Corsairs of Varisia

Game Master dain120475

“Corsairs of Varisia” is a homebrew campaign which has low magic; emerging technology in the form of firearms; reavers, swashbucklers, buccaneers, and pirates.

“Corsairs of Varisia” campaign pits the starting party in a emerging town situated between Riddleport and Magnimar.

The town, formerly Roderic’s Cove, had been conquered by pirates from Riddleport, but has been recently liberated from support from the south to stop the advance of Riddleport into their waters.

The town was renamed “Beacon” and the lord of the town is calling on any who wish to make their fortune and become something great; with little to aid them but their wits and steel.

From the large building you see the half-orc step.

He moves to J:21.

He looks at you all with feverish eyes.

”The Father comes for you all! Know this and despair!” he cries out in a desperate voice.

From the opening in the large building something comes moving out.

It is very large, and its eyes gleam with cruel intelligence and it moves to J:19 (So that you know, it’s a “Large Sized” creature) and hisses at you malevolently.

New Battle Map.

Geser looks over that giant serpent and his mind tacks back to the information that Asan had shared with them and the clues that they found from the dead body on the trail south.

Stefan, I'm bumping you up to N:27 as O:27 would have you standing on top of a corpse and that would be too difficult to maintain a Full Defense on.

Two-Kills killed his goblin, but he looks very, very intimidated by the presence of that creature "The Father" - let's see if Taissa can find out why via her roll...

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Knowledge Nature Check:

Taissa - you notice a few things right away.

First, the snake is certainly not native.

It was brought here; it comes from a land far away, a much warmer climate. Someone brought it here for a purpose, clearly - but as for why you'll have to see about later.

Meanwhile, the creature is best described as a Here.

To clarify, the HP is set for almost Maximum - that is 80 at this point.

You know that you can try to run from it through the difficult terrain, but you also know that even though it's speed is slower than yours, it will not be effected by the snow for movement. So what is "Difficult terrain" for you guys to give you all a normal movement of 15 feet per Move Action is actually normal terrain for the Serpent - so it can move 20 feet on a Move Action - it will catch you if it chases you.

You notice something unusual, though - its belly is distended a bit, as if it has eaten recently. Perhaps the Half-Orc fed it something just now to incite it?

Finally, it is definitely an animal, not a magical beast, but it is clearly intent on you all...

Geser looks at the snake, his eyes flicking back to Hack and Polux and he considers what could happen...

Possible Action from Hack and Polux...

He considers what the others will do, but can't come up with an equally good visual at this time...

Geser, I hope you feel better soon. I was in the hospital earlier this week and I had to go on valium for the pain, it's messing with me, too, so I understand how you feel. Of course, you're free to act now, though, if you'd like.

@ALL: Taissa has shared all the information under Dain GM's spoiler re the Father with you for expediency sake.

Constrictor stats

"The Father is a constrictor snake! He will be very hard to take down. We must work together or we will perish."

Taissa drops the lucerne hammer and draws her loaded musket and aims at the giant serpent and shoots.

Ranged Touch Attack with musket, including range penalty: 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (9) + 6 - 2 = 13
Damage, if hits: 1d12 ⇒ 12

The snake moves 20 ft per round and isn't impeded by the difficult terrain and it's bite is at +11, so not good to be bit. We need to keep moving back when we can and draw it forward. Polux use your musket or longbow, if you can.

It takes a full round to reload a musket, so yes, that's what Taissa will be doing next round.

Constrictor's HP now 68/80.

Stefan, I think someone may have picked up your sword, as well as Geser and Suny's weapons. You can wield them, but still at a penalty. Also, whoever is holding the weapons will have to bring them to you.

The half-orc hears you, Stefan, and his eyes narrow.

Hack - you just moved 40 feet through difficult terrain and used a Standard Action via Intimidate. It's difficult to tell if that was successful, but it might have been...

Polux to "hit" Stefan with his sword, if you want to toss it at him, you need a ranged touch attack of DC 10.

Since it's a thrown weapon and it's 40 feet the range increment is standard 10 feet.

Stefan, there really aren't any rules for "catching" things that I know of, so I'll say that you can make a raw Dexterity check (or Reflex Check if you prefers) of DC 15 to catch the weapon in the air as a free action. Or the weapon can hit the ground by your feet and you can pick it up as a Move Action.

Polux, while I'm thinking of it, you probably have Suny and Geser's weapons, too.

Thank you, Geser. It has been hard lately, but it is the job I signed on to do, and I do like to write. For me, this is more of a forum for creative writing that involves an existing format for me to get reactions to my work. So despite my personal issues, it's a pleasure for me to write.

Regarding your check - you guess without rolling that it's a religious symbol of some sort, and it's likely this person is a cleric.

That said, the real question is to discover what the symbol is all about. If you had Knowledge: Religion, you could make a check on it, but Knowledge Skills cannot be used untrained. In other words, you need at least 1 rank in it to use that skill.

It's reasonable inference to assume that Apep may be some sort of divine being; but as to how "real" he is would require an appropriate roll for Religion.

Okay - I think everyone who has acted has acted. I guess that means I'm up. I'll have something up soon, then.

Dain GM, it's a joy for me to indulge in creativity as well, but if I'm tired, anything that's in any way cerebral sucks. I think I tire out my brain before anything else. As for my Perception check, I wasn't focusing on the symbol; I was going off of your description of it from earlier and the things he's done with it as a reason to expect that this "Apep" he's speaking of might actually show up. My Perception roll was to look around and see if I noticed anything approaching.

I feel stupid, but I guess I was skimming when I could over the weekend and must have overlooked it. The snake, Apep...yeah. Okay. Duh.

Geser will look around for something he can use to touch the ankh. Perhaps a cloth from the clothes of one of the dead goblins? He doesn't want to make direct contact with it, but if he can get it away from the half-orc, perhaps he can deter the snake with it.

I'm back for a bit between jobs - commuting to the first job today was awkward with the snow and also construction. Yay...

In any case -

1. Hack, Polux is correct - the half-orc is 50 from you over difficult terrain at J:21. However, the snake is only 20 feet from you - which means you could move 15 feet and hit him, if you wanted (in other words 15 feet puts you adjacent to the snake).

2. Stefan - your total defense is noted. By the way, as I'm reading it now, I do not believe that Crane Style is able to "Deflect" a Combat Action, only a specific attack; but not something like Disarm or Grab - please clarify if you have notes on it either way. Thanks.

3. Geser - I'm assuming that you have at least a bandanna on your person at some point. However, you are 60 feet away from the spellcaster at this time and you have not attempted to move closer. If you want to try to "Disarm" him (A Combat Maneuver) you are welcome to try - but you'd still need to close 60 feet over difficult terrain and you have not yet moved.

At this point we're still waiting for both Suny and Taissa to take their formal moves, as well as for Hack to declare his formal intentions - then it's my turn.

Meanwhile, I'm off to my second job and I'll see you all tonight. Good luck!

Correct, Crane Wing does not work against combat manuevers. However, an attack with the Grab special ability must hit first before a grapple attempt is made, so Crane Wing does work against that. The snake does have the option of just trying to initiate a grapple, but that would provoke an AoO as Grab does not count as Improved Grapple except with the attack that has Grab.

She will remain hovering in the air @ W:20 (bow held in claws), until she can return to Taissa's side and deposit the bow by her feet.

Raw Stealth check to move/fly without drawing attention: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Fly check to hover (DC 15): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19

Not sure what rolls I need to make, if any. Please advise further Dain GM. Daya's strength is 13 (carrying capacity: light load 50 lbs or less) and the comp shortbow only weighs 2 lbs.

That's two move actions this round for Daya : fly and retrieve weapon, if the action is allowable.

Well, based on what Dain has posted in discussion, here's some meta - someone needs to shift their position to L:27 or M:27, so Polux at least gets a chance to charge the snake and flank her also - actually going to L:27, attacking the half-orc, and offering a flanking opportunity to Polux would be great - GO!

EDIT: Ninjaed by Stefan - what about a retcon there Stefan? *hint*hint*

Polux, you can stand next to Stefan or I in K:25 or N:25 and still get flanking because it is a large creature.

Stefan, You have a +2 for flanking with me, don't you?

Round 5, Sickened, Rage: Rd 10/11 (AC: 14), Power Att, Flanking

Hack will continue to lay into the snake from a flanking position with Stefan.

GA Att: 1d20 + 10 - 2 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (10) + 10 - 2 + 2 - 1 = 19
GA Dam: 1d12 + 8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 8 + 4 = 15

@DAIN GM: Major mistake...In my Round 4 attack a few posts above, I forgot to add the +10 to my attack, and only subtracted for Sickened and PA. Please retcon my last post to a 21 Attack Roll. That means that I likely hit for 22 points of damage last round on the snake!

I am confused Hack - how is this possible? As far as I understand, the half-orc is in K:26. If I stand in K:25 yes I can flank the snake, but how do I flank if I am on N:25?

Taking a second look at the map (I am on O:21) - if anyone would have shifted to M:27, I could get flanking and sneak attack, by moving to N:24 (can only move 15' in difficult terrain and attack, I believe).

Then again, I don't think you can shift in difficult terrain so it doesn't really matter I guess...

Seeing the half-orc lurking behind the massive creature, Polx drops the bow and wades in on the snake, drawing his Earthbreaker - "Who wants to live forever anyway?" - he growls, swinging in a wide arc.

Moving to N:24 and attacking the snake - fighting defensively.

Earthbreaker attack: 1d20 + 7 - 4 ⇒ (19) + 7 - 4 = 22
Damage: 2d6 + 9 ⇒ (3, 3) + 9 = 15

Seeing the great serpent slide up to Stefan, Geser and herself Suny simply drops the bow and arrow as she turns, deftly wraps the chains about her fists and wrists in a complicated manner, thence tries to connect said metal to the beasties head.

Att with improvised weapon=>Catch off guard=>Target is flat footed to Suny's attack=> 1d20 + 5 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 5 + 2 - 2 = 10(Hopefully flanking with Stefan and Geser. Though the minus from being sickened sucks)

Dam Roll:1d4 + 1 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + 1 + (5) = 10(+Sneak attack for target being Flat Footed)

Well...not much productive with those dice rolls...
