Markus Coffinborn
"What if the afterlife is not what you imagine?" begins Markus, "What if you are only worms and it is only when you reach your chosen lord's domain that you truly realize your place in the universe? To crawl in the mud, stomped on by greater things than yourselves on their road to be killed by us as well?"
Markus layers his words with magic, filling his enemies with doubt and forcing them to re-evaluate their life decisions.
Cast cause fear on cultist 5, assuming she has a glaive still. DC 16 Will save partial. Duration: 1d4 ⇒ 2
GM Kiora
The cultists' resolve cannot be broken.
"You are wrong, mage! I will rise as a great minotaur - the chosen children of Baphomet!"
Note: minotaurs aren't demons, but these guys aren't the brightest (I mean look at their life choices :( )
Valaria is up.
Yep, all three cultists still have glaives.
Cultist 5 will save (Grazed): 1d20 + 6 - 1 ⇒ (20) + 6 - 1 = 25
Valaria Alazario
Valaria shrugs. "We gave you a chance. When you're suffering for eternity, remember that you made your choice."
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
Valaria rushed forward with lightning speed, dashing in close to the cultists before they can bring their glaives to bear and launches an attack.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 5 + 1 = 11
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Targeting Cultist 6
GM Kiora
Valaria hops nimbly over the barricades and dodges the cultist's glaives. She buries her starknife in the wounded woman's neck, snuffing them out. The cultist crumples to the ground with a thud.
Valaria acrobatics to hop barricades: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21 otherwise it'd be a full move to get to that spot
Valaria KO's cultist 6.
Ehren is up.
Ehren Ferron
As the battle in the other room rages on, Ehren looks over his shoulder, turning his attention to the fallen Hosilla. He slowly saunters over, looking down on the cultist leader before kneeling down, checking whether she is still alive. If she has not bled out already, Ehren will sigh before attempting to staunch her bleeding. She's a zealot, but she might know something... and if worse comes to worst, I will finish it myself...
Heal: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
GM Kiora
Ehren stabilizes Hosilla before she bleeds to death. She lays on the ground, unconscious.
Wenduag fires off an arrow over Hrut's shoulder at the rear cultist. She attempts to dodge the shot, but it is in vain.
Wenduag vs Cultist 5 (Bless, Point-Blank, Into Melee): 1d20 + 7 + 1 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (9) + 7 + 1 + 1 - 4 = 14
Wenduag damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Wenduag deals 7 damage to Cultist 5, wounding her.
Ary is up.
Ary Bishop
As the blade digs into Ary's leg, she stumbles, and as it keeps going, she falters slightly. Opting not to abandon her position and leave her allies in greater danger, Ary stays where she is. However, she assumes a defensive stance, placing an emphasis on her own guard, which may get in the way of guarding her fellows. "You guys do know that demon worshipers come back as tasty maggots, and only those that are lucky enough get to grow up to be demons, right?
I believe that's +4 AC from soft cover (thanks Li'an!) and +2 for fighting defensively. This also translates into a further decrease for my Bodyguard feat of 4 (so +2 BAB, +4 Str, -3 Critical, -4 Fighting Defensive for a total of -1.)
Hrut Ingvarson

+1 from standing next to me also.
GM Kiora
The cultists ignore Ary, focusing on the fact that they are being surrounded. The closer cultist frowns, realizing that in such close quarters the glaive is no longer useful. He tosses his glaive to the ground, and calls for Baphomet's blessing into his gauntlet. Unholy Blessing
Round 7
Anevia fires off a quick pair of arrows into the fray. The second one finds its mark in the cultist's shoulder. She hisses and pulls it out, before swiping at Hrut, but it merely slides across his armor, leaving a deep scratch in its surface.
Anevia Shortbow vs Cultist 5 (Bless, Point-Blank, Rapid Shot, Into Melee): 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 1 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (7) + 6 + 1 + 1 - 2 - 4 = 9
Anevia Shortbow vs Cultist 5 (Bless, Point-Blank, Rapid Shot, Into Melee): 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 1 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (13) + 6 + 1 + 1 - 2 - 4 = 15

Ary AoO#1 -> Hrut: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (7) - 1 = 6
Cultist 5 vs Hrut (Wounded): 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (8) + 5 - 2 = 11
Anevia has 6 arrows left. She deals 2 damage to Cultist 5
Hrut is up.
Hrut Ingvarson
Bringing his warhammer high, Hrut brings it down hard on the head of the closest cultist with renewed effort,
"Corrupter! Consider yourself cleansed by Torag!"
Shards of Iron Strike
Attack#7/Damage: 1d20 + 7 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (17) + 7 + 1 - 1 = 241d8 + 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + (5) + 4 = 15

Hrut slams his warhammer down on the head of the male cultist, shattering his skull. The cultist screams and stumbles, but stays barely conscious. The lantern archon glitters, firing off two more beams of light at the male cultist, searing out his eyes. Finally, the evil man falls to the ground, defeated.
Its work done, the lantern archon vanishes into nothing.
Lantern Archon vs Cultist 7 (Into Melee): 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (11) + 3 - 4 = 10
Lantern Archon vs Cultist 7 (Into Melee): 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (20) + 3 - 4 = 19
Lantern Archon vs Cultist 7 Crit Confirm (Into Melee): 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (19) + 3 - 4 = 18
Lantern Archon: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 1) = 7
Hrut and the lantern archon team up to KO cultist 7
Li'an is up.
Li'an Va'ardalia
As Hrut and the Archon take down the cultist in front of her, Li'an moves forward to assault the remaining cultist.
Attack(Hit-Bless;Damage-Alter Self: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 1 = 101d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Markus tries to ensure that the final cultist can do nothing to harm any of his compatriots - hopefully at least one of his spells today works. He wills the cultist to cease all movement.
Casting daze. DC 14 Will to negate.

Valaria wastes no more words as she attacks again.
On-hand Attack: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 3 + 1 = 14
Off-hand Attack: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 3 + 1 = 11
On-hand Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2
Off-hand Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4
GM Kiora
Valaria pinpoints the cultist's weak spots, and unleashes a volley of blows with uncanny accuracy, slicing deep into the final cultist. Ary moves forward, ready to work as a wall to protect her allies.
Round 8
Anevia unleashes a final arrow straight into the cultist's forehead. The woman falls to the ground, dead.
Anevia vs Cultist 5 (Bless, Point-Blank, Into Melee): 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (20) + 6 + 1 + 1 - 4 = 24

Li'an Va'ardalia
With the fall of the last cultist Li'an sheathed Lleuad and turned to Ary, placing her hand on Ary's shoulder to steady her. "Are you alright?" she asks, sounding concerned. "I think Ary could use some healing," she responded to Valaria.
Li'an looks at Wendaug wondering how things would have gone if she hadn't listened to reason. "Thank you, Wendaug. If you hadn't placed your trust in Lann and the rest of us, we'd likely all be sacrifices to Baphomet now," she said sincerely. "You risked not only yourself, but your people, and for that I am indebted. I can't speak for us all, though I don't doubt they feel the same, but if there's anything I can do to repay the debt, please tell me."

"I'll be fine, Fen'wen. Just a flesh wound. A really large, really deep flesh wound." Ary nods, but doesn't deny the help and seems glad for it. She steadily drips blood across her gear and onto the ground. "Dammit. I just cleaned that..." She says, glaring at her boot. "Thanks for covering for me, guys." she segues randomly again.
She doesn't mention anything regarding saving the cultists, that being one of the last things on her mind. It was probably the right thing to do... And more mouths meant more stories, but she felt so tired right now. She shuffles back towards Horgus.

Wenduag nods to Li'an, moving out to the main dining room with her hunters. "You owe us nothing." She turns to Lann. "...I'm sorry about Tellia. You knew her. When they started being more...open about their plans above, she couldn't keep her mouth shut."
Lann nods, slumping onto a seat with a sigh. "She... was a passionate woman. I forgive you for your actions. We were all trying to do what was best for Neathholm after all." He looks up at the heroes, smiling slightly. "Thank you so much for risking your lives for us."

"Hosilla was crazy and needed to go down," Val says with a shrug. "We just did what needs to be done. No need to thank us. And sorry for that whole 'cultist' act coming in. We needed to get close enough to get at Hosilla without carving through all of you too."
Ary Bishop
1 person marked this as a favorite.
"It was scary." Ary offered. "I didn't know if you'd be on our side or theirs. Then Butterfly made me worried I'd followed her into a trap there for a bit. That'd have been really bad. Cultists... are unfortunate. There's never any way to tell if they chose the life or the life chose them. Hard to believe you can redeem someone who wielded a dark god's power, though. Have to do nasty things to get it." she went on. "Speaking of... magic wand over there. Does them having made it make it demonic in nature... Or would it be a good idea to let Avi hang onto it? It summoned a floating glaive." She figured that might be enough to go on for Avi. She certainly didn't know much about wands.
GM Kiora
Aravashnial considers Ary's question for a moment. "Spiritual Weapon? The wielder chooses the form of the weapon, typically the holy weapon of their deity," he replies.
Didn't bother rolling for Aravashnial's knowledge since he literally crafts wands for a living.
Wenduag evaluates her men. "Some of my people are injured. I'd like to return to Neathholm and ask for Chief Sull's forgiveness...and hopefully get them taken care of. We also need to bury Mela." She turns to the heroes. "Are you coming with us?"
Lann shrugs. "I don't know. I believe they are hoping to take the tunnel to the surface. Speaking of, Crel still has those bodies you had him carry. Would you like me to send for him?"
Wenduag thinks for a moment. "Well, be careful. Hosilla summoned these... foul little things, when she killed Tellia. They are guarding the tunnel exit. Small, fat creatures with claws." Wenduag points to the closer door. "That room is where Hosilla set up her office." Wenduag points to the farther door. "That door leads to the kitchens. We have a lot of dried dire rat meat if you are hungry. If you leave the way you came and go straight when you reach the common room, you will get to the tunnel that leads to the surface."

GM Kiora
1 person marked this as a favorite.
The other two dying cultists bleed out, leaving only the male cultist that killed Mela, Hosilla, and Uziel alive but unconscious.
Anevia frowns. "That's a lot of bodies to carry. Maybe we should leave them here and send someone to retrieve them later once we meet back up with the other Crusaders?"
There are ten cultists total: eight grunts, Uziel, and Hosilla.
The grunt cultists are all obviously armed with masterwork glaives (10 lb each), mundane spiked gauntlets (1 lb each), and masterwork chain shirts (25 lb each).
Li'an Va'ardalia
"While I'm sure the weapons and armor might be of use up top, wouldn't they be just as useful down here for Neathholm? I think we'd be better leaving as much as we can for them. We should do a thorough search of the rest of the area though, perhaps Hosilla had other things here as well," Li'an said, clearly of the opinion that lugging an armory's worth of gear up to the surface would pose a significant problem for them.
"As for the cultists, I think we'll have enough trouble if we're bringing Hosilla and the Tiefling along to face justice up top without dragging an additional two corpses. I don't suppose Seer Opoli has a way to preserve the corpses? If so it might be best to preserve them and send for them later."
Valaria Alazario
Valaria chuckles at Ary's surprise. "I tell stories for a living. If I couldn't convincingly act out my parts, I'd have starved to death years ago. Don't worry I'm firmly on your side."
She looks around at the piles of bodies. "Yeah. There's a few too many bodies for us to start moving them around. Let's worry about them later." She looks back at the mongrelmen. "Those sound like demons. Can you guard the prisoners for us if we need to fight through a few demons on the way up? They might try to get clever and sneak away while we're busy. Actually, are we going to wake them up now and interrogate them, or are we going to carry them and wait?"
Ary Bishop
"I've got no idea. And yeah, the Underfolk can have whatever they can use. Hauling it all up would be nearly impossible." Ary shakes her head. "If the folks don't mind a bunch of corpses sitting around, then dragging them topside, then that's definitely amicable. Actually, it'd be kind of neat to have a contingent of flavor-wielding Underfolk on our side."
"And yeah, Avi. Spiritual Weapon. Would you be able to use that at all?"

"I'm going to search Hosilla's office, I can take a look at it after we've searched, or Markus can take a look at it for you. I suspect how useful it would be will depend a lot on how powerful a wand it is. If Master Aravashnial can't put it to use I might be able to use it."
Li'an moves over to the door Wendaug had pointed out as Hosilla's office. She briefly checks to make sure there's not any form of trap on it before proceeding in.

"In their current state, it could be hours before they wake up," Ehren says, shaking his head. "Sooner if they receive more healing, but perhaps that would not be... wise. So yes, it would be best to leave them here for the time being. If the Chief's proposal to the crusade goes well, it should be easy enough for them to be retrieved at some point."

Bless wears off
Aravashnial drums his fingers on the stone table. "Divine magic and arcane magic is different. I'm not well versed in the former." Also he doesn't have UMD, which is kinda weird given his profession :p
Horgus sighs, slumping in his seat. "I just want to go home. I'm so tired of being underground."
Wenduag looks at Valaria and nods. "Sure. It'd be our pleasure."
Lann thinks about Li'an's question. "Yeah, Seer Opoli can preserve bodies. I'll make sure someone asks."
Li'an scours the door for traps. Thankfully, it wasn't trapped. She was really sure about this.
Li'an then searches the office. Inside, a stone pedestal holds a copper brazier aloft in the center of the room. Against the left wall, an enormous pile of animal furs and thick quilts serves as a bed. Sheathed weapons and stone carvings adorn the walls. The right half of the room holds a wooden desk, beneath which stands a large, thin iron lockbox. It is locked. Disable Device DC 25 to pick

"There we go," she thinks as she adds another pick. "The lock is difficult, but still solvable."
Disable Device: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
"That's it, careful now... Only a couple to go," she thinks, grinning. It was taking way more time than usual, but she wasn't going to give up now that she only had a couple pins to go.
Disable Device: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
Li'an shifts her weight and lifts her head to try to get a better view, having forgotten she was under a desk. A loud thump issues from the room followed by a cry of pain and the clatter of small metal tools on the ground. "Kül və alova meşə!" Li'an calls out angrily as she begins picking up her lockpicks.
"The forest to flames and ashes!"
Disable Device: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29
Exasperated, she pulls out Lleuad and gives the lock a violent whack with its hilt, causing several of the lock's mechanisms to break. Starting again with her tools, she proceeds to deftly solve the now simplified problem, popping the lock open with ease.

But most curiously of all, Valaria finds a note in Hosilla's pocket. She reads it aloud:
"Hosilla: You will remain, for the time being, in Kenabres. But know this. The city's days are numbered. Seek a place of safety - the underground den of your mongrel lackeys should suffice to keep you safe from the devastation to come. I shall assume command of Drezen shortly, and once Vorlesh has finished with the wardstone and Kenabres is no longer of interest to us, you are to return to my side. Excellent news regarding the salvage of Yaniel's sword from the museum as well - bring it with you, for I believe this weapon could be quite useful once we corrupt it. Before you leave for Drezen, stop by the three safe houses (Nyserian Manor, Topaz Solutions, and the Tower of Estrod - the passphrase to the Tower remains "I've new material for the archives," for now) to ensure no evidence remains behind. May Lord Deskari and Lord Baphomet watch over you! S.V."

Ary just shrugs back, "Not a big deal. If things get scary, I'll drink that potion. If they don't get scary, we get to keep it, and nothing lost, eh?"
She looked towards the room, "Everything okay?" and then she heard a thump, and the response. "Alright. That answers that."
XD at probably finding the key just now to that box.
Then she hears what Valaria found, "F$+#." she says, allowing how worn down she is to influence her speech habits, "Good news, and bad news, I guess. They did get the sword... but in theory, they still have it here. Do you... think maybe Irabeth's sword was stolen by these guys, too? Maybe the sneaky invisible tiefling?"

After much effort, Li'an manages to crack open the lockbox . She finds:
- A small leather pouch containing an assortment of semiprecious gemstones.
- 2 scrolls. They are different.
- A long, thin darkwood sword case.
The sword case is unlocked. Inside lies a breathtaking longsword - a weapon of obviously superior craftsmanship with a razor-sharp blade that appears to be made of shining gold.

Li'an looks at the sword case curiously. Taking it gingerly out of the box she stands up, watching her head this time, and places it carefully on the desk. Opening the lid she sees a blade the likes of which she's not seen before.
"Ary, weren't you talking about a gold blade yesterday?" she says, sounding quite surprised. "You might want to come see this."
Ehren Ferron
Ehren claims the vial of antitoxin, adding it to his cobbled-together kit of healing items.
He then gathers the small collection of potions and scrolls they collected together, and attempts to identify them all one by one.

Ary, already suspecting (and perhaps catching on a little, due to the note, pushes herself from the table and moves into the other room. There's a slight limp in her step, and her boot makes an occasional squelching sound, but other than that, she seems to be ignoring the worst of it.
She stops when she enters the room and sees the sword. She nods to Li'an. "That's the sword from the mural in my dreams alright. So... the cultists are desecrating paladin swords. Maybe they're making some dark knights of their own like Vhane?"
She moves over to examine the blade more closely, wistfully. "We'll definitely have to return this to the Crusades. I think Iomedae herself wanted to make sure we retrieved it. Good job, Fen'wen." she smiled to the woman. "That is, as long as they aren't going to shove it in a fricking museum where it's not going to see any use."
I think we're gonna let the mongrelmen have first dibs on the weapons and armor; it's heavy, and even though it's valuable, they have as much or more to gain from it.

Valaria organizes her findings into piles. One for weapons, one for armor, one for potions, one for scrolls, one for alchemical items and the rest in another. "Okay. Well, that's all I've got. We're going to have to pick and choose what we're carrying. Someone may want to identify these potions and scrolls though. I also found a note that seems to be Hosilla's orders. It's got a list of safe houses we'll need to deal with."

"You heard Hosilla. They're collecting blades with even a glimmer of magic. And no blade wielded by a Paladin of Iomedae inspires morale while it rests on a pedestal. A sword that isn't being used might as well be smelted for horse shoes or nails. At least then it'd be serving its purpose of protecting people." she says, surprisingly irritated at the Crusade's handling of the sword. She mutters a short prayer for guidance, remembering not to question her superiors... even if they were being moronic.
She reaches out and picks Radiance up to examine it more closely, and notices its shimmer. "Do you mind if I carry this, Fen'wen?" she asks, "I understand if you want to wield Radiance alongside your sword, but I think that it's better off used; besides..." she slowly smirks. "It's a little better crafted than mine, even if it doesn't glow in the dark."
