"Where was the bust found? Was it here all along?"

It certainly looks like it. Knowledge dungeoneering would probably tell you more.

"Yeah, it was built as part of their mausoleum. Not long before my own families one here was. We certainly put them in the shade."

Ana looks at each of the mausoleums, looking for the characteristics that cause the woman to say they were "put in the shade". What would it take for the sunset to shine on the bust? Or does she mean that Sarvios' tomb shades that of the Tullivor family?

Knowledge (Nature): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

Phooey.

"Why do the families have such mutual dislike?"

Ana:
It's fairly obvious that the Mausoleum you are stood next to now would block the sun from the other one, at least some of the time. It's physically bigger and not on the North side.

"Age old enmity. They are scum."

Zasha chuckles. "We have a friend who agrees."

Crowe scratches his head. Blood feuds between families he can understand.

Montgomery Hall:
Forgive me if I'm being pedantic. Does it appear that the Sarvios' tomb would block the sunset from reaching that of the Tullivor clan?

As she looks back and forth between the two mausoleums, Ana shakes her head. Such waste in pursuit of revenge for an act that neither side probably remembers.

Grand Lodge

Alivar looks annoyed at the woman not answering his question. "Well, as I said it is our intention to go within; what is it you seek, and what do you offer us should we obtain it for you?"

Ana:
You can't tell for sure.

The woman looks at Alivar, "Like I said, we could come to some agreement. What I want is within that tomb, yes."

What time of day is it? Morning, mid-day, evening, night?

I originally said it was just after sunset.... I will revise that to mid afternoon for the sake of ease....

Ana leaves the negotiation to those inclined to do so and walked back to the dead man, generally looking around the corpse, before she stops and looks at the ground by her feet.

Montgomery Hall:
As she walks to the body, she notes the shadow of the Sarvio tomb. She also notes the direction of her shadow, knowing that will indicate the direction of the shadows at sunset. She thinks the thanks will be given when the "last sun" falls on the bust, but doesn't want to let the assassin know and she doesn't want to wait until sunset for a bad theory.

She lacks confidence in her ability to solve problems in such smart company, so she is trying to be certain. New thoughts occur to her - can the bust be moved into the light? Or perhaps a mirror could be used to direct the failing daylight onto the bust or some part of the tomb?

Suddenly, she looks up and studies the tomb intently. If the tomb is so dangerous, how will they place the dead man's son within?

Grand Lodge

Are any of us good at searching for traps and/or detecting magic?

Ana:
It seems obvious that the Sun would shine on this place at sunset, if not for the spire of the other tomb.

The bust cannot be moved (well, not easily).

You are assuming that the trap is logical.... not necessarily a good assumption!

I know, right?

Ana shrugs and walks back to the rest of the party to listen to the discussion. She asks, in general, "Do we know what she wants yet?"

Zasha joins the small knot of adventurers. "No she hasn't told us. But I'd guess it's what we're looking for."

She glances over her shoulder at the woman. "A fight right now would be better than a fight in the crypt, but that would almost be murder."

Ana frowns, "Is she coming? I thought she would meet us later."

"I will come whenever you decide to enter. I want to see how you get in."She snears a little as she says this, despite herself.

A very good question!

I'm also a little surprised Crowe hasn't just tried to beat in the door by now... he's being unusually patient!

This whole social interaction thing has just left him bit confused.

LOL, I'm not saying that bashing stuff is the best idea....

Zasha is no help on either score. Vigilante is a rogue archetype that gives up trap abilities for big bonuses that let you play the Green Hornet. It's great in a very specific kind of campaign or as an NPC.

Alahazra has detect magic so she can scan for any magical auras

Ana sighs, "Does anyone have a mirror, then? I think I know the path. And perhaps a way around it. I don't think she would approve of the correct answer."

"Correct answer?" Se looks suspiciously at Ana, "What do you mean?"

Liberty's Edge

Female Human Percept +4, Sense Motive +4, Init +4 AC 17, FF 14, T 13 \\ HP 10/11 \\ F 1 R 4(+2 v. traps) W 1

Zasha grins. "Maybe she means that we chuck your dead body at the tomb's door tomorrow at sundown. That might earn Tullivor's thanks."

Doing her best to maintain a straight face, "And you would not approve, am I right?"

Bluff: 1d20 ⇒ 9

When the slight smile gives her away, she takes a deep breath and speaks more than her companions have heard thus far, "Think of who made the request. Would he want his kin or property destroyed? No. He wanted yours destroyed. His thanks would be in exchange for such an act. Your mausoleum shades his at sundown. I think he wanted your mausoleum to be removed and that's what the thanks would be for."

"If we can use a mirror to catch the setting sun and shine its rays on his mausoleum - specifically the bust, I think we might be able to meet the letter of the request without meeting the spirit. And you keep your family tomb intact."

"Last Sun, rather than Last Son. That does make some sense. We don't have long. I will go and get a mirror."

As the idea finally dawns on her, she becomes excited, and makes to rush off (on horse back).

Zasha sheathes her swords. "You know she's going to stab us in the back once we've found what she wants."

Great thinking, PR. Everyone check their belongings. I never carry a mirror, but my pregen might.

And look at that. Zasha does have a mirror.

Thanks. I don't know if Ana's stats reflect that kind of insight, but she's average INT and I'm not vain enough to suppose I'm better than average, so I think it works. I suspect I like puzzles much better than she does.

Ana nods at Zasha's remark. "She cannot be left alone with anyone. If she tries anything, two noble houses will lose a scion tonight."

Crowe is still wondering what the last conversation was even about. However, talk of violence piques his interest.

"Crowe will smash her with his earthbreaker. He does not trust the strange maiden. These families do not fight properly."

Grand Lodge

“Oh well done Ana,” says Alivar, grinning. “Obvious interpretation when you think about it … but I can’t claim to have done so. Well!”

Once the noblewoman has left, Alivar adds more quietly, “A mirror then – you have one you say Zasha?”

Liberty's Edge

"I do."

Zasha produces the mirror. "It's not very big. I hope we can direct enough light on Tullivor's tomb."

Time creeps forward, now at the slowest of paces.

It's easy enough to set up the mirror so that the light falls on the bust. Tracking it as the sun goes down isn't hard.

For a little while it looks like cloud cover may scupper your plan, but eventually even that moves on. As the disk of the sun begins to sink below the horizon, you hear horses hooves in the distance, and the Woman returns. She is very out of breath, and furious when she sees that her errand was unneeded.

As she begins to make a noise though, the last pink rays of the sun bounce off the mirror onto the bust, and there is an audible "click" from the door of the tomb.

perception DC15:
The door has opened a little, and is now ajar.

"Sorry. I forgot I had the mirror."

"Ha! Zasha is funny!"

Even Crowe couldn't miss that one.

Once the noblewoman has left, Alivar adds more quietly, “A mirror then – you have one you say Zasha?”

Ana blushes at the praise and studies the ground for a moment while a hand drifts to rest on Leryn's head. Quietly, she says, "Thanks. I hope it works."

Before the woman returns, Ana takes up a position where she can watch over the rest of the party, thinking to keep an eye on their temporary patron so she can't pull something on one of them. She crouches down, murmuring to her canine companion as she scratches the back of his neck and they wait.

When the door clicks, she smiles with a bit of relief. When the woman begins to say something, Ana is thankful to be behind her because the huntress cannot hide her grin.

Zasha's going to feel like a jerk if the woman is playing straight with us.

Ok, who's going inside? Marching order? Anything special you want to tell me now?

"Stand aside! Crowe will go first." Crowe unlimbers his earthbreaker.

Ana and Leryn are in back, watching the woman. Did we establish an agreement with her?

Grand Lodge

I don't believe we did make any agreement with her.

Alahazra steps up behind Crowe. Her clouded eyes seem to have no problem seeing in the darkness within the tomb.

Alivar will hang back near Ana. He'll light a torch and hold it aloft.

The mausoleum contains five sarcophagi bearing the names of the Tullivors interred within. Above Laban’s casket, a gleaming tapestry depicts the Tullivor crest and the family motto: “Never in Shadow.” The tapestry, woven with gold and silver thread.
