Caylen Etrian |
Crashing through brush and thicket with all the grace of a pregnant deer, Caylen emerges into the clearing picking brambles from her robe and boots, one eye squinted shut and leaves tangled in her hair after a few clumsy falls.
Presuming that discussion of watch and other responsibilities should be left to the people trained for such eventualities, the young woman settles down at the base of one of the large trees, slinging her modest backpack off of her shoulders to clomp down on the hard ground.
After a moment she offers a squint towards the Drow at his assessment of watch timing, then looks up to the sky through the canopy overhead. She says nothing, though, to be contrary to the dark elf's assertion. Instead, she begins unrolling a coarse wool blanket from the top of her pack. After a moment of struggle to unfold it, she drapes the large blanket around her body as she sits with her knees pulled up to her chest, back against the tree, watching the others.

"I'm not tired yet," Caylen notes to old Samuel cheerfully, if perhaps a bit sheepishly. "I'll keep you company. Besides, it feels like it's too cold to sleep comfortably anyway..."
At that thought, Caylen looks around the group with furrowed brows. "Can... anyone start a fire?" There's a small, hopeful, cast to her request.
Mal'c |
Mal'c nods.
"Thank you Silx. Looking at the farmer and Caylen. And thank you Sam and Caylen for taking the first watch. I'm afraid we can't risk a fire. I do have a warm cloak that you may use. Mal'c retrieves a cloak from the group's supplies and hands it to Caylen (Cloak is +1 Fortitude saves to resist cold).
Mal'c |
"I'll share watch with Aak, you may share watch with Silx." Mal'c nods toward Shayne, before preparing his bedroll. He turns to Caylen and Sam before laying down.
"Wake me in a few hours or if anything concerns you."
First watch: Caylen and Sam; Second watch: Aak and Mal'c; Third watch: Shayne and Silx.
Aak |
A means to an end I guess. I was a product of an "unholy" union, not of a demonic kind but and unwanted variety. I travel only to find answers and protection. My mother was accosted by a tribe of Orcs and out came me. I was cast aside as a weakling and was to be nothing. It was my mother that gave up herself so I could have a chance to be something. I travel and fight for her I suppose. Protecting those around me like she protected me.
Aak looks up to the sky for a brief moment, wondering if her decision was worth it, wondering if she is okay or where she may be
Sorry for the rambling, what brings you to these parts Mal'c?

Leaning closer to Sam, Caylen's eyes are focused out towards the others with that borrowed, heavy cloak wrapped around her shoulders atop her own. Her tone in response to the old farmer is as hushed as his was.
"I hardly know them. They seem kind enough, if a bit trusting. But they worry me, that they're on the run from someone. They say this Tolin is a scoundrel of sorts, but it is their word alone we take on that. But... I don't feel any reason not to believe them. I just..."
Caylen sighs softly, then shakes her head and closes her eyes.
"The orc-man and the dark elf make me nervous. Even if they're much kinder than the stories say... it's hard not to remember them all the same. The halfling seems nice enough, though. A good song can go a long way to ease frayed spirits."
Mal'c |
Listening intently to Aak.
"An all to common tale. Pausing thoughtfully. They were from one of the nomadic tribes I take it? The monastery has records of encounters with orc. Perhaps we might be able offer you some clue. Carefully considering Aak's question. I've been in this area much of my life. I joined Burand in the keep at his request. He and his comrades have been tracking Tolin's movement. They knew he was in the area. Though the monastery is several days travel, I came into town only two days ago. "
Aak |
I think so, I was too young and not understanding much when I was cast out. On a related matter, who is Tolin, other than a man bent on destruction and power? Is there anything else that drives the mad man to do what he does? I wish to learn as much as possible about the man, should I ever come across him again in my travels. Or if I MUST face him to get my own answers in life.
Mal'c |
Looking into the distance silently for a moment. Mal'c begins to speak without looking at Aak, while he scans the distant horizon.
"Though he arrived in this area at least a year ago, he and his men have been heading west for some time. I cannot say where he came from. I only know that somewhere to the east he and his followers have a refuge of sorts. They blame the desolation that has spread over much of the eastern parts of our fair lands on those like you, Silx, and Shayne. They claim that if the land is 'purified' than the desolation will cease and the land will be resorted. These claims are false, but they use them to inspire the hatred and loyalty of their followers."

No worries. Long break wrapping up here for the family also.
Initiative rolls for everyone. I'll get a battle map worked up Sunday. I'll do initiatives for anyone who's missing Monday and we'll get things going then. If there are in character tactic suggestions feel free to toss those up before then so I can amend the map accordingly.

Sorry, had a busy last couple of days!
Perception Roll:
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Initiative Roll:
1d20 + 0 ⇒ (8) + 0 = 8
If I don't get a post up today Caylen is going to try and scramble up a tree since she is not really a melee person, but with a climb modifier of -2 she may need to be rescued from imminent toothy wolfdeath, which should be fun! :)
