Male Human

Saltmarsh is a small port town almost 4,000 people big, the majority being human though it has its fair share of other races. It is really nothing more then a resupply port where some ships get goods when on long trips, it gains most of its income as a fishing town

Godelina and Edan traveled into town about a week ago at the bequest of the church Iomedae, who claimed that there was something strange going on in Saltmarsh and they needed someone who was not local to investigate and stir things up to find out what was actually going on. They are currently staying at the Temple of Iomedae This impressive cathedral towers over the neighboring buildings, and indeed it might be the tallest structure in the town of Saltmarsh. It certainly presents one of the more impressive landmarks. The white stone walls of the cathedral rise nearly 100 feet into the air, and the large dome of red
and orange metal atop the square structure adds another 50 feet to its height. The radiant golden symbol of Iomedae adorns the walls of the structure, proclaiming its allegiance proudly and unmistakably. Yet despite its grandiose appearance, the building seems run down and even a bit dirty.

Ushari was dropped off at the docks after being kicked off the ship she was working on about two weeks ago. She found a job at a local bar known as The Lizard's Boat, popular among the middle class locals and travelers alike, and has been acting as a barmaid there ever since. The proprietor of the Lizard’s Boat is Kailee Restinan, a one-time elven ranger who lost her left hand to an angry wyvern in the nearby Dreadwood several years ago, Her animal companion, a monitor lizard named Sticktongue, serves as a mascot and bouncer for the tavern. Keeping things quiet and the men in line. Ushari has run into Godelina and Edan a number of times at the in and because they are close to each others age a friendship is beginning to blossom between them.

Ramar has just rolled into town after hearing a rumor that their may be some sort of cult activity going on by listening to rumors on the road, when he approached Westgate he saw that the road was flanked by 2 40' tall towers with a walkway between them and a large iron gate that is closed each night to keep the city safe. After talking to Vera Orrenti, the leader of the guards at Westgate, and being charged a 5cp "entry tax" since he was not a citizen he was allowed entry into the city and pointed towards The Lizard's Boat as a good place to hear rumors and learn about what is going around town.

Male Human

An intricate sign built to resemble a sailing ship that has caught on fire hangs above the main entrance to The Lizard's Boat. A half-dozen small lizards perch atop the sign. The lizards have learned that the tiny continual flames that appear to burn the ship’s rigging attract the best moths. The locals consider the lizards good luck and often toss them insects or bits of meat to eat as they enter the tavern.

Ushari is currently working, Godelina and Edan are talking and laughing at one of the tables outside the Inn watching the lizards that sit on the sign eating the moths that fly too near the continual flames while waiting for Ushari to get off work.

Ramar has just entered the city at the gate, it takes him about 10 minutes to reach The Lizards Boat.

Edan was smiling, his sketchbook open in front of him as he casually but carefully sketched whatever his mind was idling on at the moment, a simple clay tankard at his right elbow. Out of his armor, he was a rather normal looking man, though his face told of his only recent arrival into adulthood. His vestments were carefully replaced in his room at the church, opting for the comfortable garb of commoners, in this weather. Despite his appearance, there was still a certain something that made him stand out, but perhaps it was the person opposite him at the table.

"..Maybe", he conceded to Godelina, continuing the conversation. "I'm still pretty certain that most of them", he said with a nod towards the patrons in the inn that evening, most of them male, "will be faking hangovers, all for the sake of your attention." A couple of deft strokes, and he gave her a teasing smile. "I can tell by the look of disappointment on their faces when I show up to tend to them."

Ushari sighs and leans against the bar , trying to catch her breath. Being a barmaid was hard, all the men simply refused to leave her alone, always pestering her for refills, and also giving her those looks. Every time one of those sailor types looked at her, she could not help but think about him, and feeling a sense of dread. Although her bruises her nearly completely healed, her heart would take much longer.

Seeing her friends Edan and Goldelina at their accustomed table, always brightened her day, and she gives them a smile, which rarely crosses her face, nowadays. Kailee noticed her resting and motioned for her to get back to work, so she approaches their table, and says to Edan, "Good morning, I hope your day went well, I just wish it weren't quite so busy this evening. So, can I get you two anything?"

He smiled at Ushari as she approached, the hand holding the stick of charcoal going up to brush dark brown strands from out of his face and incidentally leaving a bit of a smudge on his forehead. There were a couple others on his face as well, one on the side of his nose, and another on the bottom of his chin.

It was just as likely he had no idea, either. "You look tired", he observed with an understanding look and a glance back towards Kailee, hoping he was not being too obvious.

The idle sketching in the smallish sketchbook that Edan has seems to be that of a landscape over an armored shoulder, though there are not many details to it, just enough to give the general idea of the image so far. "If there's any tea on, I'd love some, but you look like I ought to ask you random questions about the menu to give you a minute or so to rest." His smile took on a conspiratorial tinge before he sobered up, though he could not quite manage "passably" innocent, glancing across the table to Godelina.

Ushari returns his smile, "I'm sorry, did I say it was morning? I get so confused at times, I meant to say Good Evening." She laughs lightly. "No, I appreciate the offer, but I don't want Kailee to give me any more grief." Although Kailee was indeed a tough taskmaster, she also was fair and kind to her employees, a rare trait to be found. "Let me get you both some tea, and I will see what the specials are now."

Godelina smiled bach at Edan as he mentioned these men who tried to get her attention. She knew that she was attractive, due to the celestial blood her hair was like that of the purest gold and many people had given her looks that made her feel uncomfortable. Edan had at times given her these looks when he thought she wasn't looking, but she knew and didn't mind too much as she knew him and trusted him.
"Mayhaps you should inform them that I am a paladin to the Inheritor and if they attempt to groap me I will be forced to snap their wrist like a twig." she smiled as she wasn't one for violence, buy didn't want these men to think that she was just some cheap thrill they could have their way with. After all, she wasn't a cleric to Calistia.

Seeing their young female friend she smiles to her, but could sense she was a troubled spirit. Call it women's intuition but she had a feeling that the girl was disturbed, yet she did not persue this as she could tell Ushari needed some time alone.
"Mayhaps just us two girls can talk together, but after your shift if you wish." she smiles comfortingly towards her. "I would be afraid too. Being able to escape from such a terrorfying creature with only a missing hand she was very lucky or a formiddable fighter." turns to Edan and smiles at his work. He was talented and appeared to have a deep interest in drawing and reading. She loved watching him draw as he appeared to be in his element. She kept her eyes open suspeciously on the many town's people due to the strange goings on here and casts detect evil as her spell-like ability to see if anyone's alignment shows up as evil trying to do this subtlely so that she can make sure no one catches on.

Good banter guys, just waiting on Ramar to make an appearance, hopefully by this afternoon, then we can advance the story a bit

Your casting of detect evil does not have anyone showing up as evil

After a long journey and the nerve of a "gate fee", Ramar is ready for a good rest and some food. As he walks to the inn the guards recommended, he continues to remind himself that he is here for a reason and should not let his guard down.

As he finds the establishment, he can't help but stop and laugh. Lizards on the sign and alive no less. This should be interesting.

Walking into the tavern he finds an empty seat with his back to the wall and a good view of the entrance and exits. Okay, if someone comes in the front then I can put them to sleep or make them bleed. While everyone is wondering what happened, I can slip out the back. If they come in the back, then vice versa. If they come through both ways.....

Ramars train of thought is disrupted as the serving girl comes up to him. "Excuse me madam. I would like a pot of hot tea and would inquire as to what is on the menu today. Also, is there a local report or news board?"

Turning back to Edan after making sure to look around the entire room, checking that there is evil or evil presence nearby, even looking up as she wonders if there are any staying in the rooms that might be evil. She trained with this ability and was told she would be able to sense the aura through walls. Once she's satisfied with looking around she sighs and turns back to Edan.

"No evil characters here. If we were able to find someone then we would have a lead as to why we're here, not to mention hunt them down and bring them to justice." she rungs her fingers through her short hair, sighing as he finds another dead end, but as she was taught she must continue and then destroy whatever evil is around. "What is it you are drawing, Edan?" he asks with a curious look on her face since they were sat oposite she was looking at it upside down.

He looked up at Godelina after inspecting a line that he had just made, and gave her a small smile after a moment. Edan sometimes forgot how driven she was when it came to her calling. Maybe she even dreamed of delivering justice to evildoers, saving cities, and being heralded a hero. After he had gotten to know her as he had, he realized that many of the stories of Paladins were not entirely accurate, but they were close. Serving as a cleric was not really any pressure, it was what he wanted to do, but he could not help but wonder if being a paladin was any different.

"It's just a sketch", he replied to her question, turning the page around so she could see. "Nothing special." If he had to be honest with himself, the thought of being a Paladin was kind of scary. "It was just a picture in my head that I thought would look nice. "

The little sketchbook of his was a scant handful of loose pages between two thin, bound pieces of toughened hide, that tied with a piece of twine. Edan had found that he loved to sketch when he had nothing pressing to do. It was something enjoyable to him.

Ushari walks over to the man and notices he is uncomfortable for some reason. She decides to put him at ease, and gives him a smile. "By all means sir, and you don't need to call me Ma'am, Ushari is fine. Here is our special list, the trout our chef prepared is to die for! I will bring you some tea, and if you are looking for gossip in town, the inkeep Kailee, knows a lot of what is happening here."

Godelina had smiled as he explained this, though it was obvious that she did wonder for a bit exactly what this image in his head was. For a moment she thought perhaps a divine sign, but she dissmissed the idea, yet kept it as a possibility. Iomedae and all the Gods worked in mysterious ways. She continued to watch over the room and looked to where Ushari went. This man appeared to be new in town. Perhaps he knew of the goings on or maybe he was a simple traveller. Godelina didn't see herself as that powerful of a Paladin to just walk up and question suspects, so she waited Ushari's return to ask her if this man talked to her about anything.

"You are most generous, Ushari. I will have the trout. Would you ask Kailee if she would join me for a cup of tea?" Ramar continues to keep an eye on the crowd.

Ushari moves off to fetch the gentlemans order. When she sees Kailee, she motions privately to her, "There is a gentleman who wants to take a pulse of the town, would you care to talk to him?" She points out Ramar to her. Once the order is placed, she returns to the outdoor table where Godelina and Edan were waiting. She says to them, "That gentlman there seems at unease, and he is really watching for something, or someone. He also wanted to find out what is going on in town. I wonder what he is up to."

"Hmm...I do not know..." Godelina concentraits as he looks over at him wonderingly "He entered when I had my used my powers to scan for evil and he did not show up, however if he were a cleric for a evil deity and a powerful one he would be able to hide his dark aura." she then turns to Edan with a serious look on her face. "What do you think we should do, Edan? Approch this man? We don't even know what strange goings on are happening do we?" her hand moved to the blade's handle, wrapping her fingers around it carefully as she wanted to dispense of the evil there. The state of Iomedae's temple disgusted her. Did people here just not care?

Edan frowned slightly at Godelina's question, and looked uncertain. He knew little about magics, though it was probably possible that powerful magic could hide itself. Divine magics were something else, at least, and even then, it was possible that it could be managed. He shook his head in negation, however. "No, we don't know what is going on here yet, but we will find out soon. Though if he is a powerful cleric, and willing to sit in the town openly like this, we might be the ones in trouble." He did not know much about magic, when it came to it, and that was something he decided to fix.

"I think the man may have just arrived, 'Lina." Edan turned his head to get a better look at the man. "Remember how we looked when we arrived? All of our bags and stuff in our hands before we got a room? He's got the same look." He took a second to look again, tracking down a thought. "Ragathiel", he said rather cryptically. "It's the sword. He'd be a cleric of Ragathiel. I don't think he is, though", he concluded. "He doesn't look as strong as someone who regularly uses a sword like that."

Godelina relaxed as he said this and nodded.

"I guess you are right, I'm sorry." she sighed heavily shaking her head. "Being up here is the first time I've ever seen the outside world. Years of strict devotion and suspecting people." she has to admit, it took a bit of time before she trusted Ushari as much as she does now. She decided to bring up a different topic and smiled towards Edan. "I liked how you shortened my name. I think it sounds sweet." as she said this she grinned and looked back at his picture that he was drawing, curious about what it might look like when finished.

"'Lina, that is a pretty name. I think he doesn't apear to be a threat, in fact he seemed pretty nice when I talked to him. I am sure he will be getting a place to stay here, so maybe we can all meet him together. I mean, using magic doesn't always tell you what is in a man's heart. I mean...Gerold...I never would have thought..." Ushari feels the tears start to flow again, and she hurriedly leaves their table to tend to Ramar's order.

He was grateful for the less-than-full light of the evening. It let him hide the blush Godelina's compliment brought, though the bashful smile was something else. At least she was looking down when it happened, so he did not have to deal with that awkward moment. It was still on his face when he looked up at Ushari, though it changed to a more good-natured one that fell off as he saw the tears in her eyes, concerned.

He liked Ushari. She was definitely a friend, though they had only met a week ago. He did not know much about her, but part of his judgement was based on Godelina. If she had accepted her, then he could do no less. He sent a questioning look to Godelina, to see if she knew what that was about, then looked back to Ushari, as she retreated. A glance was spared to the common room of the inn, where he could say that he had seen many of these faces since he had been here, but knew little.

Edan has seen this happen to Ushari before, and realizes she was still carrying the scars of her actions on her heart. she is embarrassed to show it in public, and he can tell it really has affected her self esteem.

Heh, with a roll like that you barely even notice Kailee walk up to you

@Ramar An attractive elvish woman approaches you and sits at your table with your trout and tea after sliding your plate over to you she asks
"What can I do for you handsome?"

You notice her lizard eying you hungrily

As he begins to eat, he nods to the lizard saying, "Cute pet." Taking a bite, he continues, "I'm new to the area and I was told that you were the person to see about hearing the local news. Could I trouble you for some information on the local happenings?"

"Hahahah!" Her beautiful laughter echos through the bar area and everyone stops for a moment to look at her, you notice some of the men measuring you up, some of them with curiosity and others with jelousy. "I am hardly the expert on local affairs but I would be glad to tell you what I know, what exactly are you looking for?"

She waves her hand at Ushari, beckoning her over.

Male Human

Almost as soon as Edan is done with his sketch a rather cute young woman, with reddish hair and a button nose, who appeared to be watching him from across the street wanders over and glances at what he drew over his shoulder.

She is almost uncomfortably close and you can feel her breath on your ear Edan, "Oh!" she gasps "how beautiful! Could I perhaps convince you to part with that? I will give you a silver and a half for it? Pleaaaase?" She bats her eyelashes at you prettily

Ushari sees Kailee waving her over, and after delivering the last round of drinks approaches the table where Kailee and Ramar are seated. "Yes, Kailee?"

Male Human Psion(telepath) 2

Smiling pleasently at Kailee, "Some general comings and goings? What's the local flavor like? Any places that I should avoid? Where could I find some honest work? Any libraries worth seeing? What temples are about?"
diplomacy for gather info, bluff to try and hide any alternative motive at trying to find out about local cults, and sense motive on any lies: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 111d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 221d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

Edan was glad that he was not in his armor or vestments at this point in time, though the surprise at having someone as cute as she was, as close as she was to him kept him from controlling his blush. His face reddened slightly and was momentarily speechless, though his mouth at least attempted a word before he had to compose himself and try again, finding a bit more success this time. "Um, sure?" He had turned to look at the girl, which put their faces uncomfortably close, unable to keep himself from glancing at her lips.

He mentally cheered himself on as managed to pick up the sheet he had been working on without any awkward fumbling, setting it in front of him as he tore himself away from looking at her face to sign his work, no more than a few elegant lines in Celestial in the corner, picking it up and carefully offering it to her. Edan really hoped he was not staring at her lips, but he probably was, because that was all he could really see. "Uh, here you are." He should probably look her in the eyes, as was proper, but that was not much better. Was it hot out here?

"Well there are many rumors floating around town, mostly idle fancy I assume, I have been here many years and have never seen anything to be too worried about. As for places to avoid? Humm let me think, Perhaps the jail Haha! or the slaughter house, I hear the stink is terrible. I am sure there are many places that you could go to find jobs, try some of the other inns around town perhaps or even the guild halls? As for libraries some of the Churches have a number of books, the richer families have their own personal libraries on their own estates but I doubt that they will allow you access. There are a few temples about, the cathedral of Iomedae, a temple where you can get healing if need be, The cathedral of Gorum, more of a fighting ring then a temple, a temple to Desna god of travel and luck, A shrine to Gozreh, I suppose that counts no? and a temple to Nethys god of magic. Anything else you wish to know while you have my undivided attention?" she says with a wink

Then she turns to Ushari and says "you've been a dear, why don't you get off work early and spend some time with your friends, you look like you can use it"

Male Human Psion(telepath) 2

Enjoying the wink, "This close to Chelix and there are no temples of Asmodeus or Hellknights about? Can't say I'm upset to hear it." Pausing at the serving girl, he nods toward her, "Who are her friends? Anyone of interest?"

Male Human

As soon as Edan hands the girl the sketch she drops the silver and 6 copper onto the table next to him and gushes, "THANK you sooooo much! My friends will be so jealous that I found you first, you are just too cute! And the way you signed your name is gorgeous!" She gives you a quick peck on the cheek before she runs off with the sketch you drew not even giving you a chance to say anything to her. All you can think about for a second is her absolutely stunning sea green eyes.

"oh so you like the young ones do you?" she teases "No one of note really, she is just a young girl that washed up here a few weeks ago looking for work. Her friends appear to be associated with the Cathedral of Iomedae, apparently here because of "strange goings on" or some such it all seems a mite silly to me, sending kids so young on such an errand"

Male Human Psion(telepath) 2

"yeah, children are often thrust into things before their time. Is that them over there? Perhaps, I should introduce myself? Thank you for your time madam." Kissing her hand in a slight bow, "I am forever in your debt."

Walking over to the people Kailee described, Ramar stops and offers a slight bow. "You do not know me but my name is Ramar Mordain. Ms. Restinan stated that you are agents of the Cathedral of Iomedae. May I have a seat?" Assuming that they agree, "I understand that you are in town investigating 'strange goings on.' I know a thing or two about strange things. Perhaps I could lend a hand."

Godelina uses all of her composure not to scowl at the woman, moving her hand hand to her blade hilt and reminding herself of the teachings of The Inheritor and that striking down those who have commited no evil was a great sin. No matter how much she felt like wrapping her fingers around that wreched little neck of the girl and squeese she held back and looked over at Edan, noticing his awkwardness and blush.

What does he see in her? Such a cheap whore too. of course she didn't understand why she was thinking these things and brushed them aside, more interested in recent developments.

Godelina looks to this new comer and though she remained suspecious, she hid it well and concentraited on him and what he was saying.

"Yes...there has been a recent decline in woreshippers. Not a small one, but one that is indeed very large. I don't know what has brought this on, but I hope we can get to the bottom of this." she looks at him with interest as he mentions strange things. Knowledge Religion to see if any of the temples in the area could possibly be evil or related to an evil way:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26

Once she returns, she sees Ramar already talking to her friends, and Ramar. She quickly moves to join them. "Guess who gave me the night off!"

"That is good news." she smiled sincerily as she was told this and then leans in to whisper to her "Maybe us girls should go have a talk. I'm worried about that little outburst earlier." she says this in a kind voice, wanting to learn more and perhaps help their friend whatever way they can. Ramar seems to be telling the truth, you can't detect any strangeness in his body language anyway, and who wouldn't want the help of a man with a sword like that?

Of the religions that have temples of some sort in the city this is what you know; again anyone can read spoilers, I really want you guys to get a feel for the town, it is rather large and populated, there is a lot to do here. If you want I could make a post about all the people and places of note in the town in the ooc thread (there is about 57 places or so, I think)

Spoiler:
Gorum CN god of strength, battle, weapons, his temple is little more then an over glorified arena for gladiatorial matches where only people that worship him can fight, no magic is allowed during the fight.
Desna CG goddess of dreams, stars, travelers, luck, the sailors pay homage to her since they use the stars to navigate and travel often, road weary travelers also visit the temple that is really an inn that allows people to stay for free on their first visit but any visits after they must make a donation to help offset costs.
Gozreh N god of nature, weather, the sea, his "temple" is less of a temple and more of a shrine in Frog park, a goodly sized area of marshy ground inside the walls of the city that is tended to by druids of Gozreh.
Nethys N god of magic, originally this temple was the underfunded library of the town untill a wizard came and bought it, tearing down the original library he built a rather ostentatious temple to Nethys, now it serves as a school for mages and a place where people of the town to come to buy magic items.

Ahh, shame about Gorum. I was hoping to perhaps win woreshippers that way, but doesn't seem to be possible, though would've been awesome to go toe-to-toe with an evil doer and use smite on them. Can't wait to try it.

Edan was more surprised that they were described as "agents" of the Church, not so sure that was a title he wanted. It was true that they were sent by the Church, but they would have come to help, should they have been nearby, anyway. He left it to Godelina to be more suspicious than he was, instead thinking of how this newcomer to the town could best be of help to them. Still, while altruism may exist, he had to keep in mind that this traveler may have his own goals while he was here, and despite offering his help, he may have a purpose of his own.

While thinking, he picked up the money from the purchase of his sketch and listened to the conversation between Ramar and Godelina. He supposed, if he wanted to discover the reason why the Church would send them here, they would have to start at the churches and work backwards, maybe? It would make sense for them, though their affiliation was well-known, it seemed. Ushari and Ramar may have a better chance checking, probably. He and Godelina would probably be better off asking about --or around-- the town.

It was a plan. Or, well, the beginning of a plan. It was something more than they had before. He gave a smile to Ushari, and refocused his drifting attention on the conversation.

Ushari looks over at the beautiful woman, and feels a sense of companionship from her. She wasn't sure if it was a paladin trait or not, Godelina being the first of the holy warriors she has ever encountered. Whenever she looked at her, she could not but feel a little envious, since she had it all together. She would never let a man have his way with her, if she didn't want to. Edan is the perfect partner for her. She is so lucky to know them both.

I...I would like that, 'Lina. I think I really need an ear to listen to me. It's so hard being here, without any one there to help you out. it seems like I have always been on my own."

Ushari looks over atthe strange gentleman, and feels intimidated by him, but she replies, "Well, I have not been here that long, so I really couldn't tell you if there is anything strange or not. I am not religious like that, but I do think it strange as well. I don't think it is as easy to change religions, like changing your clothes."
