"Ugh, ropes. I think I prefer moping the deck," he thinks to himself as he gets ready to work. He smiles slightly when he sees Veltisiel's spell worked and then has to hide his smile when he sees the dwarf getting the whip.

Grak notices a crew member in robes and goes over to work nearby, striking up a conversation when he is able.

Grak struggles holding the ropes to control the sails. ”I don’t know about you, but I’m not made for this type of work. I’m Grak, by the way. How long you been on board?” he says to the man he suspects might be some sort of caster.

Shivikah is a tall, dark-skinned, Garundi woman. She works hard, but has little experience with work on a ship.

"Yes, I do not know of this ropes work. Hauling and pulling all day in the hot sun. Where I am from, we are smart enough to do our work in the morning and rest in the heat of the day." She finds that the ropes she has been hauling have tangled almost beyond belief.

Looks like Grak and Shivikah will be sharing some lashes this evening.

"Where I am from, we had slaves to do this kind of work. My talents are better suited for a workshop. Unfortunately, I haven't been here long enough to impress that upon the captain or his underlings. How about yourself, do you have any talents that are being wasted? It seems you are having as much luck with these ropes as I am," Grak responds.

"My talents lie more in the evaluation and training of humanoids. It is to be ironic that before being captured by Harrigan (she doesn't say the H) I was a slave trader myself. But to the strong go the spoils..."

The work of the day grinds to a close as the bell rings for the Bloody Hour.

You line up, ready to receive punishment, dinner, and your rum ration. Scourge takes the lead in your evaluations for the day.

"The cook's mate did an excellent job today of spearing turtles and turning them into dinner. Unfortunately, we have some shirkers among the swabs today. Shivikah and Grak, step up."

Unless someone wants to do something about it, Shivikah and Grak get 3 lashes each.

Grak lashes: 3d3 ⇒ (2, 2, 1) = 5 Nonlethal damage

Grak, write up your own response to that, I don't want to make assumptions.

Con DC10: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

Grak gets more anxious as the day wears on, concerned about his inevitable punishment for not being able to handle the ropes sufficiently. At the ring of the bell, he shuffles over, head down, hoping somehow that he will be forgotten and not remembering the last time he was so worn out. When his name is called, he glances up at Scourge and lets out a sigh as he walks up to receive his punishment. He grunts audibly at the first two lashings but only grimaces from the last one as he hardly noticed in comparison.

When the lashings are done and while they are waiting for their food and rum, he asks Shivikah if she is ok. "I'm not used to being on that end of the whip or so tired. I'm just glad the day is over," he says, trying to crack a smile. Before sitting down to eat, he finds a quiet place to pull out his formula book and mixes up a healing potion. "I need to figure out how to use these on others," he thinks to himself as he drinks the extract. Feeling better, he joins the others for dinner.

Ravenna is up and about as the day progresses, working hard on the decks.

Profession (sailor): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Constitution check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Exhausted by the day's work, she passes out in her hammock as soon as night falls.

Grak and Ravenna will both recover from their fatigue by getting plenty of rest.

The next day dawns without fanfare. No one interferes with your business of getting up and getting on deck. You munch a disc of hard tack and perhaps a leftover joint of turtle meat as you make your way up on deck.

"For our new recruits, we have a special task today. Narwhal tells me that there is something vicious in the bilges and it bit him yesterday, so we are sending you to clear out whatever is down there."

Regardless of your assignment, today all of the PCs are assigned to the bilges. You have a few minutes to make whatever preparations you wish.

Rat initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Ravenna initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18

Ordrax initiative: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Raush initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

You descend into the bilges, the lowest point of the hull, the bowels of the ship. Below the cargo decks, this area is full of filthy salt water. This is the worst duty on the ship, and now it is worsened by the threat of attack.

As you descend into the calf deep water, something moves against your leg. The water ripples. The bilge is filled with massive rats, their teeth clacking at you.

The rats are in the water, so they have 20% concealment against your attacks. All movement is in difficult terrain from the water, so no 5 foot steps.

I'm fast tracking this a little, making some assumptions about your actions. You are basically forced into the bilges, so I'm assuming that. Ravenna and Veltisiel can act before the Rats, then I will act, then everyone else.

I believe that everyone had the opportunity to retain one easily concealable item. Something like thieves tools or a light weapon. So you could probably have a dagger. Alternately, if you want to play in hard mode, things like hammers and other tools and belaying pins are readily available. There certainly is no need to go into combat completely empty handed.

The rats are in water, but not underwater, and are described as having 20% miss chance. I would read that to mean that the bombs work fine unless you fail the miss chance. If you fail to hit, the bomb goes in the water and causes no damage. Splash damage has a 20% chance per target to land in the water and cause no damage.

A flurry of attacks smash, stab, and crush the outsized rats. Not so much of a threat for a group of this size, though apparently they were dangerous to a single dwarven rigger. As the sounds from the melee echo around the small chamber and gradually diminish, you find yourselves in the damp, mucky bowels of the ship. Despite the unpleasant atmosphere, this is the first moment of relative peace and privacy you have had since you first woke up on the Wormwood. None of you have worked the bilges here before, but there is water at your feet, and there are pumps. It isn't hard to figure out what the order of the day is.

This is intended to be a rare moment for the group to converse, so forgive me if I leave you to yourselves for a bit.

As far as using threats and violence to get people to do things, my people are slavers by nature, so I would tend to do things the same way. And the only way the captain will be replaced is through violence, to him and anyone who follows him willingly. The question is, who among the crew are loyal to him and who would be open to change? I don't know that answer. What I do know though, is that we aren't in a position to do much equipped like this," the hobgoblin says, eyeing each of the group for a reaction.
