Map.

The very pale green is the ground. It is reasonably free of impediments and you can move normally. The darker green is undergrowth - it's difficult terrain. The dark grey is the side of the cliff, the slightly lighter grey is the masonry structures projecting from it - namely the entrance to the temple and the separate tower. The lines around the frontage represent the steps - they aren't very steep and don't affect movement. T1, T2 and T3 are the tree monsters. The brown blobs are trees which haven't animated (so far) - they are, as you might expect, blocking terrain and can grant cover and so on.

Please place yourselves. You will be somewhere on the non-difficult terrain, and the trees animate when someone walks level with T2.

Initiatives:
T1 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (18) - 2 = 16

Gil. Surprise round - single actions only.

"One of the challenges for the devout, I presume?"

The elven swashbuckler will move forward, staying out of the trees' reach. P24, please, or the spot to Janosz' right in case I read the map wrong.

Gelb draws his short sword and remains in place.

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

I'm firing at T2. Attack roll 11+23+1(PBS)=AC 35, damage 6+3+1(PBS)=10+6 fire+2 electrical.

Two of the undead trees lumber (GEDDIT!) up to smash the living intruders.

T1 charges Gil, T3 charges Nev.

Before I act I want to figure out if tree = vulnerable to fire in this case.
If I rolled high enough to work out any other vulnerability or immunity that would be sweet as well.
Kn Arcana: 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (9) + 22 = 31 If they are constructs.
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (16) + 21 = 37 If they are animated by a spell.
Kn Religion: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (6) + 15 = 21 If they are somehow undead.

Try Knowledge (Nature).

HPs: 96 / 96, APs: 11/8 Effects: Karnnathi Wizard (Universalist) 12 / Cataclysm Mage 1

Ezreal quickly assesses the battlefield and rather than move in putting himself between two of the trees, jogs to the back of the line and prepares to test the hide of the lone guardian.

"I suspect they have a way to bypass these guardians, considering they would be a pain to replace every time someone visits. Damned if I have a clue what it might be."

Out of my wheelhouse.
Move to N36.
Still on surprise round, so that's all.

Nev

"You're overthinking stuff, Ez. These guys are undead trees and are basically walking kindling. Light 'em up!"

Sweet.

Male Kalashtar Psychic Warrior 6 / War Mind 5

Free Action: activate Chain of Personal Superiority and Chain of Defensive Posture (+2 insight to STR, CON, and AC)
Standard Action: Manifest call weapon, gain a +1 Called Greatsword (costing me 5 PP) (Auto-succeed on concentration check to manifest defensively)
Move: none
Free Action: 5ft step to P36
Free Action: "Gelb, flank!"

Surprise round - just a single action. Can someone look up whether you can use free actions (I'm guessing you can) as well in the surprise round.

If some but not all of the combatants are aware of their opponents, a surprise round happens before regular rounds begin. In initiative order (highest to lowest), combatants who started the battle aware of their opponents each take a standard or move action during the surprise round. You can also take free actions during the surprise round. If no one or everyone is surprised, no surprise round occurs.

5' step is a free action if no other movements are made, so it should still be a free action, however i could understand if you disallowed it as it is almost a move in addition to my standard.

My understanding is that you are allowed a 5' step as part of a full-attack action, not allowed a 5' step as a free action irrespective. But thanks for the rest.

The other undead tree monster crashes up to crush Janosz.

Third attempt to post from phone since wifi went stupid on me. Grr...

Keeping a wary eye on the tree that just clubbed him and its splintermate, the elf attempts to cast a spell under cover of drawing his rapier. Using cloaked casting to increase DC by 1.

Concentration DC 21: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (6) + 16 = 22

As the spell completes, there is a momentary shimmer around the two trees on either side of Janosz and Gil.

Slow, Will DC 19 + 1

Spell Penetration, if needed: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 10 + 2 = 14

79/79 hp, 0 nonlethal; Effects: ; Perception +16, vs traps +20; Guise: Non-descript male gambler

Forgot in the rush to post before I lost the link:

Bluff check for Cloaked Casting: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (10) + 23 = 33

Spell complete, the elf draws his punching dagger and steps back five feet straight down to P25, please

FYI as relates to 5' steps

Gelb throws a rude gesture with his free hand at Nevharath before moving to flank. “I’m not your servant, loudmouth!”

As he moves he draws one of his wands from his bandolier, turns, aims and yells, “Burn!” at the animated tree.

Move: move to V33.
Acrobatic check to avoid AoO if necessary: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (3) + 18 = 21 vs. CMD +10 (moving at full speed) of animated tree.
Standard: activate wand of scorching ray. Skill Mastery makes this an auto-check.
Scorching ray (ranged touch): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14. Damage: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 2, 6) = 15 (fire).

Janosz

Interestingly, it's not a free action but a miscellaneous action - which possibly doesn't take us much further, but also probably means you can't do it in a surprise round. Eh, 3e is so ambiguous - 4e for the win!

79/79 hp, 0 nonlethal; Effects: ; Perception +16, vs traps +20; Guise: Non-descript male gambler

In the list of action types in the Core Rulebook, the 5-foot step is listed as "No Action" rather than "Free Action" and it is specifically called out as not being allowed in conjunction with certain full-round actions. Which, as usual, leaves it completely up to the GM.

I'm glad I don't play 3e. ;-)

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

"Burn, twiggy! BURN!!!" Janosz steps underneath the tree's grasping branch-hand and lets loose.

It missed me. I take a 5' step to P25 before pincushioning T2. I'm using Point Blank Shot, Manyshot and Rapid Shot. Also, as I have the Clustered Shots feat, all the damage gets totaled before DR is subtracted - i.e. all the shots essentially counts as a single mega-arrow.
Attack 1 (w/Manyshot): 11+19+1(PBS)=AC 31, damage 2d8+6+2(BPS)=19+4 fire + 3 electrical
Attack 2: 10+19+1=AC 30, damage 1d8+3+1=9+4 fire + 4 electrical
Attack 3: 11+14+1=AC 26, damage 1d8+3+1=8+5 fire + 2 electrical
Attack 4: 9+9+1=AC 19, damage 1d8+3+1=7+3 fire + 2 electrical

Runzyl.

The Valenar takes a moment to appreciate the immense size of the guardians before carefully dashing inside the behemoth's defenses and delivering a powerful slash at it's roots.

Spring Attacking T2. Move to M25 to strike: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (3) + 21 = 24 to hit, dealing 1d6 + 11 ⇒ (6) + 11 = 17 damage. Then move to M28 after the attack.

OK, that's two AoOs - one on Gelb and one on Janosz (sadly, their reach is 15').

Gelb: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (16) + 17 = 33 to hit, damage 2d6 + 10 ⇒ (1, 6) + 10 = 17
Janosz: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (17) + 17 = 34 to hit, damage 2d6 + 10 ⇒ (6, 5) + 10 = 21

Massive branches catch Gelb and Janosz heavy blows. But both manage to score hits on their arborial attackers, Gelb scorching a line across the trunk of one and Janosz peppering his with hissing, fiery arrows. Runzyl moves up smoothly and with his crescent blade slices at the roots holding up Janosz's foe. With a groan of snapping wood it is felled.

T2 down.

The other two trees hammer at Gil and Nevharath.

T1 on Gil: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (6) + 17 = 23 to hit, damage 2d6 + 10 ⇒ (2, 5) + 10 = 17
T3 on Nev: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (17) + 17 = 34 to hit, damage 2d6 + 10 ⇒ (4, 4) + 10 = 18

Map updated.

Bastards.

HPs: 96 / 96, APs: 11/8 Effects: Karnnathi Wizard (Universalist) 12 / Cataclysm Mage 1

Crackling electricity builds up Ezreal's arm and arcs out to the tree in Nevhareth's face.

Storm Bolt: 6d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 1) = 13

I'm one square off from my last move on the map. Should have been N36. 5' back to M36, after the electricity.

79/79 hp, 0 nonlethal; Effects: ; Perception +16, vs traps +20; Guise: Non-descript male gambler

Likely irrelevant, but did the slow affect T1? Did T3 jump up in initiative? I thought he was last.

T2 was last. And your Slow didn't have an effect as they were already staggered, I'm afraid.
