Turan peers into the room, then does a double take and casts a light spell on his bow. As the light floods the room before him, his fears are confirmed: a giant spider clings to his webs near the ceiling, fangs glistening and pincers moving in anticipation of its next meal.

Turan puts one of his famed arrows to use, and it slides neatly into the bulbous body of the spider.
The spider throws a web at Turan in retaliation

"Ah, I see it! But it is not the only thing that lurks in the dark...."
Xasay ducks into the room and fans his strange metal stencils like a hand of cards, isolating one from the rest and holding it against the light from the doorway.
A moment later, from out of nowhere above the spider swoops an unearthly-looking dark raptor bird!
And the puppet show begins! I conjure a shadowy Celestial Eagle that Smites Evil (I'm guessing it's not actually Evil, but in case it happens to be, add +1 to the following damage rolls) and launches a full attack. A DC 16 Will save on the spider's part will diminish the puppet to 20% reality.

"Try having about a thousand of the bastards next to your meat and two veg and see how you feel about 'em," Nikolai says, remembering the horrid turn his Confirmation took. He grimaces as Turan is coated in sticky spider silk. "Aw HELL no! I ain't getting sprayed with spider goo today!" He moves into the room, drawing his handaxe as he goes, keeping light on his feet.
I'm also moving in, going Total Defense. AC is currently 20.
Isobel the Nymph |
"Eeeeep!" Isobel screams as the gigantic spider comes into view.
"I hate spiders!"
She lobs a glob of acid at the creature, but it flies wide as she tries to hide behind Turan.

Ah, that's my first level monk....
Fauxish |
Is it reachable by melee, GM? I was envisioning it too high for us to reach for the moment.
Depends on the ceiling. When we fight we operate in 5-foot-cubes and you are allowed to touch all the adjacent cubes. If it is a 10 foot ceiling (I live in a fantasy world of 10'x10'x10' areas) then I'm good (or rather, bad). GM?
GM DevilDoc |
I apologize for not noting this earlier when I gave a description of the room. The ceilings in this area are 15 feet high, and the spider is near the ceiling, so out of reach. Fauxish, you may redo your turn. I will try to do better on room descriptions from here out. In this tower, unless I specify otherwise the ceilings are 15ft high.

So your best course of action is to help Turan out of the net afterall :)
Right. She pulls her alchemist's fire and.... ;p

Seeing that it is out of range for most of her more physical attacks Fauxish pops the spear from her shoulder and in one fluid motion and hurls it at the arachnid.
Not sure if this occurs before or after the shadow puppet arrives on the scene (sometimes that takes a full-round) so there might be a -4 penalty for tossing the weapon into melee.
spear: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20 damage: 1d8 ⇒ 4
Fauxish |
This turn she goes to aid Turan (sans alchemist's fire). Or rather she will once Isobel is out of the way. So I guess she delays and waits to see what happens.
Xasay Xyu |

Not with Shadow Puppets! It's a Bardic Performance, ergo a standard action by default. :D
GM DevilDoc |
Sorry guys, rough couple of days!
Fauxish: So are you tossing the fire, the spear, or delaying?
Still up are Nikolai and Isobel

Yup see that now. Thank you. As I said, its been a crappy couple of days.
Nikolai moves forward, ready to dip, dodge, duck, dive, and dodge!
Isobel sends in a glob of acid, but the nimble spider is too quick for her. It does, however, look displeased at the damage to its web.

Fauxish: So are you tossing the fire, the spear, or delaying?
Fire was a joke. Spear was for real instead of all the punching. If Isobel moves next/this (in all the excitement I lost count) round I'll try to free Turan.
GM DevilDoc |
Fauxish throws a spear at the spider, and it scores a gash along the bulbous abdomen.
The spider hisses, and runs along its web, dropping down to the ground before Fauxish and lashing out at the monk.
Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Luckily for Fauxish, the lodged spear throws off the balance of the spider.

Despite Xasay horrible aim, the bird manages to bring the stricken spider down.
"Out of Combat"
I will update in the morning.

GM DevilDoc |
The spider is dead.. now what, guys?
The carcass of the spider lies before you, and webs hang and drift all about the rubble of the room. Eventually, the party manages to free Turan from his silken embrace and yall are left with the room you are in and a doorway leading deeper into the tower.
Isobel the Nymph |
Isobel looks relieved as the spider falls from its perch. She does not appear saddened as she did when the dogs died.
"I guess we should try the doorway," she suggests as she begins to look around. However, she is looking in the direction they had already come from.
perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
GM DevilDoc |
As Nikolai looks around the rooms, he spies a cocoon of sorts in a corner, just within reach. As for the other two rooms, there is progressing rubble as you move around the central column. The door is just barely able to open, but all you find are the remains of a stairway choked with rubble and collapsed debris. The final room is almost entirely collapsed, and mounds of rubble nearly reach the ceiling.
GM DevilDoc |
Looks like leftovers from a spider dinner.. but you can't really tell without opening the cocoon up
-Posted with Wayfinder
Nikolai Vancaskerkin |
"I hope you all brought alchemist's fire," Nikolai says as he approaches the cocoon, pulling his handaxe to cut through the silk strands. "There's probably a zillion of the eight-legged bastards in here." He grimaces as he kneels down next to it, and slices open the silk.
GM DevilDoc |
As Nikolai cuts open the cocoon, an emaciated corpse of a dog falls out. It appears to be a small household pet, and wears a collar with stones spelling out the name "FIFI".
In case you missed it in the ruckus of the dog fight, there are clues for the next step in the same post.
Xasay Xyu |
Appraise: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Xasay gingerly removes the collar from the facsimile of a dog. "Hmm, I believe this is what we adventurers would call 'treasure' - garish, but worth 50 gold pieces at the very least."
GM DevilDoc |
Looking at the outside of the building, it looks like it may be possible to climb up to the second level room that is open to the air.
DC 15 climb check to make it up to the second level. If you get creative, I will take that into consideration!
Xasay Xyu |
I'm a little confused; is there anything left on this floor? It seems like we've only gone through one or two rooms.
GM DevilDoc |
Not on this floor, I kind of lumped everything in together when Nikolai checked through the doorway. There are 4 rooms to each floor, but on the ground level you actually enter through a wall into a collapsed room.
Turan who walks the Steppe |
Turan can take 10 on climb for 16 to get up. From there he can can attempt to aid another fro the top while someone from below can also aid. Hopefully we can all make it up by taking 10 that way. Also Turan can provide guidance for a +1 bonus to rolls.
Turan sizes up the climb upward while it looks a bit dangerous it's no real challenge for a well trained and experienced outdoorsman like turan and he makes his way up, slowly but steadily then offers assistance from above.
Xasay Xyu |
Not as confident as Turan in his climbing skills, Xasay opts to take another way up: He selects another of his metal stencils, holding it against the sunlight, and from out of the side of the tower bursts a beetle of eerie lambent blackness, the same size as Xasay. It snatches up Xasay securely in its many legs and flies, however awkwardly, to the second floor and sets him down before ceasing to exist.
I conjure a shadow fire beetle to carry me up!
Nikolai Vancaskerkin |
Nikolai visibly relaxes when the only occupant of the cocoon turns out to be a dead dog. "Well, at least this wasn't a total loss," he says after Xasay examines the collar.
After they leave the base of the tower, Nikolai follows Turan up the side. "Now this is more like it," he says, as the pair make their way the short distance up. "It's just like climbing up the sides of buildings back in Kaer Maga. You never really forget how."
I'll also take 10 for a 17. Once we're at the entry point, I'll look around for a place to tie a rope for the rest of the group to climb up.
GM DevilDoc |
Nikolai, Turan, and Xasay all make it to the top. There is plenty of rubble around to tie a rope off, if you wish. One you make it to the top, you are confronted with two doors, both closed.
-Posted with Wayfinder
Fauxish |
Once Paizo's website works again, Fauxish takes her time and 10 to scale the rope to the second floor.
"By breaking them." Fauxish says matter of factly.
Nikolai Vancaskerkin |
Nikolai smirks at Fauxish's response. "That's about my style as well," he says. "Natalya was always better at B&E than me. I'm much better at the B." He does give the two doors a quick examination, though.
