For the second round, given the opportunity, Vandryl will charge (if he can reach the goblins) otherwise he will move 20 ft (standard move) and throw a second javelin.

If charging: attack roll is 5+4(melee)+2(charge)=11 (he must be blinded by his hatred)

If attacking with a javelin (post move): 5+3=8 (yeah, I expect that misses).

Oh well, at least I rolled well for the first round!

Vandryl, seeing the hated goblinoids, will throw a javelin of his own. Perhaps his keen-edged hatred of goblinoids guides his hand, for his aim is excellent, though whether his throw will edge past the goblin's armor remains yet to be seen. Ranged attack 17+3=20 (18 if they're more than the first 30 ft range increment away). Damage is 5+3=8, provided he hits.

Vandryl takes heed of the warning and readies his flail... all the while trying (perhaps even successfully, this will probably be the first and ONLY time... Move Silently: 18+2(dex)-4(armor check penalty)=16) to be quiet in his armor.

Vandryl suggests that Telvar holds the light source.... Telvar can invoke as long as one hand is free, while Vandryl needs both hands for his flail.

if initiative is needed, Vandryl rolls an 11+2=13

Vandryl looks to see if charging is a viable action. If it is, he will charge as his action, attacking with his flail. To hit: 16+4+2(charge)+2(DM assigned bonus)=24. Damage roll for the charge is 5+4(1.5*str bonus)=9

If charging is NOT a viable option, Vandryl will take a standard move to get closer to the beast and possibly flank it next round. He shifts his grip on his flail to hold it in one hand while drawing a javelin (free action during move). As his attack he will throw the javelin into combat. The above To hit roll translates to: 16+3+2-4(throwing into combat)=17. Damage roll for the javelin is 2+3(str)=5.

Vandryl stops and readies his flail, trying to remain as quiet as possible (Move Silently: 4+2-4=2.... yeah here's hoping that's a hell of a distance modifier!). He does not advance, but instead assumes a defensive stance (total defensive posture adds +4 to AC = current AC of 20, assuming we are not flat-footed since we're fully aware of the beastie, and this is actually our action on an unaware foe). If this turns to violence (which given my move silently role seems likely), my initiative role is 18+2 (dex bonus) = 20. He looks over to Telvar quickly, listening for Telvar's response to Harlynd's question.

Why evening? It's early morning and even after running the errands, a 15 mile walk should not take more than 6 hours... that would be (by my account) mid-afternoon with some hours left before dark.

If, indeed we know the location, then extreme haste is not an issue. My training is in infantry fighting, and I will keep my own feet on the ground.

I think we will take you up on the offer for the pack-mule however, as it will help us in transporting the goods back here upon our return.

I will proceed as I described in yesterday's entry, leaving my 2 gp share for the pony with Valic while I continue on to procure some more substantial rations and visit the temple. Upon my return, I expect that we will depart for the location of the goblin lair.

EDIT: conscious of Harlynd's wish to depart quickly, Vandryl will make more haste about his errands. He still visits the temple, but doesn't take the time to go inside.

I can carry quite a lot and still keep moving, but how much supplys are we going to be bringing back, perhaps we should invest in a pack-mule if there is going to be a large load to bring back. IF the party wants to buy one, I will chip in one fifth of the price of a mule and pack saddle.

Aye Valic, that is a reasonable plan. I will also contribute towards a pack mule.

Vandryl listens to whatever information the Chicane guild agent can impart. He then suggests, barring information that would allow us to start elsewhere, that we prepare to head out to the site of the spice caravan's attack... stopping to get any supplies we may need. He suggests that the group meet in about an hour's time and be ready for travel. In order to track them, time is of the essense (Harlynd, Rurik... am I wrong in this?) so we should proceed as quickly as possible.

*assuming no better start location for the search is forthcoming*

We will proceed, honorable merchant, with this task for you with all due haste. Where can we find you upon our return?

Vandryl indicates to his companions that he is getting some supplies for the journey. In addition to procuring some better rations (one can only survive on trail rations for so long), he stops at Pious Way and stares for a few moments at the marble temple of Pholtus. Knowing he will shortly be among the vile goblin folk once more he enters and to pray for the strength to remain pure and steadfast against his enemies, and ask for Pholtus blessing on what may become a dangerous situation. Vandryl is still uncertain and does not stay in the temple long.

His journey back to inn is quiet one, filled with inner reflection, but he grows a bit more excited and less aprehensive as he returns to the inn. By the appointed time, his demeanor has returned to normal. he stops briefly to gather up his belongings and meets back up with the dwarves and Telvar.

So, are we ready?

I would be foolhardy to go into this situation without asking some questions, though I realize you may not have answers.

Were there any survivors of the raid? Were they able to give you any information about the attackers that we could use (even a "they fled into the woods to the east of the caravan" could help)?

Exactly where did the raid take place? Unless you have an idea of where the goblins may lair, we will need to find the site to track them down.

Do you have a manifest from the shipment? I would hate for a goblin chieftan to have appropriated some unmarked item that we could otherwise return to you.

I think we should set up a standard marching order. I propose that we set up a scouting orientated one and a combat orientated one. In both I will offer to take the rear and have the Wizard in front of me. I will defer to the others if they prefer a differant rear gaurd.

This makes sense. I propose that I take lead in the combat oriented marching order. For scouting, Rurik and Harlynd are probably better choices to take point.

Harlynd of Clan Dorak wrote:

Harlynd hands Vandryl an ale. Thanks for backing us up back there with the guards. If you were a little shorter and had a good full beard, you could almost pass for a dwarf.

You still haven't told me if you're good with an axe. What style of warrior are you?

Thanks for the ale! The axe is not my best weapon, I'm afraid. I prefer the flail. I find the vile creatures tend to be easier to hit when they've fallen down.

If it comes to this, Harlynd will try to assist Telvar's Intimidate check, glowering at the guards in a menacing manner. Intimidate 18-1=17. A sucessful aid another!. If these negotiations are sucessful, Harlynd will grudgingly pay his share only when the guards have delivered them to the Sly Wink.

Vandryl will also aid another on the intimidate check, though he didn't do nearly so well on his roll as Harlynd Intimidate 8+4=12.

Vandryl glares at the guards, as the water drips down his face, but he waits to see what Valic does before he does anything rash.

Vandryl talks a good talk, but his appetite for the rather poor beer is also quite limited. He has been nursing a single drink most of the afternoon. As he starts eating he tries to get some general information from the dwarves
So, Harlynd, you seem a no-nonsense type. You mentioned elves... were they patroling the Vaathwood? They consider that place theirs, I reckon, and you can see by the mood here that they don't like us humans venturing into it. Stump Flat and the elves just don't get along, and you're probably being lumped in with us because of your visit. I don't reckon the elves like sympathizers either. Anyway, unless they actually approached, I wouldn't worry about it.
Vandryl doesn't have any special info here, he's making a guess to try to look like he knows something. He eats heartily, unless the food is bad (he paid for better and expects it). He also retires early after some friendly carousing. He's a visitor and is careful not to carouse enough to rouse the ire of the populace. He makes a point of rising early to watch the sunrise though, down to stopping the group for a few minutes to watch it if they've already started toward Sumberton.

Greetings Valic, may your god's blessings fill all your works and those of Clan Dorak. This is Telvar, and I am Vandryl. Come, sit and have a drink with us. It is swill compared to dwarven spirits, but we can imagine it as something greater...

Vandryl frowns a little and arches his eyebrow

... or at least we can try.

Vandryl raises his voice and calls for the barkeep to send some light refreshment, he will pay for decent food for the companions, but won't spend more than a few gold total (he's somewhat local and does his best to leverage the price, but has little in the way of Diplomacy, though he looks imposing enough).

Tonight we should be merry, for tomorrow is a long trek to Sumberton.
