You can't take a look around. It's pitch black down there (as Zork would say, "you are likely to be eaten by a grue"). You could bring a light, but that would of course alert every creature within sight to your presence there. Is that really what you want to do?

Male Human Battle Sorcerer 1

Guys, I've lost my internet access. That condition should last for a week or two - I don't know how long really. I may be able to post sporadically, but it would be best for my character to become NPC temporarily.

male Hobgoblin (Elven lineage) 5th (2nd level monk, 2nd level goblin paragon, 1st level worghest)

Wyvrun hits the landing and looks around.

Vision 90' darkvision1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18 and Scent1d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17

Just one check, against Perception; scent gives a blanket +8, so your total check would be 1d20 + 14 = 26.

The gloom is deep; even so, your eyes cut through the darkness. You see no creatures, but a rank, bestial smell originates from ahead, behind a curve in the cave wall. You can't quite hear breathing, but you're pretty sure something is lurking there, waiting for you to walk by. And you're pretty sure it's aware of you, too.

Are you seriously yelling down into the shaft, alerting the entire complex????!!!!!

Remember, I'm assuming you're still up above. In order to climb down into the shaft, you'll need some form of light -- but you also need both hands free, so you can't carry a lantern while you climb. Once you're down there, your light will make you a nice glowing target for anything down there. If you stand within light range of Wyvurn (close enough to whisper to him), you make BOTH of you into handy targets.

If you had the impression the place would be totally deserted, that's not totally accurate -- most of the goblins and wolves are probably out, but there are likely some goblins and bugbears still down there.

male Hobgoblin (Elven lineage) 5th (2nd level monk, 2nd level goblin paragon, 1st level worghest)

Wyvurn winces at Caspian's remark.

Maybe we can salvage this. Hopefully it's just a lone sentry up ahead

Wyvurn unslings his bow and nocks and arrow.

In goblin, "Come on out and help me if you want a share. Be quick, before the worgs tear what's left to pieces"

Ready an action to fire at whatever comes around the corner

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

A deep, gruff voice, like the grating of slate, softly replies to you in Goblin from around the corner: "All hail the Black Wolf."

Male Halfling Bard 5 (Minstrel)

An here I was thinking halflings had low-light vision or something......

I guess I am stuck at the top of the "shaft"....

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3
Caspian Barefoot wrote:

Even if you had low-light vision (you don't -- check the traits you cut and pasted into your profile!) -- you still wouldn't be able to see in total darkness (i.e., as soon as you were out of range of the small amount of light filtering down through the briars).

male Hobgoblin (Elven lineage) 5th (2nd level monk, 2nd level goblin paragon, 1st level worghest)

Would I have any idea what the 'Black Wolf' means?

"Aye, all hail the Black Wolf. The good stuff is going fast. Get out here if you want some."

Male Halfling Bard 5 (Minstrel)

I seem to have de-railed the game....DM please adjudicate as needed to get the game going.....

Here is my version.....

Caspian climbs down to the point it begins to get dark, and then realizing he has no source of light, stops.... and whispers to Wyvern......

Male Mountain Dwarf Fighter/5 HP 41/52 (0 Temp) DR 3/- ; AC 27 FF 22 T 15 Fort +8 Ref +7 Will +4 Intuit +4; Fire Resist 8; CMD 24; Init +3 (+5 Underground)

Jaegr is worried something is wrong. His fingers tighten around his pick axe, but knows that he would do more harm than good charging in there now. He just needs to be patient and trust that everyone is OK.

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Jaegr:

Spoiler:
You get a feeling that your instincts are pretty accurate in this case, on both counts.

Wyvurn:

Spoiler:
"The Black Wolf" means nothing to you, but you begin to suspect it wasn't just a polite greeting. Rather than the voice's owner stepping around the corner towards you, instead the scent gradually diminishes... you're pretty sure that whatever was waiting there has crept off down the passageway, away from you and deeper into the caves.

Caspian:

Spoiler:
Having nimbly avoided most of the thorns on the way down, you're now at an impasse. You can continue down into the darkness, and doubtless fall, or you can try and climb back up, or you can wait and see what occurs. The good news is that, after your abortive whisper, you're able to move 5 ft. or so without making any noise and are now snuggled bahind a thick clump of vegetation. You now believe that you are mostly indetectable from above or below, even to things that can see in the dark. You might be mistaken, but you get the impression from the echoes below that, if you had enough light, you might have a clear shot with your sling to the area where Wyvurn is.

male Hobgoblin (Elven lineage) 5th (2nd level monk, 2nd level goblin paragon, 1st level worghest)

Damn it, he's probably played me and now is going to warn the rest of them.

Wyvurn gives chase as quietly as he can hoping to turn the corner and shoot the voice's owner before he can get too far.

Accelerated Movement: Stealth 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11 Wyvurn's hope is to round the corner and shoot the voice--except the boards die roller is a fickle b*~&~

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Enemy Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10

Wyvurn:

Spoiler:
As you round the corner, you see a hairy, goblinlike shape, seven feet tall, wearing light armor and carrying a heavy spiked mace. It's moving down the corridor rapidly, in a deceptively awkward-looking flat-footed crouch that nevertheless moves it along the rocky floor in near-total silence.

Obviously proud of itself for how cleverly it tricked you, the bugbear seems to be assuming you're still at the entrance, and is still moving away as if you're not there.

Male Halfling Bard 5 (Minstrel)

Caspian stays put assuming he can inspire or otherwise help in some way....

Caspian Barefoot wrote:

Just keep in mind that if you use inspiration, that means you'll be playing music, which in turn means that your position will be obvious to anything nearby.

Male Wood Elf 1

Kirth:
Hey man, you can go ahead and nuke Kelsin. RL has got me to the point where keeping my main couple games going is already a huge stretch, and I feel I'm doing you a disservice by being such a zombie here; you wanted playtesters and I just don't think I'm coming through in that regard. Thanks so much for letting me play for a while, though; 'preciate it. I love your GMing style!

male Hobgoblin (Elven lineage) 5th (2nd level monk, 2nd level goblin paragon, 1st level worghest)

Wyvurn smiles to himself.

Lets hope this works

Wyvurn lets loose his arrow and then quickly backpedals towards the entrance.

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 231d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

And that should royally piss him off

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

With a bellow of rage, the bugbear spins and begins sprinting towards Wyvurn, raising his mace as he does so. His deep roars echo up and down the tunnels; anything down here has doubtless been alerted to intruders, but there's no telling how long it might take them to investigate.

Seeing that you're hobgoblin, he gibbers at you in Goblin, explaining the culinary uses he intends for your liver and kidneys.

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

@Kelsin/DRA:

Spoiler:
I understand completely, and appreciate the note. With your permission, for the sake of continuity I'd like to keep Kelsin with the group for a bit (he'll just follow the others without you needing to direct him), and see if his end can come organically by means of monsters, instead of having the character simply exit stage left. If you'd prefer he runs away or something instead, let me know. And again, thanks for the heads-up.

Male Wood Elf 1

Kirth:
Sure thing! Feel free to DMPC/dispose of Kelsin however you want, whatever makes most sense in your current story arc.

Male Halfling Bard 5 (Minstrel)

Caspian hears the roar and is not certain what is going on....

Though when he hears the goblin threats he is pretty sure it is trouble!

Caspian casts dancing lights above him in the light and then moves the lights downwards into the hole as far as he is able......

hopes anyone seeing the lights will think the caster is above his hiding spot

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Clever hobbit!

The bugbear would be even more disturbed at the falling lights, but his blood-lust is up too high for him to think too deeply about them just now.

male Hobgoblin (Elven lineage) 5th (2nd level monk, 2nd level goblin paragon, 1st level worghest)

Wyvurn is severely questioning his tactics.

In goblin, Why don't you come on up here and air out, your stench is killing me."

Wyvurn looses another arrow, drops his bow, and then turns to climb back up the hole.

In Common, "Incoming!"

I am assuming we roll for init?

Caspian, from above and to the side of the enraged bugbear, evokes a string of lights to baffle any further mace-throwing. The hairy beast settles for pulling out another mace and howling. From down the tunnel, an answering howl can be clearly heard.

Male Halfling Bard 5 (Minstrel)

Discretion is the better part of valor, Caspian leaves the monster to swat uselessly at the dancing lights, and climbs up after Wyvern
assuming the monsters have just said something about halfling roast for dinner....

male Hobgoblin (Elven lineage) 5th (2nd level monk, 2nd level goblin paragon, 1st level worghest)

Wyvurn continues to make his way back to Jaegr and Kelsin.

"Looks like sneaking in is out of the question at this point. At least we might have them in a bottleneck. Wish I hadn't dropped my bow in order to get away from that bugbear."

Once to the top, Wyvurn draws his kukri and waits.

It looks like an easy climb, just slow and painful.

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

The bugbear retreats a bit down the tunnel, out of the line of fire from the shaft. By straining your necks, those of you with darkvision can see

Spoiler:
that he's been joined by a second bugbear, who has a large collection of throwing spears.

Caspian cast unwitting ally

Unwitting Ally

Spoiler:

School enchantment (charm) [mind-affecting]; Level bard 0

CASTING

Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S

EFFECT

Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Targets one living creature
Duration 1 round
Saving Throw Will negates; Spell Resistance yes

DESCRIPTION

You befuddle the target's mind. The target has difficulty telling friend from foe for a short period of time. The subject is considered your ally and not your enemies' ally while determining flanking. The subject takes no other hostile action against your enemies due to this spell's effect.

Caspian -- there's no flanking going on, and thus unwitting ally (which prevents it) would have no effect.

Guys, I've got my internet access back. Although, so much time has passed that I have lost a connection to this character. I think it should be best if I bow out of this game or create another character, perhaps. Whatever is best for the group.

Maybe your character connection will be restored after playing a bit, now that your internet connection is restored?

Jaegr: You can climb down with a successful check, but remember you take 1 hp damage from thorns in so doing. As you start down, you see one of the bugbears standing on his toes about 60 ft. away, just waiting for you to get within javelin range.

Bugbears' Bluff checks
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

Wyvurn: The newcomer bubear seems to start at your assertion, and gets as far as yelling "WHO?!" in Goblin, before the other monster cuffs him lightly on the back of the head to shut him up.

The one who spoke goes back to watching you intently, while his savvier friend keeps an eye on Jaegr's progress.

Jaegr doesn't want to get stuck with a javelin, but needs to climb down so he continues down hoping the bugbear's aim will be off.

Climb 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

With Caspian's dancing lights floating around at the bottom of the shaft, it's possible for those without darkvision to climb down. Vanya, for example, would only need to be about halfway there in order to get a clear line of effect with his sleep spell...

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

One of the bubgears gets eager and lunges froward, throwing a spear at Jaegr, who is still climbing:

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
1d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

The javelin clatters harmlessly off of Jaegr's scale mail; meanwhile, the bugbear, until he retreats back into the passage, is within a line of fire from people like Caspian.

male Hobgoblin (Elven lineage) 5th (2nd level monk, 2nd level goblin paragon, 1st level worghest)

Wyvurn climbs back down to join Jaegr.

"Nothing is ever easy.."

Accelerated Climb 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

"Well, my smelly kin, you have gone and made this hard for yourselves."

The two bugbears, although they've avoided the halfling's bow fire, retreat back into the tunnel a bit so that more missiles can't be fired at them. Grinning to show their fangs, they clutch their maces and wait for Wyvurn and Jaegr to bring the fight to them.

I'm assuming Vanya would climb down to join the other two:
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14

I'm also assuming that Kelsin and Snort stayed with "Black Snake" Charlie to guard the box.
