
Stepping back is about developing a plan. Details are needed. I haven't avoided death when my even my overoptimized companions fell by playing rush straight into "I swing my sword." The environment is a vastly important tactical tool.
I just noticed, Silent Image doesn't say the 10' cubes need to be contiguous. Handy that will be.

The zombies came through the inner doors of the building. Those doors were shut at the start of the performance...before the zombies barged in.
For the moment the nobles and commoners seem to have the immediate threats in their area more or less under control, with most of the zombies down, but at the same time, many of the people killed outright or badly wounded as well.
In terms of size, technically each square is a 10' area, but in PBP and without re scaling the map, that makes life pretty difficult for players (not characters) as icons get to be too small.
If you want to join up with the others once the first rush of zombies is over, that is certainly an option for you. They are all too busy at the moment with the last of their own undead.
The interior of the House of the Immortal Son is full of expensive carpets, excessive gilding, and ridiculously large candelabras and chandeliers. Looking up at the roof it is a complicated piece of stone statuary that replicates the holy symbol of Aroden, a steady winged eye gazing forever toward the heavens.
The other doors that you can see through I've now "opened" on the map. No obvious signs of massed zombies there, and people are starting to stream through them towards towards the outside doors.
--
As for the weapon, if this were a home game, I'd tend to agree.
That said, mechanically there is a progression from simple to martial to exotic.
Simple tend to be 1d6 for a one handed, and x2/20
Martial are a couple of steps up with 1d8 and x2/19-20 (or x3 and 20)
Exotic move up again to 1d10 and x2/19-20
Where a basic damage die is higher or lower, the crit range or multiplier typically moves a step as well. Yes, it varies, but that is the "baseline".
---
As a side note, I think in PFS your tiefling has to be normal sized not small unless you have some kind of alternate racial trait that allows small. Sorry to be the rules lawyer here, but its better working these things out at first level than having a GM not allow you to play the character at higher levels.

I don't mind the rules lawyering, just would have been nice if it was figured out the first time before the character really became established. I still haven't figured out the various pfs limitations, of course this is only my second dealing with pfs anything, well third, but the first was a convention pregen nigh a decade ago.
Mechanically, that progression is mostly supplemental. Originally, odd abilities were the hallmark of exotics, such as double weapons allowing the advantages of two weapon fighting but yet can still use one hand for spells or potions without dropping a weapon, or a whip which has awesome reach. Or flavor options, but really, proficiencies are treated extremely cheap. If they actually considered each individual weapon outside simple as worth a feat, then any class with all martial weapons would outshine every other class by orders of magnitude, and would get more "feat equivalent abilities" every time a new martial was included. But not only does play show that to be far from the actual case, but they don't really try to balance how many proficiencies a class grants beyond, next to none, simple, martial, or special selection. But they make it insanely expensive to expand proficiency beyond what the class grants. And they treat any proficiency outside simple exactly the same, except in this case as far as I know. Going other routes itnis exactly the same to get a martial as to get an exotic, but they want to arbitrarily put a limit here that doesn't apply elsewhere.
So we can try evacuating people to the outside, which is a good idea rp-wise. Let me look at the map.

Hey Grim, the zombie is inside a square block of wall.
Oh, and even if you disbelieve it (dc 12), it still provides total concealment.
Edit; the zombie is in a 5' square wall on all sides. There is no line of sight. It is effectively invisible, hidden behind a wall.
This is a calm moment in the combat. Position yourselves, ready actions, etc.
Aarion Belanor

hmm.... that's interesting.
You would think that all illusion based spells would have little to know effect on a mindless undead. Unless there is an errata out there saying otherwise, I don't see anything in the definition of figment that indicates that it is mind affecting. I'm interested to see what effect it will have on a zombie.
Thanks for pointing that out.
GM Aerondor
|
Undead are affected by figments, but not some other illusions. This kind of makes sense as figments create something that fools the senses, think of them like a hologram. The illusionist doesn't attack the undeads mind, they just create the appearance of something that isn't there.
Given the zombie is pretty mindless while the wall is up its not going to bother to try and hammer at it (which a normal creature might do), so you can all position yourself as you like.
If you want to try and bash the wall, you get a save against the spell, but at that stage it will react.
Given all those great attack rolls, if Naomi is willing, I'll take them as happening after you are in position and she drops the wall. The damage would be likely enough to drop the zombie.
Naomi Hiddenleaf
|
I'm willing. She intends on selectively exposing each zombie in turn to a group with readied actions. Yes, including the ones elsewhere, which I hope those guards appreciate. That important person may be a help to us later. Even if only in roleplay and not in the scenario plot.
Xuan Fung

Does Fung have any luck looking for arms and armor for Grimaldus?
GM Aerondor
|
Not really, the zombies are not armed. There are a few odd weapons floating around, but most people don't go to the theatre armed. What few weapons were dropped have been picked up by other people to arm themselves.
Naomi Hiddenleaf

Hey, burning the door is just one option, but locking magic doesn't protect the door from burning. That would require other kinds of magic in addition to the locking magic. Also, Naomi is resistant to fire, so it doesn't bother her.
GM Aerondor

Just a friendly reminder that the point of going to the theatre was to get into the building so you could explore for the missing pathfinder. Opening the doors (if it possible) is likely to see a mass of guards etc converge on the building to get everyone out of it.

Haha! Yes, now that we're in the building, we need to find a passage underground to the dig site. Probably in one of the rooms that are still covered. But something's happening at the violet corridor! Likely not good news for the snobbish noble who snubbed Naomi. Retribution, I guess. :)

just for my sanity, I have a char portfolio (signed by some illustrious paizo / former paizo members) if I want to use it for a reroll, you want to see a picture of it?

Problem, Naomi doesn't consider sacrificing all the random people in here for a mission about a single individual to be an acceptable thing.
Solution, when the authorities first arrive, there will be plenty of chaos at the beginning before they can impose their ordered search, which we can use to slip into the back rooms to find what we need.Or if that fails, we sneak back in later.

No need to see photos of folios or whatever, I tend to trust people who say they have them.
@Naomi very paladinic! I applaud your character.

I figured out how I will handle the trait issue. I will take the Quick learner trait. After the first attack with a non-proficient weapon, the penalty for non-proficiency reduces to only -2. So with my elven curve blade, after the first attack I'll still get a +2 net bonus, which is better than switching to another weapon.
GM Aerondor
|
That sounds like a good way to do it. Flexible for when other interesting items turn up in play too. I assume you will replace heirloom weapon with that, as you can't have two traits of the same type and they are both equipment traits.
Remember that you are expected to own the product that each of your races, feats, traits, classes, archetypes, spells and equipment come from. I probably forgot something there. hmm, favored class bonuses?
I'm not one to normally check this myself, especially in a PBP format, but if you are going to play Naomi around a table, you're expected to provide a copy of the resource for the GM to reference and inspect.

Wood tipped blunt arrows? Just how many ridiculous notions are there in this game?
Even a blunt arrow needs the weight of an arrowhead to fly proper. Further, if you have blunt arrows, it is for a reason, and having a broader tip than the shaft is needed to spread the impact out (which is what makes it blunt). It is silly to say that blunt arrows are only wood tipped.
Adding that to my list of things to fix.
Aarion Belanor
|
I agree with you Naomi. Hero Labs allows the arrows to be made of cold-iron, so I had assumed that they where metal tips and could be affected by special materials the same as a normal arrow, but it specifically calls out that they are wood tips. I could see this becoming a problem in the future, so I chose to correct the misunderstanding. Below is the description.
Note that some times paizo does things like this to maintain balance. For example, If I could use a cold-iron blunt tipped arrow coated in (silver) weapon blanch, I would eliminate three different types of damage reduction with this simple inexpensive item.
These arrows have rounded wooden tips that deal bludgeoning damage rather than piercing. An archer can use a blunt arrow to deal nonlethal damage (at the normal –4 attack penalty for using a lethal weapon to deal nonlethal damage).

Lol, I get it now. Strangely I thought the map just hadn't been updated yet. I somehow missed those three and thought the newcomers came from the north entrance to the building, not a door to the backstage area.
Slight update to where Naomi moved too since the edge of the stage no longer makes sense.

If someone could please put me in the square that says "2a" diagonally down and left from where I am please, and put Teak just behind me.
And I really hope that a pc firing the first shot doesn't royally mess things up. Why did you fire the first shot anyway?

Thanks for the game everyone. I know that one is a bit of a combat fest, careering from one battle to the next.
Chronicles are now up (and also linked above).
I'll probably do the formal reporting tonight. Please do check the chronicles. I'd love to say I made a purposeful mistake in one to get you to check them... but no. Any mistakes are genuine but easily fixed - once you let me know about them.
Xuan Fung

Yay! My first pbp PFS game!
Thanks Aerondor. Even though it was a combat fest, it was definitely fun. I loved the nobles! (Not Fung though. Can't please them all.)
And thanks, everyone for the game!

Thanks for running the game GM Aeronder. It was a lot of fun and I look forward to playing with you in the Scions of the Sky Key. Oleander Looks like a fun character.
GM Aerondor

It ran quickly. But with Aarion at level 3 and with a good AC, a number of the battles were not quite as challenging as it would be for four first level characters.
I find most PBP scenarios take around 40 days (have a look at my signup sheet, on the "completed tab" for an idea. But they can vary quite considerably. Some typically run much faster - The confirmation for example often only takes two or three weeks. Others can run much longer.
Brother Grimaldus
|
That ran quicker then expected... I thought we had more to do and more investigation...
I did feel a bit useless and didn't want to use all the channels since I thought we had an investigation to take care off. Oh well :P
Thanks for running it Aerondor!
Aarion Belanor
|
I think that would have went a lot different if we had decided to leave most our gear behind in order to look correct. I know I was ready to head out without gear. )
Naomi Hiddenleaf
|
I also felt like there would have been more to investigate.
Oh,the end seemed a little sudden, for example, did my little burning attempt succeed in gaining the attention of those outside?
GM Aerondor
|
The burning caused consternation among the Taldane constabulary!
Various priests were summoned in case (as theater was as old temple to Aroden) the first god of humanity had returned.
Alas that was not to be.
The nobles who survived (quite a few in the end thanks to your heroic actions) dine out for months on grisly zombie tales!
GM Aerondor
|
Fung and Aarion, corrected chronicles have been uploaded for you.
Please check them again!
Brother Grimaldus

My chronicle sheet is almost entirely blank. No gm info except name.
I can see yours fully filled in (not sure if Aerondor fixed anything or not)
