"Good deal," Florence smiles, though she can't help but notice that Ben releases the handshake a little abruptly. For the first time, it occurs to her that maybe he isn't especially used to or comfortable with physical contact. Although she wasn't the type to hug complete strangers, she'd grown up in a family where affection was shared verbally as well as physically and so she sometimes forgot that not everyone felt the same.

Darn, he's probably not used to that sort of thing. At least he was nice enough to humor me.

"Okay Ben, sleep well. It was good to talk with you, too."
______

"Um...it wasn't anything big," Florence responds shyly the next morning as Nidhi offers up praise for her as well as Bynx. "Most children like fluffy critters, don't they? I'm just glad we were able to take her mind off of things for a little bit. But thank you - and Bynx says thanks too!" She gives the feline an affectionate pat on the head. "Keep it up with this 'best cat in all of Wati' talk and he'll get a swelled head - won't you?"

As the party makes ready to depart, Florence stops to consider Cahal's question. She actually had a point; there were surely still people trapped in their homes or needing healing after the night the city had had. "Because Qasin asked us to?" It wasn't the best reason but it was the only one she could come up with.

Cahal ud'Din wrote:
"Can someone explain to me again why we're not fighting the undead in the city and instead rescuing some fat Pharasmin who chewed more than he can handle?!"

Zilchus doesn't interrupt the banter from Nidhi, Ben, & Florence. Good stuff, Peeps.

"That's a good question, Cahal. We'll see what it's like out there when we head out. I'm obviously interested in making sure the city is safe. Let's go check."

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

Not exactly sure what the party is doing other than standing around in front of the shop listening. So what’s the plan?

Hesitatingly, the party heads back out into the streets. The city is quite strange this morning. The usual hustle and bustle and other city noises are absent. It is quiet, tomb-like, as everyone is still hunkered down, avoiding the dead still presumably wandering the town.

Zilchus Lyghtlode wrote:

When others are ready... Zilchus will re-armor himself and attach his weapon cord for the walk to the Brickworks.

"I think we can go straight there unless we want to visit Abdur for any last minute preparations? Do you think we want to find that bird thing?" Zilchus asks, ready to go surveil the location.

Zilchus intends to scope the location from a distance first, and get closer if there is normal foot traffic around the location.

We need some back up/pushing in order to advance peeps. He's what Zilchus proposed. And we can definitely keep an eye out for undead on the way.

Nidhi laughs at Florence's statement, her laughter is musical once more signalling that her throat has healed from vomiting the previous night.

Nidhi listens to everyone's suggestions as to what their next more should be. Cahal takes her usual skeptical stance, while Zilchus helps mediate the conversation. Ben is cheerful - perhaps more than usual - and Florence seems to be her usual self.

Florence Corvina wrote:
"Because Qasin asked us to?" It wasn't the best reason but it was the only one she could come up with.

I'd rather be cleaning the streets of Wati of the undead. Grandma is losing money everyday that her shop is closed. Nidhi tilts her head and places a hand on her hip. "I think we should take the bird with us. We could run into something... unexpected." Nidhi is secretly excited about that possibility.

"If Petemnib is wealthy, maybe he'll reward up for saving him." Nidhi's eyes brighten, "Oh! Guys! The church! We'll gain some rep with them too if it turns out the Silver Chain is behind the kidnapping!" That's double the reward!

Nidhi imagines a parade through Wati in the party's honor. Nidhi and her companions stand on a float, waving to the citizens. ”Oh please, it was nothing,” Nidhi assures the crowd. Two muscular women with large scimitars approach Nidhi to kiss her on either side of her face.

Nidhi surfaces from her fantasy and sees her companions starting to move in the direction of their destination. Nidhi hurries to catch up.

Cahal shrugs off the reasons offered. She wasn't really asking.

She follows to the lair of the Silver Chains: "Oh, and another thing: what kind of gang calls itself the Silver Chains and wears golden masks? If I were the boss, I would call the gang, well, I don'T know, maybe the Golden Masks?! Anyways, now that we're here, let's do as Zilchus suggest. One, we check to see if there are people in the street. If so, then we can approach separately and gang up at the door or something. Otherwise, we need someone to scout ahead. Perhaps we could have Zilchus look like a zombie looking for lunch?"

She smiles at the idea.

The streets of Wati are virtually abandoned and the whole trip down to the waterfront is eerily quiet. You don’t see any undead this morning on your route, but you feel their presence as even the birds and animals are silent and cower in fear.

As you pass near the Sunburst Market, you see a cart lying on its side in the road ahead, though most of its load appears to be firmly in place. A body lies beside it, covered in blood and twisted in death.

About a half dozen zombies remain here, snacking on the driver’s corpse and milling about aimlessly. You have surprise as you round a corner and walk up to this grisly scene.

The wagon’s driver died with a heavy pouch of gold - 50 gp. Unusually high for a cart driver. In addition, he wears a crude silver chain worth 50 gp wrapped around his left wrist

You also find, in the wagon, a secret compartment holding a magical hand with a leather strap to hand around ones neck as well as jewelry taken from the corpses worth 850 gp.

Spellcraft DC 20:
This mummified human hand comes from an honest man punished for a crime he didn’t commit, and is dried and hung from a simple twine thong around the neck. The hand’s scapegoat origins offer some protection to its wearer.

When the wearer of a hand of the honest man is targeted by a curse or a misfortune effect such as a witch’s misfortune or evil eye hex, the curse is instead transferred to the hand with no ill effects to the wearer. The hand retains the curse (even if it normally expires after a set duration) until the effect is removed with a remove curse spell or similar effect.

A spellcaster receives a +2 bonus on her caster level check to remove a curse stored in a hand of the honest man. Removing a hand of the honest man while it holds a curse instantly transfers the curse to its wearer. A hand of the honest man can hold only one curse or effect at a time. If the wearer is targeted by another curse while the hand is currently storing a curse, the new curse takes effect normally. A hand of the honest man has no effect on curses already affecting a creature.

The wearer of a hand of the honest man is riddled with guilt over any untruths she utters, and takes a –2 penalty on all Bluff checks while wearing the hand.

It's worth 3,000gp

"A silver chain?" Florence says, raising an eyebrow. "Their handiwork here, I wonder? Or maybe one of them just wound up having a really bad day."

When the strange-looking mummified hand is discovered, she wrinkles her nose with distaste as she tries to discern what properties it has.

Spellcraft: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30

"Oh...okay, wow. Listen to this - as best as I can tell, this hand belonged to someone that was punished for a crime they didn't commit. If you uh, wear it, it'll absorb a curse that's directed at you, but only one." She frowns as she continues to ponder the macabre item. "If there's a curse stored in it, a priest can still remove it like they could from a living person. But if you take the hand off while it's holding a curse then it'll jump from the hand to the wearer. So...I guess it could be handy to have but you'd want to be really careful about wearing it and removing it and everything."

With a grimace, she wipes her hands against her pants. "But it's a mummified hand. Why would you want it around your neck? Ugh! And anyway, we'd better get moving again towards the Brickworks before something else happens."

Zilchus helps quickly stow the loot, wondering about the connection between the silver chain and the undead.

"Hey, Ben? Ben!?" Zilchus calls out to Professor Ben. "Say Ben, does this make sense to you? Why was this driver bringing in all these bodies? And does it seem weird to you that the silver chain and the undead are connected? Could they be connected? I mean, it might not be nothing more than a coincidence, right? But maybe...maybe they are doing something *really* weird."

While he stands up from the crouched position he has taken in order to examine the man's wrist, Benedictus pays close attention to Florence's detailed explanation of the magical properties of an item worn by the driver that had made an impression on him as well. He's about to add something, perhaps his congratulations for Florence's impeccable explanation, when Zilchus addresses to him.

"I agree with you," says Ben with a somber expression. It's nice to talk to him again, as though nothing happened. "There are several ways in which a criminal organization such as the Silver Chain could exploit dead bodies." Ben makes a displeased expression, clearly disdainful at the idea of what he's about to say. "The most obvious one consists in using the corpses as materials for necromantic spells or rituals. Perhaps this driver was a lower member of the organization, and his task was to bring the bodies to his group, so that they can use them." Ben scratches his chin, thoughtfully, for a few moments, then shrugs. "But I guess we will have to find it out personally...Let's get moving. And keep your eyes open, everyone.
We might have more troubles along the way

Knowledge local or history DC 15:
Not long ago, the Bright River Brickworks produced a steady supply of mud bricks for Wati’s less glorious homes and businesses, but one setback after another eventually led to a cracked kiln and a fire that raged through the building and the surrounding shanties in the Veins. In the 2 years since, the hovels have quickly grown back, but the brickworks remains uncannily silent and empty for a structure in Wati’s crowded harbor district.
- - -

The party makes it the rest of the way without further incident. You leave the Midwife district and head into The Veins.

Nestled between Midwife and the rickety Bargetown slum, Wati’s harbor district stacks block upon block with woodcarvers, tar kilns, warehouses, and whatever shanties can be crammed between them. Its myriad shallow canals breed un-abating clouds of insects, the bites of which spot the bodies of the locals, who stain their hands and cheeks with pitch to repel the pests.

Eventually you come to two fire-scarred mud-brick walls and a half-dozen crumbling clay kilns which are all that remains of the building that once stood in this weed-choked lot. A boarded up, scorched door stands in the southeast corner where the walls join. It seems, on first glance, to be quite abandoned.

Nidhi's appearance appears to change. Nidhi long hair becomes more lustrously shiny, tumbling down, loose and free. Her traveling cloak resembles more of a cape that just covers the shape of her torso. Thanks to a fashionable top that appears significantly lower, the part of her torso that is visible looks very generous. Her bow, which she takes back out, looks like a long baguette. Nidhi clears her throat, "Ahem," and raises her voice up a few octaves: "Mittens? Oh, Mittens! Where are you, my naughty kitty?"

"You know... I think we all could have a lot of fun together." Nidhi pushes her illusion cleavage up as if making an explicit suggestion. "For just a silver, my friends and I would love to spend some time with you," Nidhi gestures to where she just came from and hopes her companions are preparing some heavy, blunt objects. Nidhi forces a high-pitched giggle and bats her eyelashes again.

Hopefully the people around the corner aren't children.

”This here is private property, and you’re trespassing.” says the heavier of the two. The smaller man looks more interested in what Nidhi is offering, but he says nothing for now, though the longing in his eyes is clear enough.

”Shove off.” he adds, in case he wasn’t clear. They are both casually holding punching daggers.

Zilchus waits to see what happens.

Nidhi acts surprised. ”Don’t tell me you already have a lady waiting at home.” Nidhi winks again, ”I won’t tell if you won’t!”

Nidhi moves to be within 35 feet (for spell) of the larger man and curls a ‘come hither’ finger towards the heavier of the two. ”Tell me, is it bigger than that dagger?” Nidhi casts Charm Person.

Charisma Check (Charm Person): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19

"I'll tell you what. I'll knock a few copper off the price and we can enjoy ourselves right here behind the building." Nidhi gestures to where she came from. "It'll be quick and nobody has to find out." Nidhi smiles again, trying to look flirtatious: "And if you're really lucky, maybe I'll share this with you afterwards." Nidhi waves her weapon which is glamoured to look like bread. "Yeah, I'll share an arrow to two with you. Maybe in your kneecaps.

No need to make a charisma check, it's just a save for me. Nicely played by the way, I thought you had me!

"Hey, she's casting spells at us! Get her!" he shouts as he resists your womanly guiles. Both men prepare to advance and take their boredom and irritation out on the 'helpless' charmer and her cat...

Just before things get ugly...

Florence's jaw drops as she listens to Nidhi's ruse. Not only was it a nice bit of spellery, but also a good bit of quick thinking as well! She knew that if she'd tried something like that, she'd have probably ruined it with an epic faceplant or something.

Guess I know who to take lessons from if I want to impress someo-oh crap, they're on to us!
______

Round 1, Initiative 11

"Were you all going to hurt my friend's cat? I LIKE THAT CAT!" Zilchus is enraged as he likes Bynx. It's a good cat. "You threaten my cat, you threaten me!"

"We have to take them out quick!" reminds Cahal as she rushes forth to support Nidhi.

Benedictus moves into position and draws a wand. Florence casts Bless, improving the party in battle. Cahal rushes forward and stabs blue (though I think you may have gone through a closed door, I’m letting it slide for now). Zilchus rounds the corner to defend ‘his’ cat. Nidhi plugs the larger man in the chest with her loaf of bread, causing substantive hemorrhaging.

The big man, with a substantive arrow hanging from his bleeding form, decides to live to fight another day and hauls his carcass out of the building on the far side. The smaller man quickly plays follow the leader as he too scarpers off. Clearly two men with strong loyalties.

The party can chase them down, or let them run off…

Florence - 11
Cahal - 9
Zilchus - 8+
Nidhi - 8-
Good Folks - 3

Blue - 3 (-14hp)

Next up everyone if the hunt is on. We’re out of initiative if you let them flee.

Zilchus moves up to chase off the cat-haters, but does not overtly chase them. He stops short and readies his blade.

"Yeah, you better run! You don't talk to my friend's cat that way!" Zilchus chides as they run away. He waits to make sure that they are really leaving and looks around while he does.

"Wha?! Capture one!" As the larger man turns to flee (Red), Nidhi fires another arrow at his fleeing back.

To hit: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19 17/20 Cold Iron Remaining

Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Roll20 Map - Treasure Sheet

The big man stumbles at the arrow in his back to match the one in his belly, but he keeps pulling away as fast as he can, though slower now even as the lighter man tries to help him.

Zilchus can see that the other standing door (aside from the pair Cahal burst through), though it seems heavily boarded up, is in fact merely locked and looks easy enough to open when the group is ready.

Inactive; Campaign Concluded

Florence comes racing around the corner just in time to see the two men fleeing, a couple of Nidhi's arrows sticking out of the larger one. "If we capture one then we'll be responsible for him," she responds, thinking back to the man they'd captured after the ambush attempt in the Necropolis. "Just let them go, they're harmless or cowards or both. Besides, the longer we take up here the more likely it is for someone to come looking for them or for there to be a shift change for their watch."

She kneels down and gives Bynx plenty of head rubs for his trouble. "Are you okay Bynx? These Silver Chain people must be pretty poor thieves and tomb robbers if they're hungry enough to think about eating a cat!"

After making sure that Bynx and the rest are okay, Florence hefts her weapon and nods at the others. "I'm ready to keep moving."
