I'm pretty sure no one can make the Kn Local DC 25. Larken has +4 and he is the only one with Kn Local as far as I can see. Is it something I could sub a Gather Info for by asking around later?

male Human Rogue 3 / Fighter 1

KN: Local (1d20+4=7)

Larken has no clue.

Spoiler:
Elisile asks Thorn if Banny would normally be at the mill so early – and if not, why he might have been there when he was killed. Also, who owns the mill? Was Banny friends with, or otherwise connected to, the other victims?

At the temple:

Spoiler:
Vethran's brow furrows as Hudak and Dravite begin to maneuver towards the creature. He quickly raises his hand to stop them. "Hold. I can keep him in place for awhile at least."

Assuming Alwyn keeps it pinned in the corner, cowering, and Dravite and Hudak step back, Vethran will web the thing into the corner.

Don't web it. We should be able to tie it up with no problems, it can't attack, only cower in fear from the cleric. Us handling it doesn't break the effect or allow it to fight back.

Let's be gittin' dis one tied oop good, Hudak.

I'll tie him up with some rope. Use rope (untrained) r17 ...

(edit)if I gotta grapple, r10+3=13.

At the barracks:

Spoiler:
Larken, and pretty much anyone else present with the possible exception of Illes, can tell that Ibor is a lousy liar and is holding something back.

At the temple:

Spoiler:
I'm not convinced that Turning allows you to treat undead as effectively defenceless - that isn't what the description says. However, your Intimidate, given some circumstance bonuses by three guys with big weapons and a mage, is enough to get him to talk. But he isn't amenable to being tied up.

"I don't know where he came from, or who he is. He just attacked us in the barn. The others wanted to know about his offer, and if he had some gold, so maybe we could rob him. But he was too strong, too strong.

"Please, let me go. I must go to the Misgivings, to be with my master." He begins nerously eying the window, which is shuttered but leads to the outside.

DM-

Spoiler:

From the SRD under turning effects and duration-
If they cannot flee, they cower (giving any attack rolls against them a +2 bonus). If you approach within 10 feet of them, however, they overcome being turned and act normally. (You can stand within 10 feet without breaking the turning effect—you just can’t approach them.) You can attack them with ranged attacks (from at least 10 feet away), and others can attack them in any fashion, without breaking the turning effect.
He would only be able to cower while we tie him up, but I'm not sure he could speak until after the effect wears off.

Dravite:

Spoiler:
Actually, I see it the other way round - he can talk, but is not defenceless. From a game perspective, you are effectively asking the Turn effect to be the equivalent, under certain circumstances, of Hold Monster, which seems a little powerful for me. The description says that a turned undead cowers, but doesn't really specify what that means beyond the fact that you get +2 to hit it. I would also probably take it to mean that it would not return an attack, but that it probably could resist an attack (i.e. try and move out the way when someone tries to hit it or, more specifically to this instance, grapple it and tie it up). After all, you get +2 to hit it, not the automatic hit which seems to be what you are implying. And, as a side issue, I don't see cowering as being the same as unable to speak. As is usual with these things, the description in the PHB leaves a little to be desired.

And isn't it nice to talk about rules interpretation without insulting one another? I can't wait for the Pathfinder playtest to end.

Fair enough, different perspective and all. Yeah, they could've added a tagline to define 'cowering', and I also can't wait for PFRPG testing to end. Hopefully the boards will return to normal.

Alwyn briefly turns back to Father Xanthus. "Can this creature be saved? Can his disease be cured, restoring him to the ranks of normal men?"

At the temple:

Spoiler:
Xanthus shakes his head sadly. “I know of no cure. This man is already dead.”

As he speaks, Sevilla makes a break for the window, trying to smash through the shutters and out into the street.

Attacks of opportunity for Hudak and Dravite. You can decide if you have weapons out or if you are trying to grapple and subdue.

At the barracks:

Spoiler:
Thorn twitches and looks guilty. "Well, I didn't think anyone knew. It wasn't a lot of money."

Male Dwarf Ranger/7 XP- 35674

Where be ye thikin' yer goin'! With the Hook, 1d20 8=15 to hit, 1d12 5=17 damage.

At the temple:

Spoiler:
Dravite deals with the situation. He hooks the fleeing ghoul in the back, rips out his spine, and leaves him collapsed on the floor.

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

At the temple:

Spoiler:
"Nice blow, Dravite. I guess we would have had to kill him no matter what. Let's drag the carcass outside and burn it - we can't be too careful with this kind of creature. Also, we need to make sure that nobody else got bit by him. We don't want more ghouls creeping around Sandpoint."

As they dispose of the corpse, Alwyn turns to Xanthus. "Do you have any idea what this 'Misgivings' place it was blabbering about might be? I'm drawing a complete blank."

Male Dwarf Ranger/7 XP- 35674

Dravite takes a moment to mutter something under his breath with his head bowed. DC 7 listen check.

Temple:

Spoiler:
"The Misgivings?" Xanthus thinks for a moment, and then clicks his figers as he recalls. "Yes, I remember now. South of here there is Foxglove Manor. It was deserted for a long time, and had a bad reputation, and the town called it the Misgivings. Lots of rumours about murder and death. Anyway, it is owned by the Foxglove familiy, and Aldern Foxglove came back recently from Magnimar to reclaim the house and take it for his family again.

Barracks:

Spoiler:
"Well, y'see, Banny was skimming off the top of the takings that he gave to Scarnetti, who owns the place. Of course, I never took any of the money for meself, of course," he adds hastily with a worried glance at the glowering Sheriff Hemlock. "But I didn't think Scarnetti knew about it, and it seems a bit much to knock him off like that over it. It was only a bit if pin money.

"He used to say to Katrine that he was saving up so they could run off together - her dad's a bit of a jealous type, don't like anyone messing with his girls. But I think he was stringing her along - I think he hoped to take her for her dad's cash too - least, that's he said to me when he was drunk once."

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

Temple:

Spoiler:
"Well, that was wacky. Looks like we need to sneak around over under and into Foxglove Manor. Maybe we can talk to Aldern again too. We should go compare notes with the other guys who went to the barracks.
Father, I'm sorry we brought such mayhem to your good house."

Barracks:

Spoiler:
Elisile looks to her companions, and the Sheriff. “Scarnetti? He is a member of the town council is he not? I did not much care for him, nor he for us it seemed … however, this seems … excessive for some stolen money. And Illes and Vethran suspect the hand of undead creatures in this.” She looks at the Sheriff. “Sheriff Hemlock, you know the man better than we do … does this seem to be within his character or capabilities? He perhaps has a motive … at least in the case of the one. I wonder if he has any connection to the other victims?”

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

At the temple:

Spoiler:
After the party finishes up at the temple, Alwyn turns to the other party members. "Aldern Foxgolve? He is that... odd fellow we saved from the goblin raiders, isn't he? The one who bought us dinner and seemed to like Larken a lot? And now he hangs out with ghouls? I'm very, very confused now."

At the temple:

Spoiler:
"Ofcourse. It indeed seems your return is timely. Perhaps you should rejoin your friends."

At the barracks:

Spoiler:
"Scanetti's mean as hell - he hated spending money on you guys even though he is probably the richest man in town. But I have seen him in the town council - he would be angry if he knew about Banny taking money that was his, but he would get me to arrest him, not do this."

Time for people to get back together? And.... 100xp each.

Yeah, we're probably at a dead end here, and it sounds like there's been some excitement at the temple...

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

Yeah; I think we're done...

OK - maybe it is time to share.

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

As the party meets up to discuss further actions, Alwyn is mostly confused. "We did learn a couple of things. Firstly, the Skinsaw Man is a ghast, which is a powerful, cunning corpse-eater. That explains the smell. Secondly, these corpse-eaters apparently carry some form of deadly disease that turns you into one of them. That's what happened to the victim they were keeping at the temple - the Skinsaw Man bit him and infected him with the curse of undeath. He never stood a chance - Dravite did him a favour by killing him. Finally, it seems like this Skinsaw fellow hangs out at a place called the Misgivings. This is the kicker - the Misgivings is the mansion owned by the Foxglove family, and Aldern Foxglove recently moved back in in order to restore the place. Remember Aldern Foxglove? While he seemed a little weird, he didn't seem like the kind to associate with flesh-eating monsters. As I said, I am confused."

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

what type does seem to hang out with flesh-eating ghouls?

"Well, shoot. I mean, we can't just kick the guy's door in. I think we'll get b~@%+ed at for that.
Damn. We could get drawn-and-quartered.
We gotta sneak in or something. I don't think talking to Aldern's a good idea. If he's in on it, it's not like he's going to let us come over there, eat supper, then kill all his ghoul friends. If he ain't in on it, he'll probably come to us for help anyway's. We're bad motherf*@%ers. So let's sneak in."

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11
Hudak wrote:

The Ed Gein wannabe demographic, I guess... Admittedly, it is a small group, but its, um, enthusiasm makes up for it.

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

At this juncture, let's all agree as player characters NOT to burn down Foxglove manor by throwing big kegs of whale oil into multiple windows, followed by numerous fire spells, then shoot anyone or anything that comes out the front door with arrows and whatnot.

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

Awww... You're no fun.

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

backup plan?

OK, so what's the plan?

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

Let's all meet up at Ameiko's bar, and compare notes.

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

"Do we really need some sort of excuse to head out to the misgivings after all the ghoul's yammering about 'joining his master at the Misgivings'? That is, in my considered opinion, complete nonsense." Alwyn catches himself before embarking on another rant about Chelaxian legal practices. "However, let's assume we need an actionable complaint. We are still deputies, right? Let's see if we can dig up some old dirt on this Foxglove fellow. Perhaps he hasn't paid the poll tax lately? Perhaps someone saw someone resembling some wanted criminal close by his manor? It would only be natural that some deputies stopped by, right? We'd be doing the young Foxglove a favour, even, protecting him from that nasty Skinsaw Man."

"Or would this be too transparent?"

'Ow boot dis. A ghoulie be saying he must be returnin' ta de Misgivings an' 'is master. That thar be good enough by me own reckonin'.

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

"It would be good enough for me too. And I'd love to kick the door in and kick some skulls in. I'd love to. It's honest. It makes Shoanti sense. Dwarf sense.
And I saw what Magnimar sense was back there. Do this the wrong way, and those gits back there fetter us up, throw their little judgment party, and take us in the back room for some strangling. It's like this skinsaw man wins no matter what, seems to me.
This can be done, but we need to be cool about it. It's all I'm saying."

Alwyn Agnarrson wrote:

"As deputies," says the sheriff, who just happens to be at the Rusty Dragon too, "You are entitled to investigate and act on your own initiative. And undead have no legal rights and consorting with or creating them is a capital offence, in case you were wondering. And, er, burning the house down would be arson. That's a capital offence. In fact, most things are a capital offence in the Code of Magnimar."

Male Human Marshal 4

Ugh, I think everyone is healthy again, and when I find the bastard who got me playing World of Warcraft, I will give him some infected bedding...

Anyway, I never had much to contribute to the investigation, accept the +3 that everyone gets on Wis based checks around me when we are not fighting, at which point I switch it to +3 damage when flanking on my first turn...

OK, so what are you doing?

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

Let's head over to the Manor then. How far is it?

Probably a hour's ride, south west of town.

HP 78/67, AC 26, T 14, FF 23, CMD 21 Performance 37/37 CHA DAMAGE: 5

Ok, let's do it! Poor Vethran! He's gonna get the death penalty if he burns the place down!

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

I'm ready to roll whenever; let's go so we get there at sundown. A ghoulhouse should be attacked at night, for maximum ambiance. I ain't scared. I'm might Hudak. Let's roll these punks. This being cautious crap--it's for the birds. Fortune favors the bold.

Well, if you set off now, the sun should be starting to go down about the time you get there. Time is of the essence....

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

I'm ready. I'll go it alone, if need be.

Spoiler:
I'm just kidding.
