Voren wrote:"Forces of the Abyss! Weaken thy foe! Bring woe into its short existence!"Sooooo... I don't like to order you around how you play your character, but I'll just throw this out there. Are you actually meaning to invoke demonic forces to curse your enemy here?
Because I promise you that this will not go down well with basically anyone who knows Abyssal (a common language to know around these parts, for obvious reasons). I mean, feel free to do so, just want to make it clear that there will almost certainly be IC consequences for invoking demonic powers in the demon tongue...
I was trying to bring a sort of duality to Voren. Despite being a total softie, there is that underlying basic demonic instinct. A darker side that emerges every once in a while or under duress. It would be for RP flavor and after it occurs, Voren won't remember what happened. But, since I'm playing a good tiefling, let me alter that. I'm sure I can get the same message across without the demonic speak.
Aurica Firehand
Yeah, and in a game that wasn't WotR, I'd say the idea of the 'hey maybe there's some real demonic power that Voren doesn't understand at work here' could be really appealing, etc.
But... problematically, this IS Wrath of the Righteous. At this point in time, Aurica doesn't understand Abyssal, but she's probably going to pick it up down the line because why wouldn't you learn the language of your favored enemy. And if Voren, down the line, verbally invokes demonic forces to cast any sort of spell, in the language of demons-- and doesn't remember it afterwards? Then I would have a hard time trying to justify how Aurica wouldn't literally just try to kill him at that point.
That's not a matter of "bickering IC", it's a matter of 'she would believe he literally gets possessed by demonic forces', and she would feel the ethical, and merciful, choice, would be to try and kill him before the demons were able to use him to do something more powerful.
Please note I'm in no way advocating PVP. I do not WANT PVP. I am saying that pursuing that cool 'duality'/demonic powers idea will result in me being in a very hard position as a player, as I would have to basically have Aurica fail to react to the fact that Voren is, as near as she can tell, either using, or being used BY, the literal forces of the Abyss. Either would be terrifying to her, and would completely undo any progress they have made towards her regarding him as an ally.
To echo Alice, I'm not trying to tell you how to play your character at all! I'm just a firm believer of the idea that 'in character actions lead to in character consequences' -- and invoking demonic forces is an in character action that is going to have some SERIOUS consequences as regards my character. Obviously I can't speak for the NPCs or the other PCs.
Sorry if it seems like we're dogpiling here-- I recognize you already retconned the particular bit here, so it's a bit of a dead horse right now. I'm just saying, these are some things to consider as you think about how you want Voren to develop down the line.
Voren the Outsider
Okay. Thank you, Alice and Aurica. For the future, I'll take the duality of the fey into account. It just slipped my mind, I suppose, with the more obvious connection with demons. I suppose the red-eyes and proper speech could be related to the fey in a way. You're not dogpiling on me. I know that you're just making sure I'm not doing something I would later regret IC and I thank you both for that. I wonder, though, if there's a way to balance the demonic aspect and the fey aspect into an interesting blend. For Voren to deal with these two outside forces, while trying to grasp on his "humanity" and figure out what and who he is, who his mysterious witch patron is, who is parents were, and why he's been marked by fey.
Again, you have my thanks.
Aurica Firehand
No worries, bro! And thanks for being so cool about it, I know sometimes it can be rough to get a sense of where you're going with the character. I personally think the idea of him being influenced by both his demonic blood, and the fey influence, and trying to figure out who HE is in the middle of all that, is really neat. :)

As a heads-up, I'm going to be at Kubla Con from the 23rd through the 26th, and I doubt I'll have much time to tag while there. I'll try and catch up on the boards each night and make sure I'm not missing anything super important, but please feel free to GMPC Aurica if you're waiting on me.

Ack, web! Boo! Hiss! The bane of clumsy meat shields everywhere!
As an aside, why did nobody tell me braces hurt this damn much? I had mine put on today, and dear god, I could really use a hot chocolate liberally laced with Bailey's right now...
Have fun at the con, Aurica! :D
Jens Varmodsson
I could use some booze now. Captain Morgan spiced rum, Bailey's Irish Cream, a Black Russian, Jack Daniel's, cherry brandy, blue curacao... anything to take my mind off the pains. =[
As an aside, I got sick of trawling through the gameplay thread looking for the information on Terendelev's Scales, so I have a link in my profile now, under Jens' gear. Should make things easier. Maybe I'll even use it at some point - perhaps when we're surrounded by enemies and Jens decides to make a crazy charge...
How's your study going, Alice?
Jens Varmodsson
... Well, I failed my Perception check. *facepalm*
Oh god exams. Exams are awful. Fun fact: I had a depressive breakdown in year 12 and had to be exempted from exams. Then I ended up doing my BVA through TAFE, so no exams there. I'd probably die if I had to do one now. >.> Though, I did have to do massive journals for my degree. And art is probably the hardest subject to write about...

So, should we change tactics and just let him go?
dien RPG Superstar 2015 Top 16
ICly, I can't weigh in, I'm unconscious. ;)
But seriously, we just lost two party members to unconsciousness and if Jens attacks he's going to drop, too. It's up to the conscious people to think if they even can take him.
He wants to flee, I'd let him. Aside from hitting Jens, he's done no lethal damage to us and doesn't really seem to WANT to fight us.
Jens Varmodsson
Wait... where does it say that if I attack, I'll go down?
A staggered creature may take a single move action or standard action each round (but not both, nor can he take full-round actions). A staggered creature can still take free, swift, and immediate actions. A creature with nonlethal damage exactly equal to its current hit points gains the staggered condition.
I mean, I'm most likely going to just let him go, but... I want to know where you're getting that from, because this is likely to come up again.
Flynn Palomere
If your at exactly 0, with no nonlethal you are actually Disabled, which is what it is listed under in the combat section. Disabled gives you the staggered condition plus the fact that if you take any strenuous (standard) action except healing you lose a hit point and start dying.
Voren the Outsider
So, for all of us that are conscious and well, I say we come up with a plan about what to do before we post.
dien RPG Superstar 2015 Top 16
Well, as I said, I'm unconscious. IC-ly I can't contribute.
But agreeing on a plan OOCly, like you're suggesting we do, is already a certain level of OOC, because, in character, nobody has the chance to actually convene for that plan in the middle of a combat.
I will point out that the odds are effectively like... 3-to-1 now, though, when you consider everyone who's either webbed, color sprayed, disabled, etc. Half the party has been effectively incapacitated by one dude.
The dwarf is trying to get away. My fear is that if you force him to stand and fight, he will do so... and kill us all.
Voren the Outsider
All right. Given everything that's happened, I think we should let him go. I'll suggest that in my IC post.
Voren the Outsider
It's okay, Alice. Perfectly understandable.
Jens Varmodsson
So the GM's busy with study and now the meat shield has the flu. This is a sucky development. >.> Not trying to whine, just letting you all know that if this gets moving again and I'm quiet, it's because I'm coughing up a lung.
GM Alice
*hug* Hope you feel better Jens!
Okay everyone, final week of class is over. I'd hoped to have gotten to this game tonight (or, actually, a couple of nights ago!), but I just didn't have a chance. Tomorrow when I get up I'll post and I will endeavour to get us going back at a steady clop from now on. My apologies again!
Jens Varmodsson
My mother force-fed me chicken noodle soup. It seems to be helping; I feel better now than I did 24 hours ago. Still not 100%, but on the way.
Hope it all went smoothly for you, Alice. I look forward to this game progressing! =)
Reknar
Apologies for the absence people - my youngest got sick so it has been a runaround weekend thus far... Catching up on my games as I can.
Jens Varmodsson
So, a question that just popped into my head... What mythic paths is everyone thinking of? (Yes, I know it's a while away; I just like looking forward to things.) I basically made Jens to be a Guardian - so many of the path abilities are basically about "nope"-ing attacks on allies, which is where the focus will be.
What's everyone else thinking? I'm guessing Archmage for Voren, but nothing really jumps out at me for anyone else. No stealing my schtick, guys! :P
Jens Varmodsson
Go full Marshal. Yes, it's TOTALLY because I think it's best for your character, and NOT AT ALL because I fear being overlapped... :p
Voren the Outsider
Dual pathing Heirophant/Archmage. There are some abilities from both paths that can benefit Voren.
Voren the Outsider
Just to let you guys know, I'll be working for a good chunk of the day. Should be back early in the evening.
Voren the Outsider
Hey, guys. Just to let you know, posting from me may be sporadic tomorrow. I have some family business to attend to.
