Skallangbiorn calls upon Gorum and begins testing the man's wounds. "Zethryis, maintain his flank, watch for his follow through! Julian make sure there's not more of them coming..."

Unless I miscalculated, Rutilux had 27 hitpoints after that last double smash he took but before Skallingborn healed him so not quite down for the count unless I missed something else?

So...if the healing goes through, I'm up to 49 as of this post? If it doesn't, then I'd be at 29 but in lots of pain if he hits like that again

Rutilux's arm feels as it might fall off after the grievous wounds inflicted upon the extremity. Nevertheless, it serves well enough to attack again.

And yes you're right Rutilux, I saw your hp and misinterpreted it as hp before that rounds punishment

With Rutilux keeping the creature's attention, Zethyris rolls in and stabs at the creatures back but it moves and all he manages to do is slice off a thin layer of dead tissue. Anastasiya continues her barrage of force bolts which slowly blast sections away piece by piece. Rutilux hammers at the creature but it keeps inter posing its hammer between it and Rutilux's deadly weapon. Thorvald comes charging in to regard his pride and honour as he recklessly swings a vicious haymaker that shatter the creatures guard and would have disemboweled a living thing. Jediah follows suit as he adjusts his position slightly and slashes two deep furrows in the dead creatures hide. The undead ulfen shifts his grip on his hammer and swings mightily in a huge arc aim for Thorvald>Rutilux>Zethyris but Thorvald parries both the swing as well as the second swing following shortly afterwards. Julien then pops out of the rocky outcroppings as he fires an arrow that pierces the creature chest, quite probably through its useless heart or lung. Seeing Rutilux wounded but continuing the battle Skallangbiorn switches his Prepared spell for healing as his prayers knit a lot of of Rutilux's wounds.

Translation: "Buring with faith I am always invincible!"

Zethyris slashes at the unnaturally animated decomposing body piercing its back deeply and severing the spine. With a snarl and a gasp the creature drops its hammer and futility tries to grab at the last wound as its form rapidly decays and crumbles into a mix of putrefied and petrified parts vaguely resembling a human body.
Just as the bone dust settles a dim light escapes from the body and you think you see an afterimage of a string ulfen warrior floating away for a moment before the light fades leaving behind the creatures remains and discarded gear:

A suit of incredibly light, tarnished silvery, plate mail and a masterfully crafted earth-breaker that are both magical

Venturing inside the cave you can see several skeletons littered about the cave but one in particular catches your eye. Sitting alone at the back of the cave is a skeleton much older than the rest lying about. The left of its rib age is shattered and a broken spear head lays upon the ground nearby and a dull looking but heavy half helm sits atop its skull. Ringing the helm are over a dozen yellowish teeth angled and positioned to mimic a crown and a single deep blue gem adorns the centre just a above the brow.

"Oui, but wasn't he a nasty one. . . That might be mithral metal in that suit, I can tell once we get him out, err I guess scrubbed off or poured out of it that is"

casting Prestidigitation to clean the stuff, then casting Identify and scanning the remains and also the cave mouth for further auras.

When venturing inside:
"I have a bad feeling about all those skeletons. They are going to animate and attack us as soon as we try to touch the crown."

How far away are the skeletons?


Both items are magical. The suit of armour is +1 Mithril full plate and the hammer is a +1 earth breaker. Using prestigitation removes the previous occupant easily but the armour is still tarnished leaving it a mottled blackish grey colour with bits retaining its silvery sheen.

The skeletons are all scattered about the cave requiring careful steps to avoid stepping on bones. The cave is barely ten to twelve feet wide at its largest but goes in about twenty feet. Ana and Skall can both detect a vague and faint magical aura on the helm but it's faded almost to the point of being gone leaving no clues at to what enchantment are or were laid upon it.

Thorvald tries to determine the creature whose teeth have been made a part of the headdress and evaluate the skill of its maker.

Skallangbiorn steps in the room and considers the surroundings, lip curling in disgust at the a operable of unburned remains. But the concerns over more undead are on his mind. While Ana investigates the crown, Skall reaches out with his divine senses to Detect Undead in the area.

Rutilux wipes his brow, "Hard won and well fought all," he looks at the remains, and the possible crown, though like the others he holds back on touching it. "The pattern is interesting. But is it a sign of status true or just a mockery of one?"

Despite the macabre location, there are no discernible undead entities revealed by Skallangbiorn's spell but there is a lingering aura implying that this cave may still be haunted.

The helm/crown's craftsmanship is buried under layer upon layer of rust and cobwebs but the fact that it has held up for so long intact is a good sign of the workmanship and quality of materials. The teeth or claws are not from any natural creature living in the north. More likely they are from some great mystical beast. A large one too considering the size of many of them. More detailed investigation would require time, good light and tools to work away at the material marring its surface.

"These teeth are from no known natural beast . . . Maybe a Linnorm? Or some other fey beast."

Thorvald takes notes on the design so that he might recreate the helm at some other time.

"Anja, could you use your magic to clean this like you did the armor outside?"

Thorvald tries to see if the skeleton outside or any of the ones in the cave are large enough to possibly be Sons of the Ursine.

"Yes, I believe I can. Stand back, everyone. Just to make sure."

Anastasiya points her outstretched hand at the crown from afar, mutters a few arcane words, and tries to lift it from the skeleton's head using telekinesis.

She is casting Mage Hand and tries to get it out of the cave without having to go too far into the cave, or physically touching anything. The spell doesn't work on magical items, but since the aura is old and faded, maybe it works in this case. If it doesn't work, she takes a deep breath, then cautiously approaches till she is 10ft away from the crown.

With the crown in front of her, she speaks another spell and tries to remove the cobwebs and rust with a wave of her hand.

Attempting to lift the helm from the skeleton fails due to the helm weighing more than five pounds. The prestigitation spell does remove the grime and cobwebs. To fully restore the helm will require a mend or similar spell.

Ugh, site ate my post yesterday.

Skallangbiorn removes his helm, nose curling as the scent of death becomes stronger. "There are no longer the undead in the area..." He glances about and hooks his helm on his belt. "...but there is a presence here, old and restless and lingering."

After a moment he rests the tip of his greatsword in the dirt before him, gauntlets on the pommel as he summons his god's divine energies. A wave of healing ripples outward to those still wounded. Channel Energy -Healing

"If there is need of assistance, I can offer Mending if the object is discernable in my eyes." He measures his skill and studies the crowned helm in Ana's 'grasp'. Skallangbiorn thinks on his studies in the temple of Trollheim for hints to the object's origins.

As his divinations take effect, he inspects the item anew, detecting any magics that may have been reactivated. He leans in and holds his gauntleted hand out for Ana to lower the crowned helm upon.

Mending Spell:

This spell repairs damaged objects, restoring 1d4 hit points to the object. If the object has the broken condition, this condition is removed if the object is restored to at least half its original hit points. All of the pieces of an object must be present for this spell to function. Magic items can be repaired by this spell, but you must have a caster level equal to or higher than that of the object. Magic items that are destroyed (at 0 hit points or less) can be repaired with this spell, but this spell does not restore their magic abilities.

Jediah will cautiously enter the room to retrieve the crown.


When Jediah lifts the helm from the skeletons brow the motion causes the skeleton to crumble and fall over. A sound almost too quiet to hear escapes the cave like a quiet hiss but nothing else happens.

Jediah:

When you lift the helm you can just make out a voice hissing, "The crown is mine"
Please make a Will save for me versus a mind controlling affect

"If the crown takes over this religious maniac how would we know? He talks crazy already. The minute the crown made Jed talk we'd know he was ensorcelled." Julian laughs. "But we should be leaving, seriously. We've got our symbol. So, Princess, what are we doing about your new retinue?"


Skallangbiorn:

Your mending spell begins to work, restoring the inner leather cap and harness and causing rust to fall off the rivets mounting the leather to the helm. No matter how hard you try your magic doesn't penetrate the helms iron body or reach the teeth. You can tell however that despite the age there is a faint flicker or glimmer of energies remaining from someone able to command divine energies slightly stronger than your own. Inside the helm across the forehead area you can feel rather than read old runes. You would have missed them if not for recognizing the feel of Gorum's mark amidst them. The helm still doesn't resonate or display as being magical through which means it may be the remnants of a dormant blessing rather than a spell.

The only magic auras upon Jediah are his own gear and the faint glow of elemental energies he's carried with him since everyone rejoined each other.

"Jediah has an innate sensitivity to these influences, it seems. Gorum favors him greatly in battle I see no less in his contest of wills with this object. Jediah's aura is free of impurities." Skallangbiorn accepts the crown and begins his inspections. Nodding to Rutilux, he continues. "Let us see what remains of this crown, Sir Knight. Gorum has girded my kind well for such things."

At Julian's comment, the cleric grins wickedly and chuckles. "Such a level of devotion - mania - to give one's will completely to the Lord in Iron. I've not attained such oneness." Skallangbiorn's ice-blue eyes slip over the crown as he summons up the divine energies necessary to repair and search it. "Soon...very soon..." He finishes quietly, eyes glowing as he works a prayer of mending.

The exterior of the crown slowly knits together, Skallangbiorn's prayer removing the ravages of time. When his fingers touch upon the inscribed rune of Gorum his smile deepens. "My skills are not equal to the task of full restoration, however the Lord in Iron smiles upon our venture... His mark is upon the crown and his blessing." He looks up from his study and places that crown in his satchel for the time being. "That's not to say further study is not warranted. 'The heimskur maður gleymir blaðið hefur tvær brúnir.' We should have it researched further when we return before our benefactor places it on his head."

Once done he looks to Ana to see what, if anything, will need to be done about the retinue. Truth be told, he expects them to have already betrayed them and to have an armed who me upon their exit from the mountain. Anything else would be a pleasant surprise. Especially if it means they can leave behind an insurrection to worry the hags.
