Journey to the East - Jade Regent (Inactive)

Game Master Severed Ronin

When a decades-old secret is exposed, an unassuming local tavern-owner and a close friend of the PCs discovers her birthright is to rule one of the ancient Dragon Empires of Tian Xia—the empire of Minkai. Yet the current ruler of this empire, the mysterious and increasingly cruel Jade Regent, has no intention of giving up his hold over the throne. In order to save Minkai from a would-be tyrant, the PCs must not only escort their friend from Varisia to Tian Xia, braving the frozen horrors of the Crown of the World, but must aid her in gaining the trust and support of a nation on the edge of anarchy.

First, these jobs are not set. I created a caravan I thought appropriate for the each of you and assigned positions based on your strengths. While many of you are adept at several tasks, I chose your positions based off how often they'd likely be needed as well as how complimentary your particular skill set was compared to your party members. For example, I don't currently have a Trader listed as it's only realistic that you'll be trading once you stop at a settlement.

The Caravan (Level 3):

Primary Statistics
Offense 4 (2 [Base] + 2 [Guard x2])
Defense 3
Mobility 2
Morale 2

Derived Statistics
Attack = +8
Armor Class = 13
Security = +7 (+9 if surprised)
Resolve = +7 (+8 w/ Scout's ability)

Unrest 0

Speed 32 miles per day

Gavin! Hey, hey! Sir Gavin! We're the same! You and the donkey dwarf! We can be driving buddies! I'll show you how!

Updated. (Sorry, Mukluk, nothing but NPC drivers for you.) Sir Gavin was set as a Driver due to the job role prerequisites. I changed Sir Gavin to primarily a guard, adjusted the statistics where necessary, and hired an additional driver to fill the gap.

Each job has a prerequisite as shown under Travelers herre. I was trying to fill the gap based upon skills already possessed without the need to hire an additional NPC.

Also, despite no one asking, I figured a low consumption rate and a high Defense rating would be preferred, so I created the caravan with that concept in mind. Most offensive combat can be handled independently of the caravan unless there's a high-speed chase involved.

Entertainer sounds just dandy for György. He'll have a great time telling stories, especially reminiscing about caravan trips with Sandru and Mukluk and tales about Desna.

With a high Diplomacy, Corvus could double as a Trader when needs be. I'd also like to buy a horse and be in the saddle some of the time, rather than be sitting on a wagon all of the time (if that's OK).

That's perfectly fine. I know a few of you can double as other jobs, but you can only be doing one job at a time (save for Hero which stacks). Traders are really only needed when you're stopping in a settlement.

I should have the next post up sometime tomorrow. I won't say, "Morning," because every time I do, I end up lying. >_<

Actually, that's not a bad idea. Treygan would also like to purchase a horse.

Not to my knowledge. Sir Gavin's been the only addition to the group since Toshiro stepped off.

Keep your eyes peeled for a full update sometime tomorrow.

I'd like to address a few changes. You may have noticed that while I'm continuing to implement the caravan roleplay, I'm toning back a bit on the actual mechanics. I'm handling those on my end. The first battle with the ankhegs was a test of the caravan's machinations and I wasn't pleased.

The caravan party, however, will still be utilized in parallel fights alongside your group as was also witnessed during the ankheg fight (i.e. Ameiko, Sandru, etc.). I like the roleplay behind everyone fighting together as opposed to them seemingly just not existing while war rages around them. I hope to continue this.

Overall I'm very pleased with how our roleplay has gone throughout Act 1 and Act 2 here. Act 3, as I said, we'll be tackling tomorrow. Rest up, heroes.

The game is afoot.

After noon i will be out of touch for the weekend except for maybe a single evening posting.

Jean and I must go visit Besmarra, the pirate queen herself in Orlando for Megacon. Feel free to bot me.

Sneak, peak, stab.

Roger that.

Not that I am complaining or anything, but my current wealth by level sits at a fat: 759gp with 553 gp to spend.

Now at lvl 3 or 4, have we missed a lot of loot drops?

My gear includes a scroll of false life, 2 pot CLW, 1 pot Lsr Restoration.

At some point we're going to run into a monster that requires a magic weapon to hurt it and it's going to kick our asses.

Oh, I also own a 1/5 share in a wand of CLW...you have that, right Gyorgy?

Yep, and I was looking at the same concern as Mukluk. Not sure if everyone is off that far, but we're definitely behind.

One of said items is the ring of arcane signets...and the other is the amulet of nat armor...I remember Corvus did trade the earring of protection...still as with most Paizo Adventure Paths this too seems to be low on loot...but most are designed for only 4 players as well.

I effectively traded the earring for the quiver.

I recall just stating as to the value trades. Does not change the normal lack of cash.

Exploration-wise, you've missed one cache of loot, but it's not by much that it would've evened you out. The overland journey leaves only a small amount of room for anything related to loot, so I tried to center that on the travel and experiences itself.

Now as for loot inside the mysterious ancient castle...

Well, I guess we'll have to see what sort of ancient treasure lies in wait.

Alright, if everyone gets a chance and is capable of doing so, please email me your character sheets (w/ inventory if you have it). I rechecked my notes and you've missed three caches, so I'm going to see what I can do to remedy that situation before having anyone seriously delve into the depths of Brinewall.

I'm not worried...just mildly concerned over the lack of magic weaponry at 4th level...this is a frequent issue especially with the earlier Paizo Golarion Adventure Paths.

The problem lies with the missed caches. Reviewing both this AP and a few others, I can see where lack of items can come into play. There are so many variables involved that it's easy to miss a few things. I'm not going to have you stumble upon a dragon's hoard here, but I'd also like to be able to track this better on my end. I'd make a few notes, but I also made the mistake of putting a check mark next to a loot cache that y'all DIDN'T find, so I've been factoring that into the party's WBL this entire time.

I'm normally pretty easy going on loot as well, so I'm not too concerned either. The magic weapon issue is one consideration, but I don't think we're too bad off on that at present. If evil, I can get through DR with Smite and Bless Weapon. And depending on what type of Maguc Corvus is, could get through with Arcane Pool. Not the best options, but we do have options available. Also as best as I can tell, we did give Ameiko the Whispering Shrike (someone correct me if I'm wrong on that), so we could always come back to the caravan and ask to borrow it if we need to.

Just sent GM Beazy the update on György, but he's at 732 gp in gear and 25 gp to spend. So lagging a little ;)

My alias is up to date with regards gear and gold.

My comment about swapping the earring for the quiver wasn't a complaint, merely an observation that I gave up one magical item to get another.

Getting or not getting items isn't an issue for me. I'll always stay true to my character, so finding a magical item Corvus wouldn't use, is only of value for its gold worth (which is only half of its true worth of course). She wouldn't switch to a shortsword even if it was +4.

My last thought (not literally of course, but for now I mean) is that APs can be run with four characters. Our increased numbers should off-set any lack of magical weapons or armour.

APs as written operate with the four-man concept, correct. The problem lies in my adjusting the AP for a squad of six, but failing to update the loot drops. I won't be providing you with a dragon's hoard just yet, but I do want to ensure all my players are properly equipped for their level and for the necessary encounters. I won't need encounters by giving you just the right item to clinch victory, but I will ensure y'all are properly outfitted. I've adjusted several items thematically or based on character composition already and will continue to do so.

Also if there's something cool you see that you like or would like at some point let me know and we'll work together to see what we can do. Doubtful I'll had everything to you on a silver platter, but we might be able to settle on something bronze- or copper-plattered.

Just kinda helps to give y'all an insight into how I'm operating.

Jean, in the interest of all of us having a chance to play and not just sit and watch the scout, please just scout 1-2 rooms at a time.
