After 10 hours spent standing in lines at the airport, the DM's flight was finally cancelled and the next flight out was too late to do him any good. So I'm back, anyway!
Wyvurn: After a minute, you start to feel a lot better.
You heal 2d8 + 3 ⇒ (4, 5) + 3 = 12 points of damage.

Vanya pats his cloak, checks to make sure his familiar is around (it stops scurrying about in the form of an albino lizard in order to flit about as a bat), and nods. "Ready," he says, with his broadsword in hand.
Looking ahead, far past a field of stalagmites, you can see the back end of the long cave you're in. In the cave wall stands a wooden door, banded with iron.

"Looks like we found something important. Now that the 'dog' is dead we can go for the master. Any have any skills to get through this door, other than my 'key'?"
Jaegr looks to his Pick Axe

Wyvurn |

Wyvurn walks over to the door and inspects it before attempting to open it.
To Caspian, "Pretty hard, but these mushrooms have given me a new found energy."

I did not include scent in the first roll because I did not think it was appropriate. Also, I will be away from the 'net until next week.

The door appears to be made of wood -- you assume oak or something -- and is banded with iron, as you previously saw. It smells like musty old wood and metal (I'll throw that one in for free!).
Listening at it, you think you can hear some muffled noises: speech? Movement? It's too hard to tell.

Jaegr will try and open it as quietly as possible, if it is locked or barred we will make the decision to bash it down

When Jaegr applies his full strength to it, the door opens, at first slowly, but after getting it started, its weight adds to the force of the swing and it very quickly gets out of hand. As it crashes against the wall of the room beyond, a trio of armored goblins, obviously caught off-guard, stare dumbly at the open portal.
Past them, lolling on a crude stone throne, is a black-furred wolflike bugbear, with a long muzzle, bushy tail, and eyes that burn like embers. In front of the throne is a stone pedestal, the top of which is hollowed out to hold the base a spherical object (although it currently seems to be empty).

Is it possible to get past the goblins and get to the bugbear or will they have to be taken care of first?
Jaegr points at the bugbear and says "You're mine!" (not caring if he can understand)
Initiative 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

The three goblin soldiers are obviously fast and well-trained; they interpose themselves between the party and the throne without dropping a beat, despite the expressions on their faces (which show they can't believe this is really happening). But they are not as fast as the halfling. Caspian darts past them, feints left, then lets fly with one of the greatest sling shots ever attempted by a lowly former court jester.
To confirm crit: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Add damage: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 4) = 9
With a cry of rage, the bugbear-like thing on the thone reels back, some sort of flaming ichor dripping from a scalp wound. It appears that some of the damage of the shot was somehow negated, but the hobbit's stone flew so true that it still drew first blood, reminding the monster that nothing is truly invulnerable.
Jaegr realizes that he'll have to cut his way through the bodyguards to finish off the monster.
Surprise round ended; Caspian gains a hero point for pure awesomeness -- not just his sling attack, but his classic Western-movie one-liner. Round one begins: Caspian goes first, then the goblins, then Vanya, Jaegr, and Wyvurn, in that order.

Jaegr laughs with approval, "I see your time spent with me has taught you a thing or two of finding the weak spot of your enemy!"

Kirth Gersen |

With Jaegr in the lead and making threats at the boss, the goblins charge him ferociously.
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 191d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 151d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 111d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
The lead goblin nicks him before he can regain his poise, but the others' spears skitter harmlessly off his armor.

Kirth Gersen |

Vanya, embarrassed at the failure of his last sleep spell, tries again:
1d20 + 0 ⇒ (3) + 0 = 3
1d20 + 0 ⇒ (6) + 0 = 6
1d20 + 0 ⇒ (18) + 0 = 18
This time, the results are dramatic, as two of the goblins nod off and slump to the floor; the third is left facing the grinning dwarf and impassive hobgoblin, both with their weapons ready.

Jaegr "Knock Knock" |

Jaegr swats the awake goblin then moves towards the bugbear unsure of what he is facing.
Combat Expertise and Power Attack with Crushing Blow 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Damage 1d8 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17
AC goes to 19

Sorry for the delay... I broke my foot Thursday night/Friday AM and have been dealing with that instead of checking online.
Jaegr, as always swings strongly and adeptly with the pick, catching the goblin soldier square in the torso, snapping the mail rings like candy and leaving the former guard a bloody rag doll.
Wyvurn, temporarily out of harm's reach, takes a moment to ward himself from injury.
Caspian plays a new tune, while clapping his hands to carry the rhythm of his driving inspiration; the whirl of his magic taps into some alternate reality and conjures a coating of slippery grease, covering the throne and area immediately around it.
Reflex save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
The black-furred monster on the throne seems almost amused. "Your magic tricks are no good against such as I, O tasty mortal snack," it intones. "But hold... you fools do not have my stone with you. Am I to believe that mere village whelps have come this far? No matter. My worg outriders will be reporting back here any minute now. Shall I save you for their entertainment? Or devour your souls myself?"
Something about its voice, or its lambent gaze, fills you with a sense of utter hopelessness in the face of such obvious power. Will saves for everyone.

Jaegr's fighting will elevates him above the waves of despair lapping at the edges of his consciousness. Still, he feels a trickle of nervousness when he realizes that this is no mere bugbear. With eyes of green fire, it would seem to be some fell creature from the Pit -- and the doughty dwarf has no experience in fighting such monsters.

The doughty hobgoblin saves against the effect as if it weren't there, and flows forward in his fighting stance.
Jaegr, rolling yet another natural 20, causes the gods of the dungeon to question whether the Gods of the Paizo E-Dice have ever been THAT generous to anyone -- man or dwarf. Jaegr, I think you've used up your 20s for the forseeable decade!
Jaegr's ancestral pick is of cold iron, forged by dwarf-lords of eons ago, beneath the Elder Mountains, solely to slay demons and dark fey. Jaegr's whole life has been of mining and warfare, and the pick has been with him so long that it is a magic blade when in his hands. Few creatures, mortal or demon, can stand against such a weapon.
But the weapon's power is not solely in its properties, but also in the hand that wields it. Jaegr's mighty blow is delivered using the exact same stroke that felled the bugbear near the cavern entrance -- the one the barghest you now vie with had howled in fear of, its wailing echoing all the way up to the surface. That howl was fear of its own destruction. And that being now stands before you.
The monster is unable to slink away, to blast you with its magic (as it is easily capable of doing), of tearing you apart with its lupine fangs (from which a death there is no resurrection). Instead, it stares, in abject, paralyzed terror, as the pick descends like the judgment of the gods and destroys its mortal form, just as the bugbear was rent; and when you tear the pick from the stone floor of the cave, there is nothing but green fire and a sulfurous smoke where the Goblin King had crouched just a moment before.
Caspian, staring in awe, doubtless has some witty comment to make!

I'll be out of touch from today until Tuesday. You might come up with a plan: do you search the room? Try to escape before the worgs and their riders return? Throw a luau to celebrate?
I think we decided to search the room as thoroughly as possible. Then depending on what we find (if anything) we will try and head back out. I think if there is a hidden room or something we would probably go there first. (Maybe this guy has another way out)

Kirth Gersen |

The monster was wearing a ring, now clearly visible on the stone floor. There is no other treasure that you can see, hear, taste, or smell. The pedestal for the rock is of worked stone; searching it would require some other check -- perhaps a Disable Device to check for hidden openings, or a Profession (mining) to assess its worksmanship. Barring that, it also looks like a few decent blows (or one swing of Jaegr's Pickaxe of Annihilation) could probably smash it apart.
