Alternate beginner adventure?

Beginner Box

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to convince one of my friends, who is not well acquainted with RPGs, to play with a new group we're getting together. I fully believe that she will enjoy playing, but she has told me she'd like to give it one shot before she commits.

The problem is, I know it's not going to go very well if the first adventure is a dungeon crawl. I'm fighting against all the stigmas of RPGing and I would like to emphasize that it's not all fighting goblins and dragons. I would like to emphasize the non-combat parts. The puzzles, NPCs, creativity, and story elements above the fighting.

Does anyone know of a beginner scenario (I currently have the beginner box, bestiary box, Rise of the Runelords pawns, and RotRL AP to work with) that would better serve my goal?

-if personality is any help, I'd imagine she would ultimately (when she gets to create a character) be a Gnome bard/druid multiclasser.-

What about the Swallowtail Festival, the first encounter of Rise of the Runelords? It's at a public streetfair with lots of opportunities for NPC interaction and features goblins as villains, which have Beginner Box stats.

If you don't have the adventure, make it up yourself: Small-town celebration crashed by goblins. Make up some NPCs for the party to meet and like, then let them save their new friends from the monsters.

Well I'm not yet creative enough to write my own adventures, so I'm trying to use pre-gens. I guess my hope is that it's at least somewhat self-contained, in that she gather info and puts it to enough use in one session that she feels like she accomplished something important, but that maybe there is just enough left undiscovered that she's curious...

Oh, she like's Buffy too if that gives any ideas.

While I haven't actually read it yet, this is an adventure written for Beginner Box rules featuring PCs who are students at a Hogwarts-like school for adventurers. There's at least one sequel. And these adventures are written for Beginner Box rules, as well.

I would agree with Joana on giving the Swallowtail festival a go. Lots of NPC opportunities, there is also a bit of mystery there to solve:

ROTRL:
Such as Father Tobyn's body going missing, why did the Goblins attack etc

Or just as an idea you could possibly think about running We Be Goblins. I have ran this a few times and personally find it to be quite beginner friendly. It is a one shot adventure where the players are Goblins. It is different enough that your friend might want to come back. It has premade goblins included and the best part is that the adventure is free.

The only down side is that the adventure does use core rules.

We Be Goblins

The "First Steps" adventures include a lot of in-town stuff like investigation, roleplaying, clever use of props and items, etc.

Thanks a lot guys! I think Fangs from the Past is EXACTLY what I'm looking for!

If it isn't too late, I want to mention Murder's Mark. It is a first level adventure built around a traveling circus.

We Be Goblins is exactly the first thing that I thought of - it certainly sounds like a fun way to start a one-shot beginner adventure to me :)

The 3.5 adventure Into the Wilds was fun, and converting to the BB should be somewhat easy.
