Thank the Green, the monkeys survived!
Isilme
Turning her back to the hag, she continues the conversation through the message spell. Isilme replies, "We should find a large enough clearing that the hag will be forced out into the open, far from any easy cover. We'll need to fake needing to turn around to pick something up at some point so Val can get close to the Hag, at which point I'll use borrow skill and Desna's blessing to lift the heartstone off her hopefully unnoticed.. At that point we can wait for her etherealness to drop, or attempt to dispel it outright."
Valaria Alazario
"Err... Isilme. How do we steal something from someone we can't touch?" Val points out.
Hinagiku
Hinagiku nods as Markus counts the answer he gives her and still misses one. A strange and slightly mean joke somewhat comes to her mind, which she quickly shakes her head to get rid of the intruding thought.
At the mention of the bound horror, Hinagiku tenses up a little. Allying with onis simply seemed wrong. Last time she had seen it she had needed all her focus to avoid slaying it, but now, maybe there would be time? If so could they even do anything to it…. Galcor’s weapon had barely worked.
Hinagiku turns around to look at Ary, the face was new, but she did recognize the look in the woman’s eyes… which made her wonder whether the same could be said of herself… No matter… how could she make her concerns about the bound horror known? She hoped the half-elf would understand her concern… she must have the same.
”I do not feel well accepting the oni’s help. However, I will do my best to fight the monster when needed. But, I do not feel so well… I might not be as effective as I used to be.”
She might not fully understand the magic behind the plan, but Hinagiku had enough information to understand when to be prepared, so she nodded in understanding at Isilme.
Valaria Alazario
"Right. I forgot we had that."
GM Kiora
So we have a few conflicting plans going on here:
First, what are you doing
Isilme is proposing she use blink, nondetection, and invisibility to steal the hag's heart stone, which would prevent her from being ethereal.
Valaria proposed Sosiel use dispel magic, likely with the Horror's see invisibility
Which do you guys wanna do? Or some other ideas?
-----
Next, there's the question of where to do it:
Markus proposed going to a temple and getting some paladins/clerics to help. Hinagiku and Valaria agreed.
Ehren disagreed, wanting to not have too many people around, so that she cannot shapechange in a crowded situation.
Isilme is in line with Ehren's idea, wanting an isolated clearing to fight in.
Right now going to a crowded place is the majority vote - does anyone want to switch their vote?
Valaria Alazario
With Isilme's plan, we can pretty much do that anywhere. If we have a way to steal its stone, then we can do this on our own.
Markus Coffinborn
1 person marked this as a favorite.
Just to be clear, I do not want to involve anybody else, except for Aron/Sosiel/any other existing allies. I believe we can handle the hag as-is, and agree with Isilme's plan. That seems like it has the greatest chance of success to me. I think we should get the Horror to use see invisibility on Valaria, Ary and Sosiel. Sosiel and Ehren (through inspired spell) can attempt to dispel or counter any invisibility attempt made by the hag once she becomes Material, while Ary and Valaria don't need to worry about the invisibility. I and Isilme will be on Buff Duty(TM).
Honestly, we can do it... right now, out here in the plains.
Hinagiku
Should we be considering our weapons and armors attuned? If not, we won't be able to slay the hag.
Edit: I would still opt for the city with a bunch of paladins, just in case things go wrong. Hinagiku will go with what the group decides though.
Markus Coffinborn
During the preparation of the plan, Markus really has nothing to do - no preparatory spells to cast, no potions to drink or armor to don, no weapons to draw. He dare not even prepare a reactive spell for fear that it would give away their plan.
Instead, he just waits... near the center of the group, ready as he'll ever be to throw his ancestors' blessings over the group. "So." he says. "Isilme's got the buck now, but... is everybody ready to get into a battle? Should be short, but everybody needs to be prepared. Mentally, I mean."
Kiora, do you have any kind of record of what exactly we know about the hag? I think we're all metagaming a little bit, and it's not unreasonable that we made a complete Knowledge check, but I don't remember whether we did or not.
Isilme
Well, I won't be able to buff until it's already come out of etherealness, in fact we (as a group) can't really buff before then because she's got detect magic up all the time and will realize something is up. non-detection means I can get close enough to steal, but we'll still need to get Valaria within 1 move (30' stealthed) of the hag for me to pull it off because I have 1 round in which to borrow skill sleight of hand. Using Blessing of Desna I'll have an automatic 30 to the check, which gives us a 70% chance of her failing to detect the theft.
Before we start we should get things ironed out very well. If we don't we'll miss our chance, 'cause I've only got one scroll of borrow skill. I'll also need time to spot the heartstone on her so I can snag it immediately.
Plan:
Travel until Ehren verifies discretely that she's well out in the open, as we get to that point I'll try to move out of line of sight and invis/non-detection to drop back and spot the heartstone.
The group will stop as if they'd forgotten something and Val/Ary will double back searching the ground, hopefully she'll be relaxed enough about it that she'll just stay put instead of falling back. When Val is within 30', I'll start the final steps, casting Blink and then Borrow Skill, closing and stealing the heartstone. At that point we open fire with everything we've got.
Ehren Ferron
Isilme maxed her knowledge check back in the tavern in Gundrun - it's not entirely unreasonable to say that we basically have full access to her statblock.
Valaria Alazario
I can work with this plan.
Ehren Ferron
Sounds good to me.
"If we are doing this, I am going to tell my father to go on without us," Ehren says, not directly addressing Markus' question. He was confident that his father could be of help if they brought him into the loop, but keeping his Ellyn and Audrey safe was more important. He did not want the hag anywhere near them. "After that..." He wiggles his fingers around a bit, well aware that he had lost several of his spells. The ones he had left would have to make do.
GM Kiora
Kiora, do you have any kind of record of what exactly we know about the hag? I think we're all metagaming a little bit, and it's not unreasonable that we made a complete Knowledge check, but I don't remember whether we did or not.
Isilme used Loremaster to get the full statblock. I believe I've mentioned before if you manage to get all 4 spoilers, the intent is you have access to the whole statblock.
Ideally I try to put all the important stuff IN the spoilers so you dont HAVE to do that but I'm not perfect and niche questions happen so...
GM Kiora
Their plan in place, Ehren moves off to ask his father and sisters leave without them - they had something to attend to first before heading back into the city. "Alright, but don't you dare leave without saying goodbye to us! I don't care how busy you are!" Audrey insists, giving him one last hug before heading out onto the road.
Afterwards the group sets off, Ary steering the wagon and carthorses as she usually does. The clearing connects to a small trail that leads out onto the main road. Inbetween the forests and the city are a couple miles of open plains. It's cold, mostly because of the wind - the heroes bundle up in their black furs and trudge out. There aren't any people visible out on the open road - with the recent attacks this is to be expected, and even on a good day most people travel in and out of Nerosyan on the river.
Eventually you're far enough from the trees that they are only visible from a distance. It would be quite the run to get back there.
Exactly what your formation is at the moment - whether you're in the wagon, in front of it, to its sides, or behind, is up to you but I do want you to clearly define this.

"Right next to Valaria," Ehren murmurs through Isilme's spell, keeping track of the hag as subtly as possible. It helped that he could not actually see her.
Ehren is at the wagon's side. Have to get working on those calluses. :P
Ary Bishop
Yeah... I'm not sure I can do this. An entire scene played out into a scene change while I was at work. I just... can't. I'll keep trying but..
@Bound Horror: "What do you mean 'Chaotic or Evil'. Why specifically those?" she didn't react in nearly the same way as she had before. It was clear she wanted him dead... but it was also clear that no one else was interested in trying... and a good leader listened to their soldiers.
I really have nothing else, unless someone spoke directly to me and I forgot it.

Markus answers for the Horror - as tolerant as he is of the thing's presence, it grates on him on a personal level. "Night hags only target creatures with a certain moral or ethical bent. That is, creatures who share their own moral or ethical bent - chaos and evil."
I'm ready to fight!
Ary Bishop
"So... why not target things that are specifically chaotic -and- evil? Would that not be strictly better..?" Ary responds after only a smidge of thought.
GM Kiora
Markus! Where are you? Side of wagon? In wagon? Front? Back?
Earlier..
The Bound Horror grins nastily, adding on to Markus' comment. "Oh, yes, that's the half of it. Truth is they sell those souls in Hell and in the Abyss - there's powerful magic that can be conducted with the possession of mortal souls, after all - and sometimes the nature of such souls matters."
Now
As the heroes gear up to leave, the Bound Horror resumes flying around Valaria's head. After awhile, it vanishes, though it is almost certainly still somewhere near...

As the group sets off:
Content that things are in order, Isilme climbs up into the wagon. "You will excuse me if I sleep for a while, I hardly got any last night and am exhausted," she says as she settles in. She sets her pack down and makes a show of preparing a spot to sleep, using it as cover to dig out her scrolls so they'll be accessible. Scrolls of see invis, borrow skill, blink, and non-detection She curls up under the blanket, further obscuring herself from view. "Let me know when she's closing with us," she whispers through the spell.
As the hag begins to close the distance, Isilme begins by casting non-detection under the furs from her scroll, followed by invisibility, then slowly sneaks out of the side of the wagon and moves ahead 60' to continue her casting.
Stealth(invisibility): 1d20 + 12 + 20 ⇒ (20) + 12 + 20 = 52
Once there she quietly completes casting see invisibility from the scroll, allowing her to see the hag, followed by expeditious retreat. When she finishes, she whispers to the group, "Val, give me a good distraction," knowing Val would come up with something suitable to draw the Hag's attention for the final steps of the plan.
When Valaria begins her distraction, Isilme moves up quietly and begins inspecting the Hag closely, looking for the heartstone.
Stealth (invisibility): 1d20 + 12 + 20 ⇒ (12) + 12 + 20 = 44
Perception(Inspired): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
Perception(Inspired): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
When she spots it, she backs up 30' and casts blink from the scroll. "Here we go," she thinks as she feels herself shift into the ethereal plane for the first time. Moving quickly but quietly, she closes the distance with the hag and Valaria, her scroll of borrow skill at the ready.
Stealth(invsibility): 1d20 + 12 + 20 ⇒ (18) + 12 + 20 = 50
Valaria feels a hand on her shoulder as Isilme phases back into reality and utters the words completing the spell. Valaria feels a rush as the magic floods through her mind, bringing forth a torrent of memories, first of all kinds, and then rapidly paring down to memories of theft. The memories, however seem murky and blurred, the only clarity in them the actual specifics of the pilfering itself. All the while she feels a warm presence behind her, as if someone is watching the memories over her shoulder. A sensation of gratitude washes over her as the torrent ends, revealing only a few seconds to have passed.
Not wasting any time, Isilme prepares herself for her next shift, reaching down within herself to her spark, for that little piece that had been touched by her goddess. "I need to borrow some of your luck as well, my lady Starsong," she thinks as she begins to reach out for the heartstone.
Sleight of Hand (Blessing of Desna, borrow skill): 20 + 3 + 4 + 3 = 30
As the surge of divine energy she'd called upon flows through her, time seems to slow for Isilme. She begins to reach for the stone containing portions of her own and Valaria's souls, the brilliant red gem gleaming in the morning light. Just as she is about to grab it, she feels a sudden sense of dread, pulling her hands back and ducking down as the hag swings around unexpectedly, seeming to have sensed something for a moment. As the hag turns back to the distraction, Isilme sees her opening and snatches the gem deftly from the creature, using the knowledge imparted to her by Valaria. Grinning broadly, she swings around behind Val, placing a hand on her shoulder again and preparing for the coming fight.

Assuming we get a surprise round, Isilme plans on casting Mythic Heroism on Val, and starting a Mythic Performance
Hinagiku
Walking back toward Nerosyan, Hinagiku keeps to herself, trying to calm the strange chaotic thoughts that seem to arise from her new mind. As she walks a few paces behind the wagon, the monk concentrates on each of her steps, breathing in and out in rhythm with them.
When she hears Isilme ask for a distraction, she readies herself, continues breathing slowly, and focus her senses on her surroundings.
@Ary: Hinagiku did give a meaningful look to Ary, but she might have misse that!
GM Kiora
Some issues with your plan:
Isilme, nondetection is not on the bard spell list. You must succeed at a DC 25 UMD check to use the scroll.
It is on the ranger spell list but Ary lacks sufficient CL to cast it. Markus could potentially cast it if he has a wordspell of equivalent effect to nondetection on the sorcerer wordspell list (I don't -think- so?)
In addition, invisibility, expeditious retreat, nondetection, and blink all have verbal components.
To provide a verbal component, you must be able to speak in a strong voice. A silence spell or a gag spoils the incantation (and thus the spell).
So the perception DC as is to overhear you would be 0 ( a conversation) with +1 for every 10' between you and the hag. This would be followed by a spellcraft check for the hag to identify if she recognizes the spell.
But if you'd like to create some sort of noisy distraction, someone could roll a bluff check and roleplay something that seems appropriate.
It would go bluff opposed by sense motive, then Isilme would still need to succeed on a stealth check for each verbal component spell.
Remember that the hag is close enough to Valaria that the hag can overhear Valaria speaking into message with a DC 25 perception check - as well as anyone walking with Valaria.
To be clear: Nothing has actually happened yet! (well other than Ehren alerting everyone to where the hag is). Let me know what y'all wanna do.
I also need to know where Valaria and Markus are in relation to the wagon before we begin :p
Isilme
Amend the action to encourage the group to have a loud, boisterous discussion as we travel, that should provide cover to distract from the first two spells being cast. As I return I'll quickly tell Val to step it up (i.e. the distraction), which should give a +5 DC penalty (distracted) to checks for the borrow skill and blink castings) possibly unfavorable (+5) conditions as well.
I'll add an extra five rounds of travel away at -5 penalty to my stealth checks (2x 25' mv, 250') before I cast see invis and expeditious retreat, which adds five rounds to return stealthily (2x 30' mv, 0 penalty). Perception on her part should auto-fail at that point for those two spells (worst-case stealth roll 1(die)+12(bonus)+25(distance)=38, she rolls a 36 on a natural 20).
I'll move my inspired to UMD, 'cause that would've happened first:
Use Magic Device (Inspired): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13
Use Magic Device (Inspired, Gallant Inspiration): 1d20 + 10 + 2d4 ⇒ (11) + 10 + (2, 2) = 25
That means my perception for spotting the heartstone is 12, so I'll use a second round if necessary to spot it, along with a surge.
Perception(surge): 1d20 + 9 + 1d6 ⇒ (11) + 9 + (5) = 25
I'll move 50' away for casting blink, which lowers my stealth check for moving away from her to 45 from 50
Stealth(Blessing of Desna 1MP, Distance): 20 + 12 + 5 = 37
For casting borrow skill
Stealth(Blessing of Desna 1MP): 20 + 12 = 32
I'm assuming we got MP back at some point, if I have less MP than four, then I'll prioritize the theft first (i.e. saving 1mp) perception second, blink third and borrow fourth.
That should cover everything.
GM Kiora
Alright, I wanna see Val's distraction at this point and her bluff roll :3
I also want you to actually roleplay out you walking 250' away to cast. What's your excuse for doing this? Are you gonna announce that you're walking away? Are you gonna try and slip away mid-conversation unnoticed? These are things I care about D:
Isilme
invis/non-detection are happening back at the wagon first under the cover of the furs before she's closed with us, so there's no need for rationale for walking away as she won't see me, hence the stealth check to leave the wagon.
If you need addtional stealth checks for casting the first two spells, let me know.

Val looks back at their new restored friends. "So... I guess we should probably catch you up on what happened while you were... out for the count. We had an interesting time of it. As you can see, we met Aron's lover. He's a pretty nice guy, and he's brave almost to the point of madness. We found him manning a ballista against this giant Abyssal siege machine that was blowing the walls to kingdom come. And we met this great tiefling from Westcrown who gave us a hand. She had some devil bodyguards that saved us once or twice and she did this thing with her tongue..." Val quickly diverges into a very descriptive (and almost entire fictional) tale of her night with Ayavah. Her voice is entirely too loud and a bit bombastic, and she begins making strange hand gestures to provide visual aids.

I want to be next to Ary.
Knowing that the plan has started and that Valaria's trying to distract the hag, Markus joins in Valaria's tale...where he can, at least, attempting to add to her din. "Yes, this... tiefling, Ayavah, she did nothing but hide invisibly while her bodyguards did the work for all of us. Turns out, babau demons are much more difficult to deal with when there's only the two of us."
While Valaria tells her tale of sexual prowess, Markus interrupts every few moments to ask a clarifying questions - "Wait, how fast?" or "She put that where?", asking like a curious 15-year old.

Sosiel and Aron walk hand in hand in front of the group. When Valaria launches into her retelling of her recent sexcapades, Aron bursts into snickers - though Sosiel seems too tense to relax enough to pay attention to the story. He isn't quite the actor that Valaria and Markus are, after all, and he's worried about what's to come...
Meanwhile, Isilme enacts her carefully thought-out plan with grace and care. She's a bit too loud reciting the incantation for invisibility - but it doesn't matter, not with nondetection cloaking her from the hag's sight.
Isilme sees the night hag clear as day before her - she stands next to Valaria, gazing around intently for the invisible stalker in her presence.... but clearly she can't sense the trickster's presence, and the aasimar deftly snatches the heartstone from her neck. She appears before the heroes, a vile, sharp-fanged crone with pitch-black skin and eyes that burn like embers.
"Fools! Who has taken Mesamorga's heartstone?" she cries.
You do get a surprise round, but Isilme spent it stealing the stone. Aron does not participate in the surprise round since he was not filled in on what is going on (he is not in the message spell.

GM Kiora
The revived Captain Bishop directs the ebb and flow of the battlefield, then confronts the hag, dashes the hag's guard aside and hews into her violently. The hag presses her shoulder against Valaria's onslaught, the shock of hitting her abnormally thick flesh ricocheting down her arm. Undaunted, Valaria swings again, the hag seeming to move abnormally slowly thanks to Isilme's magic. True to form, her starknife plunges catastrophically into one of the hag's arms, ripping deeply into her muscle.
Meanwhile, Sosiel invokes Shelyn for sanctuary - creating an intricate golden floral pattern that emanates outwards from his feet.
STR damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6
DEX damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Audit: Technically sheathing a weapon is a move action that provokes AoOs so I'm gonna pretend you didn't do that Val :D...
Book keeping: Ary deals 14 damage to the night hag, leaving her grazed. Ary shares her favored enemy bonus (2 rounds) and uses RALLY! Valaria crits the night hag, dealing 17 damage, 6 STR damage and 2 DEX damage. Sosiel casts sanctuary on himself.
Ehren is up!
Ehren Ferron
1 person marked this as a favorite.
There is an exhilarating rush when Ehren taps into the ley to cast his spell, but the moment he cuts off the connection, he is left feeling winded. Still, he was not going to let a little fatigue get in his way. Drawing his cold iron scimitar, which faintly pulsates in his grasp, the druid starts to work his way around the cart to get a better look at their adversary.
Double move and draw scimitar for now.
Hinagiku
Invigorated by Isilme’s rune and spell, and emboldened by Ary’s call to action, Hinagiku confidently steps forward. Though she does not feel the flow of the world as well as she used to, her new body allows her to carry each movement with more fluidity and ease than ever.
In one swift movement, the monk crouches down using one leg to sweep at the hag’s feet. The shock of the legs meeting resounds throughout Hinagiku’s body. Still, Ary’s words give her the extra will to press on, to no avail.
Still on the ground, one leg in front of the the hags feet, Hinagiku brings her second leg around and hits the back of the the monster’s knees. Yet, she does not fall. Her legs now basically wrapped around the hags lower legs, the kitsune deftly twists her hips to push her enemy on its knees.
