Vivian recognizes these undead creatures as ectoplasmic humans. Due to the ectoplasm that makes up their body, slashing weapons are the most effective mundane way to harm him. Furthermore, their slam attacks can make targets a bit fearful from the slime they leave behind. They also float above the ground and can pass through walls.

Bert climbs down the rope. Climb: 1d20 ⇒ 16

Gamemaster | CC Map | S4 Map

Okay, so the rope is 20 feet. If your movement is 30 ft, a regular quarter move climb action is 7.5 ft. So both Teil, Bert, and anyone else medium sized who wants to climb down will need to make two climb checks for the two move actions it takes to cover the distance (15 feet, drop the last 5 ft with no issues). My apologies for not making that clear, the climb rules don't come into play very often.

Sophie, I just noticed that you have to touch those you want to include in your Hide Undead spell, so if you want to include Vivian, you'll have to drop down first, then cast the spell. The creatures are flat-footed and probably don't have combat reflexes, so you can do that without the need to cast defensively.

hmm. Okay. I can do that. But I assumed I could "hold the charge" like one might for a touch spell. It seems to me that these kinds of spells should allow that. After all, you can't touch more than a couple people simultaneously, so there has to be a gap between some of the people you touch for a spell that targets, say, 5 friendly creatures. Or 10+ creatures, since you can't even be adjacent to that many at once. Dropping like that was a free action, so in game mechanic turns it didn't take any time.

anyway, as you said, it doesn't affect this scenario.

Sophie, I would say out of combat it doesn't matter, you can touch as many people as necessary assuming they allow you to, but in combat you'll have to be adjacent to them. I will look into it in more detail later, although if someone knows if their is a definitive rule on this please let me know.

Also, I'll say that if you make your Acrobatics roll to soften the fall, you can land on your feet.

Sophie drops down from the rope just as others start coming down it. With grace that one might not expect from an older lady, she lands carefully on her feet, makes herself and Vivian invisible to the undead, and draws her weapon.

Teilaenthis manages to climb down the rope and land adjacent to the ectoplasmic foes.

Bert is not so lucky, landing on his back in the water with the wind nearly knocked out of him. Bert takes 1d6 ⇒ 3 falling damage and is prone.

Tara waits up top, not wanting to risk a fall, while Vivian delays to avoid disrupting Sophie's spell.

With all of the available space under the hole now filled, there is nowhere to move down until someone vacates one of the spaces in the rectangle.

We'll give Stefan a chance to post tomorrow before moving forward.

With no space to move to the bottom and no enemy in sight from his position on the ground floor, Dr. Von Herzog waits for a better opportunity to get involved with the combat.

Since Sophie is invisible and Teilaenthis is adjacent to them, the ectoplasmic humans focus their attacks on the tiefling. Fortunately, neither slimy attack hits the Occultist.

Vivian, you were invisible when you attacked, so you get sneak attack damage against the flat-footed foe.

Vivian stabs one of the ectoplasmic humans with her short sword, but the slime surrounding it absorbs most of the damage. Indeed, it probably would not have taken any injury at all if not for the sneak attack.

Sophie discovers a similar problem with her longspear, but her critical blow makes its defense against her weapon moot as the oracle completely destroys her target.

Teilaenthis easily finishes off the remaining ectoplasmic human with his special earthbreaker.

While the others finish the fight, Tara climbs down the rope with no issues.

Stefan, you couldn't see the enemies from your position on the ground floor, so just keep your spell.

Vivian discovered all the information of note about the ectoplasmic humans with her knowledge roll, unless you want to know information like saves or alignment.

Those remaining on the first floor have no issues climbing down the rope now that the undead threat has been dispatched. Taking a place next to Bert with her mace drawn, Tara examines the undead menace. Thus far, the skeletons appear to be like the others that Tara has seen in previous encounters: bludgeoning weapons are most effective against them, they are immune to cold, and have typical undead traits.
