History
Devis was one of those people who’d been stealing since he could crawl. He fell in with the wrong crowd when he was fairly young and started training with a local thieves’ guild to be a burglar. While Devis lacked any formal education, he was wise to the ways of the underworld, and he could talk his way out of many a bad situation. This made him cocky and sometimes overconfident.
To humble him, the master of the local guild sent him on a seemingly impossible job - steal a rare artifact, a fragment of some kind of gem that had fallen out of the sky. It was stored in a Wizard’s tower, and the guild knew the Wizard was away on an adventure. So they sent young Devis in by himself, expecting him to fail and be humbled. Devis broke in and found the fragment. Unfortunately, the fragment also found Devis.
It contained the consciousness of something ancient and very powerful. It spoke with Devis, and cut a deal. He’d take the fragment and destroy it, releasing the consciousness trapped within, and in exchange, he’d receive great power. Devis managed to get past the various traps set by the Wizard, mostly by just running like hell, and escaped with the meteor fragment. He took it back to the guild house, and in the dead of night smashed it to pieces. The consciousness escaped and promptly killed everyone inside but Devis. He was found by a couple other thieves the next morning, muttering in a strange language with a crazy look in his eyes.
