While Inky cools her heels, Nina begins to rummage into her bag and pulls out a tanglefoot bag. "Hah! I knew I had one in there somewhere!"

Wasting little time, Bragget runs up behind Kibble and leapfrogs somewhat awkwardly into position on his back, "Onward Kibble!" He yells as he draws his flail and rides up the switch backs, saluting Nina on his way past for her graciousness in letting him go first. The brave knight comes to a halt right in front of the statuesque figure and looks up at it with steely eyes. "Not so tough now are you, huh?" He taunts, tapping it with his flail, "Come on! Let's see how you fare in fair combat..." He continues the relentless tapping with his flail, Braggett doing his best to annoy the creature as only a gnome can do. "Have at you!"

Kibble likewise does his best to harass the guardian, but snaps more at the air than at the construct.

Nina dismisses her grease, removing the obstacle for allies trying to reach their arrow-spewing foe.

Lord Braggett manages to clamber aboard his mount, and Sir Kibble lopes up to the graven guardian, nipping at its heels.

Birdlathan answers Erlathan's summons, and the celestial eagle tears into the graven guardian with its talons. Birdlathan's beak misses, and talons screech against the construct's hardened exterior.

The graven guardian's longbow lies next to its lifeless body, mundane now in all respects. The arrows the construct had fired vanished, as soon as Vegazi slew it.

The narrow path up the mountain beckons. Vegazi's mother, Kelseph, awaits...

"I've got two scrolls of protection from evil and a magic circle vs evil, which is very good at keeping out summoned evil creatures. Perhaps I'll set it up for those who like staying away from melee combat. I can use the protection scrolls on whoever will likely be taking the brunt of attacks." He eyeballs Braggett, Bishop, and Vegazi specifically.

Prot evil gives +2 resistance bonus to saves and +2 deflection to AC vs evil... won't stack with other such bonuses... so who's got what for bonuses so we maximize them? Vegazi I think has +1 to each with shield other.

Vegazi squats down to examine the fallen construct. She's pleased with her shot, but disappointed the graven guardian's bow is no better than her own.

"Kelseph is a warrior, not a caster. Like me, she prefers a bow. An ebony composite longbow with black feathers adorning the tips. When she draws it, you can smell the brimstone." She considers what she's said. "An archer rarely prefers to fight alone."

"This unholy alliance she's forged is ominous. Will we face more denizens from hell? We've seen everything from gaavs to a barbazu, hell ravens to hell hounds. What manner of devil would ally itself with Kelseph and command such infernal minions? I guess we'll find out."

She takes a long pull of water from a skin. "We have a chance to rid the world of a dire threat, and we should seize it. I'm as ready as I can be. I never expected to survive this long." She offers a rare, rueful smile. "You, friends, have a knack for keeping me alive."

"Well...yeah," Nina remarks, giving Vegazi a puzzled look. "That's part of what we do - keep our friends and allies alive! We Pathfinders aren't the only ones that matter in this story," she continues, grinning.

Once everyone seems ready to move onward, Nina quickly draws out her shielding wand and gives both herself and Inky two quick taps with it. "There, much better! But that's about the best I can do," she adds, frowning slightly. "I've used nearly all of my magics, except..."

The staircase is carved into the side of the mountain’s broad, flat peak. Dug into the red rock in the center of the plateau is a fifteen-foot-wide circle marked with diabolical sigils. Four iron braziers arranged around the circle burn with yellow fire. A rectangular stone altar south of the circle faces the path of switchbacks leading down the mountain.

The orc matriarch of the Hell’s Fury tribe, Kelseph, stands in the center of the summoning circle, relaxed but alert. She's wearing masterwork half-plate, grasping her bow in her left hand. A masterwork falchion is slung across her back, and a masterwork silver dagger is sheathed at her hip. On a chain around her neck hangs a red diamond pendant.

Alongside Kelseph stands a fallen angelic warrior. Wings stained black shear the air as her merciless eyes search for a threat. The creature wields a lengthy coil of rope in one hand and holds composite longbow in the other.

Circling overhead are four hell ravens, one near each of the iron braziers.

Fortunately for Bishop, most of the summit's denizens are far enough away from him that they fail to spot the rogue creeping up the stairs.

Bishop knowing that he is more than outmatched heads back down the steps towards the party.

Arriving there he shakes his head the look of worry, never seen before by any of those gathered, already sheds some light on the situation before them.

"Vegazi your mother is there. She is...waiting for us it seems. Beside her is what I must assume is the devil she is consorting with. The creature's appearance is one of complete contradiction. She looks like a creature that once must have graced the heavens but now her wings are black as a raven. She carries a whip much like one used by slavers to punish their subjects..." At the mention of slavers his face grows grim as his eyes sink back seething with hatred. "She is also armed with a bow. Four more of the ravens fly overhead circling just waiting. Also there is a large circle marked with symbols cut into ground. Whatever they have planned for us we must prepare for as best as we can."

Curse of the Crimson Throne

When Nina hears Bishop's description of the fallen angel, she recalls her grandmother's tales of a devil called an erinyes. A Medium-sized outsider with the devil, evil, extraplanar, and lawful subtypes, most erinyes stand just under 6 feet tall and weigh about 140 pounds, even with their black-feathered wings that stretch over 10 feet wide.

According to Ol' Gran, the erinyes are known by many names—the Fallen, the Ash Wings, and the Furies—the devils called erinyes mock the form of the angelic hosts in their exaction of vengeance and bloody justice. Executioners, not judges, erinyes alight upon the bladed eaves of Dis, Hell's cosmopolitan second layer, ever attentive for chances to soar into battle, whether in defense of Hell, on the whims of diabolical masters, or at the impassioned summons of jilted mortal summoners. All erinyes weave deadly living ropes from their own hair, which they use in battle to lift their foes into the air, mocking and condemning their victims for their transgressions before dropping them from great heights.

Erinyes appear as darkly beautiful angels, augmenting their sensuality with deliberate bruises and scars. Yet despite their beauty, erinyes are not seducers—they lack the subtlety and patience required for such fine emotional manipulations, and instead vastly prefer to solve their problems with swift and excruciating violence. Often, an erinyes will stay her hand before attempting to slay a foe simply so she can draw out the victim's suffering. Death is usually the only way to escape an erinyes's not-so-tender attentions, and the most powerful of these devils excel at keeping their enemies alive but helpless so as to extend their torment—many going as far as to keep their victims alive with magic. Rumors hold that the most powerful erinyes torturers have skills that allow their torment to continue even after their subject has died from their attentions.
