With a horrific burst the body of the Black rider explodes. Stranding in its place is a huge creature almost treelike in nature, its branches like tentacles and its roots ending in hooves, with a trunk decorated with numerous drooling maws.

Eleric you recognise the creature as a Dark Young of Shub-Niggurath. They have damage reduction except against slashing weapons, they are immune to electricity, fire and poison. They have a frightful presence aura. They have the constrict and trample abilities, some spell like abilities and if they pin a target they can do strength damage.

Need a rules query answered here- does tremor sense remove the mischance for the blindness?

Nope. It allows the creature to know the square you are in but not 'see' you. Blind/tremor-sense work this way, blindsight is effectively seeing with out eyes.

Ortensia blasts the Dark Young with a ray of cold, it gives one final pained scream and that falls dead. As it dies various sparks come off of the equipment and you can see small cracks appearing in the roof of the caverns. Slowly the waters of the lake start to trickle in to the cave.

Creeden disentangles himself from the various tentacles. "Just in the nick of time, there! Let's gather what we can and get back on dry land. I'm curious what we should do with the Effigy, but time to speak of that later."

"So, it seems like the trade has not been completed. If that is right then we can try to use the effigy to get the mace. Then the mace in Caliphas to get the crown and arrest the person responsible for all this chaos."

Ortensia held up the Ravenshead mace. Actually, we already have the mace in hand. Its pretty much a holy relic.And it will continue to be used as such against the Whispering Way. We can return the Effigy to the college. They'll probably pay us a handsome sum for its recovery and the new information we uncovered about it.

She started to stuff the Effigy and the other items of worth into her handy haversack.

We best hurry along. This place isn't architecturally sound enough for is to dawdle. We'll divvy up whatever we found once we're safe. Should we take the brains in jar and that bleached girl?

You can take the bleached girl. Assuming you are taking the submersible back to the surface you would only be able to take one of the brains in jars too.

GM Brains:
Once the group leaves Eleric is pretty sure there is nothing that can be done about the brains without regeneration or wish. So he will seal up the cave and come back when he is powerful enough to solve the problem.

You manage to take the girl and meet back up with Croon who takes you back to the surface. You realise from what you have seen that the majority of the townspeople have at the very least been involved in the fostering although Mayor Greedle and the owner of the manor house were the main instigators.

The villagers that Eleric speak to are very cagey. They seem to know nothing about the abductions. On the cult they are perhaps a little more open although none seem to know it was a secret cult to Dagon. They explain for centuries there has been fostering of children to the neighbours.

The trek from Illmarsh to Caliphas takes several days. You are about a day's ride from Caliphas when the road narrows as it passes between two hillsides topped with skeletal trees looming to the east and west. Just ahead, a stone bridge spans a wide, fast-moving stream with stone sentinels in stag-antlered helms guarding each end. In the middle of the bridge is a horseman dressed in black on a black horse.
