Layaali nods. "Ominous."

"We should make camp. While we could press on, it would be perilous; perhaps too much for those of us who can't see in the dark." She eyes the gnomes and Razif, then nods. "Yes. And it would be best not to face the gnolls while exhausted."

The Mountain's Maw |

With the stench of sulfur wafting through the air, the team attempts to make some form of makeshift camp.

Razif Camping Check: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16

Not much in the way of shelter can be gleaned from the rocky foothills widely surrounding the peak of Pale Mountain, but the ranger fashions something rough that will at least provide shelter. Yantuk insists that the 'finger-wigglers' rest and avoid watch, and so the suli, kobold, and ranger divvy up the shifts through the night. Everyone forces down an unsatisfying meal of trail rations, their stomachs too jumpy with anxiety over how their arrival at their target tomorrow might unfold. Before ducking into sleep, Layaali makes the rounds, looking over any wounds, tending to injuries, and invoking any protections from Vildeis over their dreams.

Everyone can be healed fully. Those with ability score damage (Layaali, Razif) still have it.

GM rolls: 3d20 ⇒ (9, 10, 1) = 201d100 ⇒ 271d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

Drael passes an uneventful watch over to Yantuk. The gold-scaled kobold similarly sits through a boring watch shift, notable only for the drop in temperature from brisk to chilly, and then hands over to Razif.

The temperature continues to dip on the ranger's shift, and Razif finds himself shivering under his cloak and blowing into his hands to avoid numbness. An hour after the kobold starts snoring, a familiar low moan seeps from the darkness, just out of the range of Razif's light source. Something has been following them - the edimmu returns!

Razif Perception Check: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

Razif springs to attention!

Razif, you get a surprise round. You may take a move or a standard action. I've done my best to recreate what I'm assuming would be what your illumination would look like on the map. The moans are coming from the southwest on the map. Everyone else is currently asleep.

Layaali's divine power does nothing to the formless undead, and even the magical flames on Razif's sword seem abated, though the ranger connects with the howling thing.

Rab-rab, Yantuk, and Min may act!

Yantuk, who still has no magical weapons, or elemental attacks, wracks his brain for a way to stop this thing. But he has no ideas, outside of helping his new friends hit this thing harder.
    Aid another Drael: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (5) + 14 = 19
If that attack would have hit, Drael gets a +2 to hit next time instead.

Rab-rab isn't sure if this will help, but she was deperate to try to shield Min from the cyclone! She focuses on the protective air around herself and stretches it out, encasing Min (and possibly some others!) in a cozy shroud of air.

I take 1 burn to expand my air shroud to "a number of additional creatures equal to your Con modifier" for 5 minutes. I can expand it to everyone but Drael (sorry, but you're tough Drael), BUT it doesn't say a range. If I can only affect one person she will target Min. If she can target all four she targets everyone but Drael. But, air shroud is like air bubble. I don't think it will help with the wind but it might help if the wind maybe tries to knock the air out of us. Even if it doesn't do anything though I will try.

Yantuk, aid another only works on skill checks, not attack rolls. You are flanking with it, so essentially, you're providing your desired +2 just by your position (for now). Rab-rab, I will rule that you can only shield yourself and Min at present (i.e. extending into the wind effect of the edimmu would disrupt your air bubble effect, though I would allow a chance for success if it was emanating from within the wind effect to begin).

A bubble of pink-tinged air pops up around the gnomes, dampening the sound from the rapidly-shrinking funnel around the edimmu (and their party members). Min fires off a beam of holy light, but even his divine energy gets blown off-target.

Then the howling vortex mercilessly worsens, and the kobold goes flying!

Yantuk Strength Check: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (3) - 2 = 11d4 ⇒ 32d6 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5 5 pts of bludgeoning dmg and you are prone, Yantuk! Also, no more flanking bonus to Drael. Anyone within the windstorm cannot communicate verbally (or hear things) due to the noise of the wind. Also, y'all cannot advance within the windstorm (i.e. across the yellow border towards the edimmu) unless you succeed at a DC 10 Strength check. Drael and Razif can remain where they are (for now), but any skill check or bludgeoning weapon attack that they attempt right now has a -8 penalty.

Yantuk lands heavily near the gnomes. Within the wind tunnel, the still-shaken pair of Drael and Razif desperately attempts to bring down the ghostly creature as a mocking 1/2-laugh-1/2-wail echoes around them.

A brilliant flash of light surrounds the edimmu, leaving her companions unharmed.

Yantuk uses a panache to stand as a swift action that does not provoke. My reading of aid another seems to think that it can be used to help others to hit, specifically,

In melee Combat, you can help a friend attack or defend by distracting or interfering with an opponent. If you're in position to make a melee attack on an opponent that is engaging a friend in melee Combat, you can attempt to aid your friend as a standard Action. You make an Attack Roll against AC 10.

But DM fiat always takes precedence!

Yantuk goes charging back in, ready to do whatever he can to provide a bonus to hit to this nasty creature. He makes a mental note to himself to ask his new friends to prepare a spell that will make his blade able to hit nasty ghosts for the future, as he grits his teeth, going into the windstorm.

  • The wind funnel around the edimmu tightens further as the winds somehow increase in volume to a deafening roar. Both Drael and Razif find their footing slipping as they are drawn towards the cyclone!
