About György Badžo

Description
György is a medium-height, wiry Varisian man in his mid-twenties with straight black hair that runs to the top of his shoulders. He has large eyes of deep violet hue, that seem to always suggest a long-buried loss in spite of György’s relentlessly positive outlook on life. His skin is the deep, dusky shade of a Varisian native and is covered in strikingly beautiful tattoos, most of the work depicting Desnan legends and Thassilonian runes. The cleric carries an 8-foot long spear topped with a cold iron head that suggests the shape of a stylized starknife. The hardwood shaft is made of a dark wood smoothed to a velvety finish by years of György running his hands over the wood. Motion seems to come effortlessly to the young cleric — he is quick, but not frenetic, he seems to move from place to place without moving at all, and to see him dance is to understand why the Varisian’s are legendary for their grace and creativity.

Personality
György has a persistently positive outlook. In spite of the terrible events that befell him in his youth, faith in Desna helped him to overcome them and he passionately preaches about Desna's ability to help others. But György understands Desna's fierce side as well (this is the goddess who went into the Abyss to take out Aolar after all) and faced with evil, he does not hesitate to strike and lead others into the fight. If anything, György’s passion is likely to get him and those he associates with into trouble because of his insistence on making things right. György has seen much of Varisia in the last eleven years, making his way from town to town and caravan to caravan while helping to tend many of the shrines to Desna throughout the region and tending to her flock, but of late the cleric has started to have the urge to see the lands beyond Varisia’s borders and plans on this being his last trip to Sandpoint before striking out for a longer journey.

Faith
György is a traveling priest of Desna and Varisia has been his church for the last 11 years. He is eager to spread Desna’s message of hope and frequently uses his own life as an example for those facing difficult times. György practices a rare form of Desnan worship that uses mystic tattoos to facilitate his connection to the goddess. György constantly adds to his tattoos and evolves the work of art covering his skin and the tattoos work together with his faith and prayer to help him channel the power of Desna on behalf of the goddess.

Background
György was the unplanned progeny of a liaison between Violca Badžo and a Sczarni con man visiting Sandpoint during the Ritual of Stardust on the summer solstice. Father long gone, György was born on 19 Pharast AR 4687. By happy chance, Violca was a worshipper of Desna and her son had the good fortune to come under the wing of Father Ezakien Tobyn, the priest of Desna who led the Sandpoint Chapel 26 years ago.

Only a couple years older than Ameiko, György knew her growing up and even harbored a secret crush on the girl, but Lonjiku Kaijitsu’s strict rules kept the two from getting to know one another well. For some reason, György also found himself strangely shy around Ameiko, a shyness that has carried over to adulthood in spite of György’s fearlessness in most other situations.

In AR 4702, when György was 15, he was awoken by a terrible knock on the door. A hollow-eyed Sheriff Avertin and Father Tobyn stood outside, Father Tobyn’s eyes wet with tears. The two bore the awful news that Violca was the 16th victim of the Chopper, the murderer terrorizing Sandpoint. It was György’s first brush with the monsters that haunt the dark places outside Desna’s light. It wouldn’t be the last.

A month later, György’s mentor, Father Tobyn perished in the fire that claimed the old Sandpoint Chapel together with several other businesses and homes. Praying to Desna for guidance, one thing became clear to the young man. In spite of all of the tragedy, he had the responsibility to preach Desna’s gospel to the people of Varisia. Father Zanthus was more than capable of tending to Sandpoint. It was time for György to take to the road.

Saying few farewells, György joined the next caravan leaving town. A Magnimar to Riddleport run led by Sandru Vhiski. Sensing a lingering sadness in the young man, Koya Mvashti introduced György to a venerable Varisian priest of Desna named Pesha. His own crusading days long over Pesha taught the young man a whole new aspect of Desna, stories that were at the periphery of Father Tobyn’s teachings, tales of the goddess’s battles against the Dark Tapestry, Lamashtu, and Aolar. Pesha also provided György with other lessons. The tattoo-encrusted old man was one of a dwindling number of Desnan tattoo mystics, a Desnan sect that fused the Varisian tattooing tradition with Desnan magic.

The two left Sandru’s caravan in Riddleport and joined another headed north to the Nolands, then made their way east to Kaer Maga. In all, György and Pesha spent a year together. György learned of Desna’s rich history in Varisia, but also more than he imagined of the darkness that clung to the edges of the barely tamed lands. Pesha helped György to grow into a new role, to take Desna’s light to the people of Varisia and to use it against her sworn enemies. The two parted ways in Magnimar, Pesha swearing he was too old to continue he harder roads of Varisia and it was time for the young man to strike out on his own.

For the last decade, György has lived the life of a wandering priest of Desna, tending to shrines throughout Varisia, but also willing to take up arms to defend her people as well. Fortunately, the former has been more frequent than the latter and aside from a near-death experience with the Dark Tapestry at a Thassilonian ruin near Spindlehorn, the priest’s adventures have been relatively tame. Still Sandpoint is home and the place György visits more than any other, always staying at the Rusty Dragon. And so it is that György finds himself back in Sandpoint again, smiling and raising a hand to greet Ameiko as he walks into the Rusty Dragon for what he expects to be the last time in a long time.
