Glad it's you guys up there, I don't fancy rolling any sorts of acrobatics check with all the armor check penalty Palisade has ;^)

"Query. Do you see if the door can be unlocked from the inside?" Palisade asked, feeling anxious with Lady d'Deneith up on the roof and both it and Squeak down on ground level. It simply hoped Lady d'Deneith would see to it that the more expendable two would be the first ones down into the room, to make certain there was nothing alive or animate awaiting.

BTW, I'll be out of the office for the next two days so don't expect much from me during the day. I should still be able to post early mornings and late evenings.

Rathan looked down into the room below noting the rooms contents. Not seeing any obvious threats he considered jumping down into the room below but prudently decided against it.

He started to rummage through his pack and muttered softly to himself, "Rope." Finding what he was looking for he looks for a place to secure his grappling hook on the crumbling rooftop.

Once the rope is secured the barbarian advised the women, "I first." Then he lowered himself hand over hand into the rubble strewn room. Upon reaching the bottom he immediately drew his blade and waited for the others to follow.

Arleth waited until he was down, then said, "Are you staying up here? To cover us?" When the wizard nodded, Arleth climbed down behind Rathan.

Squeak waited impatiently outside.
"I don't like that we can't see her." he told Palisade - not specifying who 'her' was. He paced impatiently a few more times, then called out "Status?"

Bronwyn imagined the 'forged pacing below and it brought a smile to her face for some reason. When Squeak's query reached her ears she called back down, "Rathan and Arleth are just going inside."

Palisade nodded, well satisfied with the marching order. "Helpful suggestion. In the case of the slow and painful demise of individuals Arleth Fadi and Rathan Two-Tribes due to hidden traps or sentries, please pay close attention to the exact manner of their deaths so we can more reliably circumvent said threats."

"That is unacceptable, Palisade. I'm surprised at you." Squeak responded in a firm voice "Their deaths would have proven this area to dangerous for Bronwyn to remain in."
Squeak hesitated "Do you think their parts are compatible? If only one dies, and the other is horribly maimed, I could try scavenging the dead for parts to repair the living."

The red area is the forge (not lit of course) and the yellow area are metal tiles in front of the forge.

"Oh, come ON!" Arleth swore. "This place has been empty for centuries, but these guys are still on guard?"

Raising her voice, she said, "Got two mechanical dogs in here, look tough. Could use some help!"

To Rathan, she said, "Cover me." Then she ran back to the door and prayed to the host that she could open them from the inside.

Moment of truth - can she open them?

Right, thanks, I usually forget to look at the rolls.

Hmmm...my head will be chewed off by then. Back up the rope it is! Well, depending on what the others do.

Female Human Fire Adept Wizard/5 | HP 32 | Init +2 | AC12 | Mage armor AC15 |

Bronwyn cursed the distance she was away from the others. It meant that she was too far away to throw fire at the dogs. In hindsight, the dog crushed by roof rubble should have alerted them to the possibility of more of them. She also knew that she wasn't good climbing rope - she still had the rope burns to prove it. Not having many options because of the distance, she pulls out one of the scrolls she recently purchased. Reading the magic off the parchment, she caused a patch of grease to form under the dog that was attacking Arleth in hopes that it would lose its footing and buy the half-elf more time.

Using the Grease scroll on Arleth's dog

Calling out over her shoulder she said, "Palisade and Squeak, the other two are in trouble. Arleth is trying to open the door and they'll need your help if successful."

Calling down to the halfling and half-elf she said, "Don't spend too much time down there. If you need to, climb back up the rope."

Much to Bronwyn's chagrin and probably the 'forged, she'll enter the fray next round if things look dire.

Rathan was about to respond to Arleth when he felt a deep red anger boil inside him as the mechanical dog's teeth sank into him. He used that anger as he lashed out at the hound that bit him.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Damage: 1d8 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15

Palisade hesitated. "Doubtful assumption. Initial assembly done by unskilled labourers. This one doubts factory standards or quality controls are implemented." Unless there was some kind of a certification test for new parents? The idea seemed sound, but Palisade had found humans in particular being extraordinary illogical about various other things.

Would love to climb up to join the fray, but...

Climb: 1d20 + 2 - 7 ⇒ (7) + 2 - 7 = 2

Palisade's immediate reaction was to try to scamper up the side of the building to get close to Lady d'Deneith, but the weight of its armoured body defied it's will as the aged stone crumbled under its fingers, denying purchase.

Climb is a move action so you get two tries per round unless you do something else.

Only DC 10...

EDIT: I was just looking at your sheet. When you climb the shield penalty does NOT apply. Also the shield and greatsword are incompatible so let's remember that as well when in melee.

It may be moot if Arleth and Rathan come back up the rope but I was wondering if Bronwyn could use featherfall to get herself 5ft down the rope so she can cast burning hands at the dogs? With bracing herself with the rope and falling slowly, it would kind of be like she was levitating 15ft off the ground so that she could cast.

I have a feeling the answer will be either a flat out 'no' or else 'sure, go ahead' and then have her fall to her doom alone, unable to climb back up the rope because she is so, so weak.

male

Feather fall and grabbing on to the rope would be Ok. You know I like player inventiveness. :)

Just let me know.

Arleth: whatcha ya doin'?

I'd like to recap in the next couple of hours...

Female Human Fire Adept Wizard/5 | HP 32 | Init +2 | AC12 | Mage armor AC15 |

We'll see what Arleth does. If she's not on the rope, Bronwyn will attempt what she proposed.

Current Face: Mei'Vi, elven explorer AC 15 | HP45/45 | Saving Throws: Dex, Int | Init +3 | Perc +8 | Invis ring charges left 1/3 | Inspiration 1/1

Not liking her options, Arleth drew a dagger and attacked the metal hound with it. She saw what looked like a weak spot in the creature's armour, but with its full attention on her, she couldn't take advantage of it. She stepped slightly forward as she attacked, hoping the creature would move so that it stood between her and Rathan.

hit dog: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
damage: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1

Can you use AP for damage? If so, I'll take one please!

Female Human Fire Adept Wizard/5 | HP 32 | Init +2 | AC12 | Mage armor AC15 |

if grease works on the dog, it may fall and you'd get sneak attack damage on it when it loses its dex.

I already had written Bronwyn using the Grease scroll before asking about featherfall so I didn't think she'd be able to change her action.

Female Human Fire Adept Wizard/5 | HP 32 | Init +2 | AC12 | Mage armor AC15 |

Alright then. Let's see what happens...although I'm always highly suspicious when the GM allows my character to change their mind.

EDIT

Bronwyn cursed the distance she was away from the others. It meant that she was too far away to throw fire at the dogs. In hindsight, the dog crushed by roof rubble should have alerted them to the possibility of more of them. She also knew that she wasn't good climbing rope - she still had the rope burns to prove it. Struck by inspiration, she pulls out one of the scrolls she recently purchased.

Calling out over her shoulder she said, "Palisade and Squeak, the other two are in trouble. Arleth is trying to open the door but they need help. I have to go in."

Reading the magic off the parchment, she caused herself to repel the law of gravity so that she'd fall slower. She then grabs the rope and slowly guides her descent until she's in range to throw flame at the dogs. Knowing she'd need her hands free, she ties the rope around her waist to keep herself in place.

Using featherfall scroll and descending about 5ft down the rope so that the dogs will be in range to cast burning hands next round.

Calling down to the halfling and half-elf she said, "It's about to get real hot down there for the dogs. Try to keep them grouped at the bottom of the rope."

Does Eberron have a Cirque du Soleil equivalent? Maybe Bronwyn will have a new occupation.

Squeak became frantic as the noise of the battle rose. "Switch." he demanded of Palisade, adding one of his concoctions to his intake, then desperately trying to climb the other Forged's body to reach the top. The thrum of magic in his body changed as he surged with new power.

Lady d'Deneith's words caused Palisade to redouble its efforts to try to reach the top of the building, to prevent the Lady from doing something as rash as she obviously intended. This time the added motivation proved enough, and Palisade reached the roof seconds after the othe warforged.

Climb: 1d20 + 2 - 7 ⇒ (18) + 2 - 7 = 13 Ahaa!

The time-worn stone groaned threateningly under the combined weight of the two ‘forged, but Palisade didn’t take note of that minor fact – there was no Lady d’Deneith up there anymore, she had already made good her promise to join the fray below. Thus there was no reason to remain up there for Palisade either. Reaching for its sword as it moved, Palisade took a couple of running steps, caught sign of one of the animate guardian constructs below and jumped, aiming to land on one of the creatures, hoping it would break its fall and suffer in the process.

So... one move to get up. How 'bout jumping down to land on top of one of the constructs? Since with my luck Palisade's gonna drop anyway, if it tries to climb down normally. What kind roll would that be?

The dogs are not 'under' the hole so you can't jump on them.

Besides, you're liable to hit Bronwyn who is dangling from a rope a feet feet from the ground.

I intend to recap later today.

So is there no safe way down until Bronwyn gets out of the way? If so, the most logical thing would be to haul her up - get her to safety and open the way to join the battle in one fell swoop ;^)

Excelent. She can be mad later, as long as she is safe right now! Let's replace the latter part of my post with this, then:

The time-worn stone groaned threateningly under the combined weight of the two ‘forged, but Palisade didn’t take note of that minor fact – there was no Lady d’Deneith up there anymore, she had already made good her promise to join the fray below. The 'forged rushed to where it could see a rope anchored for safe descent, and was overjoyed to find Lady d'Deneith still clinging to it while she was working her magic. A quick calculation suggested there was little chance for it to jump down to join the battle without taking the Lady down under his bulk, but her present position opened new options.

"Suggestion. Hang tight," Palisade said as it reached for the rope, twisted it once around its wrist and began backing away slowly from the hole in the roof, taking the rope - and Bronwyn - with it.

Current Face: Mei'Vi, elven explorer AC 15 | HP45/45 | Saving Throws: Dex, Int | Init +3 | Perc +8 | Invis ring charges left 1/3 | Inspiration 1/1

Arleth was bleeding from multiple wounds, while her attacker had barely a scratch. At this rate, she'd be dead long before she got any help. Time for some defence. Grabbing the wand from her belt, she said the activation word, triggering another hour of protection.

Wand of mage armour. I think grabbing the wand is a move action, and using it is standard?

Male Warforged Artificer (Alchemist) 5. AC 21. HP 43/43. HD 5/5, 1st 4/4. 2nd 2/2.

Bronwyn yelped in surprise as she started to be lifted back towards the roof. If she had both feet on the ground, she may have stamped her foot in protest but alas she was suspended. "Stop it! I'm going to be out of range to help them."

Vi was close to death. Her body was a limp rag-doll in the creature's maw, and her blood streamed from between its teeth. Her heart beat faltered, and her breath bubbled weakly in her throat, where it mixed with blood.

Thought and will became less than a memory, and the mental imprint of "Arleth" vanished from her cells. Her body changed, back into her natural form for the first time in more than a year. Tattoos and fake dragon-mark vanished, and her skin changed from tanned to pale grey. The braids in her brown hair unravelled as the hair faded to white. In a few seconds, the dying body bore no resemblance to Arleth, other than the clothes it wore.

Ugh, still mad that there are no even half-way good changeling avatars. This is as close as I could come.

Bronwyn watched in horror as Arleth went limp. The wizard herself was suspended in the air and she was unable to do anything until she realized that she didn't need the rope to keep from falling. Hoping that her featherfall spell would last a little longer, she tugs the knot free that she had made and releases herself from the rope. Bronwyn drifts towards the floor, just as Rathan kills the remaining construct.

As soon as Bronwyn touches down, she digs frantically in Arleth's pack for a healing potion. She's just about to pour it down her throat when Arleth's body begins to change. The wizard watches in fascination as Arleth's new form is revealed. However, knowing the rogue doesn't have much time she quickly recovers and gives the potion to Arleth. She then yells up to the roof, "Palisade, Arleth needs your help. Can you get down here?"
