When I heard whipping boy I assumed it was...Well of Darkness? First part of a trilogy? Damn, I can't remember for the life of me now.

OK, having considered things for a little bit...

I will allow the 3.5 Flaws system, but only for a single drawback. Obviously this won't be combined with the Drawbacks system.

I am not allowing unusually powerful races. Between third party and gestalt, there's a lot of interaction going on, and I don't feel comfortable throwing in yet more complications. I also won't be allowing custom races this time, for much the same reason.

I will not be allowing Templates, as a rule. I've offered one to a character instead of Gestalt, and I will allow others to do so too.

I will allow the 3.5 Warlock, although I'd like to see a Pathfinderised version of the class first.

~~~
Thus judges Jon. Am I missing any? If so, I'm sorry. Please feel free to point them out to me and I'll get right on it.
I've settled on a warlord/bard who is a washed up sport fighter kept around as an impressive display to easily amused nobles wistful for younger more glorious days whilst serving as a surrogate father figure for a daughter not his own.
EDIT: Actually forget the bard. Ima hedgewitch(charlatan) instead. Seems a little less headache than treating with both spells and maneuvers on what is essentially a simple character.
What about the factotum. It was created by the guys at paizo before they made pf.
Hmm, considering class combinations for a young nobleman from a House known for magical talent trained by a man who was a bodyguard and may have been a spy...
Single classes that seem like good fits: Sorcerer, Bloodrager, Eldritch Scion Magus, Bard, Fighter, Cavalier, Ranger, Slayer, maybe Gunslinger.
I'd appreciate a link (the D&D tools site seems to be broken) but from what I remember it was a solid class. Go for it.
Feel free to PM me if you find my submission is missing anything.
Ty.
Got my sheet pretty much done, I'll sort out skills if accepted.
Factotum Class
Do you permit feats too?
If Factotum does not tickle your fancy I was thinking Unchained Monk (With Kung Fu Genius)//Magus (Kensai) think Ser Barriston Selmy if he could hit you with Shocking Grasp.
Depends on the feat. Some of the 3.5 feats were silly. Link me up and I'll judge them.
Font of Inspiration
Kung Fu Genius
Font of Inspiration, sure. Kung Fu Genius no. That's a class changing feat and just a little scary in a Gestalt build.
Thanks, yeah it can be. It works to make a Monk gestalt better with other classes.
Would you be willing to allow Iaijutsu Focus?
If not its cool.
This feat? It seems reasonable enough, so long as you can get someone flatfooted and hit them when you draw a weapon.
Its actually a skill not a feat but yes that one.
Just for the poops and chuckles of it. Would you permit the Erudite? or the STP Erudite?
I just got an idea for this. A Bard//Warlord with the Bannerman archtype. Due to the wording of Diplomat's Presence I feel that it would stack with Versatile Performance. It would be nice to know if you felt differently though, then I'll probably just skip that presence. What about general boosts to diplomacy together with versatile performance? For example silver tongue from human. Would that stack with versatile performance?
Master Performer and Grand Master Performer normally require a faction, but would you allow them anyway? I don't think they are overpowering, though you might disagree, it'll benefit everyone :). I'm thinking to go with the dervish dance feat, but worship Shelyn, would that be ok? Too bad I can't carry a banner and a glaive, that would be kinda fitting for a worshipper of shelyn. Edit: Or would you allow me to mount a banner on the glaive? That sounds really cool actually. Bah, that makes me want to go with Spear Dancing Style and Spear Dancing Spiral. That'll sadly eat up all my feats though(I need two weapon fighting + weapon focus + weapon finesse + spear dancing style + spear dancing spiral + deadly agility in order to avoid switching between str and dex halfway through the career of the character). If you allow a banner on a glaive, would you also allow me to skip the weapon focus requirement for those feats? If not I guess I can delay Deadly Agility for one level... Would sadly have to delay master performer though.
Did you ever get an explanation of path of war? Mechanically they work very much like spells for martial characters, but instead of uses per day they have uses per encounter. They do martial stuff, usually attacks with weapons, combat maneuvers or replicate feats that can be used by martial characters. They are divided into boosts, counters, strikes and stances. Boosts are usually swift action which benefits you or allies, for example bonuses to damage, hit or movement. Strikes are standard or full round action attacks, usually with extra damage or a tacked on effect (for example one of the effects from dirty trick). Counters are immediate actions used to stop the enemy, often skill checks opposed vs attack rolls to stop a single attack, though it can also be other things. Stances are kinda like styles, but they can be entered outside of combat.
If you've played with the 3.5 Tome of Battle, Path of War is pretty similar, if I remember correctly.
Shadow Lodge
Hey is this still open?
Do you have a divine caster?
As far as I know it is still open.
My character is going to be a Unchained Monk//Reincarnated Druid.
The concept is this very old character who has been reincarnating for a long time, perhaps explaining why some houses have many different races involved in them. This event is somewhat special for her as this is one of her direct grandchildren? So she could be the grandmother of the princess, but reincarnated into a new form. She has spent many years studying and learning and being a guiding hand for the kingdom and this is her first time adventuring in quite some time. It will hopefully inspire the spark of the old her who used to be quite the adventurer.
If you are ok with this, how many lifetimes should she have been around on the island for?
Shadow Lodge
Very interesting.
I'm in another aristocratic game where I have a kitsune bard bartender (the kitsune part is secret because of racism and the fact that the DC to tell I'm not human is 42)
I was thinking of something involving investigator and maybe archivist from 3.5, but there are a lot of options for the second class.
OOH
Crazy idea, probably not going to be allowed but would you allow me to play as an earthbender?
Okay, I've finally had a chance to look through spheres of power and I'm changing which classes I'm using to make my concept. I'm going eliciter (hypnotist)/elementalist.
How long do we have to make characters?
How do we do HP? Avg? Max? Roll?
Will you allow these two racial traits for Kitsune:
Alright, working on completing Matt here. Just one big question before I start spending his gold and the like: Do we have to use Spheres for Alchemy? I ask only because of the Investigator side of things for Matt here uses it, and I sadly couldn't trade it off thanks to the fact that Empiricist doesn't stack with the Sleuth Archetype. And while it might make me a dirty rotten munchkin, I'd rather keep Empiricist.
This set up is positively delightful.
Background:
Lady Julienne Hazier of House Garesh, residing on the island of (insert small island owened by Garesh), prefers her noble title. But if you insist on calling her according to her profession, she prefers the term "privateer", and she is certainly sanctioned in her efforts.
Julienne was born to the Hazier family, a family in the clan of House Garesh more know for keeping up airs of high nobility despite relatively meager holdings. This lack of focus on practicality was both boon and bane to the Haziers, when a pirate vessel overtook them. On the one hand, their large pretty ship was ill-suited for combat. On the other hand Julienne was classically trained in the sword, and managed to make herself valuable enough to be "pressed" into service. Less savory rumors put her anywhere from having joined willingly to the one who sold out her family to inherit their wealth. "Julie Dei Vult" took to the sea like one blessed by Besmara herself, quickly becoming the captain of the vessel through steel and spell, her classical training quickly adapting to a more devious fighting style.
Julie still had tastes for the high court, however, and sought to parlance her blood and fleet into a higher position in House Garesh. With Garesh' lack of wood for shipbuilding, a steady supply of captured vessels was quite enough to get the pragmatic sailors to turn a blind eye to her piracy, issuing her retroactive legitimacy and awarding her her family estates once more. The sum of money being awarded for the return of Amberlae would set those estates aright, and just as "Julie Dei Vult" did not wish a life only as a pirate captain, Julienne could not stand to only stand around in her isolated manor. A daring adventure possibly followed by invitation to the royal court? Impossible to ignore.
Personality:
Julienne is not as demonic as her detractors who have had interests abroad sabotaged by her piracy would claim. But nor is she as innocent as she would portray herself in court. Julienne adapted to survive, the trauma of her parents murder, forming a second personality almost, Julie Dei Vult, the renegade pirate queen, merciless and cruel. While not so advanced as schizophrenia, Julienne finds herself both uncomfortable staying as a noble or a pirate for too long. However, rest easy, her taste for overly flashy style and melodrama remains intact regardless of personality.
Crunch Outline:
I know I want to be a Fighter/Something, to try out the stamina/weapon master's handbook stuff. The other something will need to provide out of combat abilities.
A dozen or so at least, I'd think. Interesting concept.
Path of War Warlord, right? Well, I'll need to double check stuff, but so long as you're granting Morale bonuses to different things it should work. Otherwise, Morale Bonuses won't stack.
You can take the Master Perfomer feats.
I'll allow Dervish Dance for non-Sarenrae folks.
As I understand Banners they need to be carried on a mount or by hand, so no to on a weapon. Which sucks, because I always wanted to a Samurai-style flag on a Paladin...
Deadly Agility is Dex to Damage, right? Yeah, that can be used.
And I have a very loose understanding of Path of War, but I haven't read the specific stuff for all all the abilities work and combine, so...
It's a preference, as it's awesome, but I'll be honest in that I'm not sure how it works with Alchemists. So you can keep the usual stuff and not be considered a horrible cheese-eating munchkin.
Nice. Need to roll through which races she would have been to figure out her average life span.
But... B-but... I'M not a cheese eating munchkin... I just don't have the time necessary to learn a whole new system, it's why im applying to a PBP.
Oh spheres of power... Guess I have to learn that :/. How does it work for a bard?
I was hoping for a "rule of cool" ruling for the banner-dancing, but it's probably way too feat intensive to be good anyway. The working on this suggests that it is possible to mount banners on a weapon, but I'll just drop it. I'll go with banner + buckler in on hand and a melee weapon in the other, probably with deadly agility instead.
The stacking question wasn't about morale bonuses, but about Versatile Performance. If I take Versatile Performance (Sing) along with Skill Focus Perform (do I have to chose sing, or can it apply to all perform skills btw?) and also have silver tongue from human, do I get +3(skill focus), +2(silver tongue) or +5(both) to diplomacy?
Pretty much the same way it works for everyone else. XD When you first get casting as a class feature, you replace it with whatever number of magic talents is appropriate for your class, and you can pick stuff like how you cast (normal Spheres has no required components or anything, but you can add them for bonuses and flavor) and which powers you know.
Philo Pharynx wrote:
Forgot to answer this - Full first level, average +1 or roll for the brace after.
You don't have to, I just prefer it. But the link should explain it.
Yes, you have to choose a specific perform. And doesn't sing do Bluff and Sense Motive? But honestly, I'll have to look into that one.
This is super cool. It is possible that if we both get chosen that we would have a history as my character would have been a ward of the throne when you were a child, and an advisor to house Archaos while you were on the throne.
Sing is bluff yes, but the example still works since silver tongue also applies to bluff. Change it to oratory then.
Do masterpieces work with Spheres of Power? I'm thinking to take several of them. I guess it would make my character less likely to be chosen if I went with traditional casting + masterpieces instead of sphere-casting... I'm kinda sad now, masterpieces is some part of the reason why I wanted to play this character, but I guess they'll work against me.
Dotting for interest. I think I'll put together an elan aegis/egoist. He's a personal bodyguard of the head of one of the minor noble Houses. I'm thinking that he's a member of a Varangian Guard type of organization, which I think some of these people would have due to the proclivity for, shall we say, underhanded diplomacy. He has been tasked with helping find the princess to bring prestige to the House.
Honestly, I doubt it'll matter. Given the number of folks who are going Vancian anyway. If it's down to two characters I like equally, it'll be one of the factors I weigh, but only one of them.
This is the Sphere Bard Archetype;
Sphere Bard:
Casting: The sphere bard may combine spheres and talents
to create magical effects. The sphere bard is considered a MidCaster and uses Charisma as his casting ability modifier. (Note:
All casters gain 2 bonus talents and may select a casting tradition the first time they gain the casting class feature.)
This replaces the spells class feature.
Spell Pool: The sphere bard gains a small reservoir of energy
she can call on to create truly wondrous effects, called a spell
pool. This pool contains a number of spell points equal to her
level + her Charisma modifier (minimum: 1). This pool replenishes once per day after roughly 8 hours of rest.
Magic Talents: A sphere bard gains 1 magic talent every time
she gains a caster level.
Recommended Casting Tradition: The classic feel of the
bard can be recreated through taking the verbal casting and
somatic casting drawbacks.
For Masterworks you could choose to gain one rather than a Talent each level. If you went for Spheres.
In the process of designing my character, I thought maybe having an evil chainsword would be nifty, especially as part of explaining her duality.
Kraken's Maw-
CL 11, moderate transmutation (evil)
It is said that this ancient weapon from another world was dredged up from the deepest trenches of the world by a Kraken at Besmara's behest. Once a tool aboard a ship that sailed the stars, the Kraken's Maw got its first taste of blood when used in a mutiny foul. The ship damaged during the mutiny, burned through the sky with a fire so hot that only the coldest depths finally quenched it. In this forge of senseless violence did the Kraken's Maw awaken to its desires, and its shape slowly changed and corrupted into a rusty weapon that glistens only when wet with blood. Since then, the Kraken's Maw has passed hands through a number of ill-fated captains, each one carving a bloody path to a grave in the deep.
When the Kraken's Maw inflicts a critical hit, its bloodlust reactivates the ancient twisted machinery, tearing the chainsaw's blades through the unfortunate victim. In addition to doing damage for the critical hit, the Kraken's Maw deals 2 points of constittuion damage and stuns the victim for 1 round (Fort DC 15 negates). Creatures immune to critical hits are immune to this Constitution damage and the stun effect.
The Kraken's Maw is treated as a favored weapon of Besmara.
Base Weapon Katana, 1d8, 18-20/x2, deadly, Slashing, 6 lbs, 50 gp.
+Fanged Falchion Special 8,000 gp
+Favored Weapon ???
Thoughts?
~~
Also, on the subject of spheres, if I combine Energy Weapon and Electric Blast, does my weapon attack benefit from the -3 to AC to targets in metal armor? Kind of like a magnetized blade-ish thing?
Finally, tell me if you decide on allowing Path of War for those other folks. If you do, I'll probably need to dip a level or a feat to keep up. I love Path of War, but if you don't specifically take weak options, you will exceed every non-Path of War martial.
What are casting traditions? I can't find information on them anywhere. Is it true that you don't automatically get somatic components on spells?
While looking up what discipline Bannerman gets from path of war expanded I found the following:
Quote:
Archetypes
Bannerman - The inspiring bannerman may add Piercing Thunder to their list of known disciplines as well as Acrobatics as a class skill. The mighty spears and polearms that are the hallmark of this discipline make for excellent standards for their banners.
Sidebar - The Bannerman and his Banner
While trying to leave it to the player and GM to determine if a banner is acceptable for the character in the method of how it is carried, we wanted to be more easy and unrestricted with it. Basically, we intended that you could put it on any manner of item so long as it is displayed. Some official ideas for how a bannerman may carry a banner: As heraldry on a shield, on a small pole mounted to either his mount’s saddle or to the back of his armor, it could be a tabard that they wear prominently, or a standard that hangs from a polearm or spear. So long as that standard is carried upon his person where people can see it, he can inspire these allies.
If this means I can mount a banner on the glaive after all then I'll probably go with that, though likely with a strength build instead of something based on spear dancing style. It costs way too much, both in terms of feats and actions.
oyzar wrote:
Casting traditions are at the end of the SoP pdf. Spheres do not start out requiring somatic components. Traditions are limitations on casting that come with added bonuses. For example, you could take the tradition that adds Somatic Components back in and net yourself a few extra spell points.
Finally got the crunch pretty much done. Can't wait to see if I get picked!
I feel like I read somewhere in a Path of War document specifically calling out the sashimono as a valid banner display. But I can't find it.
While the Casting traditions may be at the end of the SoP pdf, they are not at the end of the link we were given.
"The page wiki:casting-traditions you want to access does not exist."
I think it works with long spears. Don't quote me though.
Yeah, the wiki's incomplete. XD
Sometimes I just want to make my own...
I'll put out an open question for those with the PDF, what casting traditions are there for making things more cleric-ee? I was initially considering that before realizing that Incanter would give me everything I wanted out of cleric and still have points left over.
Also, Incanter gives 2 talents at level one, does this stack with the two talents gained for taking one's first level of a caster class or are these referring to the same thing? Stacking seems excessive, but hey, I'll take it.
Mostly this one. XD
Quote:
Divine Petitioner
A divine petitioner gains their magic through service and prayer to a divine source, such as a Deity. A divine petitioner must pray every day to regain their spell points, petitioning not only for their magic, but specifying how they intend to use it that day. Divine petitioners do everything in the name of their deity and find it difficult to even manifest their power unless they have their holy symbol in hand. A divine petitioner gains a bonus spell point at every odd level they gain in a spellcasting class.
Drawbacks: Verbal Casting, Focus Casting, Prepared Caster, Aligned Combatant (Destruction), Aligned Protection (Protection)
How do you mean? There's no benefits that give domains, if that's what you mean. The pdf does say to work with the GM so I suppose its a possibility if you really wanted.
Besides, y'know, the classes that DO give domain powers as benefits... XD
I'm allowing Path of War.
The weapon looks interesting, and I love the fluff. However, I'm not sure I see a katana making sense as the base, and it's also undercosted I feel. Loosing the unholy from a Fanged Falchion doesn't drops the price 14,000 gp I'm afraid.
And yup, it looks like you can combine those two talents together like that. Neat trick. I'll have to remember that one, it might make it sweet for a Vital Strike based build if they can be combined.
Looks like Bannerman is intended to have banners in odd places, so go for it.
And yes! You don't automatically have to suffer somatic stuff with Spheres, allowing even a wizard to wear plate.
Badly.
Anyone who does get in and doesn't have full access to the Spheres of Power stuff and does want to use it, I'll work with you to do a casting tradition.
The weapon is base 22,000 + weapon cost. +1 Unholy is equivalent to a +3 bonus. +3 Bonus is 16,000 thousand. So, my math was off by 2000 in the wrong direction, as it should be 6,000, meaning that the weapon is much closer to meeting the "max 50% of your money on one item" guideline. If you're saying you feel it's undercosted based on considerations of balance, I'd gladly take some number tweaks at your discretion. I love the fluff and bonus on crit mechanic other than "you do more damage".
I used Katana because it's a weapon that shares the same Crit-Range, Damage Type, and the Deadly weapon special with the chainsaw. If you've got an idea for a non chainsaw weapon that meets the chainsaw's stats better, I'm all ears. Besides, maybe it was a White Scars chainsword. :P
I do not believe it can be used with Vital Strike, though I'll totally accept it if you rule otherwise, cause I totally get a bonus feat at 6th level. :P
Bah, the White Scars are bike-riding wusses. Dark Angels are where it's at. Robes and emo moping wins the fight! Just...don't tell the Ravenwing I said that.
But yes, I feel it's undercosted more based on the con damage than anything else. I'm up for adding some interesting crit-based effects to the thing, however. Any ideas for something a little lower on the 'make the GM cry' scale? Bleed damage might be possible...
At our level, 2 Con damage is +5 damage and -1 to fortitude saves. And it only triggers on crits. But, sure, bleed damage would be fine*. You can set the numbers.
*If you choose that, would you mind if I eventually upgraded Kraken's Maw to Living Steel or some differently flavored variant thereof, so that when I get Weapon Material Mastery at level 9, my crits suppress fast heal/regeneration so that the bleed damage actually does something against opponents with those abilities?
