Lantern Lodge

Just trying to gauge interest in running this classic 1e adventure under the new rules. No character creation guidelines have been established nor is there a closing date. This is solely an interest check that might be used for recruitment if there is enough interest.

Dark Archive

Would we be making our own characters or playing the pregen Companions?

interested.

Lantern Lodge

If I were to do this you would be making your own characters.

I am interested...

I'd like to play in a 5E game.

Lantern Lodge

Okay, I'll go ahead and open up recruitment in this thread.

27 point buy.
No CE or CN alignments.
No Dragonborn (personal preference plus too much like draconians), No Drow...Minotaur's are considered legal for play (see unearthed arcana article)

Begin at 3rd level.
Max HP at first, then 1/2 +1 on every subsequent Hit Die.

Max Gold per class plus 500 (from now on referred to as steel pieces)

No Divine Magic...yet. Though I do need someone who is willing to take at least 1 level of Cleric/Druid/Paladin or possibly favored soul. (Favored soul will be able to choose to take the sorcerer or cleric spell list)

Need to do an inventory of optional rules:
flanking provides advantage.
grittier option (short rest =8hrs, long rest =7 days)

more to come later tonight.

Do you know yet if you would be using any of the elemental stuff? I am mainly just interested in the spells.

This actually brings up a relevant point: are you planning to use maps for combat? If so, by what means? This can make a difference as to whether joining is logistically feasible for me.

Jiggy, if you are having trouble using a map for some reason, I duobt that it will be hard to find at least one person to move your peice for you.

Lantern Lodge

Elemental spells are fine, races are not.

I am not to good with maps, I will post maps so you have a visual but will not be using them tactically. As long as you say you move into a flanking position, it's all cool with me.

Ah, good, that works best for me. :)

So, any other variant rules we should know about? And what's the deadline for character creation?

Dark Archive

Cool. I will probably submit a Kagonesti elf for the "Goldmoon/bringer of the old time religion" position. Might start off as a bard, but I'll need to check the multiclassing rules when I get home. Alternatively, would you be open to the character starting as a cleric but handwaving any spellcasting or other divine powers as coming from the Blue Crystal Staff (or some similar MacGuffin)?

Lantern Lodge

I plan to start next friday, I would like to have characters done by wednesday.

That brings up an interesting point. I am going to roll randomly as to who has the blue crystal staff, so it may very well start in the hands of a raistlin, tanis, flint or tasselhoff.

Liberty's Edge

Would love to play a minotaur version of Tanis (aka. the ranger)...can someone link the unearthed arcana article for me (I cannot seem to find it on the Wizard's website)
thanks

Lantern Lodge

Optional rules:
Factions are in play (Towers of High Sorcerery, Knights of Solmania), etc.
Healer's Kit Dependency (pg 266.)
Slow Natural Healing (pg 267)
Monsters will have side initiative per type. (I will roll initiative for the group of bugbears, and the group of draconians not every monster individually unless they are named such as fewmaster toede)
Speed factor for initiative (pg 271)
All action options are open for play
Lingering injuries
Massive Damage
as well as the aforementioned flanking and grittier rests

If you can't tell I like grittier games.

Lantern Lodge

Funny enough Daniel Stewart, Tanis was a fighter and Riverwind was the ranger.

Unearthed Arcana: Waterborne Adventures

Should be noted that the mariner fighting style, swashbuckler and stormborne origin, spell-less ranger are legal

Any fan created material such as that from ENworld is at my discretion.

Liberty's Edge

Ah..that's right! How could I have forgotten....well I will try to get something together asap!!

Grand Lodge RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

...Are these variants in the PHB? Or do I need the DMG in order to play this game?

Grand Lodge

Hey, DaWay! I would definitely like to play! Can I use half-orc for a half-ogre fighter? I would be aiming to play the Sturm role (LG).

I have a backstory all ready...

Lantern Lodge

They are in the DMG, and I will make sure everyone is aware of the rules. Upon further examination I will omit the healer's kit dependency and slow natural healing.

The others are smaller lighter weapons are quicker, spells slow you down.
you can disarm and overrun and other fun stuff.
Watch out for crits and death saves
if you get hit with more than half your total hit points make a con save or be dropped to death saves.

Aeshuura you may use the half-orc or a goliath.

Grand Lodge

I think half-orc would work better, but yeah, sounds good. How much are you slowing natural healing? Are we starting at 1st level?

Urgo backstory:
Urgo grunted as he pulled at his step-father's plow. He did this without complaint, even as the man lashed him to spur him on. Urgo allowed his mind to wander as he moved, picking up the pace. He thought of the times that his best friend (likely a fighter type PC, likely even one that becomes the Knight of Solamnia) taught him the arts of swordplay, sharing the day's lesson from old man Bertram.

Bertram was an old Knight that settled in the small town of Solace. For some reason, he rarely talked of the old ways, which was fine enough for the people of Solace. Bertram was quiet, and it took <Fighter-type PC> months of begging and proving his dedication, before the old knight taught him even the basics of swordplay. Every day, after hours of grueling practice, <Fighter-type PC> came to Urgo and taught him, effectively giving himself a tremendous sparring partner and reinforcing his own training.

"Urgo, put the plow away, then go and pick up firewood from old man Cutter," the old farmer barked as he threw the leather straps over the handles of the plow and headed back to the house.

Urgo moved quickly, happy to be done with his chores and hefted the plow over his shoulder, wincing only slightly at the pain of the raw flesh on his back. He knew that his step-father was unhappy with his situation, and he took it out on him. Urgo was happy to receive the punishment as long as it did not find its way to his mother.

Urgo's mother used to be a Lady, married to a rather prominent Knight of Solamnia, whose keep rested high in the Vingaard mountain range. It took years until the young half-ogre was able to convince his mother to share the story of his birth. With hesitation, she began slowly...

---

It was winter, she was happy, it was her husband's Oathday. She had put on her best dress, and was headed downstairs to the meeting hall, where their friends were to have gathered. She found her husband pacing back and forth near the front doors. He was clearly concerned. "Dearest, what is it?"

He opened his mouth, but didn't have the chance to speak. The doors exploded inward... and soon the place was overrun with ogres! She remembers screaming, but her husband's guards were no match the leader of the savages! Soon the beasts had slaughtered the guards... she felt one of them grab her and pin her against the wall as her husband squared off with the leader. She could barely breathe. The ogres formed a ring around the knight and their leader, cheering and hooting.

The fight wasn't long, maybe a minute. The savage captain toyed with her husband, battering him with his giant mace. By the count of 30 heartbeats, the knight had one arm hanging limply at his side. He couldn't effectively use his greatsword, which dragged uselessly at his side. Then, after a few jeers, goading him into swinging wildly, the ogre crushed her husband's ribs, leaving him in a heap on the floor. That was when he signaled the beast that held her...

The leader ravaged her again and again in front of her dying husband...

---

She woke up to chaos, shining symbols of the kingfisher, swords, and roses, moving around her. She says the rest was a blur, and Urgo did not blame her. He felt horrible for making her relive the event, but he needed to know. Urgo asked why she kept him, why hold on to something that would just bring her so much pain? All his mother told him was that she and her husband had been trying to have a child for so long... now the gods laughed at her, blessing her with a child, but not with her husband. She could not explain it, perhaps it was to spite the gods, perhaps she felt that with the proper nurturing, she could raise him to be a good and honest man. She kept him well groomed, and clean, taught him humility, she had done a good job.

---

Urgo knew the rest of the story, she traveled across the plains and ended up in Solace. There she met the man that would be his step-father. The same man, that treated him like an animal... Someday, he swore, someday he would know more of the man that should have been his father. The man that died in the castle that day. He looked on, he had to get firewood from Old Man Cutter. Maybe he would see his friends this day!

Lantern Lodge

3rd level and I decided not to use slow natural healing

Are we actually playing the Companions or are we just filling their roles?

I'd like to play a Raistlin character...Wizard Neutrally aligned.

Grand Lodge

What I usually do for my 5e games is that I will use normal healing, but crits might leave wounds that take a while to recover from (such as disadvantage or reduced movement for certain wounds.)

Lantern Lodge

No you are not playing the Companions you are playing your own characters. People have taken to filling roles but is not a requirement.

Grand Lodge

Actually, I think I would be more of the Caramon-type role. He will not be smart, but he will be a great weapon fighter...

I know we won't be required to take one of the "Companion's" role, but I list it for the benefit of other PCs and yourself to figure out what role we might fill in the campaign...

How are we doing hp? Roll or the AL style (max hp at 1st and 1/2+1 for each subsequent lvl)?

EDIT: Sorry, wasn't paying attention! Got it! :)

Lantern Lodge

I have made a decision on the house rules, after running a 5e pbp for that past month+ with no rule changes I have decided the only houserules are going to be:

Flanking provides Advantage
Factions
Enemy Side Initiative
Speed Factor for Initiative (this may go, if it becomes to cumbersome to gameplay it will be eliminated)
All Attack Options

If you need clarification for character creation

No Genasi, Drow, Dragonborn, Deep Gnomes
No CN or CE characters, I'm iffy on NE
All classes open (Including Elemental Evil and most Unearthed Arcana)
27 point buy or standard array.
you may either take background/class equipment or max steel for class + 500 steel
Max Hp at first then 1/2+1 HD per level
Start at 3rd

Simple enough.

Factions

Is this something that's in the PHB? What do we need to know?

Quote:
Enemy Side Initiative

Sounds like this is something for you to handle on your side of things, yes?

Quote:
Speed Factor for Initiative (this may go, if it becomes to cumbersome to gameplay it will be eliminated)

What do I actually need to know about this?

Quote:
All Attack Options

I don't know what this means.

I'll try and get a character up sometime tonight! I'm thinking a human or half elf Warlock....

Lantern Lodge

Factions (will provide benefits and allies to call upon) tracking renown is going to be your only concern
The Knights of Solmania (much like the Order of the Guantlet or the Silver Crusade)
Allies of the Forestmaster (Emerald Enclave or hippy tree huggers)
Seekers (those who search for evidence of the gods though has devolved to coercien for local rule)
Towers of High Sorcerery

Speed factor for initiative adds in a modifier to initiatve based on your weapons

spellcasting (- spell level)
Heavy melee -2
light or finesse melee +2
melee two handed -2
ranged, loading weapons -5

Size modifiers to initiative
tiny +5
small +2
medium +0
large -2
huge -5
gargantuan -8

Attack options
Climb onto a bigger creature
disarm
mark
overrun
shove aside
tumble

Grand Lodge

Jiggy, by attack options, I think he means that we can sunder, disarm, etc.

Speed factor, I think means that weapons with the light property might get a bonus to initiative and those with the heavy property may get a penalty to initiative.

Factions, I am hoping will include Knights of Solamnia, Seekers, Elven nations, or something of the like...

I am excited about this...

Boss, I am almost done with my character, will post up the character sheet soon.

EDIT: Ninja'd by da Boss!

I don't like Warlock for Krynn....doesn't have the right vibe imo.

Gonna make a Gnomish Transmuter Wizard...with the life quest to create a "Master Transmuter's Stone". (it doesn't exist but gnomes need a hobby).

Still a bit work in progress but rough stats for tribeof1's submission are in this alias.

Question: There's really nothing for me to spend that extra 500 steel on other than healing potions and alchemist's fire. Would it be possible to get some minor item like a driftglobe instead? Not looking for power so much as something more interesting than a giant bag of coins.

Lantern Lodge

I'd rather you didn't.

Would love to play a cleric

Grand Lodge

Actually, I like warlock-wizard multiclass for Raistlin. The pact, though would be Fistandandelion! :p

Grand Lodge

What about the magic item that all Wizards get for passing the test? Are you going to allow them to have something? Not that I am going to play a wizard or anything...

Lantern Lodge

No, that will be represented by their arcane focus.

Grand Lodge

Ok, because I was thinking if someone gets to start off with the Staff of Magius or something of the like that would be pretty awesome! :)

Alright, Jiggy here with some good old fashioned elven fighter-mage goodness. I don't have much to go on with the factions, so perhaps you could recommend one?

My HP/AC/Saves/etc are in the "Classes/Levels" field so that they'll display under my name in gameplay posts for easy reference.

For initiative adjustments, is that based on what you have at the ready? Currently I'm just displaying my base initiative, in case it will vary. Also, if my AC seems low it's because that's without mage armor up. The value in parentheses is if I have my shield equipped. Let me know if anything needs changing, thanks!

EDIT: Oh, and since the goal is old-school, I modeled the character after one of the elf PC options in Order of the Griffon, an AD&D licensed game on the old TurboGrafx 16 console from back in the day. I even made sure I took her starting spell as one of mine. ;)

Lantern Lodge

Well, as a wizard you are required to have been a member of the Towers of High Sorcery, (I can't tell you the color of your robes because I don't see your alignment listed anywehre) Perhaps you defected after that, or are currently unaligned.

Grand Lodge RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

Towers of High Sorcery it is, then. I forgot about my alignment, since that's not really emphasized in 5E. Let's go with NG.

Also, what do I have to work with in regards to backstory? I don't know what sort of setting this is, really.

Lantern Lodge

You will have white robes to represent your graduation from the Towers.

I believe it is known as the age of despair. The gods have either disappeared or turn their backs on the people.

The game assumes that the characters are all companions, who are meeting again after their company parted ways five years ago. So backstory, I would need to know how you know the rest of the characters and what you have been doing for the past five years. With you Jiggy, its probably been undergoing the tests of High Sorcery.

EDIT: Question, not a criticism, but why fighter/wizard instead of eldritch knight path for the fighter?

Lantern Lodge

List of applications (for a condensed location, since the deadline is approaching tomorrow).

Jiggy: Sage High Elf Fighter/Wizard

Tribeof1: Hermit Wood Elf Bard

DaWay wrote:

Just to get a slightly different casting/fighting ratio. 5E's version of Eldritch Knight is a full-on fighter who lightly dabbles in magic. I wanted something a little closer to an even split, so I'm adding wizard levels. It gets me faster (and less restricted) spellcasting progression, at the cost of getting my stat boosts and second attack much later.

Also, I've been curious to see how the multiclassing system plays out in practice. :)

Re: backstory, it'd be hard to know how I know the other players without knowing who's in... If I'm selected, I'm sure I can come up with something. :)

Grand Lodge

I am having problems. I want to go with a background that reflects the simple start as a "workhorse" on a farm and was going to go with folk hero, however, with the prejudice that will come with my heritage Rustic Hospitality did not seem to fit. Is there anything that we could work on to replace it with?
