Roman Fomin |
If I act after Xianae has been dragged away, but before Jo, the spider is not in melee with anyone, right?
Flinching at the spiny legs lashing out at him, Roman tries to steady his breath before unloading two more arrows at the monstrous vermin.
Provoking AOO. Point blank shot, Rapid shot
Attack 1: 1d20 + 6 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 6 + 1 - 2 = 16
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Attack 2: 1d20 + 6 + 1 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 6 + 1 - 2 = 24
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
GM/Lictor Lane |
You are correct that no one is currently in melee and the spider only has 5-foot reach so you are safe without an AoO.
Roman's first shot bounces off a hard piece of carapace on the spider's back, but his second one strikes home in the spider's side, green goo splashing in Jo's eyes as he steps up and causing his swing to go wide.
Moondark fires again, but her bolt flies harmlessly over the arachnid as it crouches for an attack on Jo.
Round 2: Roman, Jo, Emmett, Moondark, Spider, Byron, Xianae, Coran
Damage Tracker (Spider): 27
Emmett Escheus |
Things could go sour very quickly...
Emmett lets a disturbing laughs come out of him: "If you so choose, you'll be drinking your own ooze!"
He takes out his crossbow and prepares a bolt.
MvA: Cackle.
StA: Prep crossbow.
Sorry, Internet was down...
GM/Lictor Lane |
No worries Emmett, glad to have you back.
The spider, growing desperate is its wounds continue to drip on the floors, snaps at Jo with its vicious mandibles, poison splattering on his arm and burning as it goes for his side. Jo feels the bite close on his recently healed ribs, snapping them once again and tearing at his flesh as well, leaving a gaping wound bleeding in his side.
Attack (Bite) 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
Attack (Bite due to Misfortune) 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Damage (Bite) 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Fort save (DC 17) or take 1d3 ⇒ 2 points of Con damage.
Xianae, on your turn, give me another Fort save (DC 17) or take 1d3 ⇒ 2 points of Con damage. And Coran, on your turn, same thing or take 1d3 ⇒ 1 points of Con damage.
Round 2: Roman, Jo, Emmett, Moondark, Spider, Byron, Xianae, Coran
GM/Lictor Lane |
Byron steps up and bringing his blade up in both hands, stabs swiftly down, driving the weapon right through the spider's head and nearly pinning it to the ground. The horrific creature jerks, legs spasmodic for a moment and then it goes still and collapses onto the ground.
Combat Over
Xianae, Coran, and Jo. You each need to make Fort saves at DC 17 until you have either made 2 saves or until 6 save attempts have passed. Xianae has already failed 2 of her 6 saves. Coran has failed 1 of 6. Jo is still at 0 of 6. Each time you fail, you take 1d3 of Con damage.
Xianae |
Fortitude Save : 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Fortitude Save : 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Fortitude Save : 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Fortitude Save : 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Seriously?!
Constitution Damage : 2 = 2
Constitution Damage : 1d3 ⇒ 1
Constitution Damage : 1d3 ⇒ 1
Terrible Saves, but got VERY lucky on the Damage. That could have been me dead! Total of -4 more.
Hit Points : -4 / 11
Constitution score : 6 / 14
If my Total Hit Points are less, please tell me and I will re-adjust them. I think the DiceBot hates me, but realised if I got all 3's on my Constitution damage that may seem suspicious. That's right, I'm paranoid now! :)
Byron Radanavich |
Con damage poison is nasty, as each failed save reduces your Fort save, and therefore your ability to save against it in subsequent rounds :-/
Casting worried glances in the directions of all those wounded by the spiders, as they shiver, sweat, and turn pale, Byron gingerly conducts a search of the room...
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15.
Coran Ven den Heuvel |
I have 3 more bursts which I am going to use but have nothing for the poison I have selective channel so only on my allies.
After looking over Xianae's wounds and his own and the severity of them and call forth his bursts from Cayden hoping his blessing will help with the spiders bites.
1d6 ⇒ 4
1d6 ⇒ 6
1d6 ⇒ 4
Emmett Escheus |
Emmett stays in the hallway, though he scans the room for magical auras.
Xianae |
"If I get's this kill then the chief's will be proud's of me! I will get's ..." With a gasp I open my eyes, breathing heavily. The first sight I see is Coran standing over me and everyone else looking weary. "Where'd the Ogre go's?" I try to stand up but fail a couple of times, landing back on the ground hard. "I feel's drained 'n' ... 'n'... fragile... What's happened?"
I finally manage to stand up, using my axe as a support. Even though I am standing I am a little wobbly on my feet and rock every now and then. So I remain next to the wall, using that to support me.
I'm Jo |
Jo's subsequent saves:
Con - 13
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Con damage = 1d3 ⇒ 2
Con - 11
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Con damage = 1d3 ⇒ 3
Con - 8
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Con damage = 1d3 ⇒ 2
Con - 6
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
Con damage = 1d3 ⇒ 1
Con - 5
1d20 ⇒ 17
-20 Hit Points in con damage.
HPs: -10 (Does this mean I am dead since my Con is at 5?)
Con = 5/15
With Coren's healing burst I am at HPs: 4
Geez... that was pleasant. Methinks we better get out of dodge with the two front liners gone.
GM/Lictor Lane |
Yep, you're not dead yet...kinda hard to pull off the required accent and intonation over the interwebs. Xianae is right. Having your hp hit your negative Con score, which isn't going to happen because of Coran's channeling or Con reduced to zero is required to kill you. So everyone lives...for now...mua ha ha.
Byron sees signs that there are at least two corpses cocooned in the spider's webs 15 feet up in the air at the top of the ceiling. He also finds the door to the north to be jammed shut. It doesn't seem to be locked.
Coran Ven den Heuvel |
Coran looks at the to warriors in their weakened state laughing weakly "It wasn't Orges it was spiders with some sort of foul ichor to weaken. Coran shakes his head as a worried look covers his face "We are going to have to run, neither you or Jo are in a condition to fight on. And if there are more these creature in here we might be in worse condition."
There Doctor's Orders we have to leave.
Xianae |
Oh, I just realised what you meant Jo. Hmm, that would be DM ruling. Normally you have to reach your Constitution score in negatives to die, which for you would normally be -15 Hit Points. But seeing as your Constitution has been reduced to 5, that means you have to go to -10 Hit Points(as that is the minimum) which you are currently at.
Lets hope that GM Lictor/Lane feels like being nice.
I'm Jo |
Jo will take the Gods smiling on him even though he does not follow them. Although we need to look into the GM's Dice. They were loaded the last battle!
Jo grabs his chest and groans long and deep. "Ugh....felt bigger den ogres Xianae, more like giants."
For once Jo is not hungry. "Jo needs bed" he thinks to himself.
"We gotta go. Jo not in any condition to fight on. Ugly goblins can wait for Jo's hammer."
Jo staggers to his feet and makes for the hallway.
Emmett Escheus |
Emmett stands on the doorway, concentrating, scanning for auras: "Hmm what? Away? Sure... Let me. Just... Finish. This. Ah! Sorry, yesyes, let us leave and come back another day. I see your injuries go beyond mere flesh..."
Roman Fomin |
"I think we should at least check out the unfortunate victims of the spiders."
Roman searches the floor for any items which might have gotten stuck in the cobwebs Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14 before turning his attention to the ceiling. He unhooks his grappling hook and ties it to the rope, before throwing it upwards at the cocoons and then pulling with all his weight.
Moondark |
Moondark watches the Jo' Green-ish Giant stagger away. "Are we retreating? I guess killer weeds and giant spiders explain why we didn't find any guards back here. That is some pretty potent poison if it nearly took the big guy out. I wonder if will preserve. Does anyone know how to extract it?"
Coran Ven den Heuvel |
Coran looks at the fallen Cocoon and then at Moondark "Retreating is the plan Neither Jo or Xianae are not in the condition to keep fighting. As for that toxin it might stay if you cork it in a bottle." He hands Moondark the empty potion bottle "you try it in here."
Moondark |
Moondark stands several moments concentrating on the dead spider before sighing, "I don't even know which parts are the poison parts. Oh well, I'll have to look into that. You mind if I keep the bottle, Coran?"
"I wouldn't mind looking behind the door, but I don't think I'm strong enough to unjam it."
GM/Lictor Lane |
Byron successfully cuts the webbing away from the first body and pulls it back. Its probably been for at least a week. Looks like a slight woman, dressed in a short tunic. You search the body and find a backpack with a spellbook, a spell component pouch, a dagger and 17 gold.
He repeats the process to bring down the second body and finds it also dead about a week. This one has leather armor and a set of thieves' tools in a pouch along with 39 gold pieces.
Byron Radanavich |
Sadness suffuses Byron's countenance, as he goes through the possessions of the fallen.
There, but for the grace of the Gods, lie us.
He packs away the mundane items (If anyone wants any of them, feel free to shout out :-) ), but handles the spellbook gingerly.
"Will this be of use to anyone?"
Xianae |
I look to everyone who is starting to retreat, "I'm still's good ta ... ta ... ta go's on. Let me's see that door." I lean against the door and attempt to pull it open, after which I fall the the floor again. "Fine, something's wrong with me. But don't tell's Chief, he'd have me beaten's for being weak's if he found out's."
Strength check : 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
I start to stand up again, slowly and look to Byron, "No use to me's." I slowly walk to Byron and once I get to him, I use his shoulder as a support as I whisper into his ear, "I can't read's." I look to Emmett, "Emm, ya likes books, don't ya?" With that I start to head back to the door and remain next to Coran. I nod to him somehow knowing I wouldn't be here if it was for him. "Shaman."
Emmett Escheus |
"Hmmm? Why yes, I guess I like books..." says a focused Emmett as he looks intently at the double doors. He turns: "Wh- Oh my! Yes! Yes! I like books, especially that kind. I might have a use for it." His thrush companion, somehow feeling the witch's pulse go through the roof, peeks out from his sleeve.
Emmett stores the book: "The doors can wait if we 're not up for it. Wisdom says head home. Let's watch out for those wolves!"
GM/Lictor Lane |
In her weakened state, Xianae has trouble opening the door. You successfully exit tha manor house through the conservatory. Outside, the clouds have cleared and it has turned out to be a reasonably good day. You successfully pass back through the overgrown landscape and back to the street, through now broken front gate or over the wall as each prefers. Where to next?
Coran Ven den Heuvel |
"No Moondark I don't mind keep it." not wanting to admit that he wouldn't put anytrhing having to do with healing in there after the poison tainted it.
Coran tries to to figure out if the group could survive another encounter, if something was hiding behind that door. "If we are going to open the door let's make it quick." Coran looks cautiously around hoping Whitechin is not going to ambush the group while they figure it out.
Perception 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
looking a bit embarassed he says "Please Xianae just call me Coran" he smiles at the young woman
Moondark |
Moondark gives a final glance at the dead arachnids. "Are you heading back to town? I have a friend that's close by. She's a bit of aswamp witch, but use to taking care of people. She might be able to help Jo and then we won't have to deal with the Runndottari again. Actually, she could probably get some of this spider poison. Let's go see Mother Muddlumm."
She draws her dagger to work on the spider and then the small girl looks a bit ill herself. "Hey, Byron, you wouldn't mind chopping this spider's head off for me would you?"
Byron Radanavich |
"Of course."
Byron lines-up his blade perpendicular to the spider's 'neck', and with a single clean sqing, severs it completely.
I am happy to try for what is beyond the door, or to move on. My argument is that the spiders effectively prevented access to the room beyond, and with them gone, someone else might clear the rom by the time we get back in a few days... That magic aura was very tempting ;-)
Moondark |
"WITCH!!!! Jo not like no Witch! No Witch cast magic on Jo!!!! Jo says adamantly and then quick winces from the excertion grabbing his rib cage with his arm.
Moondark rolls her eyes, "Maybe witch isn't really the right term. How about a really nice little grandmother that can help heal you? kinda like Coran." She bends to squeamishly wrap the spider head in a cloak for portability.
GM/Lictor Lane |
Byron manages to shove on the door enough that a heavy object behind the door is pushed back with the scrape of wood on the wood floor. With the door open, you can see that someone had shoved a couple bookcases up against the door. The room looks like it was a smaller annex to the library, perhaps once used to store some of the more precious books or perhaps a small storage room.
Inside is a dead body, dressed in leathers and a green tunic and cloak. A large chunk of flesh is missing from his side, the tissue suffering from extreme necrosis. The man looks like he is in his mid-20s with dark brown hair and a tidy beard. A crossbow lies next to his body and you can see he has a quiver with about 20 bolts on his back.
