I'm excited, too!
I'd wager the contest's second round will be archetypes again. After all, it's a great measure of design chops, writing and taste, so I think it shows a lot of readiness to design RPG elements.
Good luck to everyone this year, and if you're wavering on whether to enter, make sure you do! Not everyone can succeed in this contest, but anyone can!

I wonder if the Round 2 challenge could be a hybrid class (or archetype of one of the ten) a la the upcoming Advanced Class Guide playtest...
The more I think about the ACG the more I think it will have an impact even on the first round. Ok, so people may not be designing items that interact specifically with the new Hybrids (coz that's either a no-no or divinely inspired depending on the item) but the new mechanics and approaches will bleed into the consciousness of the designers, and what better way to show you have chops than to be all over the shiny new content?
And again, design a Hybrid is my prediction for round 2.

Hybrid would be a cool round, but with the book still in testing mode, I doubt it will be this year. I'm not sure which classes are left to combine though (at least for those of us who remember the paladin being a cleric hybrid of fighter (we called them sub-classes then :))
Oh I remember Curaigh, I remember when the Paladin and Ranger were subclasses of the Fighter, and then that way crazy Unearthed Arcana rode in and all of a sudden Paladins were now a subclass of a new class called the Cavalier. Awesome days. Dust now.
As for which classes there are left to combine, have a look HERE...
I'd say there at least a few left...

I think Curaigh has nailed it.
They wont ask us to do something which isn't generally available as to do so makes the voters job so much more difficult.
Basically - They would need to give the designers access to the current ACG so we can follow their lead and they would need to give it to the masses so they can determine how well they have done in order to vote in an informed manner.
Also, there would be the danger that the public would view such a round as indicative of the way the ACG will finally work, perhaps a perception they don't want set in stone in the public mind just yet.
So I also don't think it will be an ACG round as there is too little public information for voters or contestants at present.
I think it will be archetypes again. The first time archetypes was tried, the judges had a nightmare round, the second time (last year), the archetypes were more solid (we all had the prior years examples of what not to do to learn from).
I think what they might do though is go back further and have a villain / major NPC type of round, maybe with a mythic twist. That or have another archetype round as that provides a good ratio mixture of fluff and crunch.

I would run through the winning items and the public voting commentary from last years threads - it will most likely give you a big insight on how your "last years idea" may have fared.
I would also write a couple of items or three this week to get back into the swing, you might even create an item better than your idea from last year. Blazing 9 thread is still going, so grab it while you can.
But do that first suggestion first, right now, sit down, mug in one hand, tablet /laptop in the other and get to it. I think it will be a massive help now we are public vote dependent on every round right from the beginning.

Ah, I can feel it in the air, like magic taking shape in the winter wind...
But, there is so much stuff going on in my life this year that even though I know what item I wanna do, I haven't had the time to actually write it down... Yeah, I'm drowning with university work this time around. That said, when the announcement comes my heart will probably skip a beat and I'll try my best to write something in time for this year too.
I'm glad to see some familiar faces around here as well, how have you guys been doing for the last 9 months?, have you been good kids for Santa?

Hi everyone. Just wanted to drop in and let you know that for various reasons I won't be able to serve as a main judge this year for RPG Superstar. I am very bummed to miss only my second year of this great contest as a judge of the contest. Of course, as always, I will stay plugged in to this great community and encourage and support the contestants and help in any way I can.
There are many reasons why I love Superstar. First, its run by Paizo and the people who own and run Paizo have become my friends over the years. I think they are great people and they deserve my support. Second, I believe Paizo and Pathfinder to be the true successor to AD&D, a game I have played since I was 10 years old, and its creativity and outlet has been a wonderful hobby of mine for those many years. Third, I had so many great people help me when I was a new designer starting out with my d20 company that I think it only fair to return the favor and help new designers trying to break into the field. Fourth, I enjoy working with my fellow Superstar judges--Erik and Wolfgang in year 1, through Sean and Neil and Ryan as the years went by. I I have truly learned more from my time judging this contest then you likely learned from me. And fifth, all the great people I have met from this contest, not the least of whom include Neil and Jason and Boomer and some of the guys who now comprise Legendary Games. It is a great contest filled with great people from top to bottom and it has been my pleasure to be associated with it. I am proud of my work as a judge of the contest and hope to be able to resume that role, time permitting, in the future.
So, without further ado...Go Team! If anyone is considering not entering, please reconsider. Though I wont be able to judge your submissions, believe me when I tell you that you will find it to be a useful and improving process.
Good luck to all the contestants. And, between me you and the fence post, I am pulling for a few of the forum regulars who havent previously advanced to make it into the top 32 this year!

I almost made a bet with myself worth a million hours in the gym that you would be a judge this time Clark, sorry to hear the news, inspired by your post though. Thanks for being a pillar of support and advice for so many of us every year, and I bet you'll find a way to do so this year as well (we know you can't fight the urge~).

Hey, Clark! I really love reading your comments and analysis, so it goes without saying that I'll miss your presence this year! I hope you go back to judging the contest in the future.
But, to be 100% honest, the most shocking thing about your post was the fact that you've changed your avatar picture... what's going on??? :P

I check a couple times a day. It will be a couple times an hour when RPGSSOCD starts. With the announcement that Tuesday's Blogs will be devoted to the APC play test until it closes, I think we won't hear anything for a month yet.
or maybe in ...just a couple of weeks...

(Well, another way would be to submit a cellphone made of filigree.)
I'm thinking of going mad this year - my filigree has filigree with some embossing on top!
I like your phone though, was it made by that crazy goblin duo...

So this will be my first year entering. How does the first round of voting work? Is there anything I should be aware of going into it all?
There will likely be some changes based on last year's feedback, but the first round goes to the Paizo public at large. A voter goes to the voting page and is presented with two items and picks what they consider to be the better of the two. Then they get two more to choose from, and then two more, etc. At the end of the voting, the judges take the top rated items and review them, choosing the Top 32 from that lot.
