EltonJ's World of Greyhawk (Inactive)

Game Master EltonJ

Welcome to the World of Greyhawk, a world of low fantasy and fantastic magic. Where danger and adventure abound and awaits the foolhardy, the strong, and the brave.

Beyond the free city of Greyhawk lies the empire of Iuz, Nyrond, Yeomanry, and many other kingdoms, duchies, and counties (including the two separate territories of Urnst). Besides, it's the home of Vecna the undying, one of D&D's most beloved vile villains.

Dot...very interested. Greyhawk has always been a favorite of mine and to be able to start at 1 is perfect. Thanks for running this.

Not a problem.

Hey, any room for another player in this game of yours? And is it in roll20?

Submission time is open until Monday. And since Roll20 wasn't mentioned, I'm presuming the campaign will be run through the boards here.

Roll20 is an option, but I can only run it on Sundays though. My computer isn't built to be used for multimedia gaming. I don't have a microphone. But that doesn't stop me from running an Eberron game on roll20 every Saturday night.

If it's Roll20, I'm going to have to withdraw. I can only do my gaming on a tablet, and the Roll20 app is pure s&%~, the biggest reason being that I'd apparently need to physically scan a verification provided by you to join an R20 campaign you host. Which, you know, kind of defeats the whole point behind PbP to begin with.

I've taken into account on how you feel. Most people do expect play-by-post here. I only said roll20 is an option. If I'm going to run a roll20 game, I would have set up a separate thread for it.

RaveMan wrote:

A1. I'm going for six players at the most. Seven is pushing my abilities.

A2. I don't think so. Most people assume play-by-post here.

Are we required to use random background generation?

background:

Malayvin is a quiet reserved and almost bitter figure, though she hides it well. She grew up amongst the poorest of the poor grey elves in the kingdom of Celene (which lets face it, wasnt that bad really, but in comparison to her people . . .). Her parents were plain folk, cursed it seemed with bad luck in everything they tried to do. Her birth caused even more strain on her parents, and she was in her late childhood when her parents sent her to live at a nearby nobles estate.

She felt like her parents betrayed her of course, she was put to work in the kitchens and cleaning, two things she had no interest in. eventually as she grew older she grew into beauty... and it was that beauty that caught the attention of some of the soldiers of the guard. She didnt like their attention either but dealt with it... until her turning down of the advances of one of the lords officers led to him framing her for petty theft.

The beating wasnt so bad, but the outright ignorance of her protests of innocense over the valuble officers word fueled her. Almost a year passed of his continued pressures, and with a final vieled threat to have her punished for theft again she made up her mind. If she was to be labeled a theif and punished for it. . .

That very night she stole into the officers quarters and stole his prized sword. That wasnt the only thing she stole that night, she raided the kitchen and the household for goods and fled the lands. Her actions of course had her branded a thief or worse and she fled her homeland wandering and living off the wealth she had taken as a young adult eventually finding her way in the famed city of Greyhawk, the gem of the Flaeness. Petty thefts from merchants led to her discovery of the thieve's guild in the city, and she joined their orginization without hesistation and has been learning and stealing ever since.

She isnt particularly proud of her profession, but she will do what she deems necessary to survive, The rich and wealthy have more than enough to spare to line her pockets.

She is ready to be looked over, I will probably tidy up and edit the background some, but the gist of it is there.

Random background generation is an option.

I am submitting my bid for the game. Check out Sinch.

I like him.

Hey, Blue Drake's back. Anyway, after having a little bit of time to get used to it, I'm confident I have enough time to join another PbP or two. As for Spark, after really checking him out, I believed he just wasn't suited for a Greyhawk campaign, with the way goblins are different and such. Thought I'd use him for a different idea.

But! I got my hands on a copy of Heroes of Legends! I had a lot of fun creating a character completeling from scratch, including race. I didn't even choose the class until I finished, and by then, the background worked real smoothly into a barbarian class setup. I included the die rolls in case you were curious, but I was surprised how well it worked. I tried to work it into the Greyhawk campaign, but I'm not the most knowledgable about the whole setting, so if you see something wrong/inconsistent with the setting, I can change it. Anyway, here's Draguk up for perusal!

----------

Background:
Born at the witching hour on the longest night of the coldest winter anyone could remember, Draguk was marked from birth for a special heritage. He was born in a poor frost barbarian family, that became even more poor as the tribe went to war and his father was drafted into the military. Too young to take over the family's profession of farming, Draguk's family did what they could to get by. This did not help, though, when the war was brought to their doorstep. The village was razed, and only a few made it out alive besides Draguk. The rest of Draguk's family did not.

Believing all hope lost, Draguk left the ruined tribe that was his home and wandered until he stumbled upon a half-orc encampment. Happening upon what was probably the kindest half-orc in the tribe, Draguk was taken in and taught the ways of both the orc and human. It was here that he took on the second name of Makoa. The other young half-orcs accepted him in easily, most of the people being cast-outs themselves.

When the main orc tribe in the region began to press their tribe into service for his wars, the tribe decided to revolt, denying any allegiance to the distant orcs. Battle ensued, and Draguk Makoa was once again orphaned. The survivors traveled south to one of the civilized cities of the humans. Most of them were scorned at, but at least they had a place to live.

Life in the city was hard, and Draguk and his friends soon turned to crime to get by. At first, it was just simple burglary. Stake out a place, send the best in, and grab the smallest, most expensive item to sell off. However, Ausk, the leader of their rag-tag bunch, became bold and found a target that would set them for life. One noble, widow women's house was seen as an easy target, so they staked it out, and headed in when they thought the coast clear.

However, the noble women soon returned with her friend that was attempting to help her in her depression. Finding the ruffians in her home, the noble's friend suddenly dispatched them with a few bolts of magic. Draguk became the target of the noble's questioning, left alive only for information. Not knowing what to do, Draguk let his tongue take over, and he was singing a tale of how he had admired her beauty so much, he couldn't help but seek but a portion of her possessions. Her friend saw straight through the act, but the noble, besought by depression, was moved and instantly offered him servitude in her home for his life. Not wanting to die, he agreed.

Treated well by the obssesive noble, Draguk soon found himself more in the role of an adopted son than a servant. Living a life much better than he was used to, Draguk found it all overwhelming, until he met Rose, that is. Rose, his first love, and only child of the noble woman, the two found themselves together more and more, making the needy noble woman more and more jealous as she felt her one-sided love spurned.

Then, they found out that they had gotten together one too many times as Rose became pregnant. Hiding for as long as she could, it was only a matter of time until her mother found out about the illegitimate pregnancy. Furious about the unknown relationship, and not knowing about Draguk being the father, the noble woman kept Rose under a tight leash until the child, or rather, children were born. Much like the night that Draguk was born on, Rose gave birth to a set of healthy triplets.

Refusing to be left out of his children's lives, Draguk's true relationship with Rose soon surfaced, and the noble snapped with her one-sided adoration of the boy. Feeling betrayed, she sold her daughter and grandchildren to a slaver. Upon finding out, Draguk rushed to save them, only for the slaver to instead murder them in the attempt. After killing the slaver brutally, Draguk returned to the noble's house and finished his revenge on the woman, murdering her in the night.

Fleeing the town, Draguk started anew in the next town he came to, the capital city of Krakenheim. Without many skills and still greiving over his lost love and children, Draguk joined himself unto a glassmaker guild leader, working as security for the business. However, as the country went into a supposed holy war, Draguk was pressed into service in order to reach the guild leader's necessary amount of levied troops. With no special skills in weapons, Draguk found himself with the footmen, a shield and sword in hand. Under the pretense of religious guidance, they struck out at the Aerdians Imperial troops.

Draguk's division was led by a strong, conservative knight in the employ of the guild leader. His newly wed wife had joined the division to help tend to the troops. Having the personality and appearance of his dearly beloved Rose, Draguk soon found himself falling for the woman named Valerie.

Several long battles left their numbers descimated, and Draguk was wounded several times over the course of his two years of service. When not able to fight, the levied men were forced into repairing armor to keep them from being idle. Disease and low moral swept through the ranks, but Valerie was a beckon of hope and cheerfulness on the bleak plane. Each time she tended to his wounds, both physical and emotional, she brought him peace and tranquility.

It was during the last such time that she was tending to him that he confessed his growing affection for her. Refusing to accept his love because of her marriage, he did not receive visits from her again. Driven into a state of dejection and rage, Draguk tore into the enemy ranks in the remaining major battles. He was soon renowned for holding off a contigent while his group withdrew, as well as slaying the enemy leader during the last horrific battle that became known as the battle of Shamblefield.

With the enemy leader dead, the battle ended, though their side could not claim victory with such losses. With a full-scale retreat, the frost barbarians stayed their forces to lick their wounds while the other forces took control of the contested land. Draguk's own contingent had lost their leader, Valerie's husband. Both widows and deeply scarred emotionally, they soon found solace in each other's arms. Upon returning to the city with her, Draguk promptly used what meagre coin he had to buy her a ring, and they were married.

Without a proper home or a proper profession, Draguk sought the guild leader's help. With his reputation, the guild leader did not want to send him away, but he also did not have much to offer him with all his losses from the war. Finally, he offered Draguk a deal. He could go to the free city of Greyhawk, where several adventurers traveled to seek out wealth. He would be given time to find his fortune, whether it be in battle, establishing a trade, or other more devious means. While he did that, the guild leader would make sure his wife was taken care of as well as his own.

Fearing to leave her, but unable to find another solution, Draguk swore an oath to return when he could and left the capital behind. As he traveled, he felt he had left more and more of himself in that place way up north.

Rage (Ex) - A barbarian can call upon inner reserves of strength and ferocity, granting her additional combat prowess. At 1st level, a barbarian can rage for a number of rounds per day equal to 4 + her Constitution modifier. For each level after 1st she possesses, the barbarian can rage for 2 additional rounds per day. Temporary increases to Constitution, such as that gained from bear's endurance, do not increase the total number of rounds that a barbarian can rage per day. A barbarian can enter a rage as a free action. The total number of rounds of rage per day is renewed after resting for 8 hours, although these hours need not be consecutive.

While in a rage, a barbarian gains a +2 bonus on melee attack rolls, melee damage rolls, thrown weapon damage rolls, and Will saving throws. In addition, she takes a –2 penalty to Armor Class. She also gains 2 temporary hit points per Hit Die. These temporary hit points are lost first when a character takes damage, disappear when the rage ends, and are not replenished if the barbarian enters a rage again within 1 minute of her previous rage. While in a rage, a barbarian cannot use any Charisma-, Dexterity-, or Intelligence-based skill (except Acrobatics, Fly, Intimidate, and Ride) or any ability that requires patience or concentration (such as spellcasting).

A barbarian can end her rage as a free action, and is fatigued for 1 minute after a rage ends. A barbarian can't enter a new rage while fatigued or exhausted, but can otherwise enter a rage multiple times per day. If a barbarian falls unconscious, her rage immediately ends.

Fast Movement (Ex) - A barbarian's base speed is faster than the norm for her race by 10 feet. This benefit applies only when she is wearing no armor, light armor, or medium armor, and not carrying a heavy load. Apply this bonus before modifying the barbarian's speed because of any load carried or armor worn. This bonus stacks with any other bonuses to the barbarian's base speed.

Blue Drake,

After checking the map of Greyhawk in the back of the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer, there are a few places where he could come from:

  • The Wolf Nomads
  • The Tiger Nomads
  • The Olman Islands
  • Tenh
  • Krakenhiem with the Ice Barbarians. Is he a Suel, or a Flan?

  • Been trying to read more of the Gazetteer. He is a Suel, from a now decimated tribal village in the northern part of the Forst Barbarians, or the Kingdom of Fruztii. His last location, where he left his wife, is the capital, Krakenhiem. I've written a bit more for him as well:

    Appearance and Personality:
A large, gruff man, Draguk takes after his father, a pure Suliose blood. Pale skinned, with piercing blue eyes, he seems to carry the north with him wherever he goes. However, though he may seem cold and rough, he has a warm kindness about him to others, a trait he has taken from his adopted half-orc parents. Few see the side of his fury that usually arises when someone hurts the ones he loves, mostly because they do not live long.

Like most of the frost barbarians, Draguk has a temper that sends him into a rage when it comes to the surface, and few things now anger him as much as betrayal and hurting those he loves. He wears the fur of his native people, even in the south, and wears the traditional face paint of a tribal man, despite his lack of a tribe. He has reddish hair, the signature sign of a barbarian rager amongst his people.

Though he has fought with a sword and shield before, he currently only has the weapon that lasted him in his last campaign in the Bone March, his previous shield being shattered. Armed with only a few other survival items, his demeanor speaks of his constant life of poverty.

    ----------

    Character Progression:
The current route for Draguk is to go full barbarian to 20 (should we reach that). He's going to be a hard hitter like most barbarians, with tanking abilities using DR, high HP, and energy resistance. Mainly for combat, he'll be relying on others for skills and healing.

    ---------

Let me know if anything's unclear.

    no, it's quite clear.

"Hey there lubbers, I hear ye be recruitin' adventurers an' such! I'm to be puttin' me name for'ard fer the position. They calls me Morley Hastings, an' I'm yer man fer when ye needs somethin' blowed up. An alchemist by trade, a sailor by experience, and needin' a job by, uh, tomorrow!."

Hey everyone! I'm just sliding in before the deadline here with Morley, a grenadier alchemist. I've never played in Greyhawk before, and I'm looking forward to knowing the world as well as Morley does.

I don't have the crunch done on this alias yet (everything in here is just copy-pasted from another character for purposes of format), but here's his background:

    Background:

Morley was born to a dockside whore in the port town of Duxchan. He doesn’t consider this the beginning of his life, though. His first ten years were nothing but scrabbling with the other dock rats for the bare essentials of life, and avoiding this mother’s fists and feet when she’d been drinking – which was all the time.

No, his life begins at about ten years old (he isn’t sure exactly) when he was caught hiding among the bags and barrels of foodstuffs aboard a trading ship bound for the Azure Sea. He had slipped aboard to see if anything was worth pilfering and was belowdecks when the rest of the crew came back aboard. Unable to sneak off with all the activity up top, he hid and hoped for a miracle. Soon the ship put out to sea, and he was found hiding in a corner of the hold gnawing on a piece of ship’s biscuit. His miracle came in the form of a sick cabin boy. When he was dragged before the captain, it was decided that rather than throw him overboard he would fill in for the boy, who had been bedridden for a week. When the former cabin boy died retching in his bed a few days later, Morley had what he’d never had before: a place where he belonged. Thus began the real life of Morley Hastings.

Nobody survives long on the streets unless they’re quick witted, so it didn’t take him long to learn the ways of the ship. Before long Morley was indispensable to the captain, doing all the little things that let him focus on the bigger picture of sailing the ship. The next few years were filled with excitement for the boy, and he grew into a young man while doing the rounds of the Azure Sea aboard a sailing vessel. As a commoner, he would never be able to become an officer on the ship, and by his mid twenties he had already climbed to the peak of his career, and the position of boatswain. As the man in charge of the maintenance and stores of the ship, he found a talent for tinkering and working with his hands.

He recently retired from sailing, after about 40 years at sea. He had enough savings to set himself up as an apothecary in a small town on the coast of Idee, where he fixes remedies for the local populace as well as the garrison of the nearby fort. All was going well until one of his medicines reacted badly for the commander of the garrison, and he was dragged in chains into the cells, ready to be tried and hanged for murder. By using a small vial of acid he had secreted in his clothes, he was able to dissolve his manacles as well as the lock on his door and escape while the guards were drunkenly snoring at their post. He’s been on the move ever since, looking for another place to settle down. First, though, he has to raise enough money to open another shop. Maybe by joining a group of adventurers he could strike it big?

Hey! He actually volunteered. We have someone to detect traps now! Quick, let's see how far we can hurl him!

Hey! He actually volunteered. We have someone to detect traps now! Quick, let's see how far we can hurl him!

He's volunteering to be a part of the party. Still musing on the Orient in the Far West of Oerik. If you want to throw an alchemist, you throw someone who uses mutagens.

If Dragon Cat can make another list for me, that would be great.

Well, I think I have the crunchy stuff done except for gear, so here goes my money roll:

    Starting Gold: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 4) = 9
Ah well, let's see what I can get for 90 gold.

Also just an FYI, Morley isn't a front line fighter, he's more of a stand in the back and chuck status-effect bombs kind of guy. I hope nobody expects him to down a mutagen and hulk out lol.

Eh, not a problem. Kayin too is, in spite of his current fighter level and future battle mysteries, also a support type. In fact, looking over some of the possible bomb debuffs, Kayin and Morley would be an effective support duo, with the latter's status bombs setting up the former's trips, which the whole party then ruthlessly takes advantage of.

And we'll find out later today who will be doing what in any case.

    By your command.

    Martial
    Apollon Cyr (Human Unchained Monk)
    Zakh'rii Kreinkun (Dragonborn Fighter)
Kayin Ashok (Kitsune Fighter *Lore Warden*; future Oracle multiclass)
Draguk Makoa (Human Unchained Barbarian *Invincible Rager*)
    Sinch (Human Fighter)

    Arcane
    Lia Nightbreeze (Half-Elf Bonded Witch)
    Morley Hastings (Human Alchemist *Grenadier*)

    Divine
Kartin Helgunnr (Human Oracle of Battle)
    Briena Warlen (Human Druid)

    Skill
Baldwin of St. Cuthbert (Human Inquisitor of St. Cuthbert)
Malayvin Ai Illiurda (Elf Unchained Rogue)

    Silver Crusade

I built Katrin to be a mix of a front line fighter, buffer and support character. As a War Oracle she has proficiency with martial weapons and heavy armor so should be able to fight in the front lines while at the same time providing healing support for the party. Katrin is rather quick to act though due to her Oracle curse. Expect her to leap into a battle with swiftly yelling "By the will of Heironeous!"

The following people will be in the game:

  • Zakh'rii Kreinkun
  • Sinch
  • Lia Nightbreeze
  • Morley Hastings
  • Briena Warlen
  • Baldwin of St. Cuthbert
  • Malayvin Ai Illiurda

You all made good characters, and I had to choose carefully. That's seven characters all together. Recruitment is closed for this round. Save your characters for another Greyhawk game, or adjust them for a different game. And my alias covers my list.

  • Ah well. Hope those chosen have fun!

Don't worry, Sam. There will be a possible Starfinder campaign in the summer, early fall. That depends on work and if my other games tank.

Much excite! Thanks GM! Looking forward to it...

    Thanks, GM! :)

    Yeah, it was tough.

So, there is a post on the gameplay thread. Go and enjoy yourselves. No, you're not starting in a tavern.

    Sweeeet!

Eh, I got an awesome character and character building tool out of it. Thanks for mentioning Heroes of Legend. Love it. And good luck all.
