Barek Hisdren |
"Hell no. I do not want to spend a night under the roof of Foxglove's family. Not when we've seen what's happened to all of them. I think we should try to cut through the swarm and get out."
So we have, what 7 splash weapons? Can we treat Cure potions as splash weapons against an undead swarm?
DM DoctorEvil |
So we have, what 7 splash weapons? Can we treat Cure potions as splash weapons against an undead swarm?
I did a quick rules check on this, and surfed the Messageboards. It seems the consensus is that potions are meant to be taken internally and therefore wouldn't be effective as a splash weapon. Oils, which are for external use, could be used as a splash weapon in a manner you suggest however. I think that makes logical sense, and will apply it as a ruling here.
I am waiting until you reach a clear decision, and then will likely have initiatives and see how a potential combat sorts out. You can choose to go back inside also and deal with more of the house.
Selena Magnimar |
Ready to head out after casting Cat's grace on who wants it to take out the blackbirds. I believe that Barek and Miri also want to leave at all costs. Tunder, Seldon?
RichD with the knowledge checks would Selena know if weapons could damage them even if the damage is reduced?
Selena Magnimar |
Selena casts bear's endurance on Barek and cats grace on Miri. Once that is done then she hands a couple of flasks to Tunder (your choice of which 2 you want) as she makes to leave the house and race to safety and freedom.

22 Carrion 2
20 Mirela
16 Carrion 3
16 Carrion 4
14 Selena
12 Barek
5 Carrion 1
4 Tunder
The action starts right after the casting of spells by Selena. if you choose not to act, please tell me so. The swarms are surprised, so you will get a free short round. Remember, this is surprise round, so move or standard action only, not both.
Seldon Swiftheel |
Seldon prepares himself to hurl a vial of holy water at the swarm when it approaches.
Readied toss: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8 of all the...
Point Blank Damage: 2d4 + 1 ⇒ (2, 4) + 1 = 7
Selena Magnimar |
Limited on option selena ops to try a different tactic as she draws a wand out from her pack. She had only used it once before and wasn't sure if the Carrionstorm would believe it or not she just had to hope for the best.

Carrion Swarms - Surprise Round - continued
Seldon holds a flask of holy water, readying to toss it if the swarms move within throwing range, but for now, the swarm of birds just sits, staring at the heroes on the porch.
Selena, unsure if it will work, draws out her illusion making wand, hoping to confuse or distract the birds when the assault commences.
Tunder takes both an acid flask and a vial of holy water, ready to lob them at the birds should they stir.
Waiting on actions from the magically enhanced Mirela and Barek, which I assume, will actually start the combat. I will post tonight, if no action before that.
Barek Hisdren |
Barek pulls out his alchemist fire, holding one in each hand. "We should spread out, so they can't mob us all at once." He moves west 20 feet to prepare the the carrionbirds.
On my tablet. Can someone move Barek 20 feet west?
Mirela Malvo |
Sorry for the absence! Busy week at work.
Nodding at Barek nervously, Mirela draws her rapier more for show and heads northwest. Waiting for the carrion to see her, Mirela prepares to defend herself by dodging and weaving.
Move action, and then full defense. When they engage her, she'll peel off next round which will spark an AoO, but her AC at that point will be crazy between mobility and full defense, so she'll just keep one group going while you guys deal with the others?
Seldon Swiftheel |
Holy Water (point blank, touch): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Damage: 2d4 + 1 ⇒ (1, 4) + 1 = 6
Seldon will sweep north, holding onto his grenade until the swarm closes in.
I have horribly angered the dicebot, it seems. Two nat-one's in a row!
DM DoctorEvil |
Carrion Swarms - Round 1 - continued[/b]
Seldon moves to the north, and readies an action to launch his holy water if the undead bird swarm moves within throwing range.
As the heroes start to leave the porch, different flights of birds take off in different directions, almost moving with a group sentience. Swarm 2 takes off first, heading for Mirela and swarming around her, flying into her, pecking and clawing at her, and generally causing a distraction.
Mirela dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Anyone damaged by the swarms, must make a DC 11 Fort save or be nauseated for one round. So Total Defense and Moblity are nice, but swarms are auto-hit if in the area. On the bright side, they don't make AoO. Mirela is up now, I show her at 23/35 hp right now.
Mirela Malvo |
Sorry, long weekend up north of the border, so I was up at the cottage the last several days. Shoot, didn't realize that swarms are auto-hit.
Realizing her plan was not a great one, Mirela quickly decides to change course of action "Seldon! I'm going to need some help!
Mirela will run past Seldon, and if he can hit them with the holy water than great... otherwise, not sure what we can do here with energy channel; think we might be spending the night here afterall?
Seldon Swiftheel |
"Ai eleana there are too many!" the elf says, the shrill sound of despair on his voice.
DM DoctorEvil |
Carrion Swarms - Round 1 - continued
Mirela starts to run, then changes her course, skirting by Seldon to aid his toss of holy water.
Parts of t6 the birds smash and peck and whirl about him, Barek gets hit and the dizzying scene, causes him to be nauseated for one round as well.
More of the carrionstorm breaks off after Mirela, smashing into her for 2 dmg, but she does not get nauseated by the swarm this time.
Swarm dmg, Barek: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Barek DC 11 Fort save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Swarm 4 dmg, Mirela: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Mirela DC 11 Fort save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Nauseated creatures may make a single move action only, and no standard action in their turn. I have Miri at 21 and Barek at 17 hps. Selena and Barek are up now before the last swarm moves in.
Selena Magnimar |
Selena tries to distract some of the swarms as she uses the wand to create a replica of herself as far out as possible (south of Barek). If that works then she lets everyone know to make a break for it and run as fast as possible to put as much distance between the house and the swarms as possible.
DM DoctorEvil |
Carrion Storms - Round 1 - continued
Selena uses her illusory wand to create a replica of herself standing near Barek, in order to try to draw out the swarms.
Barek himself, still nauseated by the dizzying swarm, stumbles out of the cloud of birds, and onto the porch near Tunder.
The last swarm of birds swirls into the air, and apparently isn't fooled by the illusory Selena, as it takes after Seldon instead, swarming and spinning around the elf's head for just 1 hp dmg.
Swarm 1 DC 11 Will: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Swarm 1 dmg, Seldon: 1d6 ⇒ 1
Finally, to end the round, Tunder has an action if any. Seldon up first in the next round.
Mirela Malvo |
Glancing behind herself anxiously, Mirela assesses the situation and yells "It's not good! Back into the house!" Breaking into a full sprint, Mirela reluctantly makes for the Foxglove Manor.
Running back to the mansion! Guess we're camping out for the night."
Seldon Swiftheel |
DC 11 Fort: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Seldon will withdraw back into the house.
Selena Magnimar |
Noty having the swarms fall for her ruse Selena lets the others in past her. I agree as much as I hate it. We must wait here till morning till we can recover enough to either purge this place from its evil taint once and for all or find a way to break through the swarms of carrion that are plaguing us outside. If nothing else in the morning I can prepare another spell to speed our efforts and perhaps outrun them all for a short period of time.
Where should we spend the night? None of the room that we felt the evil presence for sure. What does that leave us with?
Seldon Swiftheel |
"Well, I'd rather a feather bed than the cellars." the elf says, wearily. He begins to plod his way up the stairs. "The spirits upstairs lie dormant for now. There should be room enough. We might even be lucky enough to find a meal in the cellars, but I'd not risk disturbing anymore spirits..."

22 Carrion 2
20 Mirela
16 Carrion 3
16 Carrion 4
14 Selena
12 Barek
5 Carrion 1
4 Tunder
Fighting his way through the cloud of undead birds, Seldon also rushes for the door of the creepy Misgivings Manor.
One of the swarms flies straight for the illusory Selena, and disintegrates the ghostly form in a swirling mass of feathers, beaks and talons.
Mirela retreats safely back to the house, slamming the door as the swarms smash into the house before giving up and returning to their perches along the ruined outbuilding.
End of Combat
No XP's earned for this fight as you didn't hit or take out any of the swarms of carrion birds.
DM DoctorEvil |
AS the party huddles back in side the safety(?) of the house, the wind shrieks gales of laughter in your ears. The front foyer, has the stuffed trophy manticore which leers at you malevolently from its perch. The hallway back to the dining area has the smashed hole in the floor from the revenant that was once Iesha Foxglove and is now at rest. That hole leads to the basement, and from there to the underground caverns.
The dining area in the back of the house has been glimpsed but not thoroughly explored. There are several unopened doors on the ground floor yet to explore.
Reattached the original ground floor map. What is the plan now?
Barek Hisdren |
"Should we explore the house to see what it holds or just hole up in one room for the night?"

Selena Magnimar |
Selena looks a bit abashed at the idea of everyone sharing a room even though it might be safer that way. Perhaps we could find adjoining rooms. One for the ladies and one for the gentlemen at this time. We will be close enough that we will still hear each other and be able to come help if anything happens.
As to where to sleep perhaps upstairs would be agreeable as there was some beds up there was there not? I hope that those rooms would be safe through the night. Perhaps we should set a watch just in case. I will take the first watch as I am not that tired right now as my nerves are still a bit frayed and I need to settle down a bit first as well.
DM DoctorEvil |
There were a few rooms with actual beds still in them upstairs on upper floor. None of the rooms were directly adjacent, but they were close (within 20' or so) together. Those rooms generally only have one ingress or egress also, and might be easier to defend than this entry foyer. But the choice is yours.
Seldon Swiftheel |
Let's rest up. I could try a consecration spell on the manor/that nasty mould patch in the morning. Has anybody taken any ability damage?
"Sometimes the stars lead us through trying paths. Sometimes to feather beds. It is best not to question the whims of the immortals." the elf nods, sagely. "Especially when it comes to sleeping on the floor."
Spells: SM III, magic circle vs evil ||consecration, lesser restoration, protection from evil || bless water, detect undeadx2, prot evil || light, detect magic, mending

"Selena's right though. Lets post a guard just in case something else is still here."

Selena Magnimar |
Selena finds a room that is large enough to hold everyone upstairs. Once that is accomplished then she will string a sheet from the bed across the room to give Miri and herself some privacy. I will watch from the hallway and come get you Barek when it is your shift.
Updating spells shortly if that is okay.
Mirela Malvo |
With a casual shrug, Mirela adds with a wink "Eh, I've shared quarters with much less respectable gentlemen than our present company Selena, but if you feel more comfortable, by all means... proceed with the sheet."
Coughing horribly, everyone is reminded of Mirela's current condition as she slowly slumps to the ground "Uh, I really wish we could've got the hell out of here, my health is fading I fear... Aldern may get his wish in the end after all." Pulling a blanket over herself, Mirela shivers as she tries remain warm.
