Aloysia Sett |
Aloysia pulls out her grappling hook and rope, finds the best spot she can to hook it on the ledge that isn't in obvious view of the public (if possible), wraps it around her arm a couple times, and begins to descend the wall toward the water.
Climb with rope: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Upon reaching the water, she keeps the end of the rope wrapped around her arm so she has an anchor in case she has trouble swimming and heads toward the pier.
Swim to pier: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (6) + 0 = 6
At the pier she finds a place she can climb up when it looks clear enough of passersby.
Climb the pier: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Then secures the rope to the pier leaving enough slack for the 50 ft rope to sag into the water allowing for a down-climb for everyone else, and an up-climb to get on the pier.
All of this is, of course, pending she didn't just fail any checks!
GM Fez |
I have pictures and things needed to upload to show the full gravitas of the situation at hand, which I can't do from this computer. So in about 4ish hours we'll see the outcomes of these actions. Until then...
Aloysia manages to get down the rope easily and holds on while the current of the river pulls on her. However she does not make headway towards the underpier...
Cecil Rosencrad |
Cecil will consider the situation, putting his mind to work at a way to get there while working with the current. He checks his bag for rope and sighs. "Thought I had bought some." he mutters.
"Maybe we should borrow a raft?" he suggests. "But we need to hurry, my magic armor will not last forever." Yet.
GM Fez |
A dark form comes from the water under the fishery, a large fin breaking the surface as it heads towards Aloysia. An enormous shark briefly breaches before continuing its path towards the elf.
Aloysia: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Jolon: 1d20 ⇒ 18
Gamon: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Shark: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
The shark swims close to Aloysia to take a bite of her.
Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
It narrowly misses as she twists away on the rope.

Jolon, Gamon, and Cecil are 5 feet to the right of Aloysia and 10 feet up.
Gamon Neles |
Gamon swears quietly as he sees the shark, pulling out his bow and sending an arrow into the water about ten yards away from Aloysia or the shark, in an attempt to distract the beast. He asks the others, Do you think if we draw blood it will go into a frenzy after Aloysia?
Not sure if I have to roll attack if i'm intentionally just shooting as far away as I can. If so, here's my roll.
Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Aloysia Sett |
Aloysia tries to get to her original target area and climb up as fast as she can...
Swim: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (4) + 0 = 4
But finds herself too distracted by the shark to accomplish much.
Cecil Rosencrad |
Cecil waits until he can see the shark, chanting and gesturing as he pulls on his arcane reservoir.
spending 2 points, boosting my caster level by 2 and firing toppling magic missile at the shark.
Two bolts of scintillating energy flies from his fingertips with great force.

Gamon's arrow lands in the water a few feet away drawing the sharks attention before Cecil's energy bolts hit it broadside and force it upside down in the water.

Shark (prone?)
Jolon, Aloysia, Gamon, Cecil
Sidenote: I don't know how a shark can be tripped, but I'll make it happen!
Cecil Rosencrad |
I don't know if it could be tripped since it has no relationship with the ground, but hey, I only have that version of magic missile prepared! :P
Jolon Vulture-Heart |
Jolon sheathes his sword and closes his eyes. The wind picks up around the group and Cecil's sharp ears pick up a faint, yet harsh whispering on it as Jolon slowly pulls a javelin from his back.
The haunted curse in action, folks, pulling out that javelin was a standard action.
GM Fez |
Technically, the rules say nothing about a trip target being on the ground, just that some things can't be tripped. Those things typically have a note in their CMD about not being able to be tripped. I can easily imagine the force of the spell causing a swimming creature to lose sense of 'up' and 'down' temporarily causing it to be prone. I don't know, works in my head.
The shark takes time righting itself Provoking an AoO before trying to eat the intruder in its hunting ground once again.
Bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17

The dice Gods are not friendly to us this fight!
Gamon Neles |
Gamon cries softly as he sees the shark attack Aloysia, sending an arrow towards the beast and praying that it doesn't hit his friend.
Attack: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Cecil Rosencrad |
Cecil sees that this is not going well already, and casts another Toppling magic missile at the shark.
Spending 1 more point from my arcane pool. Jeez I hope I don't need them during our boss fight! :P (also I miswrote before, it only takes 1 point to do the CL increase)
1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
This time the missiles seem to have more punch than before.
Benefit: The impact of your force spell is strong enough to knock the target prone. If the target takes damage, fails its saving throw, or is moved by your force spell, make a trip check against the target, using your caster level plus your casting ability score bonus (Wisdom for clerics, Intelligence for wizards, and so on). This does not provoke an attack of opportunity. If the check fails, the target cannot attempt to trip you or the force effect in response.
A toppling spell only affects spells with the force descriptor.
I apparently needed to make a trip roll last time, sorry.
Trip: 1d20 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 3 + 4 = 23
GM Fez |
Jolon's aim is spoiled by Aloysia hanging so close to the shark, but it still lets the beast know that only more pain will be here for it. It begins swimming swiftly upriver to get away from all of the pain.
Combat Over!
Aloysia manages, with some slight hiccups, to swim to the underpier and tie off the rope to one of the sturdier pylons that doesn't shake or sway with the current. Jolon, Cecil, and Gamon soon follow down the rope and over to the underpier.
Aloysia Sett |
Aloysia climbs, or more specifically flops, out of the water onto the underpier breathing heavily and groaning. Her upper arm and shoulder are mangled and bleeding, but she does her best to wrap it up tight with a piece of the wraps she was using to make herself appear like a commoner.
Jolon Vulture-Heart |
Jolon holds her good shoulder firmly.
"Please, hold still. You don't need to bind it like that."
He closes his eyes and begins muttering a Shoanti chant. The unearthly whispers fade into hearing again. When Jolon opens his eyes again, they shine with bluish-white light that spreads through his being and then spreads to Aloysia's wounds.
Jolon casts cure light wounds on Aloysia.
Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Aloysia feels a rush of cold, clean energy zapping through her body towards her injuries, as they began to close, not even scars appearing where the shark savaged her.
Aloysia Sett |
Aloysia shudders quite visibly as the spell fills her body. "Whew that was...different. I don't know that I've ever felt something like that before!"
She slides her sleeve off her shoulder and down her upper arm contorting her neck to take a look at the tissue. "Well would you look at that! You're quite helpful to have around aren't you?!" She replaces the clothing over her shoulder, stands up, and begins ringing out her clothes close to the ground so as to not make a lot of splashing sounds.
Once the group is all safely across she tries to do a rope trick to unhinge the grappling hook from the other side. "I've found in the past that it's never a good idea to go into an 'adventure' without a rope," she says with a small grin.
I'm assuming a Sleight of Hand would be appropriate? Or maybe a Dex check? I'll just roll the d20, and you can tell me if it works or not :)
Sleight of Hand: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21

Aloysia is easily able to get the grappling hook off the underside of the opposite pier.

Gamon Neles |
Gamon tilts his head to the side as he looks at the ship, Is it just me, or is there a door down there? If we decide to visit the ship as well, it may be worthwhile to remember that.
Aloysia Sett |
"Hmm, there is. I wonder if maybe there's a connection to the main building via the ship we can't see. I mean, that ship definitely doesn't look very seaworthy after all."

She deftly picks the lock, and a smug smile spreads across her face as she turns to the group and mouths, "After you"
GM Fez |
Because of the door's size Medium creatures have to spend a move action to get through it unless they succeed at a DC 20 Escape Artist check. Example: From Jolon's current position it'll take 15 feet plus a move action to get through the door (resulting in his standard and moves being used for a round) unless he succeeds at the Escape Artist check. Hope that makes sense.
The air in this large room is chilly and stinks of the river, thanks to a huge opening in the floor that drops away to the river shore three feet below. Several pilings emerge from the waters to support the roof eight feet above the floor, with mossy ropes slung between them. In two places, rusty manacles hang from the ropes over the water. Two five-foot-wide walkways cross the hole to the other side of the chamber, where a collection of old cabinets, lockboxes, and piles of clutter are strewn about. Chipped porcelain plates, a cracked goblet, badly rusted silverware, an old wooden shield with a crossbow bolt embedded in it, the odd dinged helm, and other “treasures” litter the floor of this side of the chamber. Three tables heaped with clutter stand amid this mess. In the southwest corner, a wooden door provides access to a walled-off section.
In the pit below is a large alligator that looks both well-fed and extremely cantankerous. His back turned to you and locking a door to a small side room is none other than Gaedren Lamm. He is a jaundiced and bent corpse of a man, his eyes yellowed and skin speckled from age. His left leg has a pronounced limp as he shuffles about. On his rare trips outside, he also wears a tattered wide-brimmed sun hat to protect his bald head from sunburn.
He hasn't noticed you or the door being unlocked. What will you do before I roll initiative?
Cecil Rosencrad |
Oh, if Cecil sees Gaedren, he will immediately try to kill the man. I think a toppling spell might be just enough to push him into the alligator tank...
Jolon Vulture-Heart |
Seeing Gaedren for the first time causes Jolon to glare angrily, baring his teeth and making his orcish parentage clear to all. This was the man who killed his mother. Honor demanded he look him in the eye. He marches into the fishery.
"GAEDREN LAMM!" he bellows.

"And you! You knifed one of my best shiver pushers! But wait, I hear you work for gold, shiv this freak and join me. The pay'll be more than fair."

Jolon Vulture-Heart |
Jolon snorts and smiles.
"You're going to call a man who towers over you a "runt," old man? I did not come alone, Gaedren. You've escaped judgment for your crimes for years, but you cannot escape Pharasma's final judgment, and those who you've wronged are going to send you to it!"
He closes his eyes and a wind riffles through the room. Flickering blue lights flit around him, and one zings over to Gamon and he feels a cold, clean energy zap through him. He feels a vague, energetic hum in his limbs with each beat of his heart.
Jolon uses life link on Gamon.
Then he opens his eyes and lifts his klar above his head.
"For Zellara!"
GM Fez |
As Gamon steps into the room Gaedren chortles a bit to himself. "The lackey for the apothecary?! Let me tell you how appreciative I am of your services. Because of you my best customers kept coming to me for years! Hah ha ha!"
The old man still seems a little off kilter when he catches Zellara's name and he starts howling with laughter. "Yes, I remember her. Such beautiful eyes and silky hair! I couldn’t bear to feed them to my pet—she’s in the next room if you’d like to speak to her."
