PFS # 6-09: By Way of Bloodcove, with GM Pendrak (Inactive)

Game Master Pendrak

A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 3–7.

For centuries the city of Bloodcove has controlled access to the invaluable Vanji River, and for nearly as long, the Aspis Consortium has controlled Bloodcove. If the Pathfinder Society is to move the equipment and personnel it needs into the Mwangi Expanse, it needs a reliable means of smuggling resources through this unforgiving settlement operated by its enemies. It’s up to the PCs to establish a backdoor through Bloodcove—all without being caught by Aspis agents.

Content in “By Way of Bloodcove” also contributes directly to the ongoing storyline of the Exchange faction.

The rock monster suddenly becomes more rock like as it is grasped by a slow spell. Luckily, the elemental only attacks once anyway. It then tries to slam the robot.

I believe Woodthorne also needs to make a DC 10 Acrobatics check to move at half speed through Velinov's grease spell. Failure means he stops when he enters the effect, and failure by 5 or more means he falls prone. Either way it will slow him down slightly as well.

The robot ducks under the elemental's punch yet again, and for a moment it pumps its fists ups and down in the air, in a sort of victorious gesture before resuming it's fighting stance.

When Woodthorne runs by, the robot jabs out with an elbow, painfully smashing him in the knee.

Kahwen doesn't quite catch what Na'alu says but he managed, just barely, to avoid being affected by his slow spell. Which is good. Because Kahwen likes being fast.

Instead of just stepping up to the Consortium agent, he cuts around him, keeping out of his reach to come at him from another angle and cut off his paths of escape.

"I'm no good at wrestling, Friend Haska! But I am good at cutting," he says as he takes a swing with his blade.

He murmurs his spell, tosses a glowing, pea-sized bead over the heads of Kahwen and Woodthorne, and smiles, as the bead explodes into a huge ball of fire.

"Let's try blinding."

He pulls out some sort of powder from his pouch and throws it into the air near Kahwen, speaking arcane words as he does so. The tengu and the surrounding area are dusted with a cloud of golden particles.

Yes, she should get another full action. That said, the shot you just readied is going to hit and finish off Na'alu. Which kind of puts us in a strange position, because in theory, had that been your action on Round 4 you would put Na'alu down before he even got the opportunity to cast glitterdust.

So, in fairness, I'm going to say that basically Thaia got the shot off on Na'alu just as he cast the spell. Kahwen was blinded for only a second, and then shrugged it off. Kahwen can either keep his action to go into crane stance, or do something else if you prefer. Thaia can take a shot at the robot, or whatever, for her Round 5 action.

Kahwen closes his eyes as he is cascaded with fairy dust. He rubs them, and opens them, after hearing Thaia's boomstick, and realizes he can see after all. He sees Na'alu laying unconscious before him, bleeding from a gaping gunshot wound to the chest.

The tributary here is about 30 feet wide and 10 feet deep at its center. The water runs swiftly but has few rapids, requiring a successful DC 15 Swim check to traverse. The bridge has fairly low sides, providing little cover.

It looks like Nigel is correct and the cloud was a bit small, which has been corrected.

Unsurprisingly the construct's morale, if such a thing exists, does not seem to have been affected in the slightest by the demise of its master. It turns its attention to the newly summoned air elemental. Typically of the metallic being, it misses the first time but hits the second.

A pathfinder's work is never done. Kahwen had hoped that Na'alu falling would make the mechano man stop, too. It was clear that was not going to be the case and that it was going to keep fighting.

He rushes to the aid of the lightning elemental. "This is a new one, isn't it Friend Nigel? I like it!" he calls out. There's no reason not to chat while fighting, is there?

He has to be careful as he gets close though, the ground here is quite slick.

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (15) + 13 = 28

Not so slick for him, though...

He takes a swing, finding a moment when the thing is not paying attention to him while fending off the lightning elemental to strike a precise blow.

The construct remains evasive, managing to avoid the barrage of attacks the elemental, Kahwen, and Thaia send at it. It remains consistent as well, missing once and hitting on its second try, sending off sparks of electricity from the elemental as the punch lands squarely in the outsider's face.

However, the cloud of malodorous vapor finally dissipates at this point, opening the battlefield significantly.

Kahwen is correct. This time, he does get the construct. Timing his blow perfectly when the thing is attacking, he slices the metallic man's head clean off. Smoke pours out of its neck hole, and it jerks and convulses. For a moment it begins to do its little victory dance with fist pumping, but it gradually slows and slows until the fists stop completely, and it falls over with a KLUNK.

Victory at last! Other than a little wrap-up, that pretty much brings us not only to the end of combat but the end of the scenario.

As the group searches Na'alu, they find, in addition to his gear, several encoded messages.

Linguistics DC 21:

Na’alu is a double agent, working for the Apsis Consortium but also another group. These messages come from an organization called the Technic League, a powerful cabal of scholars and spellcasters who run much of Numeria (a land strewn with strange technology that fell from the sky millennia ago) and jealously hoard any of its secrets. The messages are instructions to procure information regarding the Aspis Consortium’s upcoming expedition, and a warning that the Pathfinder Society is showing increased interest in the Mwangi Expanse.

Na'alu's Gear:

Two different potions and some sort of pharmeceutical
A masterwork quarterstaff
a magic cloak and a magic ring
a spellbook
diamond dust worth 250 gp
50 gp

The magic items can be identified using detect magic and Spellcraft.

Potion 1, DC 18:

potion of cure moderate wounds

Potion 2, DC 18:

potion of invisibility

Cloak, DC 18:

cloak of resistance +1

Ring, DC 18:

ring of protection +1

Knowledge (engingeering) or Heal DC 20, to identify the pharmaceutical:

This is a vial of a drug called Vive. Vive revitalizes the body at the cost of mental acuity. This pharmaceutical has an onset time of 1 minute. It eliminates fatigue and exhaustion and heals 1d4 points of ability damage to a physical ability score (Strength, Dexterity, or Constitution) of the target's choice. The first dose taken in a 24-hour period deals 1d2 points of ability damage to Intelligence and Wisdom; additional doses in that period deal 1d4 points of ability damage instead. Vive can be resisted with a successful DC 12 Fortitude saving throw.

It has to be Linguistics in this case, because it is a code instead of another language. Comprehend languages "does not decipher codes or reveal messages concealed in otherwise normal text."

"Huzzah!" Kahwen declares, brandishing his sword overhead as he cuts the creature down.

He helps search Na'alu's body but is also quick to urge people to continue on their way. Villain though he may be, the man they just killed in self defense is still well respected in Bloodcove and has plenty of allies. Lingering is an invitation for trouble.

Got not skills to help out here.

The Pathfinders move out, soon leaving Bloodcove far behind, traveling overland back to Nantambu over the course of a few days. Thaia is able to decipher the code as they travel. They return to the hot basement of Sharrowsmith's secret Pathfinder lodge, where this all started.

Aya Allahe is please to see them, and listens carefully as they recount the tale of their adventure.

"This report confirms my suspicions that the Aspis is planning to investigate the same area that Venture-Captain Sharrowsmith was researching before his party’s disappearance. The intelligence also reveals that the Consortium is sending a lot of manpower along with the expedition, including several veteran field agents with grim reputations. Those are a nasty bunch of names, the worst of the worst as the Apsis go."

"So the Technic League is involved now too? Great. That complicates things, but it is good to know."

"I'm so glad to hear you were able to sabotage the expedition. That buys us a day or two to plan our response, a commendable advantage."

"Congratulations on making that deal with Ungala. Having a reliable transport of supplies and personnel through Bloodcove greatly strengthens the Society’s position in the upcoming conflict, and a capable ally in Bloodcove is to the Society’s long-term advantage. Trade Prince Aaqir al'Hakam will be informed of your success."

"Thank you all. You did a terrific job from what I can tell. Now I must move on to the task of preparing the Society’s response to the impending confict."

Unless you have any final roleplaying you'd like to do, this concludes the session. I hope you enjoyed it. I should have the Chronicle sheets ready in a day or two.
