"Lots, many more than you!" blurts the bandit.

Sense Motive, DC 10:

Spoiler:
You get the impression he's not being evasive, more that counting about ten is not his strong point.

"We camp next to some ruins. No one has ever challenged us there - it's too far for an army and too hard to find. The desert there is just black grit and if you don't know the way you get lost."

Male Human Wizard 4 HP: 18/31 AC: 11 Treasure XP

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16

"Then you'll make the perfect guide and stay alive a few days longer."

The bandit gulps.

Even intimidated by Jareen - what a wuss.

Male Human Wizard 4 HP: 18/31 AC: 11 Treasure XP

I'm sure stranger things must have happened in the desert... maybe?

Sense Motive: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2

Djal, unable to determine what to make of the bandit's words, snarls at the man: "What about defenses!? Traps?!"

"The ruins are haunted," blurts the bandit.

Rollin' rollin' rollin. Keep them dogies rollin' ....

"What do you mean, haunted!? Real haunted? Or just what peasants claim to sound interesting?" shouts Djal at the bandit, poking him again in the ribs with the blunt end of his guisarme.

You are a peasant, in case you haven't noticed.

"If you go into the ruins after dark, you don't come back. You are never seen again."

Female Human Percept +10, Sense Motive +3, Init +5 // HP 27/27 : AC 16 FF 13 T 16 : F +4 R +6 W +9 // Power Points 10/10

Keep them dogies, rolling, rawhide!

Djal is, but he doesn't see himself so :)

Puzzled by what he hears, Djal asks: "If the ruins are so dangerous, then why do the bandits camp nearby? Don't the ghosts there ruin their soul?!"

Rawhide!

Arakan rolls his eyes, letting Djal take over the questioning after the Mul made his comment about the decision of mercy or not belonging to them. However, he sees them getting lost going down the janx hole, and he has to reel it back. "Look, 'Tribesman'," he spit the word at Djal with disdain for his comment about it being their decision, always winning friends like he does, "You're wasting your time talking about haunted ruins. Are these spirits coming out here and taking your people? Are they going to defend the raiders if we attack, even though no one has come back out of the ruins? No, not likely. Let's stick to the important questions."

He begins, holding up a finger to count them off as he goes. "What does the layout of the camp look like? How many entrances are there, and where are they? How many men are on watch at any time, on how many shifts? When are you guys due to return? Are there any passwords we need to give to be allowed entry? Oh, and let's not forget, where are they holding the prisoners?"

"Well, its got a wall, and a gate. There's a few guys on watch all the time, uh, you know, when they tell us to. I think they're expecting us back tomorrow. We don't have passwords and stuff - we just know what each other looks like. We've got a big cage for the prisoners in the middle, but we let them out to do stuff in the camp during the day - you know, cooking, cleaning, if we need a shag, that sort of thing."

Djal at first clenches his teeth in reaction to Arakan's dismissive comments, but the bandit's answer gives him something else to grit his teeth about: "What do you mean, a shag?" he snarls, the sharp edge of his guisarme now dancing close to the bandit's eyes.

"It's pretty obvious what he means. Let's stay focused."

Djal blushes at Morthak's words. What did he expect? His jaw clenched, he takes a step back, controlling the urge to make that bandit scream for a real reason.

"Well, I don't think he's talking about carpets...."

"Er, anything else," cringes the bandit.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Maybe they just like dancing?

Perfectly safe for work, or anywhere else, in case you are wondering... Probably one really for the discussion page, but hey!

Is there? Anything else, I mean? Otherwise, we can move on.

"Sounds like we need to take this one along for the ride, and either hit while the slaves will be caged to make manoeuvring easier, or when they wont to make their life harder and hopefully kick start some resistance inside. What do you think Arakan? You are our strategist, if this fight was anything to go by they will fall quite easily."

Male Half-Elf Mindvivisectionist 3/Archaeologist 1 (AC: 16 [T: 13 /F: 14]; HP: 28/28; F+5 (+2 vs Poison), R+8, W+4; Init: +2; Perc: +7 [Low-light vision])

Arakan nods at the old man, "Sounds about right. We will surely take this one with us, to show us the way. We need to try and strike when the prisoners are caged, to prevent them from getting in our way or being used as human shields. We need to return tomorrow, so as to not arouse any suspicion, and ideally under the cover of darkness to help conceal our true selves." He turns back to the man they are questioning. "The front gate, which way does it face? Toward or away from the rising sun, or neither?"

The man thinks. "The sun rising."

Male Half-Elf Mindvivisectionist 3/Archaeologist 1 (AC: 16 [T: 13 /F: 14]; HP: 28/28; F+5 (+2 vs Poison), R+8, W+4; Init: +2; Perc: +7 [Low-light vision])

Is that the same direction we will be coming from?

"If that is the case, it may be best if we plan to arrive at sunrise. With the sun at our backs and in their eyes, it would go a long way toward getting us inside. Or at least get the gate open before they are aware of our deception."

Male Human Wizard 4 HP: 18/31 AC: 11 Treasure XP

"I agree."

The place is actually west of your position. Might be worth pointing out that you have a skilled illusionist with you for disguise purposes.

Male Half-Elf Mindvivisectionist 3/Archaeologist 1 (AC: 16 [T: 13 /F: 14]; HP: 28/28; F+5 (+2 vs Poison), R+8, W+4; Init: +2; Perc: +7 [Low-light vision])

No, we don't have a skilled illusionist, we have Jare... oh. I mean, yes, that is an option. ;)

Male Human Wizard 4 HP: 18/31 AC: 11 Treasure XP

:D

Invisibility and Alter Self still available....

"We need to go soon enough, if we are to arrive at sunrise. Let's grab the fallen's clothes to serve as disguise. Who'll be in the cage? Jaryx? He'll never look like a bandit..." offers Djal, his guisarme pointed at the bandit's throat.

Male Human Wizard 4 HP: 18/31 AC: 11 Treasure XP

Quietly, to the group. "I can make one of our number invisible for a short time, a few minutes, or until they attack. I can also make myself look like one of these bandits, again, for a few minutes. It's not much but it should help us convince them."

Male Dwarf Psychic Warrior 4 :: 37/40 hp :: AC21, Fort +8, Ref +3, Will +5

"I will not go in the cage," Morthak declares emphatically. "But would be happy to go invisible."

Jaryx in the cage makes sense. And his ranged attacks would still work, as far as I know.

Male Half-Elf Mindvivisectionist 3/Archaeologist 1 (AC: 16 [T: 13 /F: 14]; HP: 28/28; F+5 (+2 vs Poison), R+8, W+4; Init: +2; Perc: +7 [Low-light vision])

Arakan calms the others, "Considering the facing, and the direction we will have to travel, it actually means we need to arrive at sunset, not sunrise. That gives us time to gather ourselves and our things. Maybe, we can better prepare after a night's rest. Some of us can disguise well enough without magic. We should utilize that and the gear of the fallen as best we can." That said, he looks around, and asks, "Morthak and Djal, can I have a word with you guys off to the side?"

Djal and Morthak, and Aubs too I guess:
Once he gets the men off to the side, he clarifies. "The prisoner we have. He will far outlive his usefulness once we have the place in sight. I would hate for him to foil our plans and throw the whole thing into chaos as soon as we get into earshot. Are either of you two willing to mete out justice before he becomes a liability? I know some of the others may balk at the question."

What cage? The cage I was referring to is in the centre of the bandit camp.

Ah! My bad...

Listening to Arakan, Djal clenches his jaw and nods.

Back in human appearance, Grea returns with her herd of giant beetles. After wrangling them through the gate she looks at Jaryx, then jerks her head toward Djal. She spins on her heel and walks toward the ex-gladiator.

"Djal, is all well here?"

Enough herding.

Jaryx makes sure the gate is set into place and follows her.

Jaryx could still come in as a captured prisoner, walking amidst the kanks. Having the defeated group's mounts should also help with the deception.

Arakan & Djal:
"He is already living on borrowed time. I will reclaim the debt he owes."

Djal extends a hand to stop Grea; he was ok, but in a conversation.

OK, hit me with your plan.

Djal and Morthak:
Arakan nods, knowing he would have no trouble with Morthak doing it, but was uncertain about the Mul. "No sooner than when we have the fort in sight. Once we are in visual range, anytime before he can call out a warning is good."

Assuming we can get there in one day? If we leave in the next morning, or if we sleep now in 8 hours. Planning to arrive at sunset.

"Jareen, if you have a chance to sleep and recover yourself, how many people can you offer magical disguises? I do not intend to use it, I will dress as the leader, and do the talking, as is the standard. We need to look like we are as many as they were, maybe one or two less, if we take one of the half-giants prisoner. We also need to feign like we are returning with supplies. There are eight of us from the attack. Th'Kal will need magic to hide him, as Jaryx and Cahel might also. If we can bundle some of them to look like returned supplies, that may help as well. Do not use too much of your resources, as we may need some of it for the fight once inside, like the webbing."

cahel isn't opposed to going in the cage, but would prefer to go in wild-shaped as a small or medium animal.

Male Half-Elf Mindvivisectionist 3/Archaeologist 1 (AC: 16 [T: 13 /F: 14]; HP: 28/28; F+5 (+2 vs Poison), R+8, W+4; Init: +2; Perc: +7 [Low-light vision])

There isn't a cage. The cage mentioned was where the prisoners at the raider camp are held when not in use. Any 'prisoner' with us would just be 'bound'. The only animals we're likely to have are Kank and Inix, both of which are large as mounts.

Male Human Wizard 4 HP: 18/31 AC: 11 Treasure XP

"Four, but that would remove my most offensive capabilities from the game. I can alter people, or make them invisible. We should decide which. In both cases the effect lasts only a few minutes."

"I can use the bandits' equipment and look like one of them." offers Djal, after his discussion with Morthak and Arakan. He is eager to leave and rescue his sister, but he also dreads the reunion, for he doesn't know what to say to her, given what he's just heard about the way she was likely treated. How could he have been so stupid? How could the village slowly slip back in slavery?

Is there a "wild animal" that Cahel could pose as and slip into the camp, not necessarily as part of the returning party?

Jaryx has no such available trickery. However, by RAW, I don't think anything but mental actions required, but I envision him using hand motions to trigger his attack, so if his hands were bound in front of him, I think he should still be able to use his attack. That or waiting outside is all I can think of for Jaryx.

Male Half-Elf Mindvivisectionist 3/Archaeologist 1 (AC: 16 [T: 13 /F: 14]; HP: 28/28; F+5 (+2 vs Poison), R+8, W+4; Init: +2; Perc: +7 [Low-light vision])

Hearing enough, Arakan decides he'll make the call. "Here's how it's going to work. They came at us eight strong. Jareen, Djal, Grea, Morthak, and I will use their gear as a disguise. Those of us who pull it off better will be closer to the front. Jareen, you use your magic on Cahel and Th'Kal for disguises when we get close enough for it to last at least through the gate. Jaryx will be a prisoner, and a reason both for the delay and being down a man. As for delay, we will plan to arrive at sunset, or dusk if we don't make it in time. This puts the sun at our backs and aids in our disguises. Cahel, the only animal I can see of use would be a Kes'trekel, so you can perch somewhere inside, but most people don't exactly let the vicious carrion birds hang around unmolested."

Not sure when Th'Kal will be leaving us or how, so I'm still including him in the plans, as Arakan would not plan for him to be far from his side.

HP 27/29; AC 16 / T11 / F15; Fort +6, Ref +3, Will +9; Perc +11 Half-giant map Druid (Saurian Shaman) 4

"Yes. Dont want to be eaten either," the half-giant says, out of ideas.

I was planning for Th'Kal to take his leave more or less now, as the party is big enough without an NPC.

"Brrr'k. I stay here and look after clutch in village," buzzes Th'Kal.
